Re: Final Fantasy XII Remaster Announced for PS4

Baron_Von_Aaron

I'm actually quite excited for this. I never quite beat the original. Part of the lack of motivation for me was that you could equip your entire team in exactly the same fashion and the characters never felt uniquely useful in battle. I truly hope this will come with the Japanese edition's job system to spice things up. Would definitely be worth a repeat visit for me.
I still remember how long it took me to find out about Quickenings in general. That was quite a revelation, hahaha.

Re: Talking Point: What Is a Video Game?

Baron_Von_Aaron

I think the simplest way I can put it is this: If there is electronic input that changes the outcome on a display, it is a video game.

Think of it this way.
Looking at a coin is not a game.
Flipping a coin and guessing the outcome however, is a game.
Looking at a dice is not a game.
Looking at someone else rolling a dice is not a game.
But in either case again, guessing the outcome is a game.
In the same way, watching a movie is not a game.
However, when you get to manipulate the characters, scenery, and most importantly outcome in any way, it almost certainly becomes a game.

I would be hard pressed to say that an interactive movie that prompts you once to make a decision which changes the ending scene is a game, but it certainly comes close.
"Interactive novels." Can still easily be games, as long as you get to manipulate the view, the parts of the story told, or effect the world in any way.

I can see why some people don't count certain digital experiences as games, but honestly what defines a video game is interactivity and a change in outcome, and that's really it.
How much gameplay a game has obviously varies greatly, but if there is GAMEplay to be quantified, such as in Rapture, it is a game.

P.S. @themcnoisy I like that you said you were on your second PLAY through of Rapture, but it was not a game.
Not picking on you BTW, just an observation I thought you would appreciate looking back.

Re: Major PS4 Announcements to Air at PlayStation Experience 2015

Baron_Von_Aaron

@get2sammyb Actually wouldn't it make sense to drop the price right at the beginning of December?
Bold move, but plenty of people would already have bought by then, thinking a price drop would not happen, and then they would be guaranteed to run out of stock everywhere by the 25th with the mad rush to buy after price drop.

Re: Rumour: Is Final Fantasy XII Coming to the PS4 Next?

Baron_Von_Aaron

Loved FF XII on PS2, though I actually never finished it.
Spent too much time hunting monsters and not finishing quests.
Only thing I hated about it was that characters did not feel distinct in battle.
Using the grid you could make everyone the same and do something silly like have everyone run the best gun currently available.
I just hope if they do a remaster that they use the Japanese International Edition with the Zodiac Job System, where each character has to pick a class.
It does seem a bit limiting, but more interesting over all.
They should also put more emphasis on the summons or "espers" and make sure you know when and how to unlock them.
That and quickenings, which actually took a long time to discover if you didn't know how to get them.

Re: Formula Fusion Looks Just Like You'd Expect a PS4 WipEout to Look

Baron_Von_Aaron

I enjoyed Wipeout quite a bit, the old and new, though they were very challenging.
That pre-Alpha footage looks pretty decent.
Almost makes me think they should go with a sort of comic or cel shaded style rather than realistic like on the PS3.
I wish these guys the best.

@themcnoisy Sorry for your backing woes, I haven't actually backed anything myself.
I think you can have some faith in a few releases though.
Mighty No. 9
Bloodstained
Yooka-Laylee

Those three specifically.
Famous developers behind well loved projects with a team they actually want to work with.

Re: MediEvil Fan Puts a Nail in the Coffin of PS4 Comeback

Baron_Von_Aaron

What they should do is a low budget, underused Sony Team, downloadable title.
Something like a $30 game that is more or less a throwback to the originals.
Similar mechanics and aesthetics with better graphics, throw in plenty of nods to Sony fans.
This style of platformer is no longer really huge, but I think they could make fans happy and make some money off of a "Double A" title for PS3/PS4.

Re: Soapbox: Has It Just Been a Bad Week for Games, Or Is This Simply a Sign of the Times?

Baron_Von_Aaron

@BLPs It's so funny to read your post, and I don't mean that in an insulting way. I'm guessing you are a few years younger than me. I grew up playing PlayStation and Nintendo 64, and even the older consoles, then went to PS2 and on.

The reason I say your post is funny is that it's such an eye opener on different perspectives. All my friends and I used to believe that if a game did not have a good story, a real story, it wasn't a great game. This obviously didn't hold true for certain games like Bomber Man or other titles that focus solely on gameplay, but that was our other biggest requirement.

We didn't care about graphics, we wanted great gameplay, and a solid story. Now you write and say you couldn't care less about story, and it just makes me realize how different it is for people who have always had online multiplayer. I actually agree with you in many ways, and I think given the fact that so many companies now promise good stories, but don't deliver, it makes sense that you expect any game that focuses on story to be bad.

It didn't used to be that way, the companies used to actually focus on story, and it actually was good in so many games. Now they claim they care about the story and characters, but few games manage to hit the mark because the company actually only cares about graphics and marketing and multiplayer.

Obviously certain games still nail it, like The Last Of Us or The Walking Dead for examples, but by in large games like Assassin's Creed just have a story pasted on. I'm with you in a lot of ways, yet it's just so funny how different our thinking is, and we are probably only separated by a few years.

One thing is for sure, I think gameplay should still be king. Solid gameplay and mechanics, whatever type of game it is, give it a unique style, and if you are going to give it a story, don't half ass it.

P.S. I can't believe anyone would ever make fun of you for liking the games you like, especially Smash Bros. Amongst my friends, even college and beyond, females and males, if you didn't play and love Super Smash Bros. then you were the odd one.

P.P.S. If I am wrong about your age and you are in fact let's say 22+, I meant no offense, but you probably grew up with far better internet than I had out in the middle of the woods in the NE USA.

Re: Has Metal Gear Solid Maker Hideo Kojima Quit Konami?

Baron_Von_Aaron

@themcnoisy Oh I agree, if someone tried to own him, it would be terrible. That's why I said if they gave him a team and creative control!
I highly doubt Bioware or Blizzard would ever be in the equation, I think he will most likely stick with a Japanese developer if he does "sign" with another, which is why I thought of Square Enix.
Totally agree though, without Kojima, Konami is just a few crappy Castelvania games away from bankruptcy.

Re: Rumour: Konami Power Struggle Leads to Hideo Kojima Craziness

Baron_Von_Aaron

As I said on the other article, Kojima was the beacon of light in the darkness for Konami.
I used to love a lot of what Konami had to offer, but Castlevania isn't what it used to be, and now it was only Kojima projects I longed for.
If he leaves, Konami will be less relevant than Atari and Sega.
I keep hope in the fact that Kojima could easily be picked up and given creative control by another organization.
Imagine if Square Enix gave Kojima a team and free reign, for example.
If he could bring all the key members of his team with him somewhere, leave behind anyone unnecessary, and just get finances, he could probably do something wonderful that isn't MGS for the first time in a long time.
Konami wants to be another EA or Ubisoft, and it will burn them to the ground.

Re: Pokémon Developer Game Freak's First PS4 Game Is About a Badass Elephant

Baron_Von_Aaron

Alien Hominid mixed with Donkey Kong?

By the way @benrawr and @rastamadeus, I think if they ever did make a proper 3D Pokémon MMORPG, it would completely destroy the segment, possibly even beating WoW's records. Too bad it will probably never happen. All the bones are there though, I wish they would.
Also, I'm not sure they're pocket monsters because the game is in your pocket, that was probably part of the double meaning, but they also fit into pocket "poke" balls, and the monsters in the game fit in the characters pockets. Just saying it's a work around so it doesn't have to be handheld.

Re: Demand a Final Fantasy VII Remake Thanks to Square Enix's Official Player Survey

Baron_Von_Aaron

Would anyone else like to see a new Final Fantasy Tactics? On console too, not just handheld. Think in the vein of Disgaea, but with the FFT style.

Also, I would LOVE to see a new Brave Fencer Musashi like @Gamer83 and @Kage_88 But I want it to be more like the original and a little less like Samurai Legend, not that that game wasn't really cool.

As for FF VII remake, absolutely. I know it would cost millions, I know it could never live up to hype, I know I don't want them to change anything and yet I want everything to be updated, but just do it damn it. As long as it was the original game, even just with updated graphics, I would be supremely happy with it. Definitely my favorite FF game. I don't see how fans and reviewers could criticize them for making the exact same game with new graphics when that is what everyone is asking for!

Re: The Order: 1886 Is Just 'Touching the Surface' of the PS4's Power

Baron_Von_Aaron

I'm thinking MGS V will push it even harder. Kojima always makes games look amazing. Think about how fantastic MGS3 looked on PS2. Then MGS4 on PS3. However, by the end of the PS3 generation, MGS4 really doesn't look that great compared to some other games, like Ground Zeroes, for example. It is crazy how much it can change over a generation. Having played Ground Zeroes on PS4 though, I really wouldn't mind if every game committed to 1080p at 60 FPS with slightly lower texture qualities and such. I prefer smooth and nice to pretty but bumpy.

Re: Rumour: Star Wars: Battlefront Will Span the Series' Entire Saga on PS4

Baron_Von_Aaron

The teaser at E3 made me so excited.
I hope they can keep the look and feel of the original Battlefront, as in accurate to Star Wars, but obviously updated.
If they can combine that with the gameplay of Battlefield, I'd even be down for using a similar class system, they will have a hit on their hands.
It can't just be Battlefield reskinned with Star Wars though, it has to have the right feel.
It's hard to explain what I mean, but I think people who have played both will get it.
They will definitely need to make maps more vertical too, like with the overlapping layers Battlefront had in some levels.
Atmospheric conditions like the fog in the swamp of Dagobah would be awesome too.
I'm still sooo excited.
