Re: EA: Games Are Still Too Hard to Learn

Baron_Von_Aaron

While I can totally see the point he is making, that is what mobile games are for. Once familiarized with a touch screen, learning the next touch screen game is much easier. Mobile games are for the casual general public. Someone who buys a PS4 or Xbox one isn't going to be afraid of the controller.
Now I'm not saying some or even many console or handheld games shouldn't have simple controls. Indie games do this very well. Often times, less is more. However, I just don't want EA to use this as a mission statement to start dumbing down annual releases. If they thought they could get more sales by making simpler and easier games, they would do it. That is what worries me about these statements, the death of a challenge.

Re: Talking Point: Are Bigger Open Worlds Really Better?

Baron_Von_Aaron

I'd take Red Dead Redemption as a good example.
RDR used the open world properly I think. It actually added to the feel of a Wild West game. The animals and expanses and horse travel and all, it made you feel more like the game was what it was trying to be, an old western.
Think about how any movie set in the old west have scenes of just people travelling on horseback and chatting, or looking out over a desert, or any number of things that are basically man vs. environment.
Yes, travelling could occasionally be tedious, but also rewarding.

What we have seen so far of Metal Gear Solid 5 actually reminded me of RDR, and gave me some extra hope it may be good. It's also a little similar to the old Mercenaries games.
I'm not sure if MGS will do it right, but it certainly adds new aspects to the game. Stealth in a larger more open environment, as well as action. You can take multiple routes and use multiple plans of attack, as well as have things like air strikes now.
The MGS series never needed an open world, but that doesn't mean it can't still be a proper MGS game with one. It can keep most of the old features and open up new possibilities.

In the end, it definitely just depends on what the developer fills it with. An open world can be an expanse full of boring, or a world of opportunity.

Re: Can You Relate to Any of These PlayStation Memories?

Baron_Von_Aaron

Oh, and then there was also trying over and over again to beat the last test for the Class A license in the original Gran Turismo. The car with the broken front strut I believe. That was such a pain. I never did manage it as a kid, but I played it again last year and finally beat it.

Re: Can You Relate to Any of These PlayStation Memories?

I remember when I was younger I couldn't beat the MGS torture scene. Later I developed a technique where I just tighten all the muscles in my hand and wrist with my thumb over the button to be mashed, and I shake my arm at the elbow violently by tensing the muscles over and over basically. Works on any mashing sequence, always been faster than my friends.

My friend and I also played Cool Boarders 2 so much one day that we had blisters on our thumbs, so we put band aids over the blisters and kept playing, hahaha. That game was great. Wep Systems!

Finally, that same friend had just beaten MGS3 in a single sitting, and was watching the credits with that awful song (OOOH, I've got something in my throooat!) and he said he wished he could skip it. I told him "Try this. Hold L1, L2, R1, R2, Start, and Select." He did it, and reset the game before he ever got his ranking. He was so pissed but we laughed so much, because he totally knew what a soft reset was and did it anyways. He must have just been too tired to catch it. Great times with my PS systems.

Re: Borderlands: The Handsome Collection Brings the Shooter Series to PS4

@Godsire-
It makes a lot of sense to me to do remakes/remasters, even in close proximity to the original release. People who still only own PS3 probably already have it. People who only own a PS4 because they are new to Sony or no longer have their PS3 can still have it. People like me who have a PS3 and PS4, but are no longer really buying PS3 games, can buy it. I never bought BL2 on PS3 because I knew I was getting a PS4 and was sort of in a gaming lull. Now I have the chance to play BL2 and TPS with all the additional content, upgraded, for a reasonable price, I love it. The bottom line is, it's minimal work compared to making a new game and it opens up a big revenue stream, and it may help Sony by brining even more people to the platform.

@Tasuki
At this point the fist game is getting rather long in the tooth, would look bad in comparison to BL2 and TPS, and it would be more costly to remaster it than the amount of additional sales it would get just for including it. Bean counter decision, I am sure. Doesn't make sense money wise. Plus almost everyone with a PS3 who wanted to has already played it.

Re: Poll: Is It Now Time for Sony to Consider a $349.99 PS4 Price Promotion?

Baron_Von_Aaron

How about this?
$350 - Console and controller only.
$400 - Console, controller, and 3 games.
That way, most people who wanted one would automatically buy the $400 version after the price cut, and it would get more people playing all of the bundled games on Sony's platform. It would be a win win.
Basically just marketing, as clearly the $400 bundle would be the better value, but I bet it would cause a big sales spike, while still putting extra money in Sony's pocket.
Anyone who really wanted to save the $50, or didn't like those games, could get the cheaper version.

Re: This Is What a Remake of the Worst Jak & Daxter Would Look Like

Baron_Von_Aaron

Yeah... I'm with pretty much everyone else. Jak II was my favorite J&D game.
I actually played it before I ever played the first, and I think some of the people who were sore over Jak II just loved the original so much that the new darker mood ruined it for them.
However, for me the tone was awesome, and I even loved it that you could explore a bit, despite the limitations. It did have flaws, and some of the gameplay was extremely difficult, but I always found it very rewarding when I overcame the various challenges the game gave me.
For example I even liked the very fast speeder like cars in the city. It could be so frustrating to hit something and blow up on your way to a simple mission, but at the same time when you nailed a speedy run, it made you feel like a complete badass.
The hover board was even better though.
One of those games that actually wasn't too easy and didn't coddle the player constanly. One of my favorites from PS2 as well. Jak III was great too and had some awesome aspects I wish were in II, but still not as good overall in my opinion.
Sorry, rare miss for me on this Article, Push Square.

Re: Talking Point: What Are Your Most Memorable PlayStation Multiplayer Feats?

Baron_Von_Aaron

My most memorable PlayStation multiplayer was actually local play with Time Splitters 3 and 3 friends. We would set up ridiculous custom levels like capture the flag on the largest map, all machine guns for weapons, one hit kills with friendly fire on, and maximum bots on the enemy team. Probably my favorite moment from all of that was when my friends heroically drove across the map in the Jeep, managed to "capture the bag" and drive all the way back across without dying in the constant barrage of bullets. Right before getting back, the driver jumped out, said to my friend in real life "I work alone." and fired one shot into the bag holder's head, taking the bag, and scoring the winning point himself. We laughed for so long, I can't even tell you. There were so many epic moments with that game.

I also remember getting sick of playing slow in CoD MW, setting up with light machine guns and all, and finally saying "Screw this, I'm the juggernaut, Bitch!" Equipping instead the Juggernaut perk, extra sprinting, and a Scorpion. I proceeded to run directly at people shooting and knifing them to get about 7 kills in a row my first life with the new setup. My two friends in the room were pretty impressed too, hah.

The original MGO from MGS3 and the KZ2 multiplayer were both epic as well. Recently I've been playing on the couch co-op in Diablo 3, which is much fun.

Re: Oops, Sony Has Delayed the PS4's Impending Chinese Launch

Baron_Von_Aaron

I would say that the media coverage and anti-government sentiment would actually just increase the sales when it does release. The problem with that is how locked down the Chinese media is. My sister is living in Shanghai and she didn't even know the democracy riots were happening.

Either way I don't think it will hurt sales. A little anticipation and a little more wait could just make people want it more. Especially if it's the government's fault.
