Re: PS6's Rumoured Handheld Is Getting More Tangible by the Day

AverageGamer

@mrbone "Steam deck is successful but its sale is still under 5 million."

That mostly come down to the the fact that you can't just go out and buy the Steam Deck... You have to buy it through Steam. So there are a lot of countries that don't even have access to purchase it, and the potential buyer base is limited. Valve is artificially limiting the sales of the Steam Deck.

@LowdefalIt After the vita people expected more from their portable handheld. It set the bar...

But it wasn't entirely down to the WiiU either. I think some of the blame could also be put on the 3DS as well. If you remember... The 3DS face heavy backlash due to it price to performance ratio especially when it costed the same as the vita

The technical gap jump that the 4ds or whatever would have to take to surpass the vita would put it pass PS3/Xbox360/WiiU level or at least on par.

The separate development cost of supporting a full HD home console but also a HD handheld would not make sense. They would basically be playing the same games.

The Switch 1 at least in handheld is basically what the next Nintendo handheld would have performed like, and it just happened that the dock performance outpaced the WiiU as well.

@Enuo "Nintendo ruined portable gaming. It used to be a simple system, big games on the T.V., small games on the handheld, it was perfect."

That was actually Sony. They had come out with their big d*** swinging with the PSP and Vita. Saying "Hey, look the PSP can play PS2 game, and the Vita can plays PS3 games. Look at our full fledge releases like Uncharted, God of War, Gravity Rush.... etc You can now play console quality games on the go"

Nintendo tried to keep up with 3DS, but was still out classed by the Vita. Then Sony decided to bail. Leaving Nintendo with the benchmark created by the Vita. How do you out do the Vita, and still reliably release game for both home and portable.

@PuppetMaster “ So you prefer 5 new studio who will make mediocre slops over 1 established studio who make good games?”

WOW!!! For someone who is going on about “Why won’t anyone think of the poor developers and industry?!?!?”. That’s very inconsiderate thing to say… Especially when one of the highest rated games of this year came not from an established studio, but a new studio that was probably 1 of those 5 studios

Re: 'People Are Less Willing to Pay': Dev Speaks Out Against Day One Releases on PS Plus, Xbox Game Pass

AverageGamer

@PuppetMaster Do you know how many developers have closed their doors over 40+ years… Probably thousands. Yet here we are with the industry continuing to grow. Developer and studio aren’t going anywhere. How do I know.. Alex Hutchinson sold his last studio to google, left it become a senior creative director at Stadia. Then when that crash and burn. He created this studio. Every time a studio closes. 5 more are there to take it place.

Re: Switch 2 Absolutely Destroys PS2's Launch Record in Japan

AverageGamer

@Oram77 I guess it a strange trade off... The PS5 had those games... But then it basically went silent for the next 6 months till Ratchet and Clank came out. The Switch 2 will see Donkey kong, Pokemon Legends Z-A, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors Age of imprisonment, and who know what else before the end of the year. Maybe the spin off Splatoon game? (I'm not counting Drag x Drive cause that look's stupid)

Re: 'Good Luck with That' - The Outer Worlds 2 $80 Price Has Gone Down Horribly with PS5 Players

AverageGamer

@ChrisDeku I haven’t bought a game on launch day through Steam in 8+ years. Even the original The Outer World I purchased for $40 on launch. Meh. Who cares about physical. That a dying space and most of the sales will be digital like it has been for every major release for the last several years. Plus there a rumor that The Outer Worlds 2 will be a code in box… so that just gonna push people to buy digitally anyway.

Re: Round Up: What Was Announced for PS5 at Xbox Games Showcase?

AverageGamer

@UltimateOtaku91 It probably doesn’t help that the announcement for the Switch 2 and it actual release was very short. These event was planned and prepared months in advance. Nintendo was also extremely hush hush about the Switch 2. Also given the current economic climate, a lot of developers are probably waiting to see how well the Switch 2 actually sells before jumping on board.

Re: EA's Black Panther Game Cancelled, Studio Shut Down

AverageGamer

@wildcat_kickz The time it would take for the studio come up with another idea, pitch it, and get all the tools in place to start development of another game... They would have completed the Black Panther game or be ready to at least release it. There no reason to try and keep the studio around if they already didn't have another game in the pipeline. The best thing they could have done was redeploy the employees to other projects... But that would have also been costly.

Re: Sony Studio Insomniac Inviting Interns to Cut Their Claws on Marvel's Wolverine for PS5

AverageGamer

Man, I couldn’t imagine taking a summer internship at a game studio in this job market climate 😬

Good luck finding a job after the internship when you gotta compete against the millions of other vastly skill developer that also go laid off.

I wanted to do game development as well… But I saw how companies treated game developers back in early 2000 and 2010s. Wanted no part of that, so moved to Networking Engineering after completing college for Software Engineering

Re: Very Fittingly, Expedition 33 Has Sold 3.3 Million Copies in 33 Days

AverageGamer

@VaultGuy415 No reason to regret being on gamepass. They never knew that the game would come out and do as well as it did. They could have easily turned down game pass and the game could have sold terribly.

Better to have that financial cushion and whatever support Microsoft offered them.

The real question is do they do a game pass release for their next game, and ask for a bigger payout from Microsoft… or rely on the support that they gained from this release.

Re: Oblivion Remastered Sales Prove the Power of Nostalgia and Shadow Drops

AverageGamer

It not just nostalgia… oblivion released when gaming was way less popular. There has been massive industry growth since then. Everyone who has only ever seen played skyrim like myself has spend over 20 years listening to how Oblivion was superior game. I only picked to see if lived up the massive high praise everyone and their mom had given it originally.

Re: Fans Discuss the Reason Behind DOOM: The Dark Ages' Lukewarm Opening

AverageGamer

@Matroska “ How many zoomers do you think have watched Star Trek TNG because of seeing Picard doing a facepalm in a meme?”

That mainly down to the fact Star Trek hasn’t done anything to stay relevant to a modern audience. All the new Star Trek content has been terrible. The isabelle and doomguy relationship is a modern meme. DOOM has least tries to stay relevant either through the multiple re-releases, reboots, or RTX remakes…

“ WoW was huge, way bigger than Doom, yet that's absolutely a Gen X and millennial thing in terms of the majority of the players”

That mainly due to the fact my generation has realized that Blizzard is a toxic, misogynistic company, and is a cancer to the entire gaming industry. WoW fan base is also completely toxic which drives away anyone new from playing games.

“ It's why series like Final Fantasy keep trying (and failing) to reinvent themselves, to attract younger audiences so when is older people stop gaming (or die...) they still have a fanbase.”

That the thing… No one really wants FF to reinvent itself. We just want a FF game. That why Dragon Quest is so far doing better between the two.

Re: Fans Discuss the Reason Behind DOOM: The Dark Ages' Lukewarm Opening

AverageGamer

@Matroska “ But you're right, though, I can't imagine many people born in the last twenty years giving a crap about Doom. I doubt many even know what it is, especially the younger end ”

Do you spend any time on the internet minus reading video game articles on push square? Have you not seen all the meme, crossovers, culture impact that DOOM has had over the last 30 years. That was all rekindled with 2016 reboot? The isabelle and doomguy relationship was pretty big thing during COVID for younger people like me. Along with the DOOM music kicks in memes. Sure 6 years old know about GTA and FIFA since that stuff have basically transcended gaming in general. But I wouldn’t say that young people had no idea what doom is.

Re: Square Enix Demands Bigger Games, Faster Development as Sales Continue to Slump

AverageGamer

@LogicStrikesAgain “ They usually have a spending budget for things like acquisitions, last year it was around 11 billion”

That 11 billion set aside for 3 years, and that wasn’t just for PlayStation… and it probably lower than 11 billion now since they had made several acquisitions and investments since that information was put out. The most recent one is Gaudiy a web3/AI company…

“ history is any indication, the economy will bounce back again.”

And we don’t know when that’ll happen… it could be next month, next year, or 5 years from now. Sony has have very cautious outlook on the situation right now.

Re: Square Enix Demands Bigger Games, Faster Development as Sales Continue to Slump

AverageGamer

@LogicStrikesAgain “ When companies are down financially, it’s absolutely the best time to acquire them, it’s when their market cap is at their lowest.”

That makes sense to do when the economy is healthy and consumers are not struggling for groceries due to the current economy shift. You’re not thinking about how current inflation and trade war could have a negative impact on a company who primary income is currently entertainment. They’re talking about raising prices on products again, and moving production to the US which is not going to be cheap. If thing get worse and consumers have to make cut backs… The first thing to go is entertainment (games, subscriptions services, movies…etc) which is gonna affect Sony bottom line which means lays off, studios closer, selling off IPs… etc So you basically want Sony to take on Square Enix probably massive debt instead of focusing on making sure their own studios are well taken care off. Crazy.

Re: Square Enix Demands Bigger Games, Faster Development as Sales Continue to Slump

AverageGamer

@LogicStrikesAgain Yeah…. No. With the current economy. Throwing money at failing companies is a terrible thing to do. They’re gonna need any extra cash they have on hand to weather any incoming storm especially if things go south. Only companies like Microsoft can afford to really throw money in the fire at this moment. They’ll just lay off 6k and still have a work force twice of Sony, and triple the income.

Re: Sony's New First-Party Studio Working on Lighthearted Team-Based Action Game for PS5

AverageGamer

@Tomato_Goose Don’t feel sad for them… If the developers didn’t want to work on live-service games then they wouldn’t have applied… It not like studio was making AAA award winning single player games before this then all a sudden turn to making to live service.

If the developers didn’t like the idea of working on live service then apply to a different studio… No one is forcing anyone to work on these games.
