Warner Bros is going through a period upheaval, and apparently that’s got Sony sniffing.
To be honest, website SEScoops may not be the most recognisable website, but it’s citing sources which claim the Japanese manufacturer is interested in scooping up its new WB Streaming and Studios business, which is being spun-off from the rest of Warner Bros Discovery, with a completion expected in mid-2026.
According to the website, Sony is interested in acquiring HBO Max and the firm’s gaming assets, which will all fall under the umbrella of this new company. The electronics maker has been gradually reinventing itself as an entertainment giant over the past few years.

While it all seems largely unlikely to us, this story lands alongside a more reliable report from Variety, which claims Warner Bros Games is dividing its intellectual property up under the stewardship of two leaders: Yves Lachance will oversee Harry Potter and Game of Thrones games while Shaun Himmerick will front Mortal Kombat and DC games.
To us, this management restructuring suggests Warner Bros Games wants to double down on its pillars, with the likes of Harry Potter and Mortal Kombat always strong performers for the organisation. We know a sequel to Hogwarts Legacy is in development, as well as a new title from NetherRealm Studios.
But it’s been a period of intense turbulence for the publisher: it cancelled Wonder Woman and subsequently shut down developer Monolith Productions earlier this year, while last year’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League was a colossal flop from developer Rocksteady Studios.

Hell no mortal Kombat should stay multi platform all fighting games should be multi platform
MK1 was such a disappointment. But probably one of the only interesting titles for them since it doesn't include the licensing headache like the other properties they work on.
@Toot1st Even if they acquired them, which to be clear I don't think they will, they probably would stay multiplatform to be fair.
I don't think it's out of the realm of possibility, Sony was interested in the Fox sale before Disney got them and was in serious talks with Paramount before Skydance. With Warner splitting into two companies, it's obvious they are setting themselves up for a sale. Does that mean Sony is going to acquire them in the end? No, but I'm sure they will be interested, even outside of the gaming space. HBO alone is probably interesting to Sony.
I would like a new Shaolin monks, please. And while we're at it a new Mythologies.
Think this rumor is *****. Sony is on record of stating they don’t want a streaming service let alone one as big as HBO Max. As for the game side wouldn’t be the worst to get the ip and more teams but still seems tricky, especially if they make them ps5 exclusive when looking at how much ip games like Hogwarts Legacy made day and date by launching everywhere. Also considering Sony’s movie track record also don’t know about this
@Fishmasterflex96 They bought Crunchyroll and ruined it. They'd do the same here.
Bad source in my opinion.
There's no reason why a wrestling website would be able to find this out, people are pointing towards the fact that AEW is broadcast on WBD channels and HBO Max but it just seems so unlikely even if a wrestling site has some insiders at AEW, that anyone there would be aware of this kind of deal.
The Variety piece is interesting and builds on some previous announcements they had made around their gaming division months ago
@RZ-Atom Crunchyroll were rubbish before that anyway
Hmmm. Not convinced by the sources but lets pretend it's true.
That's an awful lot of studios and employees (reportedly around 2,000) with not a lot of great games released in the last decade. Seems like a LOT to take on and buying them would almost certainly lead to a lot of layoffs as there is a reason they are losing money. (This may happen anyway, but the optics would be bad for Sony)
But I suppose it depends on what the price is, and what IP is included. If it's a firesale, there may be a relative bargain to be had.
@Oram77 literally i prefer the high seas
This is good after WB is in the dumpster thanks to their awful recent games if this happens maybe we can see the return of good simple player games i dont care about mk ip just get Hogwarts this would be an easy sony W
@Toot1st mk is straight ass nowadays so i don't see any reason for sony to acquire the ip
I could imagine Sony handling some of the IPs very well, and it's not like WB have been overly successful in their recent attempts, notwithstanding a few standouts. Don't necessarily believe it, but it'd be cool to see Sony handle a batman game, or pick up the Nemesis system while they're at it! Haha
Lol yeah i really doubt this
@J2theEzzo yes cause Sony also has a good track record with their movies like madam web, kraven and of course morbin time
@Fishmasterflex96 Haha, yeah, but pretty much all of their 1st party games are a success, no?
@Toot1st I mean… By the time the next mortal kombat releases. There will only be like two actual real platforms (PS and PC). So in theory it would stay multi-platform since Sony already releases on PC
'm sure that Sony wouldn't be the ONLY Publisher interested in Purchasing WB and/or their Gaming Assets. They aren't the only ones of the years mentioned over the years.
Some of the issues though is that they don't 'own' their IP's, they may own a 'Licence' or Agreement to make games like Hogwarts, DC games etc. Mortal Kombat probably makes sense for Sony as they own (or did) EVO.
Sony clearly has a fetish for flushing money down the toilet.
@get2sammyb switch and PC maybe but they would never allow them to be in Xbox
@AverageGamer Xbox have already announced the next xbox console
@J2theEzzo by handling you mean gatekeeping and making everything a live service game?
Please God no.
@Toot1st You mean the PC was in all but name? Most will just stick with PC and go with PlayStation for their console fix.
I wouldn't be against Sony scooping up NRS/MK after what WarnerBros did to MK1 and MvS. Clearly WB has no idea what they're doing in regards to gaming anymore.
Would be good for PS gamers, though only if Sony have available studios, but im not sure theres any truth in it.
Dont do it Sony, unless you get the ip rights as well. But i’m sure that won’t happen. Maybe if WB wants to sell the MK ip+Netherrealm for a good price.
If you want to spend, try to acquire Fromsoftware, Square Enix, CDPR or maybe try to acquire a substantial stake in Take Two.
Edit: Wait, so (if true) they’re eyeing to fully acquire WB, including it’s IP? Well thats a whole other proposition, in that case that would be huge. If they can get WB’s IP’s, they should definitely do it, for the right price
@Toot1st Like @AdamNovice said. Just a PC in all but name… They won’t need a dedicated ‘Xbox’ port anymore. Xbox as dedicated close ecosystem platform is dead. Microsoft is finally going back to what the Xbox originally was meant to be. A DirectX box running windows. Now that consumers are more technically savvy, the cross platform experience has improved, development toolkit have greatly improved, and hardware has improved. We don’t really need the dumb down locked console ecosystem anymore… Grant. People will still cling to that experience for nostalgia sake, and rightfully so. But those people can purchase PlayStation and Nintendo for that.
Maybe they could at least buy Rocksteady at a discount?
Man, I hope this is true. I’d prefer Sony to have Mortal Kombat over Warner Bros any day, only because I would LOVE to start seeing some Sony/Playstation exclusive characters as guest/DLC characters in the next MK games. Just imagine if current version of Kratos was brought back in and they added alongside someone like Jin Sakai haha. I heavily doubt it though as MK is a multi-platform title and couldn’t see Sony allowing Xbox players being able to use the characters.
I believe it, it's big turbulent times for WB and all the big media conglomerates will be testing the waters. That said, it's doubtful WB would be interested in another merger or buyout. This is the chunk of WBD that they expect to keep on swimming, succeed and grow, while the tv portion (left with the biggest chunk of the crippling debt) will sink and eventually sold for parts.
If anything Sony should have bought Monolith Soft from them after the shutdown, like the PUG guys did with Tango Gameworks.
I'm usually against buy outs but WB is such a trash company that kills IPs and is just a microtransaction cess pit, so I'll allow it lol.
if sony could get access to the patent for the nemesis system than it could make some great games, since WB seems to be sleeping on it
I sincerely hope NRS escapes them at some point.
It's probably half true, Sony were dead set on owning paramount pictures. But just the good bits and not paramount plus. And then again with kadakowa
They seem to be in the market purchase a portfolio of pre existing film and/or tv ip
People purely looking at the video game angle again like fromsoft. Game studios like rocksteady just a mere bonus, they would want the IP of HBO . Not sure I envision Warner selling that anymore than Sony would sell Spider-Man, the boys, last of us or Ghostbusters
Using my galaxy brain to figure out how this could potentially lead to a Sopranos game on PS6
If This is true I hope they get ahold of The Fear IP WB Games were fools to let that series die
@Areus a reboot or a new game in general in the fear series would be great.
@RZ-Atom Sony didn't ruin Crunchyroll.
This could be great. WB seems intent on turning everything into a microtransaction BS, and Sony have said in the past they don't own enough IP.
@J2theEzzo yes for games but this isn’t just for games, it’s for the entirety of WB.
MK alone would be a huge get and then of course we have the prospect of Playstation Studios putting banger Marvel AND DC games at the same time O__O
@Fishmasterflex96 Sony have their own streaming service. With about 10 films. Maybe they're hoping to pad that out a bit, to encourage people to spend some money on it.
Okay, I exaggerate slightly, it has some decent films and the streaming quality is above the rest, but the library is very thin and most people don't really need better quality streaming. You also need the right hardware to even try it.
They had their chance with PS Allstars, they have funding for Marvel Tokken. I get they have EVO but like come on Sony.
Too lazy to make one yourself? Have to take out of your old selves or Microsoft's playbook. Sigh.
Film licensing even as a factor hmm.
For WB I mean, they haven't produced anything good so even if they take them on it's a bit of a joke right?
WB almost gives off Midway vibes (even if they own Midway IPs and haven't done anything with the olders ones since the 360/PS3 era compilation). So besides Mortal Kombat), they had to keep them alive, or Hogwarts Legacy, most of WB's gaming efforts are pretty pathetic honestly with the many decisions they have made.
A new FEAR would be nice but I doubt it. It would be a generic multiplayer shooter anyway and not come close to those of the past.
Is Travelers Tales under WB or were they just contracted too? Are TT Independent? I doubt it.
Sony just don’t forget the collection of Midway & Atari Games classic arcade games if you move in for the kill.
Defender - Joust- Robotron 2084- San Francisco Rush- Hydro Thunder- Gorf- Satans Hollow- Gauntlet- Paperboy- Smash TV & a ton of others! Warner hasn’t done a damn thing with all that classic IP since PS3!!
Should take their DC assets too, coz WB is poo.
@Fishmasterflex96 But sony have cooperations with HBO, and they have chruchroll stream media, their own bravia core stream. As I see, they hate television business more that they hardly developed.
Maybe Sony should put the studios they have to good use first instead of all the live service crap they were forced to create in the past few years.
Sony should definitely do this, if they can afford it. Maybe through a consortium for a majority and controlling stake. Just the DC and Wizardry IPs alone would be a huge get. But just imagine them owning their own streaming service with existing infrastructure and subscriber base. They could put crunchyroll and their own sony picture productions in the service and in one acquisition shoot to the top 3 global streaming services in the world, rivaling disney and netflix. They’d certainly be one of the biggest movie and tv production companies. And they’d be the only entertainment company with a dominant force in different media offerings ie movie/tv, music, anime and gaming. Remember this would be more of a Sony acquisition rather than for Playstation alone. The IP with transmedia potential they’d be getting would be unbelievable
@Toot1st Sony buying something doesn't mean it'll be exclusive. Calm down.
Makes sense. Last year Sony tried to purchase Paramount. Clearly they want to expand and they have the money to do so.
@Anya-chan didnt the last one sell over 15 millions copies, street fighter 6 only sold 5 million
@Toot1st quality over quantity in this case sf 6 is good mk 1 is ass no matter if the game sold more but the reality is sf keeps being super healthy and mk 1 not relevant anymore
@Toot1st you said fighting games should be multiplatform well marvel is on ps5 and pc the only way to play it is having a ps5 and pc if have a NS or xbox you can't and i completely agree with this because Sony needs to keep having exclusives or half exclusives in this case
If mk ends up on Sony hands and is completely ps5 exclusive im not mad at all in the end is straight sony W because ppl will buy ps5 to play the new mk
Yeah Avalanche, instead of making a new Hogwarts game, we’d like you to focus on a live-service Daxter MOBA. Theeenks!
Love,
Sony
WB is so mismanaged that Sony can't be any worse.
@Anya-chan That's cause MK isn't allowed to keep going for more than 2 seasons by WB. They want to milk a new box.
Granted, MK1 did miss the mark in a few areas. If rumors are true, the game was supposed to be Injustice 3 until WB forced netherealm into making it an MK. The kameo system would've made sense on a superhero fighter.
@RZ-Atom I argue the opposite when there were independent they were not making much there moving snail pace.
But when sony acquired them it has boosted there numbers
So simply saying they ruined it seem bit far fetched
@Nem really damn WB and their bs choices so sony if ends up owning the ip is a good thing maybe we can see the return to form of mk
