Work continues in earnest on Insomniac Games’ upcoming superhero outing Marvel’s Wolverine, which is expected to be one of the biggest games of the PS5 generation.
While it’s been quite some time since the title was announced, the Burbank-based developer has announced that it’s inviting interns to “cut their claws” on the upcoming release this summer.
It’s all part of a work placement programme spearheaded by PlayStation, which will give students the opportunity to get a flavour for a career in the gaming industry.
“Insomniac and SIE are delighted to host a new generation of innovators this summer, who will cut their claws around our studio working on exciting things like Marvel’s Wolverine,” the Spider-Man maker said.
“To our interns: let’s push the boundaries of play together!”
Could you imagine doing an internship at a studio like Insomniac Games? That’s pretty insane!

I don't have high hopes for this one. The whole concept of making an entire game around Wolverine seems like a tough nut to crack. I'm wondering how they will design satisfying gameplay mechanics for this one when apparently all you can do is slash and slice up the enemies. I wish they discarded the Marvel universe and relied on their own ideas instead. That's the Insomniac I grew up to love.
I wonder will more gameplay of this leak 👀
@FantasyExplor3r88 I mean the X-Men Origins Wolverine game is a really good game and considered one of the better movie tie in games, in fact its a rare tie-in that's better then the film. Wolverines Revenge on the PS2 is also another good Wolverine game with a focus on stealth over action.
Yeah they aren't going to drop making Marvel games when they make so much money and acclaim.
I'm wondering if there still making the Venom game.
@AdamNovice my money would be on no for three reasons
1) the gameplay of the venom bits was actually quite limited, it was fun for like 10 minutes but can you make a game out of it?
2) Spider-man fatigue. We’re already seeing people say that after 3 games. It think they would be better off waiting to knock it lit the part with SM-3
3) Tony Todd the VA for Venom sadly died. Considering they recast Peter just to make the face actor more closely match Yuri Lowenthal, I can only imaginge what this would do to their art pipeline.
All of that is guess work of course, but I’d be willing to bet that some of the leaked games on Insomniacs list never see release, that is game development, we just don’t usually see it publicly, it’s hidden behind the scenes.
My work experience: because I was a moody working class teen that quite frankly cba, my history teacher got my placement with her friend at the archives service. Was cool to an extent with the old microfilm readers and stuff but as it was a subsidy of the library very quiet... one day I literally fell asleep at the desk sorting local photos back in order in a physical file.
Otherwise, I had my first taste of the Internet and remember reading about f1 a lot that week and understanding what bargeboards are (thanks to the brew haha over Schumacher and Irvine that weekend)... it was the first time i realised the intricacies of f1 being more than just going fast and crashing and started my love of it, from a pastime. History... a little less so, so I know how to use index cards 🤣
@themightyant Very valid points, though I remember Tony Todd saying that Insomniac left about 80% of his dialogue out of the game, suggesting that there's plenty to work with.
Plus that whole Venom section seemed way too developed for it to just be for a short section.
It's possible though they might save it all for SM3 where there's the potential to play as 4 separate characters.
Peter Parker
Miles Morales
Silk
And Venom.
@DennisReynolds Yeah X2: Wolverine Revenge was pretty solid. I like how they used Wolverine heightened senses to see enemies footprints & positions, lasers, mines, and even to see in the dark. I really like the stealth takedown too.
I never get the chance to play X-Men Origins though. But i heard some positives words about the game is better than the movie.
Also, despite the flaws, i quite enjoyed Wolverine: Adamantium Rage on Sega Genesis.
@AdamNovice I mean.... Venom hardly talks so 80% of very little is still very little. I suspect there were a few cut scenes, but not enough for a game, with it's own separate narrative.
I didn't feel the Venom section was way too developed. It was fun and a power thrill initially but it aslo felt pretty janky and one dimensional to me and by the end of 10 minutes (or whatever it was) I was a bit over it. Again not enough for a game to be built around it imo.
I just think it was one of those cases where they had originally planned one thing, with a bit more Venom, and then that changed during development for one reason or another.
@FantasyExplor3r88 i agree. forgot this game even existed. hopefully insomniac can make some new ips for the ps6
@FantasyExplor3r88
My only hope is SMMM team is doing this and not SM2 team. ***** Bryan Intihar.
I hope these interns will be paid...
A slow paced wolverine who punches people because he doesn't necessarily want to impale absolutely everyone all the time, and only chooses to do so on the very sickest of sick f***s or when in a blind rage because some bad s*** went down, and, in his spare time, likes to ride his motorbike, drink, mope and pull glass shards and bullets out of his body: good game.
A flip around like spiderman, jumping at and slashing generic enemies wolverine: Bad game.
I do wonder if they will get the tone right for a more mature game, and the lack of information for ages makes me less excited than I was when they teased the game
@Ravix The could make it a 'claw management' sim: press a button to retract, or extend, your claws. Fists and claws are non-lethal and lethal styles, respectively; fists does less damage, but you have more health, whereas claws do more damage, but make you more vulnerable (because gisnt open wounds all over hands...). But for every person you kill (claw) not punch, the next day you have to drink more beer to forget, and dull the pain. Drink too much, however, and you suck at fighting the day after. And that's the gameplay loop! 😂
@J2theEzzo ah, that's it! I basically want Wolverine to be some kind of Max Payne-like, so maybe yes 😂 addiction, drinking, smoking, nightmares and depression, and also brutal violence against the scum of the earth when necessary... and when we're out of booze
i wish insominiac move on to other things that are not marvel after this they are such a good studio i want to see them try other things sunset overdrive is my fav game by them
@Toot1st You will wait for a long time because after Wolverine they gonna do Spiderman 3, a new R&C, and even an X-Men game if the leak is legit.
Man, I couldn’t imagine taking a summer internship at a game studio in this job market climate 😬
Good luck finding a job after the internship when you gotta compete against the millions of other vastly skill developer that also go laid off.
I wanted to do game development as well… But I saw how companies treated game developers back in early 2000 and 2010s. Wanted no part of that, so moved to Networking Engineering after completing college for Software Engineering
@Ravix What you'll get is "Xavier's school for the gifted" management, and poppa Logan has to be the groundskeeper, teacher, student rep, and councillor/ babysitter to all the other kids at the school, sorting their beef and drying their tears, while trying to not tear the building down, as Charles is in space, on some R and R.
@PuppetMaster the leak isn't legit , maybe semi legit at the most , but it seems like a lot on the " leak " were more concepts of games then actual games. if people had access to developers logs , you'll see a lot of games don't make it out of the concept stage , or get scrapped early on before its even made public.
I already less respect the staff, regardless of Ted going as I didn't like the direction changes over the years till I gave up on them entirely as a studio. But if people like what they do now, by all means. I just don't.
They may have better management so I can respect that and it's good for interns to see what it SHOULD be like, but their design is still bland and executing boring ideas as any other disfunctional third party studios do.
I'd go for a PS2/3 or older era design but it won't happen, Forget skill trees, have interesting set pieces, platforming, combat, etc. A balance. I still enjoy old hack n slashes for a reason. Not modern era excuse systems and dumbed down gameplay so empty. Accessible sure, but too much so it's boring pass.
Innovators in what area? I haven't seen innovation or creative design that isn't repetitive and bland even at Insomniac let alone third party studios or 1st party of PS4/5 gen at all. XD
Their staff intro videos from 10 years ago were just as bland, this gives me no respect or hope at all it will be any different.
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLOm9SeAVU7idlnwCWY1BW0SKPAw-yy_75 such as these on their YT channel as an example.
Ever since movie or other focused appeal or PS3/360 game design games (PS2 era had moments of it), have been repetitive pieces of garbage, dumbed down further and further and we see it in these 20 somethings and newer their game, movie, etc. experiences and references for creativity, they are just as uncreative as ever, play barely anything, have narrow experiences and contribute the same slop over and over.
Where is the innovation. There isn't any.
They experience the bare minimum, that's not creative people even if interns they may pick up on some things but also not contribute/learn much other then the state of the industry regardless of how well Insomniac operates as a studio their design is just as bland just less management awkward as other studios. Wow what a saving grace. XD
Creative people have broader ideas they can get through. But that doesn't happen. They can think up anything random not even copy paste, or if a trend or striking game, how to spin it off their own way and still be original.
What world does that happen in I don't see it as we aren't living it in, only few studios/staff do that, 90% of them are what they are currently and uncreative. I rarely see it at all.
Sure graphics techniques, but otherwise writing has changed per era as they do, but game design has been stagnant. That and more RAM, same GPU/CPU (capability aside being a benefit yes), just more and more of something isn't exciting even in action we see it designed with in different ways regardless of budget.
They can have skills in animation, programming, writing, etc. But they don't in making a stand out products, or actually random thought it up mentality or it getting approved by staff or creative ideas at all.
Most people don't pay attention to game design just what emotionally appealed to them of themes, characters or other factors or was popular/familiar who are even more brain dead of art, so basically uncreative people that don't have a brain. They have skills, but not a creative bone in their body strong enough and leadership can also prohibit that based on the project's goal.
If I was an art teacher asking people to think more creative, they wouldn't pass at all. They'd be just as standardised or reference repetitive then original.
Part 2:
Or the demands of publishers/leaders are why they are comfort/consistently boring too. But I don't respect any 20 somethings with just as bland ideas let alone the 1% of good ideas they have that can't get through because leadership stop that happening.
No one dives deep enough for fiction or game design. No one. It's always reference, not thought up. They may have the skills, but a creative angle to it I don't see it. Even Indies disappoint with nostalgia and not even understanding the creativity of old games, they completely miss the point. That's why I get so annoyed at Indies too, they don't have that spin off approach I'm look for when following trends or trying something new. They are too comfortable, experience too little or don't use their brains broader for creative ideas, or they don't get approved by others or are too much for players, so hence comfort gets created instead.
Don't make me laugh Insomniac I haven't seen any at all. No one is willing to risk it just safe 'innovations' not dramatic ones because staff are bland, pubs are bland and players want this slop. We don't get innovation at all, none that people aren't comfortable with that's why we get the lack of innovation or the priorities/mentalities we do nowadays in target audience or dev execution being so terrible.
So interns don't get me that much more excited for what effect they have to give here.
If it's a decent game sure but even Spiderman was more boring besides like a few puzzles and like what 2 side missions I actually liked, besides a good story, the rest was open world formulaic garbage then Sunset Overdrive was more thrilling in it's ideas not just setting, but gameplay ideas.
Ratchet 2016/Rift Apart are trash. So I have no interest in their current or future projects. Their creativity/mentality is set in stone or Sony has what they want so even more reason I have no interest as I don't like Sony's current demands for games. I have no interest in any of them even Astro in it's direction of creativity being better than the rest (even above Ratchet/Sackboy/GT disappointing directions over the years) but not enough for me to care.
Even watching the intros videos for some staff over the years made me laugh/angry based on nonsense they said, they hire generic people, we have boring leadership demands, no wonder these studios suck, and some of the contributions because the design of their games, some of the things they said or the main staff contribute, the past few years has been pathetic and dismal.
@PuppetMaster the marvel studio yawn
@twitchtvpat I think Spidey 3 and a new R&C doesn't need a leak anymore because both are their current best selling franchise. As for X-Men, maybe this one isn't legit but they already working on Wolverine. So it's not a far fetch if they also got the license for X-Men.
@Toot1st Can you blame them to stick with Marvel IP's that generates money and keep them afloat?
I mean. A lot of Insomniac original IP's either barely break even or ended as a flop. Outside Spyro which is owned by MS / Acti-Bliz, R&C which is their best selling original IP, and Resistance which has mixed sales numbers, the rest of their games doesn't do well. Look at Fuse, Sunset Overdrive, Song of the Deep, Stormland, Outernauts, or Edge of Nowhere which you probably only played one or two of them.
