This is similar to the Apple head jack scenario, but a couple key differences make me think this will end much differently:
There was still an option to use wired earbuds with a dongle, which I saw a lot of friends and family use. I actually know a few people that still do this. From what we’re being told, physical discs won’t be an option on PS6. And if they are, you can’t use them with newer games.
Even for those that bought wireless headphones right away, that is a somewhat cheap upgrade with multiple third party alternatives. These headphones still play all your current music. If you want to play PS6 games, you’ll have to buy their $700-$1000 machine. And games, you’ll most likely only be able to buy them from PS’s storefront.
The average gamer is very different than the average iPhone user. iPhone users will upgrade their phones for little reason. Gamers are very intentional with their upgrades and more passionate about their devices and accessories since it’s a big hobby for them. I see gamers sticking to their guns compared to the average Joe who just texts, FaceTimes, and plays some Clash of Clans on their iPhone.
I’m very fortunate to have built my gaming PC with a 4080 Super back in 2024. I’m sure there will be a couple PS6 exclusives I’ll want overtime but it just isn’t worth the $800-$1000 price tag it’ll cost with no physical media.
I’m basically just rocking PC and Switch 2 next gen. I’ll be able to play just about everything minus a small handful of PS6 exclusives. I’m more than happy with that.
The studio behind Eternal and Dark Ages (2 of my favorite games of the past 6 years) is now just a support studio. This is so lame. My condolences to those who lost their jobs and even the remaining devs that don’t know what their future holds.
2026 has been really dark for gaming news. I’m honestly thinking of just dropping following it all. When I’m playing games I’m still having a blast but going online is just a catastrophe or negative news.
They’ll get a decent bump from gta 6 but after that, I see PlayStation tanking. They’re going to have a $750 or more machine with no disc drive, no way to buy games cheaper from other distributors, higher subscription prices, and less games releasing than ever. I have trouble seeing who will want to pay into that.
They can stick to their guns if they want. But me and many others are done. I’m sticking with PC and Nintendo.
I actually stopped playing on PC a bit ago because it was pretty much a 5-10 minute process for me to get the game started, and that’s without any errors.
I’d open the CoD app, wait close to 2 minutes, it would say “update requires restart”, it would reopen and waste another minute, then it would open Black Ops 6 client which sometimes errored out or just re-opened the regular CoD client. Then the Black Ops 6 menu is separate from the “online menu” so then it would shut down that and reopen in the online menu. It took so long it’s just frustrating.
I’m really hoping this works fine now. It was a disgraceful unoptimized mess and Activision should be ashamed of it.
Investors care more about controlling the market rather than reading it. They want us to own nothing, pay premiums for products with zero ability to resell or repair, and subscribe to a million subscriptions.
I really hope everyone here and the general public votes with their wallets. I feel like most of the casuals will be priced out, anyway.
It’s rare I want a product in one of my favorite hobbies to fail… but I hope the PS6 is a train wreck.
@twitchtvpat I have a lot of games on the PS Vita store but I’d like to not resort to piracy, especially with the console connected to my Ps account. I can’t fit a ton of game in my vitas memory card so yeah, u redownload a couple games or more from the store each year.
I didn’t mean to turn this into an argument. You’re fine to disagree with my opinion. I just think it’s worrying for long time fans. But I guess the seven seas exists for a reason.
@twitchtvpat Years. But it’s the “players will still be able to download previously purchased content after the closing date for the foreseeable future” that’s concerning. They can rip your games away from you at any point. Gotta read the full comment.
“We’re taking down the storefronts for older consoles, and you’ll only be able to access your current digital games on them for the foreseeable future”
Just another reason to stick with physical media and PC for digital.
I’m out. I’m fortunate enough to have a good PC so I’ll stick to upgrading that + getting Nintendo consoles for the rest of my life. If I’m buying digital, why wouldn’t I use PC clients like Steam and cheap key sites? Cheaper games and better performance.
No buy. Not that I’m a big gta fan anyway. I’ll wait til the inevitable PC version and price drop. It hurts a lot because Rockstar is an industry leader, so other companies will follow suit with code in boxes.
Funny enough, I think releasing around the time of GTA 6 is actually a smart move now since every other title is trying to avoid it. Being the only other option during the holiday season could actually bring in big sales.
Every game these days has to try and be a souls-like or rogue-lite. Im still keeping an eye on this and will remain hopeful, but my interest just shot down a lot. Every rogue-like game I’ve played I got bored of fast due to replaying the same things over and over. For some that’s fun due to trying different builds and moves, but for me it’s boring and repetitive.
I’ll remain a bit optimistic as the articles states there are different campaigns with different runs. So maybe it’s just long Grand Prix sets with high difficulty options. If that’s the case, I’m in. I’ll just have to wait and see.
I also don’t play online multiplayer much at all these days. So I’m really hoping the single player is up my alley.
I wouldn’t pay more than $500 for a console, especially with the way the economy has been and where I’m at in life. I’m fine with the PS5 being the primary console for another 2-4 years lol.
One of the easiest “no”s of my life lol. I’m hoping component prices can come down. It’d be nice for the next gen systems to not be close to a grand, especially with Microsoft and Sony being publicly traded.
One of the dumbest and anti-consumer decisions I’ve ever seen. Considering Halo was a local multiplayer staple back in the day, this is disrespectful to players purchasing the game. Basically asking a user to spend $200ish just to play local multiplayer with their buddy.
I’m going to be a glass half full guy here and say they made a mistake and just meant you need 2 PlayStation accounts.
I actually haven’t purchased any games this year yet due to it being a very busy and financially tight year. Okay, I bought a couple games that were heavily discounted titles that came out last year.
That said, a LOT of amazing games have released which I plan to pick up around the fall/holiday season when they drop in price and my free time opens up.
The best game I played this year is Forza Horizon 6 (got 3 months of free game pass a while back that I was saving til this game dropped). Number 2 would be Pokopia, which was a surprise from girlfriend for my birthday.
This really is one of the best years for gaming. Can’t wait to play more titles!
People aren’t going to like this but… news flash: every company is using AI for just about all software. It’s now a tool for all software developer to use to help them write and correct code quickly.
I’m not saying I love AI, but the reality is just about every game is using us to expedite development now. The key is just not using AI “slop” like generative drawings, 3D models, etc., at least for now.
It always interests me why companies don’t release these humongous DLC packs as standalone games. I guess it usually saved consumers that already had the game money. But requires newcomers to buy the base game and the expansion. Regardless, it’s cool to see more Witcher content before the fourth entry.
I had this on the Wii, which apparently was just the PS2 version without a couple modes but with online play. I was around 12 so having a shooter was a ton of fun. I guess it was a bit like Uncharted, in retrospect.
I’m actually all for re-reviewing games. The company should still be held accountable by having the original reviews up but for consumers I think it makes sense to see what the game is like currently and not in the past.
Saying I forgot SEGA acquired Rovio isn’t true. I actually never knew! I thought they went out of their way to get the rights to use Red in this game lol.
The game looks really good and a lot of good patches have arrived. That said, I’ll be waiting for a steep discount and more updates. Too many games to play lol.
Man I’m getting lucky. I had this in my cart in the Steam sale and then last second took it out saying I’d get to it later. Looks like I’ll be playing it on my PS5 somewhat soon!
I’m excited for PGA Tour 2K25 and Slime Rancher 2. I already have Monster Hunter Rise, though. They aren’t appearing as available on my end, tho. I’ll check when I’m home from work.
Most of the reviews are very positive with it currently sitting at an 89 on metacritic (91 for specific platforms). To be honest I like the mix of survival horror and action, even if it leans a bit in one direction from time to time.
This seems right up my alley. I won’t be picking it up anytime soon as I’m trying to save money and play through my backlog, but I am excited to play it one day when it’s a lot cheaper!
I thought it was a very good show. I didn’t exactly like the God of War games at the end, as I kinda wish they just announced a new regular game or remasters that will be out soon. But the rest of the show was great.
There are many games I’m looking forward to this year, even if a lot of them I won’t get til they get cheaper and I complete more of my backlog.
I just subbed to PS+ for the first time since 2018 to play Battlefield 6 and Everybody’s Golf: Hot Shots with my brother. Getting access to LEGO Horizon Adventures and Neon White is a big bonus for me!
I think it’ll pose a threat, but not a big one. Possibly enough for them to drop the online requirement for online play if the Steam Machine gets popular enough.
It’s really going to come down to the pricing, availability, and future PS games that go to Steam, imo.
I already don’t pay for PS+. The only online sub I pay for is Switch online but that’s mainly just to access the N64, GBA, and GameCube I grew up with. I say drop the subs lol.
Someday I’ll play the first game as I got the Spacer Choice Edition for free on Epic a year or two ago. If I like that, then I’ll pick up the second one. But that could be years from now lol
It looks great. First person games always annoyed me so this is all the reason to go back and properly beat the game now. Very excited for this, especially since it’s free!
I used to buy multiple games a month when I was younger but now I buy about one game every 2 months or so. I just game way less now and money is becoming tighter.
They’ve been cooking with controllers recently. They tempted me with the Ghost of Yotei gold controller and now this. But I already have 3 controllers and I really only need 1, so no more for me. I have the Spider-Man 2, 30th Anniversary, and Astro Bot editions.
I might even sell one of them since my PS5 is only used for single player.
@AinsleyE Yup. IGN barely even reports on news these days since like 90% of their articles are just advertisements, affiliate links, and random rage bait stories.
Most of them don’t care about reporting news or interacting with the community, they simply only care about pickpocketing money from gamers. That’s why I tend to stick with here, nintendolife, and purexbox.
I still have Ghost of Tsushima to play in my backlog of endless games. Should be starting that up sometime this fall. But Yotei looks fantastic so as long as I like Tsushima even a bit, I’ll probably pick up Yotei in the near future
I’ve been playing it a bit this weekend on my PS5 and loving it. That said, I don’t completely disagree with the criticisms in this review. But I’m a sucker for very basic 3D platformers and collect-a-thons.
