Just in case you missed it, Valve announced the (admittedly well-named) Steam Machine earlier this week. And no, it's got nothing to do with Daft Punk.
It's an enticingly small box that's designed to kind of bridge the gap between PC and console. Basically, you can hook this thing up to your TV and use it as a Steam-based console, with full access to your Steam library through a simple account login.
The question though, at least from our PlayStation perspective, is whether it poses any challenge to Sony's business.
To be clear, Valve has explored this idea of console-leaning hardware before. Back in 2015, the company launched a series of gaming PCs that used SteamOS. At the time, the same question of there being a new competitor in the console space was raised — but it soon became obvious that Valve was mostly just testing the waters.
This iteration of the Steam Machine is much more unified in terms of vision, however, and Valve is launching it off the back of the success that it's found with the Steam Deck. It immediately feels like a more considered effort to expand Steam's potential reach.
As for how it'll actually stack up to the PS5 when it launches next year, the Steam Machine is reportedly weaker than Sony's base hardware — but it should still be more than capable of running the heavy hitters of this generation.
Trying to muscle in on the console market is incredibly difficult — as evidenced by a distinct lack of fresh competition for several decades now. We're even at a point where Xbox has changed the direction of its entire brand in a bid to remain relevant going forward.
It may all come down to cost, then. If Valve can position the Steam Machine as a relatively inexpensive and highly efficient way to play your favourite games, then we dare say there'll be a market for it. Whether that'll be enough to steal some — or any — of Sony's thunder, remains to be seen.
But what do you think? Will PlayStation be keeping an eye on the Steam Machine, or is it going to go down as a well received, but more hardcore device, much like the Steam Deck? Vote in our polls, and then explain your reasoning in the comments section below.
Are you interested in the Steam Machine? (3,788 votes)
- Yes, I'm very interested
- Yeah, it seems like a cool idea
- Kind of, but I need more info
- Nah, it hasn't caught my eye
- No, I have zero interest
Does the Steam Machine pose any threat to PlayStation? (3,607 votes)
- Yes, I could see it being quite popular
- Yeah, as long as it's priced right
- Maybe, I'm not convinced either way
- Nah, it'll find an audience but it won't compete
- No, this thing's gonna bomb

It's a niche product, even if it launches with Half Life 3. Those that want to game on PC will just get a PC.
The steam deck at least had the portability factor and even then it's sold less than 5 million units.
Never was going to. Still awesome that the new Steam Machine exists though, and the more casual players can adopt a PC library at a (potentially) affordable rate (with free online play, among the many other benefits), the merrier! But for those that want to strictly play console, they'll stick with console, and that's fine 😎
I think it will find an audience but I don't think it will be a threat to playstation, as it's not on par power wise and will still be busy playstation exclsives. So far. Can see it being a massive problem for Xbox though. I for one will probably pick one up, as the steam deals are second to none, and I don't have a particularly great PC
@AdamNovice I agree to an extent. Although I think it will sell better than the deck. Depends on price though. If they can get it close to £500 it may do well
Let's be honest the Steam Deck is brilliant, but it has sold circa 4 million units. By console standards that would be an utter flop. But it's not it's just a low volume device.
I expect Steam Machine to be similar, especially with those specs which look behind a PS5 (with PS6 likely launching within 2 years) and the price likely to be higher too.
Digital Foundry said the performance is somewhere between a Series S and a PS5. I was extremely disappointed by this, I was expecting better performance than PS5 Pro. I‘m a noob when it comes to PC hardware so the specs didn‘t really tell me anything
Like asking whether a OnePlus or a Huawei flagship phone is a threat to iPhone. The Chinese phones may have significant advantages and even a at a lower cost but it's not a global brand name, with a loyal global audience.
So no, be about as successful as the last real atari console relatively
No, it's a daft idea that will be punked by PlayStation. It is known.
It's going to be very niche, there's no reason for current console owners to jump ship as its a weaker console than the base PS5 and Series X, and in two years will be even more outdated when the next Playstation and Xbox release. Plus they have tried this "steam machine" before back in 2015, it was discontinued 3 years later as it flopped.
It's very nice and I'm hoping it does well, but I don't feel that it's going to muscle in on PlayStation and Nintendo, nor do I think it's trying to.
For myself, if I wasn't already entrenched in the Nintendo and PlayStation ecosystems I'd absolutely get one of these, but as things stand I don't need it. I have a Steam Deck that is criminally underused too, so definitely no need for me to get this.
I am hoping that the VR headset they're releasing alongside this will raise the bar for whatever Sony are planning for PSVR3 though. (Assuming there is a PSVR3 of course.)
It could be the best thing since bread but I will still have zero interest in it. I'm way too entangled in PSN ecosystem at this point.
Edit: That controller looks god awful
Sony needs competition in the console space and if the Steam Machine succeeds that'll be good for everybody
The Deck is barely competition for the Switch, the Machine will barely be competition for PlayStation. I honestly doubt it'll even do much to undermine Xbox's next console, despite how many outlets have already ran with the idea Steam has beaten Microsoft to the punch.
The Machine looks slick — don't get me wrong. And I think I've finally found my VR headset. But this isn't going to completely disrupt the console market.
No threat to Playstation.
Major threat to Xbox.
Definitely interested in it, and I prefer gaming on my PC/Steam Deck these days over Playstation. That said, I don't really see it as a competitor to consoles.
Maybe in the long term it can be a threat to traditional console, but I doubt there are too many people going to buy it over having a console.
I will get one at some point, or the PCboX, but it’s probably not going to be my primary device for buying big AAA games ever. Multiplayer games with no sub needed is quite nice though.
It's weaker than a base ps5 so I'm not interested. If it was more inline with the ps5 Pro and launches at a price that's competitive to the pro then I may have been interested but to be honest there is only one game at the moment that makes really jealous of the pc community and that's asseto corsa rally. That is really the only reason I'd consider this but I'm certain it'll come to us ps5 owners at some point in the future.
Not even remotely interested - if it had been FAR more powerful, I might have at least of taken a proper look at it, but even the top line info shows this isn't close.
Releasing now, I would argue it needs to at least be on par with the rumoured capability of PS6, not less than PS5.
Also - did I hear right that its Linux based - does this limit what older games will work on it?
Edit: answered by @SeaDaVie in reply below - not older games, but certain MP games with Anti Cheat.
If it's priced within the range of a PS5 currently then I could see it raising a few eyebrows. The way they are talking though, it sounds like it might be around at least $800 or so. It's too expensive at that point. It also is likely to be sold through Steam itself like the Deck was and that alone will limit its potential reach quite a bit.
It's an interesting product but I don't think Sony is too worried for now. Now Microsoft on the other hand might be a bit disturbed as this thing basically sounds like a cheaper version of what they are doing next.
Between this and the ROG Xbox Ally X, I'm mostly just excited that there seems to be a willingness to try new things, after a period of relative stagnation.
Look, Steam can dominate the PC market but at the end of the day, if you are looking for a console, most people will end up with either PlayStation or Nintendo (sometimes Xbox).
Not saying the Steam machine will flop but consider the legacy behind PS and Nintendo in terms of console, Steam Machine is still years away before it can be considered as an actual competitor in the console market
No point in it for me, but I’m sure it will sell. Not worried about it coming anywhere near PS5’s sales, though.
With the growth of steam and of gaming in general I can definitely see this becoming a direct competitor to PlayStation. Especially with Microsoft and Sony continuing to release games on pc.
For me personally I was leaning towards pc gaming next gen anyway! Now I have an easy under the tv box I’m 100% pre ordering and leaving PlayStation.
No not a threat whatsoever, but it might be the gateway drug to PC gaming for a handful of curious console gamers.
I plan on getting the Frame VR headset and a Steam Machine. It will replace my PSVR2 and offer me a pain free entry point to PC gaming. But I doubt that it'll change anything about my regular PS5 console gaming. If anything, it might mean that I wait on a PS6 instead of snagging one at launch.
@Rich33 It uses SteamOS which is Linux based, just like the Steam Deck. Any game that doesn’t have a native version will generally run extremely well through Proton(an emulation layer that is extremely good).
The biggest issue is multiplayer games with anti-cheat as they mostly don’t function on Linux.
Personally no, I'm very very interested in one (depending on price) but it doesn't effect my intent to game on my PS5, or 6 whatever that ends up being. I don't see a scenario where PlayStation isn't my 'main' console but looking forward to having this little thing under my TV in time
No it's just a load of hot air
This is where I'm going once there's no physical option from Playstation. Games on PS5 have actually been quite good for running from the disc.
But if I have to buy digital only, Steam is where it's at. I'm lucky I haven't built up a massive playstation digital library outside of the subscription, which I'm happy to let go.
The prices on Playstation store are awful compared to Steam. Plus, no extra cost to play online games either. You'd have to be pretty devoted to Sony to stick with them going forward without a thriving/cheap second hand market.
The Steam Deck is one of my favourite pieces of gaming hardware so I am interested is the Steam Machine but in the end of the day it depends on how much ot actually costs. To be honest I haven't touched my Playstation consoles after I beat Final Fantasy Rebirth except for the occasional retro game while in my Steam Deck I beat Silent Hill 2 and F, Metal Gear Solid 3, the newest Atelier, YS and Trails games and more. It boils down to price. PC games are way cheaper plus you can dump and emulate classic systems.
@Oram77 Definitely the worst “console” controller I’ve ever seen. Can’t imagine trying to use that…
nah. the names pretty lame too, didn’t they already call their previous failure the steam machine? I can see this being a threat to Xbox and possibly a better replacement for it, but playstation (like nintendo) will always have its place - it’s too distinct & established
btw, my pc is already a steam machine since i only play with a controller anyway
@Old-Red Spot on comment. When it comes to digital only (the near future), Steam is unparalleled.
I do think Sony will lose revenue from this but not in any meaningful way. I haven’t bought a game on my PlayStation since I got my Deck and consequentially built a new PC (my old PC was getting long in the tooth but I split my time fairly equally between PlayStation, Switch and PC but now I’m 95% PC and the rest is Switch) and there’s statistically gonna be another person like me with this but yeah, I don’t see this making a big impact.
Doesn’t change that it feels like Christmas for me with all the announcements!
@ButterySmooth30FPS I thought the same about the Steam Deck before I got one and it’s very comfortable to use. The beauty of PC is you can just use an Xbox or PlayStation controller no problem if that works better for you, this is for the weirdos like me who want the trackpads and capacitive bits for gyro. Based on how fervent many fans of the Steam controller are and the response to the Decks controls by its owners I see this being a way bigger success than the first one. Almost certainly still niche though.
But seriously the original steam controller fans were Valve’s secret weapon with the Deck. Near launch every old non controller supporting game that I tried out on it already had at least 1 community profile that translated things pretty well.
@SeaDaVie
Thank you - it was that last bit. I knew I had read/heard that certain games don't run on Linux based systems very well, but I couldn't remember the details! (For some reason, I wrongly thought it might be older games).
No next question. Word up son
Steam Machine will only be a threat to someone trying to hybridize the best aspects of pc’s with the best aspects of consoles while attempting to mitigate the downsides of each. Last I heard, Nintendo isn’t trying to do that…PlayStation isn’t trying to do that…
If priced right, seems like a great emulation machine. With my steamdeck running emulation station and throw in retro achievements, I have so much fun going back playing old games. Now if I can hot swap that microSD card back and forth between my deck and the steam machine this device has my attention.
All I know is that if the Steamcube is comparable to a base PS5 and Valve doesn't require me to pay ten dollars a month to use online features, I will probably make it my main gaming space moving forward.
My PS5 can be reserved strictly for exclusives that are not on Steam.
For someone who has been gaming on consoles and PCs since basically the beginning if you want to count Pong, and why wouldn't you, I think I'm interested in this but honestly I'm still not sure what it is.
Price is first and foremost. I'd dive in if it's cheap, but I doubt it will be b/c nothing is anymore.🤑
How is Valve even funding this? PS doesn't have mandatory paid online and Steam doesn't have a Gamepass option like Netflix last I checked. Though with how many PC games there are in the world I don't know why iy doesn't. Even Apple has Arcade for like $10/m and it only haslikev52 games.
Do I have to use that awful controller or can I use 1 of my 5 PS5 controllers?
Is it plug and play like a console or do I still need to fiddle w/ settings for every game?
Will it run currently way too expensive Gamepass games should I get a trial fora month?
Does it plug into a socket like a console or PC or one of those specific bricjsor dongles?
If it works like a console, but a PC on my TV for all Steam games, for $499, I might pick it up. After a year or so to see if they're still supporting it. I'm not paying for an Ouya doorstop.
I'm definitely taking a "wait and see" approach with the next gen Sony and Microsoft consoles. I feel like Sony has abandoned most of the classic franchises I enjoyed (Socom, Killzone, LBP), and the direction Microsoft and Valve (PC's with a console-like interface) are going with has me intrigued.
If it provides the same “ease of use” as a PlayStation without the need for subscription tiers for online capabilities, yes, it poses a threat.
Simples Noooooooooooo
They'd need to sell it in stores to make it sell in my opinion. Having it only purchasable through Steam only (and I don't know if they sell Valve hardware on Amazon or any other e-commerce site) will hinder sales numbers and relevance.
And I don't mind more competition. Since Microsoft has nearly bowed out of the console space, this would give both Sony and Nintendo much needed pushback (paying for online multiplayer and cloud saves, a few other things, discounts on games, maybe mods) to try add more value and appeal to their audiences (again, if this does end up being a serious competitor against them).
You still have to install shaders on the steam machine and fiddle with the settings quite a bit to get it just right, but the pricing could make a very big difference. Specifically with the 2tb model model price, because 512GB is like one call of duty game and one other game, meaning pretty much nothing 🙄🙄🙄
I’m sure Xbox is very unamused by this announcement though 😂😂😂😂😂😂
Maybe at some point, people find out that games are cheaper on Steam, and online multiplayer is for free.
The new important markets for gaming are centred around mobile and PC, and established publishers are adopting. And it’s not only Valve pushing the PC. Microsoft is both a major publisher and a hardware platform provider, and it’s pushing towards PC as well.
There is no question that console-like PCs are a major threat to classical consoles. And PlayStation is the last remaining classical console!
To the PS5? Not by any reasonable estimation - at this point in the console's life cycle, most people who want one will already have one, and it either will or won't be their preferred platform.
To PlayStation's future consoles? Possibly. For now, there's really not enough information to decide on, but the draw of being able to play from one's Steam library will very much depend on how much someone has invested in theirs - for my part, I have a large catalogue of older games from when I had a gaming rig and high-end laptop years ago, but haven't spent a penny on Steam in the years since, so there's really nothing to tempt me. The target audience seems definitely more 'PC players who already preferred Big Picture mode on the sofa, Steamdeck, etc' than anything else -and to make much of a break beyond that, price would be the defining factor.
Steam Machine poses a much more significant threat to Microsoft than to Sony or Nintendo. There seems to be a bigger PC crossover crowd with XBOX than the Japanese competition. I’m still very curious about the Steam Machine since I no longer have a Gaming PC. I also have a PS5 Pro and Nintendo Switch, so I’m not pinned down to one device or ecosystem.
@UltimateOtaku91 It flopped, because they didn't have Proton. They do now. That is the differenc. In 2015 you had idk 20 games to play? Now it's almost all of them.
If it’s priced right, I think I might buy into the Steam Machine. I say this as someone that hasn’t been a PC gamer since the Sims 2 came out. Say what you will, but I’ve always liked to support all the platforms, and Xbox’s cascade into third party publisher has been negative for PlayStation in being competitive. It’s been a couple years that Xbox has struggled, but the more might PlayStation has had, arguably the more complacent they’ve been. I’ve been on PlayStation consoles for decades now and there’s only one first party game that I’m looking forward to. It just feels off in the console space right now and there needs to be a shake-up.
PS5s been a bit stale for me lately and emulation has taken over my gaming time on the steam deck (and more recently series s) but pretty excited for this. I've also a decent steam library due to the sales, humble bumble and the crazy amount of free games sites give away.
Tbh I've been very disappointed with this generation. I'm looking to jump ship next gen, and I've been on primarily PlayStation since the first console. Not having to pay for multiplayer, and being able to play any of my PC games with a controller on the couch sounds insanely appetizing to me.
No unless it gains access to all of the mass market popular games that have multiplayer such as the countless EA sports games, COD, Fortnite and games similar to those. Since none of those games currently work on Steam OS because of their anti-cheat protocols then it won't really pose a risk to any mainstream games consoles. The price is moot if people won't be able to play their friends in those kinds of games to ever pose a threat to PlayStation or even Xbox.
@GamingFan4Lyf @Gremio108 @playstation1995 @Balaam_ No threat whatsoever and Valve is muffing a perfect opportunity here. Since xbox decided to urinate all over themselves 2 gens now, a window has opened up for another player to come in and strive.
The DF breakdown makes it evident that its too underpowered. It's under a base ps5, lol, what good is that? Nintendo gets by with this w/ exclusives. PS is king of 1st party. Valve doesn't have this.
But what Valve could have, is a default place to play superior 3rd party games. Can you imagine playing Cyberpunk with the graphics settings the PC master race gloats about in our faces, but in the convenience of a console???? Or Witcher 4 when that drops? Battlefield 6 and so on, and so on....
But no, they gave this thing just 8gigs of Vram. What is the point of having a console that does what your xbox or ps does in terms of 3rd party, but underpowered? Its pointless. Lol What a whiff at an opportune time man!!!
It really boils down to price, and im afraid it will be north of a grand at least.
Otherwise it could be a nice gateway for console players to get into PC gaming, without the hassle of building your own PC from the ground up or trusting a prebuilt.
Dont think it will post any significant threat to playstation tho, nor is it designed to.
Im definetly excited!
I have zero interest in it. Give me the PS6 and next Xbox any day. I have libraries on those platforms and not steam. Plus i want power. This device is weak with 8GB of VRAM. I have a high end Oled tv i game on so i want high res. I don’t even find the Dual sense to be a comfy controller there is no way i would like that thing. It looks as bad as all the other Steam controllers if not worse. I am out. PS6 and next Xbox day one for me.
@HonestHick i remember when you were considering a PC in the future, i guess you’ve changed your mind?
I’m not understanding the hype. Isn’t this just a mini PC? So just a Valve branded version of something that exists, is a pretty crowded space, and at least based on specs isn’t doing anything to stand out?
Only interested in it for playing old Command and Conquer games . So if the price is right this is going to be my rts machine
If Sony continues to release their games on PC, this will definitely be a threat to PlayStation.
Because eventually, even the last person will realize that you don't need a PlayStation to play God of War or Spider-Man anymore.
I hope this announcement is the wake-up call for Sony to finally understand what Valve is really up to. But I fear that Totokoi is far too greedy and only sees the quick buck.
@Cjam36 Pretty much. Small form-factor/home theater PCs have been a thing for years. SteamOS can be downloaded and installed by anyone, as well.
@KawakiisaFraud I’m never going to PC no matter what happens. If consoles go away, so do I.
@ButterySmooth30FPS
Me too.
However, we need to slowly realize that Sony is going down the same path as Microsoft and will massively damage or even destroy the PlayStation brand. And we PlayStation players are the big losers.
@KawakiisaFraud Are they? And even if they do, as long as I can play the games I want on a Sony console, I’ll be fine.
With how lacklustre this generation has been for Sony, people who enjoy PlayStation better hope Valve bring some much needed competition, or the future is VERY bleak.
Yeah, this is all noise. Playstation aren't going anywhere. And why would you prefer a machine that's probably around Series S level, coming out in 2026?
And by the time PS6 has had it's run, it'll be nearly ten years on. Why wish your life away projecting optional misery onto yourself years into the future?
I already bought a little mini-pc running bazzite for the older lower resource PC games in my backlog. I don't need a second one.
If this was more powerful I'd say maybe it competes with the next PlayStation, but this is for an entirely different audience or as a second PC used for indie games and to stream to your TV
No because it won’t have any exclusive games
This is absolutely a competitor. It isn't like that stream only console that died years ago. It's not niche. It's going to challenge the PS5 and the PS6. I've had Steam Deck for a couple of years and been playing console and PC games for decades.
People here have no idea why this is going to compete. It has the best of PC, Steam, and console pros.
@Cjam36 No it's not a mini PC. Those are designed for utility purposes which is obvious from their components. This is closer to a console while still being a PC.
I dont see who its for to be honest. It depends on the price. If its under £500 itll probably do ok. But it isnt making PS5 users move, steam only for the casual user..why ditch your PS5 for that? And PC guys want the customisation, stuck at 8GB VRAM and something only as powerful as a PS5. Really dont see who it is for
@GamingGod ? It'll have 100s of games you can't play on playstation though...so there's that
@JohntheRaptor how do you figure it will challenge when it doesn't have exclusives and plays 3rd party games that are already on all 3 consoles (choice ones on nintendo but still) and at lower settings? Its a tad under the base ps5 in performance. Why would I buy this machine to play the same 3rd party games I'm already getting on ps5 or xbox and running better.
Put some better tech in the thing, truly make it a pc/console hybird, that will give me cyberpunk and similar 3rd party, running graphics settings that set PC's apart from consoles and now we are talking. But no, only 8gigs of Vram. lmao not even close to a threat to any console.
@Deljo it won’t have them all though will it 👌🏻
My friends all play PS5. We have many games we enjoy on the Sony platform. I have a lot of PC games I would love to play with them, but they are resistant to do PC gaming. Something like this could allow them to join me in the PC games, while still enjoying our home on PS5.
I am personally excited for this aspect. But I see it as complimentary to the PS5 environment, not really a one or another kind of competition.
@species North of a grand??? For a console/pc hybrid with the specs of a 2yr old rig and about a tad lower then base ps5? (quoting digital foundry here, don't shoot the messenger).
If that's the case, that would be the biggest rippoff in gaming history. Esp when its just a 3rd party machine compared to consoles. And not be gateway into PC gaming for console players. The ps5pro is optional, not a necessity and that is way under a grand! lol
I have some issues with the spec (mentioned by others above - over-priced and under-powered), so I don't think this one is going to be threatening PlayStation yet.
However, in the longer term, I do believe the open PC format will win out.
PlayStation will be the first fall, with Nintendo trudging on perhaps a decade longer.
But don't expected the balance to tip until the middle of the next decade.
Aside from Nintendo there is a definite homogenisation of video games heading towards PC gaming. The home console will just be using the TV as a window into these platforms. We’re likely to see $1000 consoles next Gen, and gaming is going to become a little more niche. I’m guessing people will choose a single console based on where their friends play and where their libraries predominantly are.
@Cerny the specs between the PS5 and new steam machine aren’t really 1:1. The CPU in the steam machine will blow the PS5 out of the park. The GPU on the other hand… well, the PS5 has 36 RDNA 2-ish compute units compared to 28 RDNA 3 in the steam machine. Yeah, the GPU is lack luster, as is the amount of VRAM. That said, I think valve probably got a good deal for the silicon from AMD and they’re taking a gamble. I think it’s a good thing. Competition is only good for the consumer.
@StitchJones Yeee i mostly agree, i still think it will find its audience even when priced this way.
PS5, at least at launch, was sold at a loss and the revenue was made up by the games.
Since Steam Machine is sutch an open system Valve cant do that.
They said it wont be priced as a console, more like an entry level PC, my guess would be around a grand, but i could be wrong ofcourse.
If it was a jointly made system by sony and valve to run both steam and Playstation libraries, i could see the appeal, but there's no reason to switch if you have a million trophies and games on your account or if you already just play on pc lol. Idk who this is supposed to be for.
@GamingGod 🤣like what?
Don't think this thing will be a threat at all. I'll definitely not be buying this. I couldn't care less about the stuff Valve puts out
@species I don't think it will be a grand with those specs. If so, that would be a major debacle and no sales. I could be wrong. But DF's breakdown eluded to the fact that they are looking to price this thing in the ballpark of current base consoles. So that's not close to a grand.
To be honest, I have no interest in PC gaming at all. I've been console gaming since Intellivision. But what I will say is, if they made this machine way more beefy and worth a grand, then I would totally be on board. The only thing I feel i miss not being a PC gamer is when a game like Cyberpunk comes along and the PC rigs have this thing looking mind boggling.
If they were giving us a machine with the convenience of a console that could run like that, I'd gladly give them the $1,000. But I have ps5pro, an xboxseriesX (that does nothing but collect dust) so I have no need for a machine that just runs the 3rd party games like a base ps5
It could be, after all anything branded Valve does well even if it sucks. I'm not buying one though, after all the harassment and problems I've had with Steam and their staff, they ain't seeing my money anytime soon.
@Deljo if I was interested in PC games I would own one lol
I’ve had every PlayStation since the start, but I’m willing to leave. I had the original Xbox and the 360 and left that ecosystem, every Sega console from Master System to Dreamcast and feel no loss there, every Ninty console from NES to GameCube and had no problems dropping all their franchises. The main reason I got a PS5 at launch is because it was the only console with VR, which is the most fun gaming has been for me in a long time.
This proposed machine also has a standalone, compatible wireless headset with foveated streaming and a huge number of potential games.
So yes, very interesting for me. The wife also plays mainly on PC and has an existing Steam account.
Games are cheaper. They have their own Achievement system I understand. I don’t play online so don’t care about PC online cheaters or system imbalances…
And Sony are releasing many of their games on PC anyway.
I think it’ll be more of a problem for Xbox than PlayStation. it’ll be a cheaper alternative to what Microsoft is trying to do with the PC pretending to be a console thing. Except that Steam Machine (I prefer Gabe Cube as a name) runs Linux, so it’ll probably run a lot better without all the Windows bloat under the hood.
Still, I hope it does well, PlayStation could use the competition to keep them honest.
@StrickenBiged
I understand it can run this too, and might need to for certain anti cheat / piracy systems? Only read a few articles on it and I haven’t had a gaming PC for decades so not sure.
@Deljo well my favourite franchise Gran Turismo will never go to PC because of the cheaters. Secondly most PS exclusives don’t. Launch on PC day and date so by the time a PC gamer gets to try them I’ll be on the next one 😁
@GamingGod good man 👍
I still don't want a PC as my gaming machine, seems like PS5 will soon be the only option for those who prefer the classic console format, because Switch is a handheld. I'd really like for Sony to stick to what they know best - making great games.
Steam machine vs PS5 - the PS5 should be worried only if the SM costs about 400$... which it won't. Valve already stated "it will be priced as a PC" so I don't expect it to be cheap (my guess is around 700$ average, maybe higher for bigger storage, lower for entry level).
You can play many of Sony's exclusives on it since they are already on Steam, but don't expect them to look as good as they do on PS5 Pro, it doesn't really have the GPU to handle it.
However I'm very happy for the competition, especially if Valve could price it better than expected.
What I'm very interested in is the controller.... at least until they announce its price ha ha. I don't expect it to be lower than 200$...
Hopefully it gets to cover both the Dualsense Edge and the Elite Series 2 in complete shame from a "features/price" p.o.v....
Enough to shake Sony and MS into doing better? We'll see.
If I could play games that aren’t available to console then I’d be interested but it would need to be priced to reflect that. It’s a cool idea regardless and competition is always good
A large amount of people here, apparently do not understand Vram lol.
A RTX 4060 base with 8GB ram performs 99% as well as a RTX 4060 TI with 16GB... The memory Bit, that is what counts.
They are both 128bit, and should at least be 192. 8GB isn't a lot, but we don't know the memory BIT yet do we?
Doubling the ram on that same card, did practically nothing, the 128bit memory ruined it. A high bit memory, even 8gb,
could still do great.
I'm excited for it. Valve supports open source software and it's running their OS which is similar to Linux. You'll be able to squeeze a lot of performance out of this, more then people realize. Thing is, Valve views it as a pc, not just a console, so it already has that advantage.
The PS5 has been out for 5 years and has already been successful in sales. It might prevent future sales, but there's already a lot of PS5 owners who aren't willing to buy another console.
Others have said this, but an apt comparison is the Steam Deck vs. the Nintendo Switch. The Deck is much more powerful and capable, yet the Switch outsold it by nearly 150 million units. That's not competition; that's a niche product versus a mainstream one.
I think Steam Machine 2.0 looks like a great product, and I am sure Valve will sell a few million of them. But the vast, vast majority of PC gamers want to play on a PC, and console gamers already have great options. I will be shocked if Steam Machine hits even 5 percent of PS5 total sales lifetime.
@JJtheTexan I always thought that would be the issue with this type of hardware: too console for the PC crowd, too PC for the console crowd.
The exciting thing is that it is another streamlined home console-like experience with playstation games on it. I really want one and I have a legit pc tower hooked up to my living room tv already. The form factor should be great for taking to the cabin, hotels, etc.
It won't be an outright threat to playstation but they should be concerned that they might have the only home console without pc like framework.
Maybe the playstation pc app is their solution to this where they can get 100% of theor pc games sales instead of settling for giving 30% to steam, epic, or xbox.
I think it will do great. If it's really just 400 dollars, it is the best you could get for that price and best of all, it's still a full capable pc...
@Batesy125s the leaked suggestions say the base 512gb model is 400 dollars and the upper hand one with 2tb - 800 dollars.
A bit interested and more so in the deck, for the same reason I’m really excited for the PS handheld. The specs aren’t ideal across the board so it’ll come down to price whether I cave.
A big reason I don’t think this will threaten PS is I don’t think they’ll promote it and stock it alongside consoles in stores. If they don’t a huge percentage of people won’t even know it exists, so it’ll never get into the console space.
For the console masses they’ll also have little interest in a PC trying to be console like.
I feel this is a bigger threat to Xbox at the moment. I do think Valves approach might help keep Sony a little more on their toes though, which can only be a good thing as a consumer!
I will say though, as a PS fan first currently, the place I could see me moving to most as an alternative is Steam, via the Machine and Deck.
I think it’ll pose a threat, but not a big one. Possibly enough for them to drop the online requirement for online play if the Steam Machine gets popular enough.
It’s really going to come down to the pricing, availability, and future PS games that go to Steam, imo.
They just drop the ball significantly on the GPU side of things.. RDNA3 and 8GB VRAM in 2026.. It better be cheap!..
@PHIISON honestly this feels like its for casual gamers who want to dip into pc gaming with out buying a gaming pc. i don't really see it being competitive to a playstation if its ps5 or ps6 as a base ps5 is more powerful then this.
@Bamila ya but the difference between a gaming pc and this is that a gaming pc you can upgrade while this is set to what its at and not upgrade-able.
So, if the SM is less powerful than PS5, what is the point?
Depending on the price I can see me getting one to play my Steam library on the big tv downstairs, but it'd be something that works alongside my consoles rather than replace them.
The announced Steam Machine doesn't really pose a threat. But I see this machine as a testbed/first step into a new market.
If Valve makes a "Steam Machine Pro" and dials that up to 11 on the performance front, and release that within the timeframe of the next-gen consoles (PS6, nextXbox), then I can see myself moving away from consoles completely. I have a huge Steam library, and I love the Steam Deck, and the flexibility and opennes of the platform (I don't have to wait for YEARS and PAY to increase fps from 30-60, which is STUPID, for example). Oh and I don't have to pay the insane $80 yearly to just be able to play online and have cloud saves!!!
Actually if everything works as good as I hope, I can see myself replacing my PS5/PS6, Switch, Meta Quest 3 with a Steam Machine, Steam Frame and Steam Deck. It is a dream setup, instead of the fragmented setup I have now where I literally have to buy the games in 3 different places to be able to play them where I want to play them. With SteamOS based devices I can just buy it on Steam, and that's it. Cloud saves syncs between devices, and I can even play a normal game in the VR headset if I want to, or on the TV, or on the Deck. PERFECT. No online/cloud save fee, no Windows OS to deal with, no sitting in front of the computer desk, buy the game once, full syncing between devices, no ***** roadblocks which Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo has. Full access to settings. Fully able to test EVERY game I buy for 2 hours and get a FULL REFUND - no questions asked! it's exactly the setup I've been dreaming about for a LONG time!
Its all about price. If they come in around the same price and performance as PS5, Sony has a big problem on their hands.
If it's reasonably priced I could be interested. Not to replace my PS5, but to supplement it. I'm interested in some indie games that release only for PC and while my basic desktop can probably play some of them on lower graphics settings, some it can't handle at all. I don't need something that can play AAA titles on the best graphics settings though, so specs a bit lower than PS5 would be totally fine for me.
@rjejr
How are Valve funding it - They take a 30% cut on Steam games and are privately owned so not beholden to stock holders.
You can use whatever controller you want as long as it has bluetooth or a dongle. Steam Input is a universal translation layer so you can use all kinds of controllers pretty seemlessly.
If it's like the Steam Deck (which I assume it will be considering it has the same OS) most games auto detect well enough that you don't need to go into settings. Some games like Cyberpunk have a Steam Deck graphics mode where it goes to their pretuned settings automatically.
Unless you install Windows on it you won't get gamepass unfortunately. There are fairly easy ways to get games from GOG or the Epic Game Store on Steam Deck using a 3rd party launcher but nothing for Gamepass yet.
Power supply is in the machine itself, it just has a standard figure 8 power input on the back.
@StitchJones Yee im in a different debacle. I used to be a PC gamer all the way until very recently.
And while i love the PS5 pro and switch2 and consider myself primarily a console main i still miss some RTS games and grand strategy games like hearts of iron which are just better with mouse and keyboard.
Not sure id be interested in Steam Machine no matter how much it is, some cheap laptop would be better for my use.
Maybe Valve will make a Steam Machine Pro in the future capable of running a modded Cyberpunk xD
@ILikeStake df already did a hands on video , its bellow a ps5 and above a xbox series S , they didn't know who this was for as its not really the 4k 60fps machine they are advertising. honestly i don't even think the are marketing it as something to compete against a ps5.
@species at that point if thats what you really want just get a pc that you can fully upgrade instead of a pc box that you can't do anything with in terms of upgrades.
@nomither6 yeah still not in love with the 50 series GPU’s. So i am waiting for next gen and going to give that a look. I never gamed on PC before, but i have learned a lot this year on them and still wouldn’t mind building one in the future. I have a bigger collection of Xbox games so i am for sure taking a look at their next offering before a PC build. PS6 is for a few Sony games here and there and if i can play some or most of them on the next Xbox or PC i wouldn’t really need a PS6. However this steam box is doing nothing for me. That controller looks awful and the power is not there.
Rumors say that Half-Life 3 will launch alongside with the Steam Machine. That could ship some boxes.
@twitchtvpat Does it do 4k/60 or not? I read somewhere that it does, even though there is an asterisk. If it does 4k/60 (even virtually) and comes in around the same price, its definitely a problem for Sony.
Probably won't, but it absolutely should! I find valves approach that respects its consumers very welcome and should have others follow suit.
One of many examples... faceplates. It's a gimmick that won't bring in lot's of money for Sony, yet still they go out of their way to sue custom case manufacturers.
Valve releases CAD files. Pretty much "have fun tinkering"
Another example, the switch dock. It comes with the switch, most people won't buy an extra dock. Still Nintendo makes the switch incompatible with 3rd party docks.
These are just minor ways in which the big brands step on consumer rights, but exactly the fact that it goes to such minor, unprofitable areas just underlines the corporate pettiness of these companies. Still, many so willingly pledge tribal allegiance to these companies.
The only point that still speaks for traditional consoles is that they still have physical media to resell, but with game key cards and empty Blu-ray's, that becomes less of an advantage as time passes.
So if the future is inevitably all-digital, then it'll be PC for me.
If I could run the occasional Windows CG apps I might be interested. I like buying new tech but not convinced I need to add this to my Pro and Switch 2.
I'm not interested since i'm done with PC gaming for years and i really doubt this is a threat to PS or even Switch.
I'm not sure who's the target audience for this either. Anyone who has Steam account pretty much owned a PC rig or Steam Deck.
But i guess this is one of the reason why Sony said they're gonna slow down and more selective on releasing their 1st party games for PC.
@ILikeStake its upscalled 4k not native. , its the same as saying , " the xbox series S is gonna give the ps5 pro/ ps6 a run for its money." maybe watch the digital foundry video to see it in action but at this point it very much isn't even a thought for sony tbh. i mean if you have a pc already with any thing from the most recent years , you literally have no reason to buy this.
It’s no threat to the ps5, but if the price is right I’ll pick one up. I like my steam deck but I’d probably sell it to buy this because I’d appreciate a bit of extra power.
I’m intrigued by how they price and position this.
@species if they really wanted it to be a PC/console hybrid then they should have designed it to be upgradable or have different tiers, just like there's diff graphics cards avail. Even Digital foundry said they can't understand why you get this option to have a 512gb SSD model or the 2TB model. Those are the only two buying options. They would have liked to see it come in the standard 8gigs of Vram, but an optional higher end model of 16gigs of Vram, since that is whats holding the machine back.
And besides, 512gig version is insane. You can't fit crap on only a 1/2 of a terabyte these days. The whole thing was porly executed IMO, but they were in prime position to do something really great since Xbox is urinating all over themselves, taking themselves out of the equation. But Valve fumbled the ball big time
i think there is a reason why there were no prices in the video, and it will be expensive.
i mean when describing the steam machine they were like "wow it has leds".
and lets not forget how the steam deck was going to "revolutionise" gaming from steam fanboys and is outsold by the vita, and switch remained untoched.
hard to say, let's hope that seeing the steam machine sony stops porting games to pc.
Lets remember the context here.
Steamdeck sold around 3 million units over three years.
Internet chat doesn't translate into real world sales; and that's reality.
Sorry, but the PS5, not to mention the PS5 Pro, feels like a more luxury product compared to this thing. 🎮✨
Lol, no! For a start, dualsense, and then the exclusives
It really depends on the price and ease of use.
If it can get those things right, it will take market share from PS5 and maybe a bit from Nintendo, as Microsoft effectively has nothing more to take from in the next couple of years.
I see more and more millennials and Gen X gamers who had consoles since childhood moving over to PC.
If there are casual people on the fence about a new console. And one comes out that can play pc, ps, xbox games cheaply and at a decent framerate and resolution, then yes it'll have an impact. If there are millions of ps4 holdovers and they buy the steam machine instead of a ps5, it'll have an impact. A lot of "ifs."
@Batesy125s gonna be 550-650 imo. That too we've seen Playstation can cut 100-150 quid whenever they want. This device is for hardcore PC gamers in valves ecosystem
I say this as a PlayStation fan but if Valve nail the price then I'll likely switch to steam for most of my gaming, especially since Sony seems keen on porting their first party games to PC anyways. The fact that you can also install whatever apps you want only sweetens the deal.
The steam machine is a threat to playstation but not with the hardware that is about to be released. The threat is from the open platform steamOS which people will be installing on their own hardware. Valve has also given permission to other OEM's to build and release steamOS gaming PC's. SteamOS will be a big thing in gaming by the time a PS6 is released in about 2 years.
I think this is what Microsoft is aiming for for their next xbox imo.
@twitchtvpat I think you are overestimating the knowledge of the average consumer. Most people do not visit digital foundry or know the difference between 4k upscaling and native 4k. If this is priced right, I think people are going to buy them and realize Steam games are more plentiful and cheaper. Sony will have to answer by being more aggressive with pricing which is great for everyone. Not to mention free online play with most titles. This may be the shake up the industry needs with the slow death of the Xbox. Suddenly console buyers have an option to get way way way more software. Games sell systems. Again though this is all if it is priced right.
@ATaco Exactly this, Sony will have to change some stuff.
@VeganH eh have you seen it in action? i would suggest there are plenty of videos of it out there. after seeing this in action i have no idea who is it for , if you have a gaming pc , you already have something better already , if you have a console like a ps5 base or pro its already better then this, going from a ps5 to this would be a downgrade.
@ILikeStake but who is this for? i mean you can buy a pc right now more powerful for slightly more money then probably this would cost , that you can upgrade , but once this is outdated you would have to buy another one which i guess which makes it like a console. i bought a gaming rig 5 years ago , and i could prob go 4-5 more years with out touching it. i guess it would be good for people that aren't into consoles but that don't want to fully commit to a full gaming pc. but thats just me this whole unit is confusing in who they are marketing it to.
@twitchtvpat yeah this definitely is made for the console masses not for enthusiasts that visit gaming sites. It is not confusing to me at all, its supposed to be a new gaming console, it is not geared towards traditional PC gamers that want max power. They'll be able to slap 4k on the box and market it as the next best console with free online. If the money is right, I know I keep saying that but that really is the big key here, but if it is, Valve will pac man up console marketshare fairly quickly. Games are cheaper and way more of them. And btw Sony puts their games on there too.
Also imagine with this paradigm, consoles can come out at a rapid pace. Trade in programs, monthly subsidized payments like cell phones, contracts, the good ol residual dollar comes into play. This could be nuts when you think about it. Gaming is ripe for the picking. I dont support that but I could definitely see it happening.
It's a threat the same way pc in general is. I don't think it's gonna actually do much if it's not priced accordingly and isn't promoted like a regular console is. If they sell it the way they sell steam decks it's guaranteed to not warrant such an article in the 1st place
@ILikeStake i don't really see it taking over the console market with something that less powerful then any of the consoles currently on the market other then the series S. i give it maybe 6-8 million units which would be pretty good for them tbh. you also have to take in the part that they only sell these things on their store , other then resellers selling them for more money on amazon and ebay.
@twitchtvpat fair enough, I guess the future remains to be seen. What they price it at and how they market it will be a huge factor. I also dont see it taking over the console market, but definitely get a good piece of the pie
@ILikeStake with all that being said , i still think its an interesting device , i'll keep an eye out on it, i already bought a steam deck ( funny story by selling csgo skins i got it for free pretty much) but i don't really use it as much as i expected to. and honestly im gonna suggest it to a friend that was considering getting a gaming pc , but he just wanted to play steam games with out spending too much money on a rig.
@badmotorfinger74 Next to the ps5 and especially the ps6, the steam machine gets nothing but Outshined !, Outshined !, Outshined
Its as much threat as the Steam Deck is to the Switch
My wife and I are quite fussy gamers, and we’re couch gamers…not sat at a PC. There have been times in the past when we tried to setup a couch/PC setup when we only have a MacBook (nvidia/lap keyboard etc).
The purpose this will serve us is to greatly increase our choice of games. The slight drop in power doesn’t bother me, so long as it works, and maybe we’re part of a niche but there’s an audience out there who want pc games without going down the gaming pc route.
I think the threat, is showing people what PC can offer. Maybe it isn't as powerful as the PS5 or Series X. Once people see what PC can offer them, they'd more than likely throw down for a better rig.
It's not a threat to PS becoming less relevant, its a threat by showing console mains/casuals what justa litle bit more cash can do for you.
If it's open, like a PC in general, then it has a huge amount of appeal. If I can potentially install PCSX2, Duckstation, and other emulators to the system, as well as play PS games that seem to reliably come to PC these days, as well as my whole Steam library, on top of my RS14 CDLC, and all of that on top of additional software for productivity, as well as being able to play games online without a subscription, then yes. Absolutely. The aforementioned is worth sacrificing some power for.
The SteamCube will be successful if the price is right.
People talking about it being near 1000 in price. The specs are between a series S and a PS5.
If the price doesn't match thise specs then its dead in the water.
I don't think anyone is going to really buy 1, if the price is higher than a ps5 pro.
Considering you can probably build a proper PC for around that price and it will have better specs.
We have to think the PS5 is selling right now for 429.99.
You cant sell it double that.
If it hits around that price, it wont touch playstation but Xbox may aswel just become a third party publisher and forget the console market.
I have a deck, I used it docked whilst away at sea because the PS5 generated too much heat in my cabin, mad as that sounds, and I would quite happily put a steam machine with its open eco system in my living room. It will increase the longevity of PSVR2 hopefully in that space as I only use it with pc now. Steam is a very good way to play and without Windows getting in the way I just hope it's not bonkersly priced.
@Mythologue it should be the same as the deck and EMUDECK saves a great deal of hassle trying to set up emulators. I hadn't even thought of that, another good reason.
@cainhurst94 and yet I play my epic and gog games easily on my Deck, the skills of people out there make this a very enticing choice.
The only thing that poses a threat to PS is PS itself and how SE runs the business.
Your never gonna give up your ps5 for one as its likely to run AAA games significantly worse than one and cost more than a pro.
But, as an ancillary machine that lets you play all those cheap AA indie titles that often just remain on steam, its has a real attraction. I have a high power big tower pc but never use it for games as its just not the same experience for me. The ability to just pick up a controller, switch on and play in no time in on the big telly is appealing, especially as reports suggest the machine is not noisy at all. Work my current gpu and all the fans turn up and it becomes a heater, wouldnt have that under the telly, so this unit appeals. It will be pricey, but Im still interested, but not at the expense of the PS5, thats going nowhere.
Removed - unconstructive feedback
It boils down to cost. If Valve charge $500 for a machine without a controller then you may as well just buy a PS5.
Removed - flaming/arguing
The steam deck sold 4m in 4 years. In console terms that is a bomb. I don't expect this to be much different.
@Northern_munkey been actually trying this ACR.. this is another advantage on PC, many games launch in early access and can stay there for over a year, and these versions are usually available only on PC. There are other many other examples, Assetto Corsa EVO is still in early access almost a year already, Enshrouded is almost 2 years
There's a chance that it could pose a threat to PS but it all comes down to price and how well it performs but even then I think the threat is minimal.
I look at this machine as very niche, PC gamers will stick to thier pcs and console gamers will probably stick to more powerful consoles.
@Fatewalker yeah I can wait. I don't really want to go the whole pc rig route again unless I really have to.
@MrStark good luck with that..
My son asked about it, but although we own all the major consoles and PC, most of his time is spent on Valorant, Fortnite, Roblox, or Minecraft. I'm not sure this device would aid in any of that.
I'm not sure as this Gen Z and now Gen Alpha get jobs and discretionary income in 10-15 years, where exactly their loyalties will evolve into, vis a vis the technological advances.
I could see this Steam Machine getting obsoleted along with everything else in favor of cloud streaming.
Dear friend @Gremio108
In a world where money gets created out of thin air,
"hot air" may serve some purpose and worth something!
Removed - off-topic
All those people saying things like:
"oh but it will cost you less in the long run (No PS plus sub for MP / lower game cost), even if the upfront cost is a little higher"
This is not how things work for a large number these days - people have been 'programmed' to seek out cheap upfront, even if the cost over time is MUCH higher.
The vast majority of the sort of person that would think along the lines of total lifetime cost, would be those who would be wanting something FAR more capable than this underpowered device.
This device is only appealing to a small niche of people who want a light PC to play back catalogue only - possibly as a second device in the home.
Not the same public!
Frankly there are less and less exclusive games on consoles... Sadly too few indie games compare to what you can get on PC. I'm very excited by the steam machine.
Will I abandon my PS5 ? For the moment, no. Why? Many Japanese shmups are released on switch or PS4. So I can't find those games on. Xbox serie x. People are excited by some new hardware, but they need to keep their head cool : the steam machine is NOT a super system with the last Nvidia graphical card !!
Take out FSR and this 4K 60hz is just a mirage !! Still the form factor (sorry but the PS5 is an ugly machine), the new steam controller (WITH TMR joysticks ... You can still dream of those with Dual sense controllers...) and of course a VERY rich catalog with REAL interesting discounts is not a bad deal too.
Time for Sony or Microsoft to innovate a little for the next Gen!!!!
I find it hilarious how when Nintendo releases an “underpowered” console they get blasted for it, but this device isn’t even on par with a base PS5 from 2020 and it gets praised LOL
The moment Kojima dies or drops Sony exclusivity, I am dropping the PS.
no, it will not for some obvious reasons:
1. little to no marketing and retail presence to compete with sony. only those in the know will even be aware of the steam machine. it will be niche and far from mainstream, just like the deck which has sold under 5m units in 3 years.
2. outdated specs. the base ps5 is more powerful than the steam machine. i.e. steam machine will be outdated the day it releases and many games won't even run well on it such as mgs 3 remake and silent hill f.
3. due to economies of scale, it is very unlikely that valve will be able to match ps5's price. currently, it is listed at $500USD for a base ps5 slim digital. sony orders parts in the tens of millions. valve cannot do this for such a niche product so the pricing will likely be a bit more expensive, despite worse performance.
4. steam machine doesn't have a target demographic. who is it for? ps5 users have no reason to jump if they are getting a better experience on ps5. core pc gamers will find the steam machine underpowered. those who are undecided likely don't have the knowledge to get into the pc space and would be far better off buying a console (no tweaking, troubleshooting or fuss required). those who are already pc gamers and are gaming on underpowerwed laptops: the steam machine seems most suited for them.
5. there is a world where a steam machine could have posed more of a threat, but this is not it. in the future, if valve puts out a steam machine that can rival ps5 performance at $100 cheaper, then they may be onto something. as it stands, this looks like a weird experiment that is not going to sway many people. its a neat idea but the pc space still has ways to go to be as user friendly and seamless as consoles if they hope to attract that mainstream user. perhaps that day will never arrive. also, while software optimization on console is not what it used to be, it still provides an advantage over the pc space — you generally get more out of your hardware on console due to the nature of game development and devs focusing their resources on a single hardware configuaration. for this reason alone, a console will remain relevent far longer than any pc (unless you spend more money upgrading).
price still remains to be seen of course... maybe valve is willing to take a major hit on the hardware in exchange for market share. that used to be the console business model for the ps2 and ps3 and it paid off for sony... valve needs to be very agressive if they have any hope at disrupting the console space. a $400USD steam machine could make some people take notice. anything more just means valve has no interest in competing with sony and wants to carve out its own niche in the pc space instead.
Lol heck no! it's a Mini PC, running SteamOS, on a hardware level of a Series S, none of that says "threat"! 😁
Most PC gamers already have better rigs and prefer Windows and most console gamers don't want the faff of Proton layers AND also have better hardware already!
It's a niche product that may sell as much as the Steam Deck before it, and if it does sell 4 million I predict Valve will throw a party lol
I bought a Legion Go S, Steam OS version with the Z1 extreme chip mainly to play Black Mesa...and the game crashes at the same point each time - monorail ride at the beginning, going into a larger area. This was my first and last foray into the portable PC space - at least with PS5, I know most games will at least be playable, if not at launch then with subsequent patches.
The steam machine may very well be lightning in a bottle. Its a perfect, pre-built intro to PC gaming designed to appeal to console owners. I’ve owned console all my life and haven’t really had the space or know how for a PC. This machine changes things. If the price is right it could eat into the PS playerbase. Perfect timing for it too. Xbox has seemingly given up, Nintendo’s greed is insatiable and PlayStation is becoming complacent.
I appreciate this a PS sub and nuance is not often that prevalent here but when you look at more general gaming communities the consensus appears to be that whilst its a niche product there is a perfect segment in the market for it.
@AdamNovice
Niche? 124 million users monthly? Most having weaker PCs than Steam Machine? Man. Valve has all the statistics, they know very well what they are doing with this.
No it's an alternative, that can live side by side with consoles.
Why would it be a threat?
@Leinad7 That many users, so why hasn't Steam Deck become a Nintendo Switch like mainstream product?
Steam Machine will find it's audience but I can't see any scenario where it's a legitimate competitor to PlayStation.
Steam Machines are a threat to Windows gaming. My Steam library can't wait to finally ditch that intrusive Microsoft OS.
There are a lot of benefits, no reason to mention them again, but this will be a very niche product, more than Steam Deck is.
1. It is a PC first and foremost. it will never be as plug and play as PS5 or Switch.
2. It plays PC games over a compatibility layer, if there is no Linux native version. Most of them unoptimized for the device.
4. You have issues, plug a keyboard and mouse and be ready to troubleshoot.
5. It does not support any game with kernel-level anti-cheat, and the most popular multiplayer titles have.
6. No retail presence, like Steam Deck. You can find PS and Switch consoles and games in every retailer across the world. People aware of this device are only hardcore gamers, so the market is really limited.
7. A bit more technical matter. It baffles me that Steam OS is based on Arch Linux, which targets enthusiasts and is the most bleeding edge Linux distribution. I don't know how they handle updates for Steam OS, but for Arch and Arch-based distributions many times they release broken updates.
It may compete with the next Xbox, but there is no chance Gabecube or Steam Desk to compete with the juggernauts PlayStation and Nintendo are. YouTubers create a lot of noise around these devices, but will never reach the levels of user-friendliness and presence the 2 have. Switch 2 surpassed Deck's sales within a couple of weeks. PS6 will do the same.
Not interested AT ALL with digital only video game machines without physical games.
PS5 for me.
I´m interested as I have big steam library of games I´ve never touched while I had a PC few years back...actually I´m debating with myself if I could pick up steam deck to play games I have on steam, then this announcement came along and will take some time now, will check reviews and looking forward to revealing price...but this is in my opinion no threat to PS, possibly to next xbox.
Any competition for Sony is a good thing, I hope it sells like hot cakes
Hopefully they don’t also rip their client base off with stick drift controllers
@commentlife i hate to say this but it won't, if people were that into pc gaming they would have a gaming pc they would be able to upgrade this isn't upgrade able. also i don't see how it would be competing against playstation when its only sold in one place aside from resellers selling on amazon or other market places.
That’s your new Xbox. Or one of them at least. Microsoft are getting out of hardware, and have been ever since they dipped a toe in and got their leg stuck.
This is the AMD/Valve entry into the vacuum left, and its main competition will be whatever nVidia are about to announce. Expect it to roundly kick this in the nuts. ‘Xbox’ is going to be a Netflix-for-games service available across PC and all compatible consoles, which includes PlayStations. (Like EA’s current subscription service, only good.) It will also become the generic name for a living room games machine. This is an Xbox. nVidia’s will be another Xbox. Build yourself your own Xbox, if you’re cool.
Meanwhile Sony are pulling back from sending PlayStation games multiplatform, which I see as a response. They’ll ring fence their killer IPs like Nintendo do, loss-lead their entry price and try to hang on to their hardware advantage, which is their forte. nVidia have a great track record in graphical performance but they’re starting from near scratch on ergonomics. I’ll likely buy a PS6 for the controller. Sony just make really good gear, generally.
In the new world order, Sony’s PlayStation will market as the premier type of Xbox, and the only one to get PSN instead of Steam.
It's a solution in search of a problem. Most PC gamers will want a PC because of its versatility and upgradability. Most console gamers will want a console because of their plug-and-play nature and familiarity. Steam Machines sit in the middle providing everything except what makes either side desirable. It's got an audience, but that audience does not make up a large percentage of Playstation gamers.
The latest ed. of Digital Foundry's weekly show dissects the steam machine further. They basically rip into this thing and its weak hardware. Saying it sits below a base ps5, which was released 6yrs ago by the time Steam machine comes out.
So this thing poses a threat to nobody. What a wasted opportunity by Valve. Only 8gigs of Vram in 2026, such a joke.
@AdamNovice
Well, that is something we need to wait to see.
I can see that happening. Steam has bigger library. Bigger audience. Better prices. Deck is specific - it is more like a handheld, people who prefer some console plugged in to TV won’t buy it. People want easy plug and play machine and Steam is delivering that this time.
Many people who have weak PC may buy it, a stronger but still cheap machine. Whoever wants more power will buy Xbox PC. And whoever want to stay in closed console ecosystem will stay with PlayStation.
The choice everyone is talking about.
already got a PC so whats the point....
