If you grew up with a PlayStation in the late 90s and early 00s, then chances are you had a Tony Hawk game. For this author, it was the original Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater, but many of you may have jumped in with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 on the PS2.
Wherever you did your first virtual kickflip, there’s a good chance this franchise harbours fond memories for you. And thus you’re probably going to want to know whether remake Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is any good.
Well, the first ratings are in, so let’s break it all down:

Game Informer - 8/10
The THPS series shaped my music taste, fashion sense, and more while also delivering an incredibly fun timesink on my PlayStation 2. A perfect remake of these games would do the same all these years later, or at least remind me why they were so impressionable when I was growing up. While Iron Galaxy has excellently modernized the gameplay and graphics of these classics to feel right in 2025, I wish it had done a better job of highlighting the influence these games once had in their heyday.
IGN - 8/10
Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 3 + 4 is a largely successful rejuvenation of the acclaimed 2001 and 2002 originals, and another very welcome time capsule of everything great about the golden age of early 2000s gaming – before microtransactions and battle passes botched everything right up. Like 2020’s 1 + 2 before it, THPS 3 + 4 proves again the series’ over-the-top skateboarding formula is totally timeless and remains suitable for all skill levels; simple at first blush, but extraordinarily sophisticated beneath the surface for those with the minerals (or the muscle memory) to push their combos to colossal levels. However, syncing THPS4 with the classic two-minute timer of the initial trilogy is probably going to be a sore point with fans who strongly regard the series’ fourth installment as their favourite, and discarding a whopping 80% of the original THPS3 and THPS4 soundtracks is a startlingly naive choice to make about such a famously crucial component of those games. No T.N.T.? Watch me explode.
GameSpot - 8/10
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3+4 is a phenomenal game of skate, one that fans would flock to without hesitation if it weren't for some of the strange decisions regarding the game's Career mode and THPS 4 levels. Some of the changes feel needless, and overall, THPS 4 just doesn't fit as well into the same structure as the original three games. It's also disappointing that newcomers won't be able to experience the fourth game the way it was originally intended. Once the initial disappointment fades, however, you're left with a remake that still handles as well as these games ever have, and that's something that's worth playing no matter who you are.
If you’re waiting for our opinion, then unfortunately pre-release review code was not made available to us. But our in-office skating superstar Stephen Tailby has been assigned the task, and will be bringing you his verdict quicker than Tony Hawk’s world-record 900 at the X Games.
In the meantime, let us know whether you’re planning to pick up this game later in the week below.

Yeah, I read gamespot review and it confirmed that THPS4 was butchered beyond belief. Won't touch this ***** even on gamepass.
Can't wait. Loved THPS3 back in the day.
Safest 8/10 I’ve ever seen!
If you're going to mess with the core of the game, don't remake it. No interest in this package with such a jacked up 4.
@Dalamar Yeah, at least not at full price. Maybe when it comes down to $20 and it can be justified you're "only buying" 3 or something... I can't support them messing so badly with the core of what made 4 4.
I mean, they’re remaking games that currently sit at #8 and #56 of all time on Metacritic. This being in any way not a slam dunk is an issue of their own creation with the butchering of THPS4. Those originals absolutely hold up but this should effectively make me never want to play the original games, as that’s what a good remake does. I’m very much looking forward to Friday because I will hoover up any THPS game but this still represents reviews that are on average a whole lot worse than the originals.
@MFTWrecks @Dalamar No career mode no buy, without it THPS4 is just a re-skin of older games.
Only 10/55 original songs return which is disappointing. THPS 1+2 only 3 songs didn't return. Some of the new songs are good though, they've added Gang of Four, 100 gecs, King Gizzard, etc.
I will wait to see how this game runs on Switch 2 before buying.
Surprised how passionate people are about 4's level design. I skipped straight from 2 to THUG as a kid, so I don't mind what is essentially a level pack for 1+2.
Still, I could've sworn 4's break from its predecessors design was strongly condemned since its release. In fact, I always though 4's reception was what brought about the reinvention of THUG (though I guess you could imagine 4 was THUG's prototype, and that was already the series' trajectory). Incidentally THUG 1+2 when...?
@RoomWithaMoose As I’ve said above THPS4 is the 56th best reviewed game of all time. It has always been a very well regarded game and the free roam suits the levels as that’s what they were designed for.
Dont care what they did or didnt do to THPS 4. Cant wait till Thursday.
Will give this a try on gamepass
In fairness that's a bit of a drop from the first remake. But there isnt many reviews in I guess. Cant argue for the £30 I got it for really though
Can't wait to start, not long now. If i listened to the internet all the time i'd have f all to play🤣
I’ll play it on gamepass since I’m still “fathered in” to it til the end of November. I’m really stoked but also don’t want to give them a full sale for the game since they butchered Pro Skater 4.
This is like the biggest monkey paw situation, and I guarantee if this doesn’t sell as well as the previous game then they’ll can the series again
@KidRyan It's simply not the same game. There's no argument otherwise.
Like, come on. That's like remaking a turn-based game like Pokemon Red but making it real-time combat. Or making GTA3 into a linear mission-only game. They're fundamentally not the same.
I hate that this "remake" is somehow not getting critiqued for so fundamentally changing the way the game it is "remaking" operated.
@MFTWrecks 100% all of this, I was agreeing with you
@MFTWrecks Both IGN and GS spoke negatively about the changes to part 4. To some folks its just not that big of a deal. I personally think a lot of folks on here are overreacting.
@Realist Good for them. To some people, when they buy a remake, they expect to play the game as it was meant to be played. To many, the changes made fundamentally alter the experience to a degree that is not acceptable.
@Jrs1 😂😂😂
I’ve had a good read of Game Spot and others on Metacritic. I wouldn’t personally describe THPS 4 as ‘butchered’ but certainly changed and very different from what they are saying. I’ve never played any Tony Hawk games until the 2020 remake so it does not matter to me but does sound like a missed opportunity and can see why some would be unhappy. That being said all the reviews I’ve seen are overwhelmingly positive and 100% an arcade antidote to the GAAS garbage of 2025.
Cdkeys doing £40 PSN voucher for £35 so this is already pre-installed ready for release. Cannot wait.
I’m just pleased we are still getting these types of games!
So massive bug in it what crashes your PS5 so hard the console turns off.
I take it people know you can add a 10min or 60min timer to any level in career mode through the assists menu
I think some people are a little confused over what the word remake actually means!
"make (something) again or differently"
@MFTWrecks to others, they expect a remake, i.e. made differently.
