@Northern_munkey I don't want to share too much in these comments, and I've already shared a lot, haha, but trust me when I tell you that I am intimately acquainted with that particular brand of cancer, afflicting that particular sort of family member. My genuine, thorough, and deepest condolences. I don't know what else to say.
I hope you're having a day that at least tries to live up to what you deserve.
@AhmadSumadi I feel you. I really enjoy playing games and watching things that I used to enjoy with my brother. One of my favorite games of all time is the original Resident Evil 4, because when we weren't getting along for a few years, going our separate ways in life, we independently fell in love with that masterpiece. So when we had to live together again, unexpectedly, our mutual adoration for it helped us rebuild our bond that we had lost.
He'll be six years gone, soon. I'm grateful for all the memories I have, because they're of great comfort every single day. I'm sure you feel the same. Hope you're having a good day. ππͺπ
@get2sammyb I have to say, as someone who didn't grow up playing much of the genre and isn't familiar with this series, this article doesn't really tell me much more than "pay attention to this release," but I suppose it told me effectively, haha.
Should I give this a try if I've never been more than a vaguely casual fan of the genre but I'm interested in video game history in general and can appreciate quality game design? I have a feeling I know what you'll say, but I can't reliably distinguish an R-Type from a Gradius over here π .
I think the best option for me would have been "I play horror games whenever. If I happen to be in the mood for one around Spooky Time, it's just a nice bonus."
As a big fan of multiple Bethesda titles, I have learned not to take this man at his word. They may be working on Fallout 5, sure, but knowing that wouldn't change my mind.
@Czar_Khastik You have a great weekend too. Game well! (I'm trying to get that going as a sign-off, though I'm fully aware the double meaning may be less clever than I think, haha)
@PerpetualBoredom Yeah, @Czar_Khastik's replies have stuck out to me, among others'. The whole Hookshot Media community has been very nice to step into; I just signed up maybe two months ago and it's been wonderful overall.
@PerpetualBoredom Hahaha, thank you so much! I get a little proud of my stupid comments sometimes (only sometimes!) because I love absurdist humor, so it means a lot to read that. Hope you're having a great day. π
@ShogunRok Heads up, missing an n in the last paragraph: "there's a underlying dreariness..." Also, just so you know, I caught this over on the review roundup on Pure Xbox, meaning it's also missing there.
Sounds a little uneven, like the first game, but I'm okay with that. Hope I get a chance to play it someday.
Fun fact: Lisa, the terrifying phantom the player encounters in the game, is actually always just behind you, ready to help you with your verb conjugation, though you wouldn't ever know it.
No mention of Tekken Ball?! That's it, I'm breaking up with you, Robert. And no, I'm not "overreacting" or "crying while typing" or any of those other fancy psychology terms you like to sling around.
@WobberleyBob I can only speak to the first one, but I had a lot of fun with it on PS4. They really let you zoom in to see the dinos at ground level and you can even build little electric car rides for your guests (well, sphere rides) to enter and tour the exhibits and you can hop into one at any time.
I'm excited to try 2 and 3 at some point; hope I get to.
@Odium I'd honestly love a good story featuring Ryu, but yeah, thin narrative and silly dialogue is par for the course with these excellent games. As to the rest of your comment, I gotta ask: can you dismember someone in a way that is aggressive but not overly so?
As it should be. Beating Ninja Gaiden Black on the second-hardest difficulty is still one of my favorite personal gaming accomplishments. Still wanna go back and do Ninja Master someday...
@AdamantiumPriest I'm a fan of the zapping system, and even I love the idea of replacing it with overlapping scenarios. It would take some story reworking, but I think this would be a good call.
@WhoderMan Then I'd go 0 -> 1 -> 2 -> 3. Then, if you want more, step into 4 and experience my favorite game in the series (or play the 4 remake, which I recently played and thoroughly enjoyed). Only play 5 if you REALLY want more of 4. I love it, but it was never as good as 4 and if you don't have a co-op partner, it can been frustrating (though personally, I enjoy playing with the co-op AI too, jank as it is). Avoid 6. 6 is constructed entirely of farts. I love RE, but 6 has even less soul than 5, and 5 was already hurting for it. Have fun and enjoy the series!
@WhoderMan Have you ever played 0 or 1 before? And are you referring to REmake when you mention 1 (the GameCube game that then got an HD upgrade)? If you've never played them and you're going to play REmake, I would play 0 before 1. If you've played a version of REmake before and are replaying, but haven't played 0 before, I'd play 0 after 1.
My reasoning is that REmake is the much better game and it'll be less fun to go "backwards." 0 does some interesting things mechanically, but it's a step down in a lot of ways after 1's brilliance. So if you're going in fresh, 0 -> 1 will feel better both mechanically and narratively. The games tie into each other, but 0's story is weaker and sets up 1's story, rather than spoiling it. Plus, I think it's neat to have a fuller idea of who Rebecca is by playing as her in 0, so if you ever see her again π, it'll make those moments more interesting.
I always prefer to go 1 -> 0 when I replay, but that's because I know the games and I just like playing them in the order I did back in the day. For a fresh playthrough, I think 0 first will whet your appetite if you enjoy the older-school vibe and then 1 will take what you enjoyed and intensify it.
Also, if 0 frustrates you and certain elements like having no item boxes make you question continuing, I'd urge you to consider dropping it and moving to 1. 1 is a much less frustrating game and 0 is the only entry that does certain things like that. Additionally, 0's story isn't essential (one of the things I really want them to improve upon with a remake as it's got some good ideas!). I personally like the partner-switching (a lot) and dropping items in the world whenever you like, rather than having to run back to an item box, is interesting to me, but mainly because I know they were just mechanical experiments; another reason to go 0 -> 1. Some people start with 0 and think the whole series isn't for them and that's a shame.
But whatever you do, you can't really do it "wrong" as long as you have fun, and I hope you do! (Sorry this came out much longer than you were likely expecting, haha!)
I'm one of the 11 weirdos who likes 0. Flawed, to be sure, but it did some cool things. After playing the 2 and 4 remakes, I really think Capcom could do some great things with 0 as a base. I'm hoping this is true!
Huh, certainly didn't expect that. Would be more useful if it was extended to beyond 30 days, as others have said, but I'll take it. Could be handy at a glance.

@TruestoryYep Based on your other comment on this article, I get the feeling you're arguing in bad faith. The Malagasy players seem quite happy with the way their culture is being represented, so I'll have to defer to them, and given that you used the word "Madagascan" and not "Malagasy," I'm guessing you're not among them. If you're not Malagasy, I genuinely couldn't care about your opinion on how Malagasy she looks. Nothing personal.
@ItsAlwaysSunnyyy To add to what others have said: the various martial forms in the shows are based on actual martial arts styles, which is one of the reasons the fight scenes flow so well. Additionally, the in-universe script that the characters use is fully functional and custom-developed with the help of calligraphy scholars to keep it realistic and respectful. In case details like that pique your interest at all. They really went to great lengths to build the world in some cool ways.
Agreed about the design, but it's always fun to get characters from parts of the world that we often don't. I can't think of another Madagascan character off the top of my head and I had no idea the area had its own martial art. Very cool!
It does look pretty good. It's a shame that a series with such beauty, lore, and character has yet to get a great game. Here's hoping this is the first.
@get2sammyb Are you a Futurama fan? The way I got a friend of mine to finally check out The Last Airbender was by telling him that its head writer also wrote some of his favorite Futurama and Mission Hill episodes. Just in case that's a plus for you or anyone else who sees this comment.
I've been bad about taking advantage of my weekends of late, but I plan to play more Ivalice Chronicles, as well as checking out Cocoon and finally starting River City Girls. I didn't grow up with Streets of Rage (we were an SNES family), but I recently had a blast with 4 and I'd like to keep that momentum going. Play well, all! (Hmm, I like that. I might start saying that more often.)
