Just What Is Going on with Sony and Indie Dev Giant Squid? 1

There’s been some speculation overnight that Sony may have strengthened its relationship with indie developer Giant Squid.

The ever-eagle eyed Gematsu noticed both the platform holder and Santa Monica studio filed a joint European trademark for the game Sword of the Sea, which recently released to rave reviews.

While it’s not ground-breaking news, it is somewhat unusual.

Some are speculating that PlayStation may have acquired the intellectual property, while others believe Giant Squid could be poised to become a first-party developer.

We suspect the reality may be a lot less exciting, as we know Sony invested quite heavily into Sword of the Sea.

In fact, the dev has gone on record as saying the Japanese giant “saved the game” by providing funding and including it in its PS Plus Extra subscription.

Founder Matt Nava noted:

“It's just fantastic that Sony has a program like that. This big, powerful company has a dedicated group of people inside that really care about the artistic aspect of the medium.”

We’d assume, therefore, PlayStation has some kind of financial stake in this game, which is what’s led to this trademark.

However, we will contact both Sony and Giant Squid to see if we can find out more, and we’ll update if and when we get a response.
