Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 601

Started The Ivalice Chronicles and dang, the presentation is fantastic. I have the original, the PSP release, and the better-than-you're-likely-assuming mobile port and I've never seen this game look so slick. The pixel artwork is great but honestly, I keep staring at the textures on buildings and rocks! The devs took so much care to mimic that lo-fi PSX look but it's so clean. It would've been easy to "upgrade" them so much that they no longer blend with the 2D characters or even oddly upstage them, but the artists showed careful restraint and I love it.

The people who make great modern interpretations and remakes of older titles often say that they try to recreate not how the source material played, but how it made you feel when you played it. Similarly, this new version of FF Tactics doesn't look exactly like the original, but rather how I remember the original looking in my rapt, reverent mind. Very cool.

Re: That New Digimon Game's Looking Like a Big Hit

I have yet to really try a Digimon game. Cyber Sleuth (I think that's the one) sounded interesting but all I've done is admire it from afar, I guess. The Digimon anime was big when I was young, but I never watched it and so the games are so strange to me, from the outside. The mons are data that just kind of comes together randomly, which is why they can evolve sideways and backwards? And the evolution lines are like cute cat -> sentient gun -> nun with large boobles -> BDSM T-Rex with a sword?

@PuppetMaster Yeah, I feel you. I'm glad they're all still doing well, from what I can tell. Maybe they'll reunite someday for something. Maybe a new Easy Livin' on the beach? How cozy would that be? They did some really great streams... I'll have to queue some up later, now that I think of it. It's been a while since I watched them go through Porky's Haunted Holiday, haha.

@Oram77 "I've said this before but the two lead devs at Sucker Punch were made ambassadors of Tsushima because of the game."

Yeah, the game's positive reception in Japan is so cool to hear about. And I love reading about how the game has helped facilitate some good in Japan too, like this: https://www.eurogamer.net/amp/2021-01-11-ghost-of-tsushima-fans-crowdfund-repairs-to-typhoon-hit-island
