Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 401

Just finished Assassins Creed Valhalla last night, 120 hours and power level 459, got the good ending. Lots more to do, but I’ll probably take a breather and look for my next big game.

Kinda was hoping PS5 Cyberpunk would be out by now, but with delay after delay maybe I’ll just do the PS4 version. Gonna look for holiday sales on Far Cry 6 and Riders Republic. Ideally would like a nice open world Fallout-like game for the winter months.

Re: Skyrim Anniversary Edition Upgrade Prices Revealed

@KingPev So I think I want to start the game new, with the new version. So how do mods work with the campaign? Can I toggle some on and off while still working on campaign? Or is it like a special mode where you jump into it to use mods, then out to do the campaign? Not worried about achievements but would like to play the campaign as it was.

Re: Marvel's Avengers Dumps Damaging XP Booster Microtransactions

frankmcma

@themightyant Yes I am well aware of the nerf. I play live services games and nerfs and buffs are part of the drill. That, actually, is what keeps you playing. Constant calibrating. I've got hundreds of hours in Borderlands 3 and I feel like nerfs/buffs were just about weekly between modes, enemies, equipment and regions.

The reason I did not mention it is because I find it hard to believe that the company is that nefarious. Like standing at a whiteboard and planning an XP booster with a XP nerf. I also find it hard to believe they would be that stupid, with the track record the game has had, that would be really kicking a hornet's nest.

Back to Borderlands 3, I just spent 2 years on various B3 message boards where fans screamed weekly that Gearbox was ruining the game with all the changes. "I spent 1200 hours with the game and I am now DONE, SORRY GEARBOX". Of course you see them a few weeks later with a post wondering if legendary loot drops were increased in Athenas.

I play other games like Fallout 76 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint, so I know euphoria and crushing disappointments while devs figure stuff out. I also have 100's of hours in these games that current gamers describe as "dead games". These games actually have a ton of active players and amazing gaming communities.

Of course players, and the internet, still stomp on their graves and claim them as failures, because of (I agree with post #39) they don't like the game but more often because they have never played the game and it's super easy to jump in and hate on them.

Re: Marvel's Avengers Dumps Damaging XP Booster Microtransactions

It's kinda funny that "fans" of the game are constantly up in arms about maintaining the noble integrity of the Marvel Avengers video game.

They are quite happy to vacuum up all the free content add-ons, but when the company has to adjust to keep the game profitable, the fans are screaming and shaking their fists. Not sure if they are even aware that the bad press they have been churning out since launch has caused the company to recalibrate due to probably weak sales. Thanks to them.

The argument seems to be, well, this company just wants to make money. Yes. Yes it does. Just like we all do. Because no one wants to hear "Marvel Avengers servers will shut down on..." earlier than expected. And yet, that's what the "fans" are heading towards.

If you are mad at the game don't play it, if you don't want micro-transactions don't buy them. Don't yell on social to have them banned. I love the option of micro-transactions. I don't have a lot of time to play daily, so its a nice perk if I want it. I get better leveling while supporting the game. So the game can grow, and I can maybe get a sequel.

I feel like Division 2 has one of the most compelling live service gameplay loops, a just-right mix of free stuff, paid seasons, meaty campaign, outfits for sale, etc. I bought a stellar red jacket for $5. I love it. But I was only able to get it because fans were not up in arms about paid jacket content.

Division took a while to get to where it is, and Avengers needs the time long term. To craft that certain balance, supporting a game you love without feeling like its a money grab is quite a tightrope to walk. Hundreds/thousands of hours have been and are being spent trying to figure this out to make the most people happy and engaged.

I just feel like the toxic discussions of games trying to find their way really does not help anyone. Especially from people who have never even played the game and yet have mountains of comments on their perspective or wish "the game would just die already". It's kinda sad.

Re: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Is Ubisoft's Second Most Profitable Game Ever

frankmcma

@WallyWest It does not require an internet connection to play the game on PS4/5, so I don't feel it is a live service game (as opposed to like The Division 2 which definitely is). You lose a few things like the photo sharing mode where the snaps are saved to their servers and the store and Ubisoft connect, not great losses. Next AC is for sure live service.

Re: PS Store Weekend Offers Cover MLB and Ubisoft Games

frankmcma

Fenyx Rising & AC Valhalla, two awesome games. Fenyx if you love Breath of the Wild, Valhalla if you love the Witcher 3. They are not those games, but heavily influenced by them and yet remain original.

Fenyx: Some of the puzzles can get complex (YouTube sometimes required) but everything else is a visual and gameplay delight. Gliding is so zen. Set it to 60fps. Best game color palette ever. It also has a wicked sense of humor that does not take itself too seriously. I really hope we see another game with Fenyx and the rest of the cast.

Valhalla: I played on and off but then really got into it the past few months, over 100 hours so far and could easily do another 100. Heavy Witcher influence, it does not hit Geralt's aged weariness, AC's (female) Eivor is more optimistic and less engaging than the spark plug Kassandra, but there is so much content, storylines and exploring that the bang for the buck is off the charts, especially on sale. Plus season two is coming. Bonus: Love, LOVE games that have snow/winter

MLB The Show 2: I do not know what this is. Sorry.

Re: PS5 Console Sales Reach 13.4 Million After Strong Q2 Period

frankmcma

I still am unclear why the PS5 is not in stores. It made sense at the start of the pandemic, but now? If they are not doing stores, then sell only from the Sony website and require a PSN account. Continuing to sell PS5s to retailers who sell via unpredictable online random restock windows, where scalpers/bots vacuum them up, is just the same mistake over and over. Add in the increasing supply chain and chip issues and I feel like there could be a perfect storm of non-availability for consumers that will catch up and start hitting Sony's bottom line.

Re: Apple Music Confirmed for PS5, Out Today

frankmcma

@velio84 Apple Music is awesome and it has lossless quality that sounds pretty amazing. When they released lossless music on Apple I spun a few Fleetwood Mac songs on headphones, was not expecting too much. Minutes later I was in tears, it was so vivid and real. Spotify was supposed to launch their own version of lossless (Spotify HiFi) but I don't think it ever came out. Apple Music also has spatial audio (3D sound) which sounds great on headphones and surround systems.

Playlists and suggestions work about the same on both platforms, my problem with Spotify is they are pushing non-music stuff all the time in their apps like audio podcasts and (soon) video podcasts. They are trying to battle Apple by trying to add all this other stuff, to capture marketshare. Apple Music is pure music focused for music fans.

Apple Music has a free 3 month trial, which should work with the PS app, so it's worth trying out and comparing.

Re: Gigantic Ghost Recon: Breakpoint Update Adds a Whole New Game Mode, Raises Level Cap to 99

frankmcma

@OMG_Waffles yes there are AI teammates now and they’re pretty cool: https://youtu.be/2qIzQKe5bk0

Gear score can be easily switched off now. There is so much granular customization in the game it’s kinda crazy. The game had a rough launch and the devs spent a year fixing, adding and adjusting features. I never understood the hate for the game but I know many were like “it’s no Wildlands”, I finished the campaign and had fun. Oh they also added 60fps on PS5 a few months back.

Re: Gigantic Ghost Recon: Breakpoint Update Adds a Whole New Game Mode, Raises Level Cap to 99

frankmcma

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, actually this is the first time I’ve said it, but still, no one works harder to give fans what they want than the Breakpoint Team. The Wildlands fan service, new level cap, new modes, free costumes for famous GR characters, granular customization, this all looks awesome. I will definitely be jumping back in. You had me at No Battle Royal Mode…

Re: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Viking Age Discovery Tour Is Out Now on PS5, PS4

frankmcma

@SmokeBombClock Awesome! Yeah I figure this will be a 200 hour (or more) game for me, still a ways to go. I have taken breaks from it in the past year, jumped to another game for a month and then came back. I do feel like it's such a long game that it works to take a breather here and there.

Mastery points sound great, did not know about them! Of course I need to finish the campaign, do the tour, do the Paris DLC, and then oh here comes year two content!

Re: Assassin's Creed Valhalla Viking Age Discovery Tour Is Out Now on PS5, PS4

frankmcma

@Rob_230 I do take my time and explore a lot (probably too much) while doing the campaign, so don’t go by me! Wrath of the Druids was 25 hours alone, and I got 100 levels out of it. It had some great changes to the main game, building trade ports, different enemies, really was a lot of fun, felt fresh and very enjoyable. It does not really tie in to the main campaign, so it can be done at anytime.

Yes AC and Ubi has a lot of haters, mostly from people who don’t play them, but the games have such great depth and are so fun.

I’d also recommend Watch Dogs Legion, another hated on game that is my favorite game of 2021

Re: PS4 Games That Need a PS5 Patch

frankmcma

Red Dead 2 needs it the most, and unfortunately may have the least chance of getting it

Also would like all Watch Dogs games and all Fallout games 60fps. And Far Cry New Dawn

Re: Round Up: Far Cry 6 Reviews Paint a Familiar Open World Picture

frankmcma

Excited for this! Oddly Far Cry has not been on my radar, although I love open world adventure games. I've only played FC New Dawn and I thought it was tight with great mechanics, and enjoyed the twins chewing on the gorgeous, neon-themed scenery (wish they would bump it to 60fps). I typically wait for a few months so Ubi can polish and I can get the $120 version for like $40, but am very interested to dive into this.

Re: Review: Diablo 2: Resurrected (PS5) - This 21-Year Belated Console Debut Still Impresses

frankmcma

I STILL can’t figure out if this game is for me. Loved and played many hours of Diablo III, love looting, love shooting, love mindless clicking. So is this an uncompromising homage to an old PC game that honors that memory for a niche crowd, or is this for D3 fans, a modern take on a classic (like the recent Mass Effect box set) that will tide us over until D4? “Still has several of the problems from the original” is not selling me very hard.

Re: Poll: Did You Buy Deathloop?

frankmcma

@Keyblade-Dan I just googled…Kena is coming out Tuesday?! I’m in!

Also: Deathloop looks very interesting but not quite convinced yet, probably will grab during a holiday PSN sale

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 393

frankmcma

Loot the Universe, Mayhem Made Mild, Show Me the Eridium, and more 2nd anniversary events are keeping me playing Borderlands 3. I’d say it’s a great time to jump back in, but I never left. Excited for Tiny Tina, but B3 always keeps me busy with fresh (and free no micro transactions) content. Also working through Shadow of the Tomb Raider which I find adorable. Dipping into new season of Division 2 but starting to yearn for a new Clancy game. Luckily there are like 5 or 6 coming out. Also playing Assassins Creed Odyssey which is fun to come back to and looks beautiful at 60fps. Downloaded Hitman 2 (and did the steps to play in Hitman 3) so will have to check that out.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 392

frankmcma

More Watch Dogs Legion and Borderlands 3...maybe pick up a new game. I see Biomutant is on sale...how is it?

Off topic but I just noticed that the PSN web store has been redone, seems faster, bigger icons and the prices and discounts are now larger underneath. And if you go full screen on the browser you get the sort options down the right side. Very cool! (now we just need to get the Wish List "heart" icon on the actual cover art icons and we are good to go!)
