Re: PS5 VRR Support Patched into Tiny Tina's Wonderlands

frankmcma

Tiny Tina DLC's are different than Borderlands 3. BL3 had story chapters and these are called "Content Drops" which are short, dense areas with new bosses meant to be rerun. If you love the grind, they are heaven, if you want more add-on characters and stories like BL3, this is not it. As such the season pass is most definitely optional.

Otherwise the game is a total blast, looks gorgeous, very funny, tons to do, play casual or meta, and a perfect intro to those who are Borderlands-curious. Gearbox said this week it has performed beyond what they expected, so I am excited for sequels and also (hopefully) a season 2 with story chapters.

Re: PS Plus Premium's PS5, PS4 Game Trials Have Trophies, and Save Data Carries Over

frankmcma

I still feel like this could be the super power in this new era of PS packages. Ideally it would be a 2 hour trial on a system level, without devs creating a separate demo, but it sounds like a good start. Especially if saves carry over.

I am still unclear on the file. Is there one file that you download and if you like it you "unlock" it with no separate download? Or is the demo a separate file?

Re: Outriders Has so Far Failed to Turn a Profit for Square Enix

frankmcma

People think it was live service because (for some reason) it required an online connection to play. The devs said they needed it for updates or something.

The news is sad, mainly because Outriders is a fantastic game. It's a fast-paced, loud, crunchy looter shooter like the Borderland games. It had some cool features, like being able to "rewind" to any point in the campaign to replay that section, then skip ahead back to where you were. Great for grinding.

The end game was too tough for me, but I finished the campaign and I look forward to the DLC. I hope the new update gives them a big boost in sales and awareness.

Re: PS Plus Extra, Premium Will Add New PS5, PS4 Games Every Month, Sony Confirms

frankmcma

I do wish they would change it so you get to keep the monthly PS Plus games (now PS Plus Essential). I thought the draw of getting a couple free games a month was a good one, although if you decide to cancel PS+, POOF they all get removed from your library. I have 150+ games in there now.

Granted I am not going to cancel anytime soon, and probably will try the higher tiers, but I always thought it would be more of a selling point to actually keep the games, then have them only available during your subscription period.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 423

frankmcma

@Nerdfather1 same for me…loving Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands and it’s also in GOTY territory. Just plain FUN at every turn and so much to do, find, side quest and explore outside of the campaign. Plus the art direction of the many colorful worlds in just stunning. Reminds me a lot of Horizon Forbidden West, where yes you could zip through the campaign and it would be a fine game, but you miss like 80% of the fun of the world with the tons of side stuff. Also love the new T (for Tina) rating, a welcome change after the gore and edginess of the previous games. Very fun (and very funny) game that I don’t want to end

Re: Outriders Worldslayer Expands the Looter Shooter in June, Paid Upgrade on PS5, PS4

frankmcma

Awesome news, I got the game later so I missed all the launch issues, but I loved it and finished the campaign, such a slick, crunchy game and a blast to play. For me I felt the (solo) end game was a little too bullet spongey with wave after wave of mobs, so I am hoping some alternative end game modes will be included. Either way excited to jump back into this game/world again

Re: First Tiny Tina's Wonderlands DLC Out Tomorrow

frankmcma

@Th3solution Maybe I just am conditioned to the way games are now with live services and such, that it's become the norm. When I started Horizon Forbidden West it seemed downright old fashioned with no content roadmap. No micro transactions, no bonus in game loot every few weeks, no DLC, no in game store, no timed events, no in game festival....nothing. Just a single player game and that is that. Along with "maybe some DLC at some point"

I have to say Assassins Creed Valhalla is a good example. That game was ok, it was fine. But instead of doing the campaign I put over 150 hours into it, because it was always changing, evolving, new items, festivals, new DLC, perks, store items, etc. I had fun with the game but because it was always changing, I put in 150 hours instead of like 35.

I do hope Tiny Tina does expand beyond the raid DLCs, check out how much was added in Borderland 3:
https://twitter.com/DeputyPirek/status/1476563930118070278

There are no micro transactions in B3 but they added a TON of stuff over 2 years. There was always new stuff to keep people engaged.

This is so different than Sony first party games which are mostly single player without all the extras. I love these type of games. But sometimes I love all the extras. I guess it depends on the game. Many games I have played and loved in the past year (Ghost Recon Breakpoint, Watch Dogs Legion, Fallout 76, etc) kept me captivated because the devs keep adding and improving and expanding.

Re: First Tiny Tina's Wonderlands DLC Out Tomorrow

frankmcma

Its kinda funny to see the pearl-clutching and "DLC....so...SOON?" lol. Many major games, and many Ubisoft games, including like ACV and Far Cry 6, have monthly content shortly after launch mapped out for half a year or longer. And yes DLC is developed during the game development period (sometimes by a different team). So no big surprise.

Although I now get the feeling that the end game and the DLCs are based around raids. I played tons of B3 and never touched raids because I am not interested. Also not interested in timed or rogue like scenarios. I did buy the full package expecting that the DLCs would be new story chapters and new areas, like B3. Not 30 minute random dungeons where if you die you have to restart. I mean I get that it ties in to D&D, but not sure I would like it. But I am sure I will give it a chance.

The good news is Wonderlands is a fantastic game! It's got everything I wanted from the previous Borderlands along with lots of new twists. I know I will spend a few hundred hours in the base game alone before I am done.

I think the only thing surprising that Gearbox did was do a 2nd season of B3. I think the game was so popular that they kept it going longer. Hopefully this game will expand out in many different ways just like B3, where you always had an incentive to keep playing and use a new system or feature that was added.

Re: Video: Is Live Service Really the Way Forward for PlayStation?

frankmcma

Sony has publicly said they will continue to commit to single player games, they have also said they have a new commitment to live service games. Ignoring one or the other is not an option in 2022 and beyond. Can't they do both? Why is this positioned as Sony is making a mistake? I have single player games I love, and I have live service games I also love. This is what gaming currently is. Sony makes the industry leading console. The market wants both types of games. Why is this a big issue?

Re: Poll: What's Your PS5, PS4 Game of the Year So Far?

frankmcma

Horizon Forbidden West is in the lead, stunning technical achievement that is also a blast to play. Has such a vibrant sense of place. Runner up is Tiny Tiny’s Wonderlands which shakes up the Borderlands formula in very cool ways, for a unique adventure that is actually laugh out loud funny. Honorable mention (in the non-Ashly Burch protagonist category) goes to The Ascent which goes halls deep into cyberpunk style in amazingly, gloriously visual ways.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 420

frankmcma

Doing lots of post-campaign stuff in Horizon Forbidden West. Love getting lost in the game now, and without the pressure to complete the campaign I can just explore, grind for better gear/upgrades and do side quests.

Got The Ascent and about 6 hours in so far. I am not sure twin stick shooters are my thing, and there are some quality of life tweaks that could be made, but my goodness, this game looks, plays and sounds amazing. I am constantly stunned at the rich detail of the world, the colors, the little touches. The gameplay is crunchy, atmospheric and sounds amazing.

I am so used to open worlds that the isometric view feels restrictive, but I keep coming back for the stream of loot, discovery and glorious visuals. For a small team they really knocked it out of the park.

Other than that I am excited Weird West is out, I caught some developer videos past few months and it looks great. Probably give that a try soon. Is anyone playing it? Thoughts?

Re: PS5, PS4 Exclusives May Get Worse if Free with PS Plus Day One

frankmcma

Yes please don't put Sony exclusives into one of these packages.

I think the answer is: Demos

Game Pass is a place to demo games before purchase. Microsoft has said again (and again) sales of games in Game Pass are HIGHER than those not in GP. So sales of Forza Horizon 5 were higher with it in GP (with the very nice GP discount price) than if it were released as a stand alone game.

Sony does mention in it's PS Premium Tier "Time-limited game trials will also be offered in this tier, so customers can try select games before they buy"

I think they should be leaning into this going forward, because again with GP you can try before you buy. It would be cool if they could do, for example, a 2 hour trial on all games...done at the system level. Instead of a separate version that is a limited demo. I know I would buy more games, an enticing PS Plus discount, if I could actually try them out for a bit. And again I think that is the major appeal of GP.

Instead of "yeah maybe...I'll wait until is on Game Pass" it could be "yes I was intrigued, tried the demo day one, ended up really enjoying it, and purchased it with the PS Plus discount"

Re: Apex Legends PS5 Version Out Today, More Updates Soon

frankmcma

Ridiculous question, but can you play solo? Are there creative modes, or modes with bots, etc. Always wanted to give the game a shot but want to ease in and not get left behind starting with co-op after coming to the game so late. Is it co-op newbie friendly?

Re: Rust Developer Signed Up to Create More Fallout 76 Content

frankmcma

@placekicker I feel like this is a solo game with some co-op elements. Each server instance only has a handful of players, and since the map is so massive, you don’t even see others 99% of the time. There are no town squares with dozens of people dancing and wandering. This game is meant to be a solitary apocalypse adventure, like the previous games. Griefing was there in the first few months, but now if anyone gives you trouble they get a bounty on them and are highlighted on the map for all to see. Wasteland takes care of them if you know what I mean.

Re: Rust Developer Signed Up to Create More Fallout 76 Content

frankmcma

@LiamCroft Highly recommended, plus it's always on sale for a low price (currently $13 on PSN). There is so much content in the base game alone, I would not bother with the add-ons just yet. Bethesda's well done Fallout 76 blog is great for keeping up with all that is going on. Also bonus points for one of the nicest communities in any game I have ever played. I played solo 99% of the time, only had interactions during events, when I opened my own store, and also some gave me tours of their amazing buildings that they have created (check out fallout 76 camp builds on YouTube). Otherwise felt like an open world single player RPG. Lotta fun!

Re: Poll: Did You Buy Tiny Tina's Wonderlands?

frankmcma

Cannot wait to start this, however after 300+ hours in Borderlands 3, I feel like it will probably be my main game for months. Problem is I am still playing Horizon Forbidden West, just downloaded The Ascent, want to start Cyberpunk 2077, GTA 5 has me intrigued as does Gran Turismo, and I’m still playing Far Cry 6 which just (finally) added load outs and Stranger Things. So many awesome options currently. But Borderlands is probably my fav game franchise and Gearbox did a stellar job of constant new stuff, endgame and meta with B3 for 2+ years, so yeah I’ll be fitting this game in for sure in the very near future.

Re: Godfall's PlayStation Console Exclusivity Ends in April

frankmcma

The problem is the game rarely goes on sale. When it came to PS Plus there was a brief window where you could upgrade to the full game for a discount rate. I missed it and I don’t know if it’s been on sale since. I am intrigued by the game but did not want just to play the endgame. Hope to pick it up for sale at some point.

Re: Remember Free PS5, PS4 Shooter XDefiant? It's No Longer a Tom Clancy Game

frankmcma

It’s too bad, I do remember the outrage from internet peeps who just judged based on the preview. I love Division 2 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint so I was excited to see what they had in store. Although I guess if Clancy can easily be removed then maybe the name is not needed.

I do feel like last year a half dozen Clancy projects were teased and nothing has come out yet. At least let’s get some new content for Division 2.

Re: 13 Per Cent of Horizon Forbidden West Players Have Finished the Story on PS5, PS4

frankmcma

@BritneyfR_ee I agree. The first game had such emotional weight as Aloy searched for the most important person in her life while unraveling the mystery of what happened to her world. I was invested and the ending was so moving. West is more of a technical story, dense sci-fi stuff which I can't say I completely followed. But West is still the better game, huge advances on just about every single level. The story does have it emotional moments (Sea of Sands arc for example is such compelling storytelling) but I think H3 needs a much simpler story.

Re: 13 Per Cent of Horizon Forbidden West Players Have Finished the Story on PS5, PS4

frankmcma

Currently at around 40 hours, finished campaign, now going back and doing lots of stuff, side quests, exploring. At first I was doing every side quest and doing everything, then after 10 hours I kinda stuck mostly with the campaign while also focusing on jobs and gear + outfit + accessories leveling up. Level 40 now with a powerful build and heading towards the level cap. Still tons to do and it's been very fun!

Re: Horizon Forbidden West Update 1.06 Available Now, Here Are the Patch Notes

frankmcma

@BritneyfR_ee I don’t mind the prompts on what to do next, this is one of the first games in quite a while where I am not sitting with a phone in my lap, trying to google a walk through video of what to do next. Keeps me immersed. I feel like almost every time I am not sure of my next step, Aloy provides some guidance. I too am playing on the easy story mode, and its awesome, it’s challenging and tons of fun, but never confusing or frustrating.
