Have to agree that this is the definitive Borderlands experience because of so many quality of life improvements. This third (4th?) iteration of the series runs like a well-oiled machine. The humor is great, from a main character saying he had to “wait 7 years for this” to a bandit just before death screaming “my chili recipe dies with me!”.
Not specifically mentioned in the review is the dedication to fan service. This is a love letter to all Borderlands fans, where the whole gang gets together to progress the story.
Visuals are great, colorful and bursting with the Borderlands style. I an using the PS4 Pro in Performance mode and have not had issues. I have not done co-op play. I got the season pass, if this is anything like past Borderlands, there will be tons of content to come. Looking forward to the Halloween DLC.
Borderlands started the looter shooter and #3 is a very, very fun ride so far.
Performance mode is best on PS4 Pro. I am several hours in. First 20 minutes you may be looking around at textures on rocks but after a 1/2 hour when you CTFD you get into it and the game rocks. It IS CLASSIC BORDERLANDS (just amped up to 11) so if you did not like the previous, this will not change your mind. Tons of quality of life improvements and fantastic gameplay so far. Love to bounce between Fallout and Borderlands, such great creative worlds! I am glad Borderlands stuck to its guns (sorry) and did not try to change or go with the current trends. Fans will love it. I love it so far.
@KorsaRaph Valid concern since MS bought the studio. However I am still excited to play. Fallout and Borderlands are my fav IPs (currently having a blast in Borderlands Game of the Year and Fallout 76) and its going to be cool to see what the Fallout NV team comes up with. Plus the sequel is half a decade away and a lot could change in the console world but I’m just gonna enjoy this for now when it comes out...
@Kienda omg Horizon Zero Dawn such an amazing RPG. They so nailed it. Doing AC Odyssey (fun, tight combat, great protagonist, but a little too big) and Fallout 76 (actually pretty awesome right now) and recently picked up Far Cry New Dawn which is surprisingly great so far for my first FC game. Interested in Rage 2 but maybe after New Dawn and after it gets a bit discounted.
Burnout Revenge is one of my favorite games of all time. The pinnacle of Burnout in my opinion. But yes these new games seem lower budget. Wish they were higher.
Loving Fallout 76 (for reals) it no doubt had a tough launch but I’ve been spending hours with it and it has improved dramatically in many ways. Like Final Fantasty and Elder Scrollls it was rough out of the gate but getting better and better. Looking forward to the many DLC options coming this year...
@kyleforrester87 Love the Santa hat BTW. Yes I do feel like most people complaining have not actually played it. Even media darling Overwatch was a little rough out of the gate. These type of games are more an ongoing service, so I’d give it some time. But even now, it’s really not as bad as everyone says. I feel like Fallout 76 has the (a little rough) foundation for an awesome game once the add-ons in 2019 start coming out. But even now, it’s a lot of fun!
Am I the only one having fun in this game? A huge open world with a story, events, and lots to explore, it’s been a lot of fun. Elder Scrolls Online took a while to gel and I am sure this will be like No Man’s Sky for a while before Next, but I am not seeing the train wreck everyone else is seeing. People up in arms about a Santa costume should just relax a little. Online MMOs or whatever this is, is more a development over years than a single player release. I’m having fun and I’m giving it a chance. Have not experienced all the crazy glitches people have seen. Anyway I am very curious and excited as to how this game will develop.
@Scarbir Last of Us had quiet moments and intense moments, equally gripping by masterful storytelling. This preview seemed way too graphic and intense. Like a horror movie going from intense unease to full on jump scares. I want an engaging story not a lesson on what real violence really looks like. An explorer mode would be nice, but even better, something to tone down the violence. I think I have played every Naughty Dog game on PS3/PS4 and am always excited for each new one, but this is the first time I thought, maybe this one is not for me. It's only one clip and of course out of context with the rest of the game, so we'll see.
Even though this may not be the best Burnout (that would be, without question, Burnout Revenge) I will still happily buy this.
After years of tepid racing games with online-only requirements, micro-transactions, over-emphasis on customization and unwanted (or needed) story modes, the console racing world needs to get back to basics, back to Burnout and back to the absolute sheer joy of racing.
Slightly off topic, and I am sure it's been mentioned before, but do watch the Noclip Witcher 3 Documentaries. I just finished them (several hours worth) and it gives a real great profile of the CD Projekt Red team and how the Witcher games were created. About as far from a corporate money machine as you can get. Great series.
Instead of being dragged back to hell, after the title menu the game crashes and drags me back to the Playstation main screen. Anyone seeing this? I reinstalled and used my previous backed up save file but can't get past the title screen. May have to wait for an update to the update...
@JLPick I loved Free Realms! What a great game! But yes..another good example. I give a little leeway to MMO's..I can see why they need to be online all the time (such as Elder Scrolls Online) because direct interaction is a part of the expeirence, but when it comes to things like racing games or RPGs, or really any non-MMO game, give an option to toggle on or off online play. Don't make it a requirement. Or you'll lose sales.
@SonuvLiberty Yep me too. I don't know why they don't do these games like Watch Dogs 2, you toggle on online and you can use the features, or you turn it off and it's a contained off-line single player game. The danger is that I will love the game and then a year or two from now because of poor sales the Steep servers will go offline. I too am passing on games I would love to get (The Crew would be right up my ally) when I hear they require an always-on online connection. I think companies will learn this eventually, give players the option for on or off, I just wish they would learn it faster.
Still undecided but the game has pros and cons. Its lighter tone from the first game is the big plus, it's just way more fun with likable characters. My main issue is the tough missions and brutal checkpoint system. Each mission has you up against many foes. When I approach a mission in a compound I look at the mass of enemies patrolling and I just sigh. I've been tactical and measured in taking out each one by one, however it takes time and if you mess up the checkpoint rolls you WAY back to the start. It unfortunately has me now leaning towards spray and pray, since I can often overpower in short order if I am fast enough. I just got tired of spending 25 minutes with stealth only to have a mess up have me do it all over again. So still trying to strike a balance.
I willl say one thing, the graphics look amazing on a PS4 Pro on a 1080p TV. It's not really mentioned anywhere but playing on the Pro, the game samples down for a stunningly smooth jaggy free presentation with brilliant colors that really pop. Really looks fantastic!
So I'll spend more time with it, getting into the groove, but clearly a lot of work and love went into this game. A smaller checkpoint window would make a huge difference, but the game is improved over the first on just about every level.
I too was hoping for a Buzz PS4 game. There are many trivia and quiz games out for PS4 but they all lack what Buzz had...personality and attitude. When you played one of these games the host was an actual character with personality, which made the games very enjoyable.
With the dazzling visuals, and sweeping camera angles, you also felt you really were on a show. Plus the tension with certain games like where your platform sinks down when you miss an answer, gave real spark to the proceedings.
This series was the Uncharted of trivia games, all that is out now is more like Atari Pitfall. It will be missed.
Like many PS4 owners at this point, interest is pretty much gone. Square Enix with the first game sold on both platforms, but I think that combined with the remastered version for the new consoles pushed it over the edge into profitability so a sequel could then be considered.
Instead of going dual platform and keeping the momentum going, they cut a deal for an Xbox One only version. It probably sold ok, but half as much as it potentially could have. MS gave them a check, which helped to cover, but now it's an Xbox One version that did not do big numbers, and a PS4 version coming with momentum lost, having to sell for a reduced amount, and up against many big PS4 games coming before, during and after a potential release.
The silver lining is MS seems to have learned its lesson, as it has inferred in interviews, about buying to make games exclusive. Big different between IP/company that is exclusive to a system (Naughty Dog, etc.) and writing a big check to get marketshare leverage while aggravating half the fan base.
I may change my tune if TR2 comes out at a good price and its PS4 version offers some high quality graphics (this is the first native TR designed ground up for new consoles), but at this point there is so much great stuff out and cool stuff coming for PS4 that TR is definitely on the back burner.
