Investment scam, through and through. Think Theranos, but games. You make a splashy promise, followed up by the barest minimum of deliveries at a drip feed pace (a demo app?! Like, wtf, who falls for that?), combined with some Fraud Lite, to keep the faucets running. Eventually someone gets wise but you can burn through 7-8 figures before that happens.
Slay the Spire is great, I think it has appeal that goes beyond the sum of its parts. I don’t generally like CCG’s, I don’t generally like roguelites, but I played an absolute ton of Slay the Spire.
This whole announcement is VERY murky PR IMHO. Already there is some assumptions being made around some of the wording in the original blog post that are concerning to me, but the internet gonna internet I guess.
Getting this game to play well on a controller would be a real challenge. Some classes, Gunslinger for example, require some fairly complex juggling of a large number of skills.
I think the question that I keep coming back to with any full price game with pay to win mechanics is would the grind be as extensive if the MTX weren't there? If their sole revenue stream was game sales, and therefore the only thing that mattered was how fun is the game, would the progression be the same? Probably not. I know you can just "ignore the MTX" and play the game but that question will pull me out of it every single time. It makes me feel like I'm playing an imperfect product, one that was altered from its most fun state in order to encourage the viability of this second revenue stream. Grind can be OK, but excessive grind, as a nudge towards MTX, is not. IMHO.
I definitely don't want my video game economies mirroring any sort of real world market valuation and inflation trends, especially the 2022 market haha, what about that sounds fun to the average person? Like most of the other dumb Tech Bros. ideas in gaming, I think they're mistaking "cool" for "fun".
A decent presentation, I was not interested and now it's at least on my radar. I have no nostalgia for the ip, but it definitely looks like it could make a great setting for a game if they manage to do it right.
@nts haha geez, who pissed in your Cheerios? I'm clearly just having a bit of a laugh. Also, the headline mentions nothing about magic. You would have to read right to the very bottom for that. Hope lunch goes better than breakfast for you.
Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Car prices fluctuate due to so many real world factors that have no bearing on the game. This is just predation disguised as cool tech, especially given the global state of inflation we currently find ourselves in. That’ll be a no from me.
It’s a possible GOAT for me, although I realize that is a subjective statement. It’s so much more than the sum of its parts, which is what some people seem determined to reduce it to.
All Souls games have had an easy mode, it’s called being a magic user There has NEVER been more options to get seriously OP in a Souls game like there is in Elden Ring. You have options, you just don’t have an option on a menu that says “easy mode”. (Edit: Every Souls game has been like this too, the difficulty settings are built into the systems). You still need to put in SOME effort but this game is the easiest Souls game BY FAR. There will never be a menu option for a difficulty slider in a Souls game and I am HERE. FOR. IT.
I could never get into GT but I’m glad it exists, it is long-standing proof the Sony 1st party library is and can be more than just 3rd person narrative action titles. I almost bought it just to support the idea because I would like to see more products like it from Sony.
I made the plunge on ps5 and I’ve been loving it. I notice the pop in more than the frame dips, it rarely takes me out of the experience. 10/10 for me.
Better off doing nothing at all. It needed to be big, this is nothing but peanuts. Something to make a PR stink about with no actual substance. “Look, we listened! Now pay up, chumps.”
Having a hard time deciding if Digital Foundry is a good or bad thing for the industry. On one hand, it holds devs to a higher standard, which I am all for. On the other hand, it seems to turn a lot of people into wanna-be-analysts who no longer enjoy their games because they noticed a slight pop in or a frame dip. There’s definitely a balance to be struck here.
Having worked for an ad agency, I would guess there’s probably like 2 people having the time of their life and 100 people having the exact opposite haha. Jokes aside, great campaigns. Big time $$$.
Could be cool if they give this to the right creators, but I’m sure it’s probably just another built-in audience play where they’ll put the bare minimum into it knowing enough fans will tune in to guarantee some return.
@munstre I mostly agree with everything you are saying, but to suggest that Sony didn’t have at least a hand in producing these unrealistic expectations is a stretch.
@munstre a gap between expectation and reality exists with the ps5, you even addressed it in your comment. This is because the system was heavily touted as being capable of more than it is during the marketing lead up to its release. Maybe they’re careful now, but they weren’t in their marketing campaign for the system. It even says 8k at 120fps on the box, which is absolutely daft.
Sony shot themselves in the foot just a little bit advertising 4k@60 as somehow being the norm the PS5 would perform at. It simply defies the laws of physics. I’ll gladly play this one at 30fps because it’s more of a visual, narrative experience that isn’t going to test my reflexes in the way a Returnal or Demon’s Souls will. Perfectly playable for this kind of game.
I would love to see something like Monster Hunter: World, within the Horizon universe, as a service. With more of an MMO/social hub over world and a faster release schedule, a la something like Sea of Thieves when they did monthly updates.
I’m excited to see where this goes, but my guard will be up. Huge potentials outside of just some copycat games. I think we will get both if they’re developing that many. I think an MMO or survival crafter or some other genre is just as likely as some sort of competitive shooter thing. I also think a fighting game is a real potential given their interest in EVO and the FGC.
I think this is a fair take given what we know, but I think it’s what we don’t know that might have been the deciding factor. What does Bungie have up their sleeve? How far back has this partnership been brewing? That would make it more of a gamble than an overpayment.
Very curious to see what the first fruits of this partnership will be. I was a massive Halo/Halo 2 fan, but my interest in Destiny couldn’t be any less. Still, an intriguing development.
@frankmcma I think ps+ can be both of those things, which is kind of troubling IMO. If that high subscriber base eventually gets PO’d over a gulf in value or seeks better value elsewhere, that’s big damage potential.
An expected move but the number seems a bit high. I just hope there’s actual variety and not just a dozen Sony-branded battle royales. Such a fickle market, I guess that’s one way of making sure one sticks around long term.
I feel like this game is a really tough sell in 2022 for anyone who isn’t already a fan, and I doubt 30 mins of additional footage is going to change that.
