I believe the reason Battlefield 1 was so successful is that it picked an era not commonly touched for shooters, The Great War, World War One.
This lends itself well due to trench warfare and a different approach we are commonly seeing in games.
This will go one of two ways, they go truly back to its roots and that means an end to crazy killstreaks and nonsensical weaponry, or, as someones already stated, they go alternate timeline which I think would work heaps better, due in part to the fact all that killstreak rubbish is so well established.
Personally Id like them to go into a unique untouched era, The First Afghan War, Crimean or Boer War, or the US Civil War for example, things rarely touched these days if at all.
@starhops the Vanguard characters are all pretty well balanced. My only personal issue is the reach certain Samurai have which appears to extend beyond the actual weapon.
As far as Ive noticed, its pretty well balanced in the fundamentals, Viking Vanguard packs a punch but lacks speed, Samurai is almost the opposite. Time will tell.
@consolfreak1982 thats just it, I dont need to get a 4K TV.
At present I just cant see spending that much on minor improvements because I wont get the full benefits.
Im not knocking anyone that does of course, like yourself, it sounds like youre having a really great experience and thats good.
But when I paid only £80 for a brand new PS4 two days after launch, its hard to see spending 600+ quid (assuming I get a 4K too, as the cheapest I have found is £279) on minor benefits when my current unit does a more than adequate job.
And space I already get once the update drops, as I already own a 3TB hard drive just waiting for me.
When its more affordable and I already own a 4K tele Id absolutely upgrade, but for now, Ill wait.
@consolfreak1982 I dont think its a case of most people hating it. But that initially it didnt seem beneficial outside of 4K. For example, I dont own a 4K TV and have no need to get one either, do that limits the Pros use.
I know there are some folk out there who dont see that as a neccessity.
And thats just it, you either like it or you dont. Personally, load times have never bothered me. Waiting 15 seconds isnt a big deal to me, and dropping that to 10 isnt anything I would consider a huge increase. If you like that cool, more power to you. I play games at under 60fps and am happy with that, and core gameplay is more important to me than how pretty it looks or that it loads 3 seconds faster.
Just my personal opinion. The cost isnt nearly worth those minor inprovements.
Well, a 1tb Pro is £349.99, and the cheapest 4k TV Ive found is £279 and thats by a brand Ive never even heard of.
So £628.99 to play the exact same games as I can now.
Its a toughie…
I mean, if the Pro can magically make actual core gameplay much better, such as making Roach actually act like a horse that knows how to horse, or add features that stop teamkilling in Rainbow Six Siege I might consider it.
@TrueAssassin86x Im guessing you dont ever play ANY mmos then? Or any competetive multiplayer game that has no true single player component?
I agree with him, if you are interested then youve already researched it and are probably going to buy it. If you arent then its the opposite. If "online only" is such a big deal for anyone then the simple solution is dont buy it. Whether a game is enjoyable on the whole is solely down to the player, no review on earth will change that.
And going back to the online only, is it not directly linked to the multiplayer aspect? So much like any MMO ever made ever, its "single player" isnt truly single player, as its within the online universe. Comparing it to a game in which the overarching mechanics are different isnt a good example.
Doubt it would affect online as a rule. Most online games save server side, rather than local. So Id wager it wouldnt really affect competetive online games.
As far as local is concerned though, to each their own.
@Fight_Teza_Fight The final 2 copies of a game are always opened and their "guts" locked in the cabinet so the boxes can be placed on a shelf. The point being its easy to see when you are almost out of stock.
Having worked at GAME here in the UK, I can assure you this isnt unique to GameStop sadly.
Which ultimately led to GAME making poor investment decisions and led them to almost go under.
There are many incentives for many people that will always encourage custom in specialist stores, and its that keyword, specialist.
Sure the rise of digital is certainly a real thing but many still enjoy purchasing physical, and they make for better gifts and such.
They do push for many things, sometimes a bit too much, such as GameCare and DiskCare, both of which I have personally purchased and both of which I have used.
DiskCare in my personal opinion is well worth the cost, a quid to repair or replace a game is the best value youll ever see.
For example, when I moved home, a box got dropped onto a 2 day old copy of Dark Souls 3, had a huge crack across the centre, replaced for essentially £1.
The common misconception that "if I buy preowned, Im depriving the developer and publisher of profit".
Not even close to true, unless bought DIRECTLY from the publisher themselves they arent getting money from you.
All retail copies of games sold in a highstreet store or any other third party are purchased at wholesale, from the publisher prior to launch by the company at the point of sale to the customer, and any money made from the sale in store is store/company profit.
Buying preowned makes absolutely no difference to that margin.
So I just went and read that old review everyones talking about and said comments. Woah!
I mean sure, it shouldve been a bit more clear the end, my point being James had to explain what he meant by his closing comments, which is a clear indication he, at the time, didnt know his audience. Society only moves as fast as its slowest member, and whereas some folks may have understood the jokes, many clearly did not. All a learning curve though right!
Anyway thats in the past, as for these offerings, Im not personally a huge LBP fan, but its a but of a difference in whats commonly offered which is a positive for me. The others not my thing at all, and as I found less than no enjoyment in OlliOlli, Im assuming I wont in this "Not A Hero" game.
Needless to say its a diverse month, which is a positive step in my opinion.
@Tasuki Anything specific that you couldnt get into? I didnt play the beta and am only going of videos and such. If theres any info you can give Im all ears!
Im still holding out hope for a true sports title. Or maybe something like Ace Combat? These types of games are rarely, if ever offered.
Some of the "indies" theyve offered up have been tripe, Tower Of Guns for example. And they should be treated as such, because they are small studios is irrelavent, a crap game is a crap game.
But in all honesty I want to see true variety on the IGC, a full mix of all genres. Not a 5 month stretch of platformers followed by 3 months of pixel art or puzzlers.
Great review regardless, lots of aspects covered so its nice to get an idea of all the things the game can offer.
Some of the things that defined RE as a series are no longer present it seems.
From the soothing music in the safe rooms, to mixing herbs to heal and get rid of poison, to collecting a broken shotgun to stop a ceiling from crushing you.
And although I dont know for certain that these kinds of things arent there, they wouldnt fit this new supposedly "scary" new direction.
Resident Evil was never a scary game, atmospheric yes, scary no.
And whereas 6 was definitely not the greatest it still had that RE charm during the Leon sequences.
Shame really as I loved this series, one of my top 3.
Whereas on paper a Resi would be a good choice it would lead to some confusion given how completely different the new one will be. From art direction to playstyle its like apples and oranges only we just call them fruit.
Im hoping for something like Madden or Formula 1, if only because the only true sports game weve had on there has been NBA within 3 years.
Took a look online at This War Of Mine, thought it looked good so I tried it. Gameplay was so so, but the overarching story and the way you are sometimes forced to make a tough choice, it really is a unique and raw take on war, Id recommend.
@FullbringIchigo Hated Outlast, enjoyed Alien. But the stalking made sense in Alien, it was for all intents and purposes, desgined to be like the first movie.
But I agree with Outlast, thats the very thing that made it poor to me.
Resident Evil has always been about a hero, or group thereof, taking on Umbrella Corp, and fighting zombies and other BOWs, this doesnt fit for me.
This is absoluty not Resident Evil. Having played since 1, this just flatout feels like a completely different game.
Change isnt always bad but this has the impression of being something completely different.
Resident Evil has always had that b movie horror vibe, with the main playable characters being pretty slick. The story has always been crazy ott, and you arent a completely helpless moron.
I dont want to be forced to feel helpless all the time. Im all for limited ammo, RE1 had that, but what Im not for is "oh, even though you absolutely could defend yourself in multiple ways, well force you to be inexplicably hapless and helpless."
Personally, the more I know the better. My enjoyment of the game doesnt rest solely on experiencing the story without knowing anything about it, so it never bothers me.
In fact in most cases, if the general story or gameplay is known to me Ill enjoy it more as Ill be expecting certain events and such.
But lets be honest, being told a spoiler isnt going to ruin something you enjoy, but at the same time, be mindful that not everyone wants to know them.
Mass Effect is top of my list, as BioWare has a knack for great story telling, if at times their worlds are a little unpopulated 😂.
Horizon I have absolutely no interest in at all. It looks pretty but its lacking base level RPG elements for me. I do enjoy open world games and such, Tomb Raider as an example, but if its to be an RPG Id expect more base level elements as Ive said.
Still, this year is nothing if not varied. I just hope they add some true sports games or something to the IGC.
Nada again for me. Nothing peaks my interest to begin with. Point and click is really not something Ive enjoyed since childhood.
Going forward, Id like to see more 100% original PS4 releases on the IGC, as opposed to previously released on PC or XBOX. And more sports titles would be nice also. New year, new chances going forwards so lets see what Febuary offers.
In terms of value, I play online and get all the fringe benefits like discounts and such. However it is very rare that I download the games. I liked the look of Rapture and it turned out quite good. The last game I downloaded and enjoyed prior was NBA, mainly as Im a Basketball fan but also because its the only true sports title Ive ever seen on the IGC in the PS4s lifetime.
I dont enjoy games at all if I have no initial interest before hand and every game Ive tried anyway has been very much a disappointment.
And Im not a believer that its just AAA people want or annoyed at, but that its clear Sony is in fact NOT listening to its user base. I find it hard to believe that many of the offerings are what people want, rather they are just what Sony wants to offer. Keeping your customer happy is a vital part of making profit.
A Formula 1 or Rally game would be nice.
Or another sports title such as MLB or Madden for example.
<Insert entitled or similar here>
It doesnt have to be big brand but an actual sports game wouldnt go amiss since we very rarely see a straight up sports sim on there.
Or maybe a DmC style action slasher?
Since I had no initial interest in those offered this month I havent bothered with them and dont in any way feel Ive missed out.
Im also with the many that are asking for maybe a movie or something instead of a game every month since we very often get a very similar genre list month in month out it would alleviate any of that as a movie completely breaks the mold.
But either way I doubt well see anything truly different so it is what it is.
They cant just leave well enough alone. I actually never purchased this because I would be forced to pay £80 for a game I dont want just to gain access to one I do. This is just an example of the money making machine doing just that, making money by any means. I dont doubt there are many people at IW or whomever who want to make a great game because they enjoy it, but with the abundance of Bobby Kotick types this falls by the wayside.
I mean he openly stated multiple times that "Activision dont care about what they are selling as long as it can be milked for profit", yet people still paid and now here we are.
@Dichotomy charts are done on overall sales rather than quality, and even with a 49% drop its still outselling most other games. But youre right if its still number one, it must stillbe selling a decent margin.
I havent properly engaged in a call of duty in its etirety since Black Ops 2, which was alright campaign wise. Oh and I liked the Ghosts campaign but didnt touch any other mode. So I have no idea if this is a step forward but considering all the flak its been getting, I would guess not.
Not a single shred of interest so I will not enjoy. I picked up EGTTR last month but I think I hit a glitch as I couldnt progress sadly. Still, maybe next month will have something for me.
Im bummed out about this.
Ellies parts were the weakest of the first game.
I dont want her to become a "Joel" without any real context or back story.
Her just becoming a killing machine doesnt make much sense, in contrast to Joel who had 20 years of hardening and internal pain.
My other concern is them staying true to the general narrative of the first game, a brutal world theyve set up.
Joel is a physically able guy, strong and fit.
Yet he still struggles against a single opponent who almost kills him, save from Ellie shooting the person.
Now imagine Ellie in that same position but this time theres an absence of Joel.
If she can magically overpower someone as strong as the man who can overpower Joel, it wouldnt make much sense.
@dris83 I agree. I truly believe the largest frustration is lack of variety. And on the other side of the coin its "you dont like indies, stop expecting aaa all the time, stop being so entitled". Utter rubbish.
The biggest irony in all this is Sony's tagline, "For The Players".
Again, Id wager many complaints come in region of variety. Id like to see more actual sports titles up there, because in 12 months weve had 1, NBA 2K16. Now, many people may say "maybe its due to lower demand", which I feel is nonsense. There is an apparant low demand for the types of games being added yet they are being added regardless. As Ive said before, Indies are not exempt from the same criticisms as any other game, and should be treated the same way on both sides of the coin. I dont understand the need to go onto internet forums and throw out your teddies but I can see some legitimate arguments amongst all the garbage.
Lets put it in perspective. A vast percentage of these Indies have very VERY similar gameplay. To the point that some play and look the same as others. Im not saying thats always bad but imagine if 5 months straight the lineup was very similar, nigh on exactly the same, shooters. Or sports titles and so on. This isnt to say I dislike Indies, or that there arent some real gems in there, Helldivers was a game I sunk hours into, incredible fun. But the crux of it often comes down to the actual gameplay I believe, not solely the fact its "Indy". Of course there are those that are just idiots, complaining regardless, but I for one havent seen that much variance when it comes to Indy games, and when offered month in month out, it gets boring. The same can be said for any type of release.
@adf86 yeah youre right, they didnt.
I personally enjoy the game, but I take issue with the way it was marketed.
And HG did say yes you would be able to come accross another player, but the chances are slim, which of course was proven to be untrue.
Lets all be honest here, they handled the PR extremely poorly, and made promises they werent planning on, or were unable to, keep.
Whether other companies do it is irrelevant, and does not make it acceptable.
@JohnKarnes So how does one go on to explain that two people on the EXACT SAME PLANET, in the EXACT SAME LOCATION, were unable to see each other as was told to us? This point is well documented, they absolutely DID market it with multiplayer capability, of which it has none.
"We werent trying to lie to potential customers" Very disingenuous. To use an extreme example that would be like someone getting drunk to the point they pass out, someone having sex with them and claiming that they "werent trying to rape them" and didnt because they didnt say no. Whether the intent to lie was there or not doesnt change that fact at all. There are numerous issues surrounding their PR.
Id wager some poor marketing decisions probably had an impact on some of those mentioned.
EA releasing Titanfall immediately after Battlefield as has been mentioned likely didnt help. Activisions decision not to allow Modern Warfare to be sold seperately then hiking the price up absurdly for access, add to that the idea that they didnt exactly listen to player feedback.
Watch Dogs had a varied response on launch because apparantly it not looking like it did in trailers and early gameplay changes how good a game is, coupled with The Division doing the same, and thus likely affected peoples perception of Ubisoft as a rule.
@DrJoeystein Absolutely. It was a definite move to sell IW. And since sales were still almost 50% down on last year, that should speak volumes for what people actually wanted.
Personally speaking, I vote with my wallet. Ill gladly just not buy another activision product but its not like theyve hidden theyre out for the cash.
Enjoyed MW on launch. As a Battlefield fan it was nice to see it go in the same direction as Battlefield 2. Exemplary story, characters you actually cared about. However, I do not care for any modern Call of Duty games at all, and its a shame its not standalone, because it would be a must buy if so.
@get2sammyb oh yeah no doubt. For me its just not neccessary at present. Im leaning towards VR first too, so this will likely just take a backseat for now.
To be frank, Im not the least bit fussed. The PS4 Pro isnt going to improve the story or actual gameplay, so I dont feel like its that important to pick one of these up just yet. Of course when my current unit bricks Ill grab one and a new tele to get the updated stuff.
Nah, Im good this month. Id like to see a few more titles like NBA on there tbh. But it is what it is. Ive stopped really caring what they offer on the whole, and as a result when theres a gem like Resident Evil on there Im pleasently surprised.
@Neolit thats true to an extent. I paid for the product based on what I was told to expect from it by those that created it. Which is an informed decision based on information received at the time.
If that information is in fact falsified to ANY degree, I have still already purchased the product based on information I believed to be true. It not being so is NOT my fault, and I should only shoulder the responsibility of believing said information.
Unless you are suggesting I should ignore all information ever given to me about a product?
My purchasing the game does not absolve those that misinformed me of any wrongdoing.
I dont ever like seeing people lose work, their art ridiculed and the like, but thats not whats happening here.
You cant expect to lie about integral and fundamental aspects of a product, sell that product on false hopes and such and not recieve criticism.
I mean, a perfect example being "if two people have the same coords, they can play with each other"
Which was subsequently proven false, to which they had no legitimate reason.
Because they are a small developer, they are not exempt from the same standards and criticisms of anyone else.
Lets hope they can resolve its issues and win back some favour.

Re: Talking Point: Which Free January 2017 PlayStation Plus Games Do You Want?
A Formula 1 or Rally game would be nice.
Or another sports title such as MLB or Madden for example.
<Insert entitled or similar here>
It doesnt have to be big brand but an actual sports game wouldnt go amiss since we very rarely see a straight up sports sim on there.
Re: Poll: Who Is the Best Final Fantasy Protagonist?
Crono by a country mile 😏
Re: Call of Duty Fans Infuriated by Modern Warfare Remastered Supply Drops
@Tasuki that to me is exactly the issue here, its obvious they didnt listen and likely dont care.
And I believe you may be right with your earlier comment about weapons inevitably being put into these drops.
Its just a matter of time.
Re: Call of Duty Fans Infuriated by Modern Warfare Remastered Supply Drops
They cant just leave well enough alone.
I actually never purchased this because I would be forced to pay £80 for a game I dont want just to gain access to one I do.
This is just an example of the money making machine doing just that, making money by any means.
I dont doubt there are many people at IW or whomever who want to make a great game because they enjoy it, but with the abundance of Bobby Kotick types this falls by the wayside.
I mean he openly stated multiple times that "Activision dont care about what they are selling as long as it can be milked for profit", yet people still paid and now here we are.
Re: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Will Be Free on PS4 Before Xmas
@Dichotomy charts are done on overall sales rather than quality, and even with a 49% drop its still outselling most other games.
But youre right if its still number one, it must stillbe selling a decent margin.
Re: Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare Will Be Free on PS4 Before Xmas
I havent properly engaged in a call of duty in its etirety since Black Ops 2, which was alright campaign wise.
Oh and I liked the Ghosts campaign but didnt touch any other mode.
So I have no idea if this is a step forward but considering all the flak its been getting, I would guess not.
Re: Download December's Free PlayStation Plus Games Now
Not a single shred of interest so I will not enjoy.
I picked up EGTTR last month but I think I hit a glitch as I couldnt progress sadly.
Still, maybe next month will have something for me.
Re: PSX 2016: You'll Play As Ellie in The Last of Us: Part II on PS4
Re: The Reaction to December's PlayStation Plus Games Has Not Been Positive
@dris83 I agree.
I truly believe the largest frustration is lack of variety.
And on the other side of the coin its "you dont like indies, stop expecting aaa all the time, stop being so entitled".
Utter rubbish.
Re: The Reaction to December's PlayStation Plus Games Has Not Been Positive
Re: The Reaction to December's PlayStation Plus Games Has Not Been Positive
Re: December PlayStation Plus Games Have Been Revealed
Im still playing through my season on NBA 2K17.
Hit the playoffs as the number one seed with the Bucks, at the conference finals now.
Oh, new plus games? Nah Im good.
Re: Advertising Standards Passes Judgement on No Man's Sky, Says It Didn't Mislead Customers
Re: Advertising Standards Passes Judgement on No Man's Sky, Says It Didn't Mislead Customers
@JohnKarnes
So how does one go on to explain that two people on the EXACT SAME PLANET, in the EXACT SAME LOCATION, were unable to see each other as was told to us?
This point is well documented, they absolutely DID market it with multiplayer capability, of which it has none.
Re: Advertising Standards Passes Judgement on No Man's Sky, Says It Didn't Mislead Customers
"We werent trying to lie to potential customers"
Very disingenuous.
Re: Talking Point: Why Are Fall's Biggest Blockbusters Flopping?
Re: Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (PS4)
@DrJoeystein Absolutely.
It was a definite move to sell IW.
And since sales were still almost 50% down on last year, that should speak volumes for what people actually wanted.
Personally speaking, I vote with my wallet.
Ill gladly just not buy another activision product but its not like theyve hidden theyre out for the cash.
Re: Review: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (PS4)
Enjoyed MW on launch.
As a Battlefield fan it was nice to see it go in the same direction as Battlefield 2.
Exemplary story, characters you actually cared about.
However, I do not care for any modern Call of Duty games at all, and its a shame its not standalone, because it would be a must buy if so.
Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward
@get2sammyb oh yeah no doubt.
For me its just not neccessary at present.
Im leaning towards VR first too, so this will likely just take a backseat for now.
Re: Hands On: Quit Bitchin'! PS4 Pro Is a Big, Beautiful Step Forward
To be frank, Im not the least bit fussed.
The PS4 Pro isnt going to improve the story or actual gameplay, so I dont feel like its that important to pick one of these up just yet.
Of course when my current unit bricks Ill grab one and a new tele to get the updated stuff.
Re: November's Free PlayStation Plus Games Are Available Now
Nah, Im good this month.
Id like to see a few more titles like NBA on there tbh.
But it is what it is.
Ive stopped really caring what they offer on the whole, and as a result when theres a gem like Resident Evil on there Im pleasently surprised.
Re: Hello Games Tweets: 'No Man's Sky Was a Mistake'
@Neolit thats true to an extent.
I paid for the product based on what I was told to expect from it by those that created it.
Which is an informed decision based on information received at the time.
If that information is in fact falsified to ANY degree, I have still already purchased the product based on information I believed to be true.
It not being so is NOT my fault, and I should only shoulder the responsibility of believing said information.
Unless you are suggesting I should ignore all information ever given to me about a product?
My purchasing the game does not absolve those that misinformed me of any wrongdoing.
Re: Hello Games Tweets: 'No Man's Sky Was a Mistake'
@Ralizah exactly.
Re: PlayStation Plus October Includes Resident Evil and Transformers on PS4
I bought REmake on launch, and its a nice HD REfresh of the already fantastic GameCube REmake.
Transformers is out of left field but welcome.
