While both Joel and Ellie will reprise their roles for The Last of Us: Part II, you'll be playing as Ellie in the upcoming PlayStation 4 exclusive. Neil Druckmann, the writer and director of the game, confirmed as much during the game's PSX 2016 panel. Ellie was, of course, playable for parts of the original – but she'll be the primary protagonist this time out.
Druckmann also confirmed that Ellie is 19-years-old in this title, so it's set a few years after the first game. Apparently, where the original game was a love story, this will be more about hate, which was reflected by some of the dialogue in the trailer.

This is going to be amazing. My favorite part of the first game was playing as Ellie.
@Neolit Yeah, I felt much the same.
Well playing as a old man with as many injuries as Joel had would lack a certain amount of fluidity...
Maybe Joel is a delusion who will question and challenge Ellie throughout the game, like Dexter Morgan and his father.
That'd actually be really interesting.
The hardest part for them is going to keep it from feeling like the TR remakes. I know the first game didn't, but if this game is being promoted as a young woman running around in the wilderness trying to survive while she kills people, well that storyline sounds a little more similar. Trick will be to keep the same scary pace of the first and not let it turn into an action adventure game. Story first.
But, can't wait.
I really really liked The Last of Us. Never understood all the excitement over Uncharted- it's a good series and all, it just... it's the gameplay. The freaking gameplay. But The Last of Us? It worked perfectly. Their style of gameplay didn't work so well for an adventure traversal game but for survival horror it was immaculate. Puts Resident Evil to shame!
And I am most definitely excited for this. I imagine this is what most other people felt for Uncharted 4. This is my Uncharted 4 then.
@JaxonH To me it's Uncharted 4 all over again! Maybe even more than that though. I had mixed feelings at first, cause I was perfectly fine with TLOU being a standalone title, the story was told and there was no reason to go back. Once the trailer started and I heard the music, I was sold. Hope it turns out to be as good as the first one.
I want to play as Joel too
Im still reeling! Gonna be a long wait
@JaxonH Funny, I feel the exact opposite way. Uncharted 4 was fun for me for the worldbuilding and the constant sense of wonder, which made the gameplay appealing, linear as it is. Conversely, I couldn't finish TLOU, because for me the world felt drab and dull, and as such I felt no compelling reason to endure the endless stream of cover-based shooting segments. I guess it didn't help that zombies were already everywhere back when the game was released, and I'd always take Indiana Jones over zombies anyway.
I like the idea of playing Ellie she is gorwn up now in a new world and has the skills to not only survive but thrive. I am not only looking forward to the campaign but also the multi-player which for me is the best i have played out of any franchise I hope they keep the same feel and pace as they did in TLOU. I know the game is years away but I am so happy its real.
Im bummed out about this.
Ellies parts were the weakest of the first game.
I dont want her to become a "Joel" without any real context or back story.
Her just becoming a killing machine doesnt make much sense, in contrast to Joel who had 20 years of hardening and internal pain.
My other concern is them staying true to the general narrative of the first game, a brutal world theyve set up.
Joel is a physically able guy, strong and fit.
Yet he still struggles against a single opponent who almost kills him, save from Ellie shooting the person.
Now imagine Ellie in that same position but this time theres an absence of Joel.
If she can magically overpower someone as strong as the man who can overpower Joel, it wouldnt make much sense.
I can't wait. When can I buy it?
A big part of the first game is the bond you build with Ellie as Joel as well as how it fits in with who Joel is. I'm not so sure making Ellie the main player character is such a good move though and would have preferred to see a continuation of how life had changed for Joel and the repercussions of his decisions in the first game. They tried the switch in TWD season 2 and not many people talk about that game when compared to the first as it loses something when you are the character you've been trying to protect.
