I'll be laughing when the mythical Silksong failed to get the ROI they wanted like it did with Hollow Knight though
ROI? The game is made by a 4-man indie studio(at least it was 4 people during the first game). Also, since it sold 15m copies those guys are all millionaires many times over now I would assume. They’re making the game because it’s something they want to do, and profit is likely not a primary driver.
On the plus side these UE5 games are future-proofed pretty well. They will run amazing on the PS6 utilising all the overhead immediately and also benefit from future engine updates.
It's an article tangentially related to MS so obviously BAMmozzy is here to write a 5000 word essay on how MS is actually the best thing ever and this is the greatest game series in the world and MS is total boss for owning(buying) it.
(I didn't read a single word of his thesis so I'm just guessing it follows the same pattern as every novella on the subject he's ever written: anything owned by MS is great and will do great)
And yet Black Ops 7 will still be the #1 selling game of 2025.
In the USA, sure. In Europe I don’t believe it’s ever been the best selling game. In the last 5 years it only made the top 3 twice. In Asia it’s a non entity. CoD’s mega success is driven pretty much entirely by the USA.
I feel like a lot of people don't really understand the economics of bungie. They're not losing money, they just didn't hit sales targets.
Destiny 2 was a platinum game on steam in 2024(top 12 grossing games, including F2p). This was despite it losing a lot of players.
Destiny 2 makes more revenue each year than the entire studio costs to run. If Marathon sold 0 copies they'd still be making more revenue than spending during the year. The only problem in in a few years time when the well is completely dry. They need gummy bears or marathon to be at least a modest hit and then rely on Destiny 3 longterm.
93 on Metacritic and Push Square comment section will be filled with comments about how overrated it is by the 8 people in the world that didn’t like it.
@Americansamurai1 He got 49.8% of the vote unless the MSM is lying to me to hide how he had the greatest win in history, a beautiful win. People couldn't believe you could win by this much.
It's good for the Americans to have to start feeling the pain of some of their choices, it just sucks for the 50.2% that didn't vote for him(and the under 18's, ineligible to vote etc.)
@RiverGenie That wasn't a coincidence, they specifically chose that date, and i'b be inclined to believe the same thing happened here without any other evidence.
Don’t really get the story, this is how streaming content works.
Netflix covered the entire budget and paid Sony $20m to make it. Pretty normal deal. Make $20m with no risk.
Now that the film is successful it’s a story? It’s only successful as a Netflix film, it hasn’t actually generated any revenue directly yet. The alternative option for Sony is to self fund and release normally, with a budget of $100m it’s over $200m at the box office just to break even. Would anyone really be that confident in “K-Pop Demon Hunters” making significantly more than $200m? It’s very likely it doesn’t catch on nearly as well when it isn’t freely available to 150m households.
They’ll get big paychecks for developing the sequels.
She then points to how, in the last five years, Helldivers 2, MLB The Show, Gran Turismo 7, and Destiny 2 have all started to contribute "to sales and profit in a stable manner".
I think the Stable manner comment is very telling and something that a lot of commenters don’t really appreciate. In the days before live service games and subscription revenues the console business was very cyclical. At the start of a new gen Sony were actually posting significant losses and then working into profitability after a couple of years and then max profit in the mature console ecosystem, before repeating the cycle again.
@LifeGirl Currently on Steam the most played games today for Daily Active Users include Marvel Rivals(6th), Delta Force(13th) and Helldivers 2(17th as a non-F2P). Those all released in 2024.
The battlefield 6 open beta currently has 300k players and is the 4th highest game for current user count.
Currently the most wishlisted games on Steam that haven’t released include all of the following in the top 10: Deadlock, Light no fire, Arc Raiders, Arena Breakout: Infinite, Battlefield 6, Ark 2 and Borderlands 4.
That’s 70% of the top 10 being live service or live service adjacent games.
@nessisonett They also signed off on 6 of the 12 games that won the most GoTY awards over the last 12 years. Like, do you judge FromSoft as the company that made Dark souls or the company that made Steel Batalion: Heavy Armor*?
*Which scored a 6 in Games Master UK. It was out of 100 though.
@dodgykebaab shipped to retailer is when Sony is Paid, the money for all those units is already accounted for in these accounts.
Thats why they use this sold-in number, because it's the relevant accounting number. A machine being bought by a customer now was probably sold by Sony last quarter and would appear in those accounts.
I've played Marathon and it's very good. Most of the improvements they are working on all seem to be in the right direction. I think the game will work very well with the seasonal wipes keeping things fresh with new/revised maps and an ongoing storyline.
@dodgykebaab actually Sony have sold that amount, they receive payment from the retailers upon delivery. It's technically the "sell-in" number. Sell-through is sold to customers.
Something of note, the ¥148B Operating Income(profit) is, I believe, the largest of any quarter in the history of the division. This was a fairly random April-July quarter with nothing particularly of note occurring.
With lots of talk about big AAA games being too expensive and new revenue streams being required, it’s probably worth dwelling on this point a moment. The movement towards Digital and increasing revenues from Subscriptions and Add-on content is helping to facilitate record breaking profits.
@dskatter It actually has a very healthy playerbase(at least on Steam) where the player count has been increasing constantly since launch. At the weekend it peaked at 63k concurrent players on Steam.
The upside of the Marvel license for these kinds of games is that the library of characters and skins you can draw from is just absurdly huge. Not only are there dozens of iconic characters but most famous characters also have a ton of iconic outfits.
@Jrs1 you named games that cover like 30 years and still included turn based games(BG, clair Obscur) science fiction games(stellar Blade) and historical fantasy(Banishers, Nioh etc), high fantasy (elder scrolls, BG etc.) and games that are not even RPGs(Darksiders, Stellar Blade, Sekiro etc.).
Those games also cover an incredibly broad spectrum thematically and mechanically. Like, who thinks Baldurs gate is similar to stellar Blade?
For the current year you listed exactly one game, a turn based RPG. Is that your definition of over saturation? 10-15 might qualify, but not zero.
I think you just don't like soulslike games and wanted to go about saying that in an indirect fashion. Those are the only games with thematic and mechanical similarities across your list.
Yeah, I'm a bit disappointed with this. Need to see more but I was hoping for a Zelda-style campaign.
It should be noted their last game was Remnant II and that leaned heavily into exploration, secrets and puzzles. To the point it was probably better played solo to begin with, and subsequent playthroughs you could play more like a Diablo style game when you knew pretty much all the areas.
