Much has been made of Assassin's Creed Shadows' commercial performance — mainly because Ubisoft has been reluctant to share actual sales numbers — but we know one thing for sure: the title's been a major hit in Europe.
Often overlooked in a media industry that's very US-centric, Europe remains a colossal video game market. Its commercial trends usually mirror those of North America, but performing well across Europe can seriously bolster your profitability — just ask Sony and PlayStation.
Anyway, based on new sales info shared by GSD — Europe's official charts company that tracks both physical and digital data — Shadows is currently the best-selling new release of 2025 (thanks, The Game Business).
We say new release because EA Sports FC 25 has actually sold better this year, but the footy sim obviously launched last year. Basically, you're never beating football in Europe — and we'd bet on FC 26 knocking Assassin's Creed off its perch when it launches next month.
Still, Shadows has so far fended off heavy hitters like Mario Kart World and Monster Hunter Wilds, both of which have made the top 20.
Speaking of which, Split Fiction has done incredibly well for itself, settling in sixth place.
Here's the full top 20 for 2025 so far, according to GSD:
- EA Sports FC 25 (EA)
- Assassin’s Creed Shadows (Ubisoft)
- Grand Theft Auto 5 (Rockstar)
- Red Dead Redemption 2 (Rockstar)
- Hogwarts Legacy (Warner Bros)
- Split Fiction (EA)
- Monster Hunter Wilds (Capcom)
- Call of Duty: Black Ops 6 (Activision Blizzard)
- Mario Kart World (Nintendo)*
- Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2 (Plaion)
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered (Bethesda)
- Star Wars Battlefront 2 (EA)
- Elden Ring: Nightreign (Bandai Namco)
- It Takes Two (EA)
- Grand Theft Auto Online (Rockstar)
- NBA 2K25 (2K Games)
- F1 25 (EA)
- Tom Clancy’s Rainbow Six: Siege (Ubisoft)
- Mario Kart 8: Deluxe (Nintendo)*
- Battlefield 1 (EA)
*Digital sales not included
Having perused that list, you may be wondering where Game of the Year frontrunner Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is. Well, according to the report, publisher Kepler Interactive doesn't actually share its data with GSD — which is a bit of a shame.
