Bungie Boss Pete Parsons Departs as Sony Starts to Take Control of Flagging Dev 1

Bungie boss Pete Parsons is out as the embattled developer continues to go through a significant shake-up.

Sony recently said that it’ll be taking more control of the Marathon maker and will be integrating the studio under its PS Studios umbrella.

After its acquisition, Bungie was granted autonomy separate from PlayStation’s other first-party studios, but flagging Destiny sales and the delay of Marathon has seen Sony step in to try and fix the mess it’s invested over $3 billion into.

Parsons took the CEO role in 2016 and has presided over Bungie’s most tumultuous period, to put it politely. He’s also been accused of various alleged scandals, and is subsequently not in particularly positive favour with the studio’s community.

In a departing message, he said:

“After more than two decades of helping build this incredible studio, establishing the Bungie Foundation, and growing inspiring communities around our work, I have decided to pass the torch. This journey has been the honour of a lifetime. I am deeply proud of the worlds we’ve built together and the millions of players who call them home – and most of all I am privileged by the opportunity to work alongside the incredible minds at Bungie.”

Justin Truman, the former Chief Development Officer, will take on the role of the new CEO at Bungie – and he’s got a tough job ahead of him, following Marathon’s recent delay and art plagiarism scandal.

In an introductory message, he wrote:

“When we’re at our best – we create those worlds alongside you, our player community, and build something that matters. Something that’s worth your time, your passion, and your investment in us. Something that I’ve learned, hopefully, overdelivers. I’ve also been part of these efforts at Bungie when we’ve maybe not been at our best. When we’ve stumbled and realised through listening to our community that we had missed the mark. I know I’ve personally learned a lot over the years, as have all of us here, from those conversations.”

Good luck, Justin – you’re gonna need it!
