I was curious about how Sony refers to Bungie as a publisher despite the acquisition. My thoughts are that Sony knows that anything they would generally buy need to be exclusive. They might use Bungie to acquire studios for their live action potential and keep them multi platform under the Bungie brand. I.e. Deviation.
Deviation is newly formed from former Call of duty devs, so they have a pre-existing relationship with Sony. Upon opening their new studio, without even announcing an IP, Sony signed them to a publishing deal. They've recently expanded with a new studio in Canada. How do they have the money? They have been acquired, the paper work won't be finalized until their game is released.
That's my running theory. Let me know what y'all think.
Sony obviously over paid, but who actually gets an acquisition at cost? There is a level of Goodwill that goes into purchases to help incentivize shareholders to part with their shares. Although they weren't publically trading, the same rule applies for Bungie. Bungie was worth about 2-2.5 billion pre-acquisition. Using the Activision acquisition as a comparison, Microsoft paid 40% (approx over the valuation of the time) in the buyout. If that were the case, 2-2.5 billion x40% markup = 2.8 - 3.5 billion dollars.
This lines up with roughly the purchase price Sony paid for Bungie.
The main takeaway of this acquisition for Sony is three part from what I read surrounding this deal: 1) consistent revenue stream : Bungie makes 200-250 million in profits year over year. If nothing else changes, Sony will have made their money back in about 15 years. 2) Bungie are a leader in the FPS and live gaming markets. SIE first party studios gain quite a bit of intrinsic value from the knowledge they bring to the community. Especially if the rumoured second studio of Guerrilla is believed to be making a Multiplayer game (possibly Killzone), they'd gain immense value, improving on the Lore and feel of the gun/shooting mechanics. 3) Bungie apparently was working on some next generation technology, Sony was reportedly impressed by whatever it is, that Bungie was working on. My two cents say that this has something to do with VR technology, and Sony wants to really nail the PSVR2 this coming year. Whatever this tech is, Sony is looking to future proof themselves moving forward.
All this to say, the value is more than meets the eye. I am glad they are remaining a multi-platform studio, but I can see why Sony was so interested in them, especially with these uncertain times, full of huge acquisitions. Better to lock down some talent under your studio's umbrella whenever possible.
It's kinda sad we as game consumers have gone from being shocked at seeing a studio acquisition to being mad when we don't see favorable studios and franchises being bought. Sign of the times I suppose. I'll get used to it over time.
I think Bungie was inevitable after China prevented Sony from acquiring Leyou. It sounded like Sony really wanted Warframe to capitalize on the f2p space. Now they get their chance, with Destiny.
@OmegaStriver actually it's the opposite. Sony isn't moving new games into PC, they are moving their best hits after several years to PC. Traditional PC gamers are the target audience to expand PlayStation. I saw several reviews on Steam, where people tried GOW for the first time, loved it, and wanted a PS5 solely to play the sequel... Sounds like good marketing to me.
This is purely an investment and we shouldn't look at it as part of the SIE. On the Brightside, even if Call of duty becomes a console exclusive, this won't be.
It's basically what Microsoft spent on Minecraft, and left Minecraft to be a mostly independent third party game. So I have similar expectations for Bungie.
The market is starting to consolidate with Microsoft and Tencent at the helm. Sony can't afford big players, but if they wanted to they could easily get Capcom or Square. The question is would they? Or will they wait for Microsoft and Tencent to swallow up more studios first?
A side note, THQ Nordic has been eating small studios for a while now as well.
Gamepass can only work on PlayStation if they make a version that only includes first party games only.
If it includes third party titles PS Now loses all value. If Microsoft works with Sony and provides a modified GamePass like that, I am sure they can approve it to show up on the console. Because at that point it's no different than EA as a third party publisher.
They own CALL OF DUTY! I am not even a fan and I know that's messed up! It's literally the biggest FPS series on the market. Can't believe it's exclusive to Microsoft now...
On a side note: they own Blizzard entertainment as well now. This is massive in the PC verse. Like... insanely crazy. I'm in shock...
I wish they were doing a Resistance game. I would want that, and a new Kill Zone game for this generation. I feel people don't give Killzone the respect it deserved as a FPS Franchise, great mechanics and the online to me was second to none in its heyday (2&3).
I am scared, soon there won't be any independent studios. And we will have to buy individual consoles for each major studio. I already hate this for streaming platforms, can't imagine gaming... ☠️
I hate that the industry is getting more narrow. I miss when there were more independent studios. I suppose it was inevitable with the cost of development skyrocketing...
PS Vita is hands down my favourite console all time from Sony. I hope one day, handhelds become viable for Sony again, and we can see a PS Vita 2. A guy can hope....
When I finish building my gaming PC, I'll get this game. I don't expect it to be good but it will help kill time. I think I should give oblivion and Skyrim a break haha
@theheadofabroom Thanks a bunch for the information. I am going to start to piece it together over the next few paychecks. Hopefully I can get it up and running sooner rather than later. I'll have to look for locals deals to help with pricing.
I am looking to build a gaming budget PC if anyone has tips for parts. I want to enjoy Bethesda titles that are likely not going to be multi Plat anymore.
The Vita is a legend among niche fans like us. The broader audience that only play sports and shooters won't really appreciate it as much unfortunately. And neither will Sony
Even if dbrand could win this case, Sony can outlast them in court. Lots of major companies draw out cases for this kind of reason. Pretty moronic to goad a multi billion dollar company lol.
@eltomo I am in the opposite mindset. It's story gets a lot of hate because people wanted a different story told than the one given. The game play and job system however was fantastic and don't get the love they deserve.
Controversial opinion: FFX-2 Was actually a very good game. People don't like it, because it wasn't the sequel they were expecting from Final Fantasy X. I'll die on that hill.
Considering how successful Apple storefront is, if he even helps a little, Sony should see pretty good returns. I'm not a fan of the smartphone games market, but good luck to Sony!
But I mean, what exactly are they going to remaster? Are they going to make it run smoother? I'd rather a remake of these titles with the original sound track.
It took me a long time to get used to the turn based mechanism in Like A Dragon, and by the time it did. It just became so easy.the last arc of the game was mostly just grinding but most fights were easy outside of the last dungeon...

Re: Microsoft Says Call of Duty and Activision Games Will Keep Releasing on PlayStation Beyond Current Deals
I'm not surprised, they made bank in call of duty every year. If anything, Microsoft would have lost more to restrict it.
The other franchises will likely be exclusive. Maybe, Diabolo will be multi plat, that's it imho...
