Re: Poll: Does the Steam Machine Pose a Threat to PS5?

JJtheTexan

Others have said this, but an apt comparison is the Steam Deck vs. the Nintendo Switch. The Deck is much more powerful and capable, yet the Switch outsold it by nearly 150 million units. That's not competition; that's a niche product versus a mainstream one.

I think Steam Machine 2.0 looks like a great product, and I am sure Valve will sell a few million of them. But the vast, vast majority of PC gamers want to play on a PC, and console gamers already have great options. I will be shocked if Steam Machine hits even 5 percent of PS5 total sales lifetime.

Re: Poll: Do You Play Horror Games Around Halloween?

JJtheTexan

I play through a few Castlevania games every October. Not a horror series per se, I guess, but it always fits the season perfectly. I was very sick for the first few weeks of the month this year, so I only had time for one, Harmony of Dissonance. I liked it a lot!

Re: Talking Point: Is PS5 Really in Competition with TikTok?

JJtheTexan

Readers of this website are not the ones for whom PlayStation is losing market share to TikTok.

Younger people, ages 25 and under, are not growing up with video games in the same way we did. For many of them, "video games" just means Fortnite or Roblox, and little else.

Microsoft is correct in its assessment that short-form video is an existential threat. Gen-Xers like me and Millennials are not going to be around forever. It's becoming very difficult to convince consumers of all ages and income levels that their spare time is best spent on $80 games instead of free, addictive videos of kids throwing water bottles while an AI-generated voice shouts "SIX SEVEN SKIBIDI TOILET" or whatever TikTok is all about these days.

Re: PlayStation Is Trying to Scrub Any Mention of Its Failed Concerts from the Internet

JJtheTexan

I think, when you ask most hardcore gaming fans to name their favorite soundtracks, you get names like Zelda, Mega Man, Street Fighter, Castlevania, Super Mario, Final Fantasy, etc. Very few PlayStation-exclusive games or franchises come to mind. PlayStation-only music is kind of a tough sell for a concert experience, ya know?

Honestly the only PlayStation-owned game soundtrack I listen to regularly is Astro Bot.

Re: 'Genesis Does What Nintendon't': Sonic Racing Takes Shots at Mario Kart World

Nintendo lifer here - I was a teenager when the original "WELCOME TO THE NEXT LEVEL" campaign was on TV and I distinctly remember the "slow Super Mario World vs. Sonic the Hedgehog with BLAST PROCESSING" ads.

I think this is hilarious and great, and I wish more video game companies did stuff like this.

The Mario Kart team needs some real competition! I hope CrossWorlds is great and sells well on all platforms. Perhaps it will inspire Nintendo to make its legendary series even better.

Re: The Witcher 3 Turns 10 This Month, CD Projekt Red Wants to 'Celebrate Together'

Weirdly enough, I played TW3 for the first time on Nintendo Switch. I didn't have a PS4 at the time. I loved it, in spite of the muddy visuals on that platform.

It was the first game I downloaded when I finally bought a PS5, and I immediately played through the entire campaign in about two weeks. It was even better the second time around.

Absolutely one of the greatest and best games of all time. I can't wait to see what's coming in TW4!

Re: Metal Wolf Chaos XD - Former Xbox Exclusive Brings Its Bonkers Plot to PS4

JJtheTexan

I played this for the first time in 2025, which is fitting since the game takes place in 2025, a time of economic upheval and a crazy person in the White House. Imagine that! Anyway, as much as I want to love this game, it's pretty repetitive and even a little boring at times. It finally lost me when I failed on the boss fight at the end of a mission... and I had to start the entire mission over from the very beginning. No checkpoints? I don't want to waste my time. Bleah

Re: PS5 Suddenly a Hot Product in Japan, But as a Rental

JJtheTexan

I remember when you could rent consoles from home video stores when I was a kid. I don't recall seeing the Neo Geo AES as a rental, but I've read SNK originally intended it as a rental-only product. They eventually made it available for purchase due to high demand.

Re: Random: You've Been Pronouncing Balatro Wrong (Probably)

JJtheTexan

@Lanmanna I was half-joking there, but serious answers:

Gradius = I always thought it was "GRAH-dee-us", but the Nintendo Direct announcer today pronounced it "GRAY-dee-us."

Darius = Most people say "DARE-ee-us" but game history researcher and author Jeremy Parrish says it's supposed to be "dah-RYE-us" as per the original Japanese. The name comes from a historic Persian Empire ruler so idk

Gaiden = I think it's supposed to be "GUY-den" but I have heard many say it as "GAY-den."

Of course most British people's pronunciation of "Mario" and "Yoshi" sounds wrong to me too. lol

Re: Epic Will Gladly Commit Billions to Fortnite's Continued Dominance

JJtheTexan

If I understand this correctly, Epic wants to launch its own competing app store on iOS and Android systems, which Apple / Google ostensibly would be required to allow in order to avoid anti-monopoly laws, and Epic is betting it can lure publishers away from the major stores by offering a better deal.

Epic Game Store hasn't done much to challenge Steam's supremacy on PC as far as I know. It might be a different story on mobile, but consumer habits die hard.
