id has done a terrific job of keeping pretty much the entire DOOM catalogue in circulation. I suppose I'd like to see a new Quake game, and updated ports of the Quake titles that haven't made it to modern platforms yet.
The Steam user reviews are enlightening. Currently "Mostly Negative" at 22,000+ reviews will be very difficult to overcome. This review seems to sum up the general attitude:
"There's not one thing this game does that other games already don't do better. TF2, Deadlock, Counter-Strike, Marvel Rivals, Fortnite, Rainbow Six Siege... Apex itself. It's the Everything Game and not in a good way"
Game development takes a long time. Wildlight started on Highguard in 2022. Since then, we've been flooded with PvP hero shooters and games in adjacent genres. The market is oversaturated. My guess is the developers were chasing a trend in 2022 that did not age well.
A new game really needs new ideas to stand out. "Overwatch but you can ride a horse" isn't going to cut it.
@belmont it's pretty well-known as a low- to mid-tier TV brand in the USA. I don't know if they market their TVs elsewhere or if they use other names in other regions.
I just played Winter Wonder yesterday, and it really is a treat! I only wish the music was a bit longer before it looped. Otherwise, a terrific reason to fire up Astro Bot again.
Five years ago, I would have said new PS4 games in 2027 would be absurd.
Now, I think the overachievement of the Nintendo Switch has incentivized publishers to make lower-spec versions of many big titles. If they're making ports for the NS2, might as well port to the PS4 as well. Not a perfect 1:1 comparison obviously, but close enough in terms of capability, it seems.
Worth mentioning Street Fighter II: The World Warrior sold 6.3 million copies on the SNES... and remained Capcom's best-selling title on any platform for the next 20 years!
Others have said this, but an apt comparison is the Steam Deck vs. the Nintendo Switch. The Deck is much more powerful and capable, yet the Switch outsold it by nearly 150 million units. That's not competition; that's a niche product versus a mainstream one.
I think Steam Machine 2.0 looks like a great product, and I am sure Valve will sell a few million of them. But the vast, vast majority of PC gamers want to play on a PC, and console gamers already have great options. I will be shocked if Steam Machine hits even 5 percent of PS5 total sales lifetime.
I play through a few Castlevania games every October. Not a horror series per se, I guess, but it always fits the season perfectly. I was very sick for the first few weeks of the month this year, so I only had time for one, Harmony of Dissonance. I liked it a lot!
Readers of this website are not the ones for whom PlayStation is losing market share to TikTok.
Younger people, ages 25 and under, are not growing up with video games in the same way we did. For many of them, "video games" just means Fortnite or Roblox, and little else.
Microsoft is correct in its assessment that short-form video is an existential threat. Gen-Xers like me and Millennials are not going to be around forever. It's becoming very difficult to convince consumers of all ages and income levels that their spare time is best spent on $80 games instead of free, addictive videos of kids throwing water bottles while an AI-generated voice shouts "SIX SEVEN SKIBIDI TOILET" or whatever TikTok is all about these days.
If someone's financial situation is such that they can't afford to run PS5 games at "full power," they probably can't afford to own / use a PS5 at all, sadly.
@Rich33 I figured it was something like that. We're talking savings of less than a few dollars / euro / pounds / yen on a monthly bill, and that's assuming you play your PS5 a LOT.
I think, when you ask most hardcore gaming fans to name their favorite soundtracks, you get names like Zelda, Mega Man, Street Fighter, Castlevania, Super Mario, Final Fantasy, etc. Very few PlayStation-exclusive games or franchises come to mind. PlayStation-only music is kind of a tough sell for a concert experience, ya know?
Honestly the only PlayStation-owned game soundtrack I listen to regularly is Astro Bot.
Nintendo lifer here - I was a teenager when the original "WELCOME TO THE NEXT LEVEL" campaign was on TV and I distinctly remember the "slow Super Mario World vs. Sonic the Hedgehog with BLAST PROCESSING" ads.
I think this is hilarious and great, and I wish more video game companies did stuff like this.
The Mario Kart team needs some real competition! I hope CrossWorlds is great and sells well on all platforms. Perhaps it will inspire Nintendo to make its legendary series even better.
The original Hades was one of my favorite Nintendo Switch experiences. The years-long delay to PS4/5 was baffling. Hopefully it will only be a few months this time. I'll be playing it on NS2 Day One for sure, but (potentially) great games like this deserve to be available to everyone as soon as possible.
Thank you for this. With all due respect to the developers and true Bubsy sickos out there (looking at you, Audi Sorlie), these games were never good and are not worth replaying today.
Ace Combat 7 is one of my favorite games of the last generation. If you don't already have it, don't miss this sale! It's a bargain at twice the price!
Today I learned CTR is 30fps on PlayStation. I have it on my Nintendo Switch, and I was disappointed by the 30fps but figured it was a Switch thing. It's baffling to me that even PS4 can't run it at 60fps.
It's up to $3,000 USD as I write this. At least something good came out of the game's failure! (For those unaware, Goodwill provides jobs, training, and other assistance for people with disabilities, returning from incarceration, and other challenges.)
Does the PS4 version not have the same aspect ratio issues as the Nintendo Switch release? Nintendo Life's reviewer griped that the 16:9 option just zoomed in the original 4:3 and cut off the top and bottom of the viewing area, and they ended up playing it in 4:3.
Weirdly enough, I played TW3 for the first time on Nintendo Switch. I didn't have a PS4 at the time. I loved it, in spite of the muddy visuals on that platform.
It was the first game I downloaded when I finally bought a PS5, and I immediately played through the entire campaign in about two weeks. It was even better the second time around.
Absolutely one of the greatest and best games of all time. I can't wait to see what's coming in TW4!
I played this for the first time in 2025, which is fitting since the game takes place in 2025, a time of economic upheval and a crazy person in the White House. Imagine that! Anyway, as much as I want to love this game, it's pretty repetitive and even a little boring at times. It finally lost me when I failed on the boss fight at the end of a mission... and I had to start the entire mission over from the very beginning. No checkpoints? I don't want to waste my time. Bleah
I remember when you could rent consoles from home video stores when I was a kid. I don't recall seeing the Neo Geo AES as a rental, but I've read SNK originally intended it as a rental-only product. They eventually made it available for purchase due to high demand.
I feel bad for the developers. I hope they are all discreetly saving as much of their work as possible, because they are all going to be "downsized" about a week after this game either comes out and flops or gets canceled without ever seeing the light of day.
@Lanmanna I was half-joking there, but serious answers:
Gradius = I always thought it was "GRAH-dee-us", but the Nintendo Direct announcer today pronounced it "GRAY-dee-us."
Darius = Most people say "DARE-ee-us" but game history researcher and author Jeremy Parrish says it's supposed to be "dah-RYE-us" as per the original Japanese. The name comes from a historic Persian Empire ruler so idk
Gaiden = I think it's supposed to be "GUY-den" but I have heard many say it as "GAY-den."
Of course most British people's pronunciation of "Mario" and "Yoshi" sounds wrong to me too. lol

Can AI build a complete, functioning video game on its own? Yes, almost certainly now, and definitely within just a few years if not now.
Can AI make a good game that will sell really well and earn critical acclaim? Doubtful.
Will I ever buy / play an AI-generated game? Not a chance.

Only for watching Blu-ray Disc movies, which my girlfriend collects in much the same way I collect games on disc.
I can't imagine using my PS5 as the daily driver for streaming apps, though. Too slow to turn on, and the DualSense is not ideal for that purpose.
