It feels like Hellraiser: Revival is bubbling under the radar a little bit, and I’m not exactly sure why that is.
I played the game for over an hour last year and was drawn in by its tense atmosphere and strong violence. This is a title that pushes so close to the edge of what age ratings will allow I think it could cause some real controversies.
It’s telling that the title’s latest trailer, which focuses on the Genesis Configuration, has been censored on Sony’s YouTube channel. VHS blurring effects have been added to obscure much of the violence, which you can see unedited on the game’s official website if you so desire.

The video itself focuses on the Genesis Configuration, which Clive Barker fans will recognise as a twist on the Lament Configuration from the original novels and movies.
Unlike the source material, this puzzle box has a combative edge, and allows the protagonist to turn the tables on his sadistic adversaries using a wide range of combative superpowers.
The press release reveals:
“Banish your enemies with gruesome executions to gather their Suffering and unleash a variety of abilities with the Genesis Configuration. Use Telekinesis to launch saw blades, rail spikes and more at enemies to maim and dismember them. Wield Pyrokinesis to absorb incandescent fire to burn away foes and the environment. And summon forth the iconic Hell Chains to tear your opponents apart without mercy.”
The gameplay reminds me a little bit of BioShock, where you wield the Genesis Configuration in one hand and a traditional weapon in the other.
I didn’t get to test out any of these superpowers in my demo last year, but I did enjoy the traditional stealth gameplay, and had fun using the title’s traditional arsenal to pick off a couple of depraved aggressors.
I think this game is shaping up really nicely, so I hope it’s going to get the attention it deserves when it launches later this year.
There’s still no official release date attached, but I’d expect it to come out before Halloween.
