In a poll I published about PS6 late last month, almost 60% of you said you didn’t want it until at least 2029. In fact, an incredible 12% of you said Sony should wait until 2031 or later – five years from now!
I’d be interested to run a similar poll in the aftermath of Project Helix’s announcement, which was confirmed by incoming Xbox CEO Asha Sharma on social media overnight. Just 11% of our readers said they want the PS6 in 2027; I suspect many would have the opposite opinion of Microsoft’s new machine, and argue they want it ASAP.
It’s a fascinating contradiction that I’m struggling to wrap my head around.
Xbox feels like it’s been in free fall for several years now, and it’s registered year-on-year hardware declines for quite some time. It’s reached a point where its hardware sales must truly be in the toilet.
PS5, meanwhile, is a successful system – a console that edged out Nintendo’s all-new Switch 2 in the US throughout January of this year. We know games like Resident Evil Requiem are posting huge sales numbers on the system.
So, why the enthusiasm for new hardware from Microsoft and not from Sony? Why has Project Helix’s announcement been generally met with positivity, while rumours about a potential delay to the PS6 went viral, as fans celebrated the proposed wait?
I suppose one theory is that Microsoft is, once again, looking for a reset.
This isn’t new: the Xbox Series X|S was similarly anticipated as it marked an end to the tough Xbox One era. Everyone enjoys a comeback story, even if this one does cast a trillion dollar tech titan as its protagonist.
There’s also the PS5 Pro I suppose, which is enjoying something of renaissance right now. Sony is just on the cusp of rolling out PSSR 2, which looks like it’s going to be a game changer for software performance. Resident Evil Requiem is “head and shoulders” above all other consoles on the supercharged system, which we suppose makes the idea of new hardware less essential.
Microsoft, it seems, is on the cusp of a full blowout of Project Helix, as it wrestles for relevancy under a new leadership team. It’s repeatedly said that it wants to bring back a focus on the console, but it’s unclear what that actually means as it primes tentpole titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable for the PS5.

I’m curious if any of this is going to have an impact on how Sony communicates about the PS5.
As I alluded to earlier, there’s been some debate about whether the company may delay its next-gen console, but other reports claim it’ll be ready for release in 2027.
As far as I can see, there’s no real incentive for the firm to talk about what it’s got cooking right now. Marvel’s Wolverine and GTA 6 are going to ensure a huge 2026 for its current console, and by all accounts it’s got a new God of War game and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet locked for the next year.
Those four games alone will sustain PS5’s momentum into the next year and beyond.
But if Microsoft’s going to attempt to force the next-gen agenda, I am curious if it will draw Sony out into the open. Even if it’s dished out a pasting this gen, I do think the PlayStation maker will still be wary of its wily old Redmond rival.
I personally think we will still see the PS6 late next year, unless the RAM issues get so bad that it just becomes impossible to put it out at a feasible price. I’m expecting console generations to feel more like smartphones anyway, so I’d expect most of the system’s software to be shared with the PS5.

Whether that’s enough to stimulate consumer enthusiasm, I’m not sure. But if Sony can’t generate interest in the PS6, then I’m very sceptical of Project Helix’s ability to have any kind of meaningful impact on the market.
Microsoft’s biggest issue will be finding a business model that works, which satisfies its reportedly lofty profit targets.
The organisation will espouse magic maths, as it so often does, but there’s no value in a loss leading piece of hardware if one of its selling points is bypassing Microsoft’s own store and services in favour of third-party options operated by the likes of Valve.
The only conclusion I can come to here is that, even ignoring the ongoing RAM drama, we’re looking at an Xbox “console” that’s potentially double or even triple the price of the PS6. Is that really a threat?
The Microsoft upper-brass is going to talk and talk and talk, that much already seems evident under new executive Asha Sharma.
I’m really curious to see how much Sony pays attention, and whether it coaxes the company to come out and talk more freely about the PS6.
I guess we’re going to find out over the coming months.
What do you think the abrupt announcement of Xbox Helix means for PS6? Will it have any impact at all on Sony’s plans? Do you think it will influence the decisions PlayStation makes about its next-gen hardware? Let us know below.

Why would Sony, in a relatively comfortable position, feel compelled to respond to an absolute desperation move by an erstwhile competitor? Sony is above that and can take its time making its next console great, while carefully considering market conditions and the possibility RAM and CPU / GPU prices may dictate when the next platform releases.
Microsoft is trying to divert attention from the fact it appointed an AI exec who never picked up a controller to run its gaming division.
Why would ya, xbox is desperate and announced their system early to reassure shareholders and fans. But in reality sony is out-selling xbox 4 to 1, they can announce the ps6 6 months from launch and take the wind out of Microsofts sails. I doubt they will change their strategy one bit
Churning out the click bait articles to get comments lately. It’s working though. So sure. 4 big games in two years is pretty sad tbh.
Well-written piece. Still really interested in where this is heading, as either an outside observer or a potential buyer.
I don't think so. New Xbox is just a PC and it would be priced higher than consoles, even ignoring high RAM and SSD price. If 1$ gamepass deal didn't make a dent, then I don't think new console will change the fortune.
Voted No, Helix will not change anything for one logical reason.
People within Sony would have either already been privy to this Helix news long before the general public, or they would have made educated guesses and internal predictions regarding the same subject. In other words, the reality of Project Helix would preemptively have been factored in to whatever Sony’s plans are. That won’t change now just because we the people learned something Sony already knew in advance. Any upcoming PS6 announcements will, to paraphrase the late great Emperor Palpatine, be proceeding exactly as they have foreseen it.
Nah. I'm extremely interested in Helix, and there's a high chance I'll buy it. With that said, Sony can continue doing whatever the f*** they want and likely continue dominating the high-end console space.
Unless Sony absolutely shoots themselves in the foot somehow (like spreading themselves too thin trying to compete directly with the Switch), I doubt Helix or the Steam Machine can do much to disrupt the PS5's status as the go to console.
Sony should just take their time with the PS6 and only talk about it when they are good and ready.
I just don't see a situation where anyone can release next gen hardware at a competitive price for at least two years.
I still think Sony should focus on their handheld first then release PS6 around late 2028 at the earliest.
@HRdepartment "4 big games in two years is pretty sad tbh." That cadence isn't much different then the PS4 era really.
I don't believe Sony thinks Xbox starting the next gen 1 year earlier will do much damage this time, unlike 7th generation. So yeah, I am expecting Fall 2028 at the earliest.
And like you said, Fantastic Four: Wolverine, GTAVI, GoW spin-off and Intergalactic will keep the brand alive with other 3rd part goodness and especially with Pro&PSSR2. No need for PS6 for a while now.
I don't think Sony care to be honest. The PS6 could launch 3 years after the PCXbox and it will still beat its lifetime sales in less then a year.
Sony isn’t gonna rush out the ps6 for a pc with a Xbox logo on it that cost $1500.
I believe you’re looking too deep into it. Micro$oft (well, Xbox) as you said is free falling, they’ve been spitballing ideas and hoping something sticks for what seems like a decade. $ony, on the other hand, has no anxiety or urgency because the PS5 is giving them the best back rub of their life. PS5s are just flying off shelves left and right.
This is the best era for $ony because of third party live service games and microtransactions; the ps5 is a fortnite, COD, Madden machine for tens of millions.
Also because of live service and digital, Xbox former head admitted that they lost the worst generation because of digital data, games, and progress tied to accounts which is pretty ******* major
The PS5 generation would've had Returnal and Yotei then..
I don't think so. If PS6 is releasing in 2027, they'd be sharing news in Spring 2026 anyway to inform their investors about the next fiscal year like what they did about PS5 news in April 2019.

If PS6 isn't releasing in 2027, I don't see Sony saying anything to be honest. Just keeping up the PS5 focus and taking advantage of that Wolverine + GTA6 combo.
I think you have hit the nail on the head with Helix's price - its just going to be far too expensive to compete mass market, and also will come with a multitude of PC inherent drawbacks.
The main competition for the PS6 is going to be the PS5/Pro - if the PS6 does not seriously impress with it's hardware and software, a lot of people wont upgrade, particularly at the price point we all (should) know is coming (c £700 Digital).
Sony need to get the PS6 launch RIGHT, not rush out in response to Xbox.
Showing PS6 right now will be a bad idea for PS5 sales, especially if PS6 will have BC for PS5 games.
And so far there's only a tweet about Helix existence without the specs or even price. So i don't see why Sony should quickly respond to that by showing PS6?
Sony shouldn't really be worried about the next Xbox, especially if their machine gets quite expensive (which apparently will). I know I won't be getting their next box, I'll go full PS next gen again, and even if they put PS6 out in 2027, I'll probably buy one in 2029 (gotta wait the first few batches of hardware because a lot of times they're not 100% decent)
Sony are in too much of a commanding position, the don’t need to say a thing. Like Phil Spencer said, the Generation that Xbox needed to win was a couple back now and most gamers are set on the platform that they have invested heavily in as far as gaming library’s go. I couldn’t see anyone that has bought into PlayStation changing now so they won’t be bothered by a new Xbox console, especially on costing $1000 plus.
@get2sammyb These are all genuine questions and not intended (nor Super Nintended) to cause an argument.
Do you believe that Xbox will release a console that costs over £1000/$1000?
Do you believe that Sony will release a much less powerful piece of hardware to cut costs?
Do you believe that Microsoft will allow free access to any PC store and therefore negate any revenue?
How long do you believe Sony will want to make PlayStation hardware?
👍
No, it’s nonsense for every angle, in fact I’d say most people with a PS5 right now the least they want to hear is “the PS6 is coming”.
Microsoft situation is a whole different story, if they weren’t announcing something about their next platform most would just assume there isn’t going to be one, still even with them constantly talking many of us still doubt it’ll actually launch as it’s at least one year and a half away and it could be killed after any quarterly meeting.
My prediction/hopium:
2027 > Sony handheld and Helix release (maybe delayed to 2028)
2028 > PS6 release
Next gen Xbox - $1099-1599
PS6 - $799-$999, perhaps with a cheaper base model going for $599-799
Ram crisis messed things up so bad its almost impossible to even guess these prices
I haven't personally seen much positivity related to Helix, but I know Xbox fans are probably pretty desperate rn.
Frankly after seeing what the Pro can do with Resident Evil Requiem, I don’t think we need it quite yet. Happy to hold out with it for a couple more years. Those that stuck with the base console probably won’t feel the same and would rather get a full gen upgrade, but really, that game really impressed me all the way. Just started my second run today.
@HammerKirby3 nobody care about project helix really besides the die hard Xbox fans. Sony has nothing to worry about they can take their sweet time with the ps6 and get the most of the current ps5.
I put "maybe" because I think Sony might communicate why the PS6 is getting delayed if it's getting delayed, which technically counts as talking about the PS6.
The Helix announcement was just chucked out to bolster the new CEO. This wasn't a strategic announcement or a change in the status quo of what Xbox are doing
