In a poll I published about PS6 late last month, almost 60% of you said you didn’t want it until at least 2029. In fact, an incredible 12% of you said Sony should wait until 2031 or later – five years from now!
I’d be interested to run a similar poll in the aftermath of Project Helix’s announcement, which was confirmed by incoming Xbox CEO Asha Sharma on social media overnight. Just 11% of our readers said they want the PS6 in 2027; I suspect many would have the opposite opinion of Microsoft’s new machine, and argue they want it ASAP.
It’s a fascinating contradiction that I’m struggling to wrap my head around.
Xbox feels like it’s been in free fall for several years now, and it’s registered year-on-year hardware declines for quite some time. It’s reached a point where its hardware sales must truly be in the toilet.
PS5, meanwhile, is a successful system – a console that edged out Nintendo’s all-new Switch 2 in the US throughout January of this year. We know games like Resident Evil Requiem are posting huge sales numbers on the system.
So, why the enthusiasm for new hardware from Microsoft and not from Sony? Why has Project Helix’s announcement been generally met with positivity, while rumours about a potential delay to the PS6 went viral, as fans celebrated the proposed wait?
I suppose one theory is that Microsoft is, once again, looking for a reset.
This isn’t new: the Xbox Series X|S was similarly anticipated as it marked an end to the tough Xbox One era. Everyone enjoys a comeback story, even if this one does cast a trillion dollar tech titan as its protagonist.
There’s also the PS5 Pro I suppose, which is enjoying something of renaissance right now. Sony is just on the cusp of rolling out PSSR 2, which looks like it’s going to be a game changer for software performance. Resident Evil Requiem is “head and shoulders” above all other consoles on the supercharged system, which we suppose makes the idea of new hardware less essential.
Microsoft, it seems, is on the cusp of a full blowout of Project Helix, as it wrestles for relevancy under a new leadership team. It’s repeatedly said that it wants to bring back a focus on the console, but it’s unclear what that actually means as it primes tentpole titles like Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable for the PS5.

I’m curious if any of this is going to have an impact on how Sony communicates about the PS5.
As I alluded to earlier, there’s been some debate about whether the company may delay its next-gen console, but other reports claim it’ll be ready for release in 2027.
As far as I can see, there’s no real incentive for the firm to talk about what it’s got cooking right now. Marvel’s Wolverine and GTA 6 are going to ensure a huge 2026 for its current console, and by all accounts it’s got a new God of War game and Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet locked for the next year.
Those four games alone will sustain PS5’s momentum into the next year and beyond.
But if Microsoft’s going to attempt to force the next-gen agenda, I am curious if it will draw Sony out into the open. Even if it’s dished out a pasting this gen, I do think the PlayStation maker will still be wary of its wily old Redmond rival.
I personally think we will still see the PS6 late next year, unless the RAM issues get so bad that it just becomes impossible to put it out at a feasible price. I’m expecting console generations to feel more like smartphones anyway, so I’d expect most of the system’s software to be shared with the PS5.

Whether that’s enough to stimulate consumer enthusiasm, I’m not sure. But if Sony can’t generate interest in the PS6, then I’m very sceptical of Project Helix’s ability to have any kind of meaningful impact on the market.
Microsoft’s biggest issue will be finding a business model that works, which satisfies its reportedly lofty profit targets.
The organisation will espouse magic maths, as it so often does, but there’s no value in a loss leading piece of hardware if one of its selling points is bypassing Microsoft’s own store and services in favour of third-party options operated by the likes of Valve.
The only conclusion I can come to here is that, even ignoring the ongoing RAM drama, we’re looking at an Xbox “console” that’s potentially double or even triple the price of the PS6. Is that really a threat?
The Microsoft upper-brass is going to talk and talk and talk, that much already seems evident under new executive Asha Sharma.
I’m really curious to see how much Sony pays attention, and whether it coaxes the company to come out and talk more freely about the PS6.
I guess we’re going to find out over the coming months.
What do you think the abrupt announcement of Xbox Helix means for PS6? Will it have any impact at all on Sony’s plans? Do you think it will influence the decisions PlayStation makes about its next-gen hardware? Let us know below.

Why would Sony, in a relatively comfortable position, feel compelled to respond to an absolute desperation move by an erstwhile competitor? Sony is above that and can take its time making its next console great, while carefully considering market conditions and the possibility RAM and CPU / GPU prices may dictate when the next platform releases.
Microsoft is trying to divert attention from the fact it appointed an AI exec who never picked up a controller to run its gaming division.
Why would ya, xbox is desperate and announced their system early to reassure shareholders and fans. But in reality sony is out-selling xbox 4 to 1, they can announce the ps6 6 months from launch and take the wind out of Microsofts sails. I doubt they will change their strategy one bit
Removed - unconstructive
Well-written piece. Still really interested in where this is heading, as either an outside observer or a potential buyer.
I don't think so. New Xbox is just a PC and it would be priced higher than consoles, even ignoring high RAM and SSD price. If 1$ gamepass deal didn't make a dent, then I don't think new console will change the fortune.
Voted No, Helix will not change anything for one logical reason.
People within Sony would have either already been privy to this Helix news long before the general public, or they would have made educated guesses and internal predictions regarding the same subject. In other words, the reality of Project Helix would preemptively have been factored in to whatever Sony’s plans are. That won’t change now just because we the people learned something Sony already knew in advance. Any upcoming PS6 announcements will, to paraphrase the late great Emperor Palpatine, be proceeding exactly as they have foreseen it.
Nah. I'm extremely interested in Helix, and there's a high chance I'll buy it. With that said, Sony can continue doing whatever the f*** they want and likely continue dominating the high-end console space.
Unless Sony absolutely shoots themselves in the foot somehow (like spreading themselves too thin trying to compete directly with the Switch), I doubt Helix or the Steam Machine can do much to disrupt the PS5's status as the go to console.
Sony should just take their time with the PS6 and only talk about it when they are good and ready.
I just don't see a situation where anyone can release next gen hardware at a competitive price for at least two years.
I still think Sony should focus on their handheld first then release PS6 around late 2028 at the earliest.
@HRdepartment "4 big games in two years is pretty sad tbh." That cadence isn't much different then the PS4 era really.
I don't believe Sony thinks Xbox starting the next gen 1 year earlier will do much damage this time, unlike 7th generation. So yeah, I am expecting Fall 2028 at the earliest.
And like you said, Fantastic Four: Wolverine, GTAVI, GoW spin-off and Intergalactic will keep the brand alive with other 3rd part goodness and especially with Pro&PSSR2. No need for PS6 for a while now.
I don't think Sony care to be honest. The PS6 could launch 3 years after the PCXbox and it will still beat its lifetime sales in less then a year.
Sony isn’t gonna rush out the ps6 for a pc with a Xbox logo on it that cost $1500.
I believe you’re looking too deep into it. Micro$oft (well, Xbox) as you said is free falling, they’ve been spitballing ideas and hoping something sticks for what seems like a decade. $ony, on the other hand, has no anxiety or urgency because the PS5 is giving them the best back rub of their life. PS5s are just flying off shelves left and right.
This is the best era for $ony because of third party live service games and microtransactions; the ps5 is a fortnite, COD, Madden machine for tens of millions.
Also because of live service and digital, Xbox former head admitted that they lost the worst generation because of digital data, games, and progress tied to accounts which is pretty ******* major
I don't think so. If PS6 is releasing in 2027, they'd be sharing news in Spring 2026 anyway to inform their investors about the next fiscal year like what they did about PS5 news in April 2019.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2019/04/sony_has_just_revealed_the_ps5_not_launching_this_year
If PS6 isn't releasing in 2027, I don't see Sony saying anything to be honest. Just keeping up the PS5 focus and taking advantage of that Wolverine + GTA6 combo.
I think you have hit the nail on the head with Helix's price - its just going to be far too expensive to compete mass market, and also will come with a multitude of PC inherent drawbacks.
The main competition for the PS6 is going to be the PS5/Pro - if the PS6 does not seriously impress with it's hardware and software, a lot of people wont upgrade, particularly at the price point we all (should) know is coming (c £700 Digital).
Sony need to get the PS6 launch RIGHT, not rush out in response to Xbox.
Showing PS6 right now will be a bad idea for PS5 sales, especially if PS6 have BC for PS5 games.
And so far there's only a tweet about Helix existence without the specs or even price. So i don't see why Sony should quickly respond to that by showing PS6?
Sony shouldn't really be worried about the next Xbox, especially if their machine gets quite expensive (which apparently will). I know I won't be getting their next box, I'll go full PS next gen again, and even if they put PS6 out in 2027, I'll probably buy one in 2029 (gotta wait the first few batches of hardware because a lot of times they're not 100% decent)
Sony are in too much of a commanding position, the don’t need to say a thing. Like Phil Spencer said, the Generation that Xbox needed to win was a couple back now and most gamers are set on the platform that they have invested heavily in as far as gaming library’s go. I couldn’t see anyone that has bought into PlayStation changing now so they won’t be bothered by a new Xbox console, especially on costing $1000 plus.
@get2sammyb These are all genuine questions and not intended (nor Super Nintended) to cause an argument.
Do you believe that Xbox will release a console that costs over £1000/$1000?
Do you believe that Sony will release a much less powerful piece of hardware to cut costs?
Do you believe that Microsoft will allow free access to any PC store and therefore negate any revenue?
How long do you believe Sony will want to make PlayStation hardware?
👍
No, it’s nonsense for every angle, in fact I’d say most people with a PS5 right now the least they want to hear is “the PS6 is coming”.
Microsoft situation is a whole different story, if they weren’t announcing something about their next platform most would just assume there isn’t going to be one, still even with them constantly talking many of us still doubt it’ll actually launch as it’s at least one year and a half away and it could be killed after any quarterly meeting.
My prediction/hopium:
2027 > Sony handheld and Helix release (maybe delayed to 2028)
2028 > PS6 release
Next gen Xbox - $1099-1599
PS6 - $799-$999, perhaps with a cheaper base model going for $599-799
Ram crisis messed things up so bad its almost impossible to even guess these prices
I haven't personally seen much positivity related to Helix, but I know Xbox fans are probably pretty desperate rn.
Frankly after seeing what the Pro can do with Resident Evil Requiem, I don’t think we need it quite yet. Happy to hold out with it for a couple more years. Those that stuck with the base console probably won’t feel the same and would rather get a full gen upgrade, but really, that game really impressed me all the way. Just started my second run today.
@HammerKirby3 nobody care about project helix really besides the die hard Xbox fans. Sony has nothing to worry about they can take their sweet time with the ps6 and get the most of the current ps5.
I put "maybe" because I think Sony might communicate why the PS6 is getting delayed if it's getting delayed, which technically counts as talking about the PS6.
The Helix announcement was just chucked out to bolster the new CEO. This wasn't a strategic announcement or a change in the status quo of what Xbox are doing
I was one of the people who fell into the category of being in no rush for a PS6 and happy to wait for at least another 3-4 years.
However.... the last week or so I've been seriously considering upgrading to a PS5 Pro (despite me insisting I never would lol)
My main reason for wanting to upgrade is to double my storage space and then there's all the reports I've been reading on the new PSSR update which definitely makes it sound more appealing.
On the flip side if we are likely to see a PS6 in roughly 18 months time I'd rather hold off on the Pro and just wait for a PS6.
Without confirmation of Sony's plans one way or the other though, I sort of feel stuck in limbo and not sure when to make my next move.
While a lot has been made by Xbox fans already of the "dream machine" double whammy of "ULTIMATE POWER" super console (apparently more powerful than potential PS6 specs),like Series X all over again, plus access to your PC Games & One/Series X/S catalogue & select 360 stuff...sounds perfect in theory, right? Overcomes Phil Spencer's PS4 was the worst gen to lose games library dilemma.
But if it's supposed to support multiple store fronts libraries like Steam,GOG,Epic etc., why on earth would third party AAA publishers & AA/Indies bother with specific next gen Xbox ports instead of just concentrating on PC, & Nintendo/Playstation versions?🤔
Much like PS6, most publishers will be hedging bets to release on Switch 2 & PS5 where the $$ are...not to say there won't be any next gen exclusives, but with the rampocalypse affecting consumer PC & console supplies, suspect "next-gen" will constrained with cross platform games. Unless the supply & prices on consumer components changes dramatically (& the A.I. tech oligarchy are determined it won't), it'll be the same supply issues that plagued this gen during lockdowns etc., but far pricier. 🤔
@Scottyy honestly with the ram situation this thing realistically won’t be here until 2028. They haven’t even officially announced the console just more of the same stuff saying they are working on a new console. But I definitely think it’s coming in 2028.
Wouldnt think sony is even slightest but worried after this Gen domination, PS6 im sure will be no different. Easy bet
I don’t think so. PS5 and Pro are selling really well, they won’t want to do anything to disrupt that.
At most I think we’ll have a “leak” to someone more reputable that 2027 is happening, perhaps with a few specs.
Sony will say what they want to say when they want to. No sooner, no later
Not Helix’ hardware, but the fact it can run Xbox and PC games, should raise a few alarms at Sony HQ. In fact, them coming back on their decision about PC ports, seems like a little panic reaction just on that.
PC games, if true, is huge advantage for new xbox and for many many gamers it solves lot of problems. And you know what? Xbox deserves renaissance. We've seen how Sony acts when they are fearless and it's not good. And I still don't get, why should X and PS release at once? If Sony is so firm about itself, then let Xbox release whenever they want (as same as Nintendo) and cook PS6 properly, or we end up with "PS5" rushed system again.
It's interesting. Sony doesn't seem to care about anything. They just keep themselves to themselves until they want to talk. But is a new console too big to ignore?
I think that it won't change anything and they'll just do whatever they were going to do. Is the new Xbox a threat? Does the new Xbox have a prayer?
Probably not. Nobody wants an Xbox. And anyone who cares enough about PC gaming to spend the kind of money PC gaming requires one to spend seems unlikely to be excited by an Xbox branded PC.
Xbox wasn't real competition before and the next one will likely be prohibitively expensive on top of all the problems with the brand. I can't imagine anyone at Sony being particulatly worried.
Sony just totally ignore the Helix 🧬 thing.
Do your thing, it is no threat to your console dominance, it is such a niche device.
The Pro is just starting to come into its stride and more power is not needed.
For the first time ever in my long console gaming career, I don’t want a new PS, there is no rush.
Nintendo would not change their plans and don’t you Sony.
I still firmly believe, barring any sort of big change regarding part issues, that the ps6 will be priced similar to the Helix. I see both consoles being much more then the PS5 Pro, with the Helix being not that much higher then the ps6.
I think Sony following Nintendo's footsteps will just ignore it. They're in a comfortable position where they could quite literally shrug off massive backfires in their ambitions. I think their best move right now is to focus on elongating this gen with the GTA launch and in fact making Xbox look dumb with their 1000+ dollar PC/CONSOLE hybrid.
I don't think things are getting better soon. The Steam Machine is still struggling to figure out a shipping date and a price and that's even weaker hardware than the PS5.
Microsoft is trying to force next gen early to disrupt the market. Sony played it conservatively with the Gamepass Noise and the Cheaper console noise and it paid off.
Sony may well respond but I don't think they'll have any genuine concern. This new Xbox PC thing will likely be incredibly expensive and I don't think it will be made in huge numbers either, given they aren't even guaranteed revenue from their own store on it. Meanwhile handheld PC's, whilst popular on social media, don't make any real impact sales wise.
This is just them trying to look bullish at a time when there is uncertainty in their own management
@Deadlyblack I expect Helix to be more expensive than PS6. Today Series X is more expensive than PS5 despite being comparable spec wise. Whilst Helix is seemingly more powerful than PS6 but will be made in smaller quantities and can't be subsidised by their own store due to the inclusion of Steam etc
Microsoft/Xbox is not competing with Sony/PlayStation in the console market anymore. PlayStation can and most likely do make decisions independently from what Xbox is doing.
So no, the Helix will not change anything for PlayStation and the PS6
The hybrid concept is interesting - could work for them - to a point.
I think the problem is that Steam will essentially take over Xbox (as a store front). Losses there on the cuts taken from game sales will be one problem but another is that devs may decide: let’s just make Steam games. That’s where our audience is. And with the Switch 2 (now able to play modern releases well): you could see a situation developing where it’s just Valve, PlayStation and Steam that get priority - won’t matter if Xbox games can play steam titles but you could see there own community fracturing even more.
Sony are in a really strong position currently and don’t think they need a response to Project Helix right now.
I’m always excited by new hardware, but currently playing through Resident Evil Requiem on my base PS5 and think it’s the best looking game I’ve seen, don’t even think a PS5 Pro is needed. Obviously I’ve seen the comparison videos, the digital foundry vid on RER was fantastic and the pro is a step up.
I just think sometimes ignorance is the best policy. I haven’t thought once that man I wish I had better hardware to run this game.
I think 2028 will be the ideal time to release the PS6, I mean I still think the PS5 will be still going strong, but I don’t mind upgrading after 8 years. With prices being high I can justify paying more if it’s going to last me longer.
I think Xbox are in a totally different position. They have great hardware, but the This Is An Xbox campaign damaged their sales and with day one game pass games they needed to pivot.
I like the idea of a new Xbox, but I’m not interested in PC gaming so to me the hybrid nature is just pushing up the price and making it unaffordable for me.
I think there will be a lot of people in a similar position that just want a home console and will bulk at the price.
The new Xbox won’t be out in time for GTA 6 and the PlayStation will be seen as the natural place to play it. If you don’t already have a current gen console then get yourself a PS5 Pro to fully experience this game will be the message.
Silly. Why would they need to break their PS6 silence? Sony is in a good position with the PS5. This generation has been mismanaged for them built upon the grace of the PS4. They are lucky that MS has mismanaged Xbox for the past decade. Let Sony focus on the PS5 experience and giving us cool games. As just now we are getting good current generation only content.
The beauty of PlayStation is the certainty to a degree. It’s the dominant console, it’s the ‘Hoover’ of consoles even to people who don’t play games. Everyone knows it will be ‘PlayStation 6.’ No silly names.
Lots left in the PS5 tank for years to come. I mean look at Requiem and Indiana Jones and more.
Sadly Xbox is gone and now run by Nutella and an AI bro. Joke.
It’s highly probably that the only reason Project Helix was announced officially was to boost Sharma’s profile. By saying she will be talking to partners soon she is trying to take on the narrative for what has been a long term project overseen by her predecessors and show she is out there getting on with the job.
And that’s fine and to be expected.
And what was announced was what we already knew besides the code name. A good code name imo but Microsoft’s issue was never with code names but the final name.
Sony don’t need to do anything. They have already effectively confirmed PS6 with Cernys AMD stuff. And they will release it when it makes sense to do so, which will be measured in different metrics (not forgetting costs of components in a fluid market) than polls on websites.
Sony moved the PS5 ahead when Xbox series was announced. This is why it's launch was so chaotic. They weren't ready at all.
They will do the same for ps6 and it will also be a mess
Depends on Xbox pricing.
If MS pulls another Xbox Ally price range, it won't sell enough to warrant a response from Sony
But if MS pulls a "360", Sony will have to respond in order to avoid a "PS3".
My guess: the former given the RAM/GPU pricing, IF Helix goes to marked next year.
After that, anyone can only guess right now, no matter how sure they sound.
I have a PS5pro and I'm really enjoying it;
but to be honest I have not clue when Sony will unveil the PS6.
said that I wish the best of luck to "Xbox Helix" because a healthy competition is good for the business, in my opinion.
I owned a Xbox Series X, now gifted to my nephew, and for me was a very fine console, however we know how things are going: at the moment almost every MS game is on PlayStation, so...
For the first time ever I'm not too worried about the next generation of consoles. I'm not interested in the PCbox. I could happily use my PS5 Pro for another 4 years. My back log is crazy, filled with PS4 and PS5 games. Plus the other games that u get access to through premium. My series X got used a bit last year for south of midnight and Doom. Currently it's getting turned on for 15 minutes a day to get the reward points. With how things have been going this gen I can't see many ppl switching from playstation to Xbox. So I think Sony can wait before announcing. The series X was more powerful and look how that went. The PS5 has the better controller and better overall experience.
Digital sales are at an all time high. I don't think people are just gonna ditch their vast library of games and switch to Xbox. I don't know if people realise how crucial Backwards Compatibility is.
You are making up the demand of the nextbox - no data suggests gamers are clamoring for it.
Sony's PlayStation won the console war and made M$ a publishing vassal owing its allegiance and fealty to PlayStation.
Playstation's true enemy is Nintendo now. As such, their new hardware and handheld should come to market at an opportune moment for this war to be fought and won.
Nintendo games are very simple cookie cutter stuff, and the Nintendo gamers are made to enjoy that form of simplicity, but I think PlayStation can compete, but it'll take better hardware and better games too.
I do agree that the next consoles are like smartphones. The improvements are incremental, and people will keep buying their brand at their convenience.
I think it probably will force Sony into action earlier than they need to, but I also think both Sony and Microsoft might be in for a bit of a shock when they find out a lot of trust is gone and most people won't buy in to the next gen early for various reasons.
The consoles will be way too expensive and they kind of sh@t the bed with too many games crossing generations for too long. They've essentially trained a lot of us to realise that we can probably go the whole next generation without upgrading and still have access to the majority of games released.
It might just be me, but I'm definitely in a wait and see mode going forward. If I don't like what I see with the direction they take, especially with things like dynamic pricing, physical games dying out and rising prices to simply play online, then I'm leaving Playstation for good.
Nah, but I do think it is still on track for a 2027 / 28 launch. They will have been working with AMD on it for some time you can be sure of that. And it will be cheaper the the new Xbox that is basically a none upgradable PC.
Meh I’ll get a PS6 at some point, not sure if at launch or a year or two later after some iterations to its design have been made internally as usual.
Still if it wasn’t for Covid for last gen and it’s now Ai for this gen…
Pretty much every Xbox initiative gets heralded as The Way The Industry Is Going. Meanwhile, previous talking points are sidelined or abandoned.
Some sort of echo chamber at work, I suppose.
PS5 Pro didn't even push Xbox to release a console like the One X - looking like MS is respecting traditional console release timelines and not releasing anything in-between. You could say that's the reason for the interest in the next Xbox if there's even any, building up anticipation because they haven't had any Pro model since 2020. Dunno why this should push PS to release 6 when they released an in-between Pro less than 2 years.
@themaladroit
I have had 1st wave hardware a while now - PS4, PS4 PRO, PS5, PS5 PRO, and never had an issue (touch wood).
The only console I had issues with was the Xbox360 - 2 failed units under warranty - not for RROD, but for the less publicised Drive (disc) faults which were common.
I could see things going either way. If the Helix is a success then Sony will have to react. But if it fails, they could probably delay. Some of it may have to do with how many people buy GTA 6 on each console. Sony may also feel compelled to try to either simultaneously or quickly thereafter launch PS6 Pro so that they are not too far behind in terms of power for that generation.
Epsteinsoft re-enters the console war? XD
xbox has failed to have any visible marketing presence in the UK for so many years. xbox has next to zero store presence in the UK too, compared to huge PS and Nintendo aisles.
I doubt the average, COD / FIFA console buyer will even know this console exists.
Sony's go to plan of ignoring what Xbox does has worked perfectly so far. Xbox, even under new leadership has really ***** the bed and they already said they are exiting the console market. With the price of memory and everything now I think Xbox is just going to shoot themselves in the foot and Sony will sit back and wait.
Doesn't matter to me when they (xbox or ps) release their next consoles. I'm not buying anything next gen until they got like 5 pure exclusives I feel is must play. I got a Switch 2 when they had 3 exclusives I wanted but I could have easily waited one more year when I think about it.
The next Xbox offers pc and xbox games. It's something different at least.
The next playstation offers a resolution and frame rate bump which at this point.... Really isn't anything to get excited about.
It would take the wildest pitch imaginable for me to want a new playstation anytime soon, the base ps5 is more than powerful enough for years to come. Only a select few even noticed a difference between it and stronger hardware at this point.
There is nothing coming from Microsoft or Sony next year.
It's a nothing burger story.
Too early for PS6. Still very much happy with my PS5 and I just got Switch 2. For me, I am good for at least 3 or more years
Isn't it that the Helix is competing in the pre-build pc market rather than home consoles? So, it won't affect ps5/6 market, especially if its price is much higher...
I kinda feel that the PS5 is hitting that golden time where most developers have released a game or two on it and have now got to grips with how to really make it sing.
The PS5 Pro is also getting lovely upgrades and now appears to be producing excellent results (eg RE9).
So I don't think the PS6 is in a rush to arrive, and with such a big user base I think Sony can happily wait until it is ready and it feels the market is right to reveal it. Rather then getting pushed into showing it's hand by MS.
I kind of disagree with the majority on this. I do think Sony’s hand will be forced to make some kind of statement sooner than they wanted to. I’ve felt like Sony gets easily paranoid about Xbox, whether they need to or not. Buying Bungie (and other studios), changing PS+, expanding cloud streaming, porting to PC… perhaps some of these decisions would have been made without pressure from Xbox, but it sure feels like PlayStation sees Xbox in its nightmares.
Do I think they need to be worried about Helix? No. Do I think they will be worried enough to escalate their marketing and PR now? Yes.
I don’t know that it will even result in a sooner PS6, but if we hear many more details about Helix and if it grabs more headlines, Sony will be forced to tip its hand and at least give the public a peek.
I'm hoping ps6 is out in 2027. My PS5 has graphical issues where when I play the same game on PC, there are no issues. It takes a while for some items to appear on the screen on PS5, while on PC, it's instant.
But if the ram prices are still going up, then maybe wait until they drop in price.
I think Sony is happy with the new Xbox releasing way before the PS6. They can just sit back and watch what the new Xbox will bring. The gap between Sony and Microsoft is so big this generation, they really dont have to worry about anything.
I'm very selfish, I want the next PlayStation to be ready when the next Xbox is ready. Why would you give your trillion dollar competition a 1-3 years head start? Yes Microsoft is far behind but it only takes a fluke for something to go viral and catch on in the mainstream.
@TheArt it’s the exact same problem Phil Spencer attributes to the difficulty in selling Series consoles versus PS5.
So either they haven’t learnt, they think Game Pass makes up for it or they think people will buy old pc games to make up for it or some combination of the three.
@illegalmonkey
Every official comment from Microsoft I have seen says that they are not exiting the console market. What they say the are doing is trying different things because they don’t believe the traditional model works (for them)
Project Helix isn’t an exit from the console market in their eyes. They want to redefine what a console is.
@2here2there For a lot of people the line between a set spec pc and a console is already quite thin. Steam Machine if it ever launches will be seen as a console as much as a pc, since SteamOS is closer to a console setup than windows for the user.
Why are there two choices for 'No' that mean the same thing? LOL!
Sony are the only ones that can mess up the PS6 and as a PlayStation owner since 1996 it’s frustrating seeing the choices that have been made this generation. Less trend chasing and a more focused approach to what they have always been good at would be a great start.
xbox announced air as far as I'm concerned. We all know how hard it is to put out hardware. Sony can bide their time. And everybody knows ps5 and ps5 pro are going to be the main gta 6 consoles.
If - as has been suggested - this launches at between $1000-1500, then i dont think Sony will be overly concerned assuming they are aiming to get a cheaper machine out the door (which in all likelihood will still be in the range of $700 upwards). With that said it largely depends on Microsoft's strategy. Will they try and make first party titles exclusive again or is the genie too far our of the bottle? Are they solely aiming this at enthusiasts or do they plan on it being a system for mass adoption. We will have to wait and see
Essentially this seems like it will be a pc with an xbox sticker slapped on the front. Its the last hurrah for xbox if not successful and I can see them going big on it. Top management at Microsoft seem more invested in this thing being successful than I have seen in recent generations too. Sony's strategy to pull back from PC development does make sense in light of this announcement.
The decision for Sony on whether to release PS6 in 2027 is largely going to come down to the cost benefit analysis of sitting on the SOC developed for the system for another 2 or 3 years. They might just want to push the machine out. It just feels too early to me. PS5 is just hitting its stride and PS5 pro /PSSR should keep it very relevant for some time to come
I honestly think it will largely depend on what Helix actually is. We don’t know anything about the console or if it’ll be genuine competition yet. I hope it’s genuine competition because, as nice as the PS5 is and as profitable as it is, this generation hasn’t exactly been as solid as I was hoping from first party Sony. It’s been a quantity over quality generation for third parties as they fill the gap for the glacial pace of first party releases, and it doesn’t exactly help that the first party games have been largely iterative and safe experiences.
That said though, some indies and third parties have backed away from Xbox. Xbox too has had a quantity over quality approach this generation. They’ve thus far struggled to produce many essential releases throughout the generation, despite releasing far more games than Sony. On top of that, the Series console iteration has had PR nightmare after PR nightmare, whether that’s from lack of games, flopping games, low sales, closing studios, mass layoffs, etc. Xbox has been backed into a corner. Even though the first party software is seeing potentially a better turnaround than what we’re seeing from Sony at the moment, far more damage has been done to the brand and its enabled Sony to stand above, for better and worse.
That said, if Xbox Helix gets announced and Team Green legitimately has a solid software line-up for launch with the reset of a new CEO (even though the work would’ve been done by the previous one), they’d be in a position to have a lot of positive talking points and they’d be able to capitalize on Sony’s current trend of being out of touch with their fanbase and largely doing a lot of the same things that caused Xbox to fail at the beginning of this generation.
Realistically, I think people want Xbox to succeed right now because a monopolistic Sony hasn’t made the industry many gamers want and honestly this generation there’s been some genre holes for the types of experiences people want. Some people want the next Uncharted or the next Skyrim or the next Halo and we aren’t seeing much in that capacity. Sony will only react though if Helix is worth reacting to. If Xbox launches an ultra-console without a software lineup with the selling point being that it has Steam and Epic stores while being double the cost of the last console, there’s nothing to see here.
Like it or not we need Xbox to be competition for Sony again. That way as consumers we win.
I'm sure Sony was well aware of the news long before we were. So no, they won't reactively respond to this as it was already a known factor - and I'm certain they are privvy to a great deal more.
I don't think the recent "leaks" that Sony is departing PC was any sort of coincidence either. It seems to me many of these leaks are very strategically timed, huh?
If anything, maybe a collective sigh of relief at the $1000-1500 expected price tag, as this lets them off the hook for their own $700-1000 machine in the future.
Next gen is gonna be pricey folks, whatever your hardware preference may be. I'd prefer 2029, give the PS5 more time to find its potential - because it hasn't just yet thanks to languishing in a cross-platform limbo for its first 3-4 years (thank you Jim Ryan).
Sony can and will wait. As mentioned, this year is gonna be HUGE for PS5, so why take the spotlight away from it? Microsoft are in a very different position; they’re desperate to drum up some excitement about Xbox, so they’re teasing a shiny new console. I personally don’t think it’ll reverse their fortunes, though.
If Sony does not see Microsoft Gaming as a competior then they do not need to do anything until they are ready.
I think the pulling of PC ports makes me think Sony does still see MS as a threat and will not want them to get the jump on a perceived home console. MS has been known to strong-arm Sony many times on areas like with achivements, back compat, and crossplay/PC ports. It's common inside knowledge that Sony thought the Series S was the main console and had to overclock their CPU and add a new GPU at the last minute to keep up with the Series X.
If MS drops paid online, they will probably strong-arm Sony into doing that too.
They won't say anything much this year, but if MS is planning for next year, they will push Sony to do the same. They do not want to lose any of the market share they have gained to the looming threat of a growing PC market.
Sony is not a platform innovator by any means; their success was to observe, react, and then market it better. It did this with Sega and Nintendo and now with MS.
First, this may somehow force Sony to release PS6 latest in 2028, and not 2029 or so. They cannot let competitor to take lead in new generation at the beginning. New generation is somehow a kind of new opening, if people will buy MS box they may not pay for Sony box.
Second, Sony remembers what happened when X360 released before PS3. Better or not, more expensive or not. It will be much more powerful and if they wait 1-2 years with PS6 release, people who want newer and more powerful box will already have one.
Let’s wait. A year or so isn’t too long it will pass fast.
@EfYI
What in the world of uninformed opinions is this?
It seems that MS is competing with Valve now and not Sony lol
I don't think Sony is bothered they are so far ahead of MS now.
I might just buy this, I’ll have ps5/6 for gt7/8 and I’ll have this Xbox for of racing games, ac2 etc
I think the answer is that Helix seems to be something fresh, like an evolution of the Steam Deck concept, an "all in" device that can play say old Steam games, Xbox games, emulators in an since it is a PC you can stream media, watch movies but with the convenience of a console aka plug and play.
I am very interersted in Helix but I may not be able to afford it.

It's for kids in my opinion. The mechanics are accessible, no?
@Rich33 really? Well, I'm still hesitant about buying new hardware but i might give it a go (if i have the money when the console is out), who knows. The earlier, the better. Thanks for letting me know about your experience, btw
@EfYI Accessible mechanics ≠ "very simple cookie cutter" stuff.
But if you think games like Zelda and the 3D Mario games are just for kids then by all means, miss out on some of the best videogames ever made.
Xbox needs needs next gen more than Sony. The Series X/S brand has stagnated & they are in serious need of a new console & new energy.
I'm ditching 5 pro as soon as ps6 comes out if it doesn't have stupid ***** like "no no backwards compatibility" or other bs.
@themaladroit
No problem - all hardware has a small 'failure rate' but (through experience) I have always though well of Sony's hardware
@General-Foley i upgraded my tv just for my ps5 pro , and i've tried out resident evil both on my ps5 pro and base ps5 in my room , i'll say this , the ps5 pro blows it out of the water on my tv. pssr 2.0 looks amazing with the reflections ect.
@darylb24 honestly this is just my opinon but i feel like they are pulling nixxes off of pc ports and putting them in a position that bluepoint was in doing remasters/remakes and being a support studio.
@MrPeanutbutterz
I did try some of the games Nintendo offers one way or the other. Mostly when I was a kid - some gaming night clubs have the original Mario car game as a party game which is fun once in a blue moon still. But still - it is so very simple that it is nostalgia* that carries the experience for me. Compare that to PSVR 2 GT7!
Removed - unconstructive
sony does not have to respond they know xbox is no longer a competitor for them..
I don't need more power. I'm perfectly super happy with the PS5 Pro. Currently replaying Demons Souls Remake for the 4th time. Wish I could play a Bloodborne Remake with the same polish and performance. What I need is more GOOD games. Not live service games, not mediocre games, not re-skinned sequels. Not the same as everything else kind of games.
Games need to be so good that you WANT to replay them many times and enjoy it just as much each time. If not, then it's not a good game. Mediocre and OK games are games you never replay. They're not worth to buy a system for. Which is sadly 80-90% of the games being made and sold today.
@JJtheTexan Because we Playstation gamers want more details on the PS6!! Do it for the players.
@Neonix totally agree with you, some of today's best games are already over 10 years old like Bloodborne, The Witcher 3, The Last of Us... these are games from the PS4 era.
I doubt SONY cares as much about XBox as they used to. They now want to compete with Nintendo.
@Dman10 too soon? By the time the ps6 comes out the ps5 will be 9-10 years old. That’s probably the longest gap Sony has had between console generations.
As I very happy owner of;
PS1
PS3 Slim
PS4 Glacier White Edition
Xbox
Xbox360 Halo Reach Limited Edition
Xbox One S
PC
I am very glad that I skipped current gen all together.
Lets roll on to the next gen and leave this shameful era behind.
I may even buy both Project Helix and PS6 (if priced correctly).
With the PS6 Sony needs to bring back OtherOS like from the PS3, but have OtherOS be SteamOS so they can claim it can play PC games too and really have an edge in competition, Since then people will choose to still grab a PS6 and and be able to stave off threats from the Steam Machine and new Xbox by doing everything, while still playing everyones classic PS games they have in their library
@Nitefire7786 i honestly doubt the steam machine would be a worry for sony, same with the xbox, it pretty much was confirmed that ms games are still going to be on playstation , and they are no longer focused on exclusives.
Helix being a pc that emulates a console experience tells me sony isn't gonna sweat it much
Why? Wait for the next Microsoft system to come out and see the reactions from the ones who buy it...then, build on that and add better and more things to their console (Sony that is). If Sony really wanted to, they can make their next console PC compatible and even run PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4 and PS5 games on it at once...granted the price would be ridiculously high. The console war has been going on for generations...Sega Versus Nintendo, Nintendo Versus Sega...then came Sony to compete against Nintendo, then Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft.
Microsoft's most successful console was the 360, and (even though I own their consoles), there's nothing rewarding with the Xbox One or Series X...after Xbox One, there were really was a small library of exclusives, and Microsoft doesn't seem to keep franchises alive or going (HINT...Viva Piñata, Owning Rare's Back Catalogue, and almost all original XBOX exclusives...even Fable seemed to miss the last two consoles).
Sony isn't worried. The PS4 beat out the Xbox One and the PS5 beat out the series x...PS3 struggled, but the library of games made up for it. Nintendo had flopped systems, Sony had flopped systems, Microsoft had flopped systems...who cares? Get the console you like and enjoy the games.
Tiger hand held consoles are more of a concern than Xbox.
Even a new barcode battler is more of a concern than Xbox.
@EfYI Comparing the very first kart racer (that released some three and a half decades ago) to GT7 in VR is a choice for sure.
Sure their games appeal to kids, but stuff like Super Mario World, Zelda, etc. are wildly creative. Heck, the level design of Titanfall 2 was inspired by Super Mario Galaxy.
@MrPeanutbutterz
But did the formular ever change, though? The newer gokart games are cut from the same cookie cloth?
Also, another example is Super Smash Bros on Switch. I played that against some teenagers, and it is a deceptively simple button smasher where you can sometimes recover by jumple jumping when beating off the ledge.
My point is: I rate Nintendo high, but not as high as PlayStation and don't get the appeal that it has for many, many adult gamers.
