It's been a console generation of serious ups and downs for PlayStation, and it feels like a lot of those downs have come over the last couple of years.
It's not controversial to say that Sony's been taking Ls for quite some time — the general perception of PlayStation as a brand, and by extension the PS5, has nosedived into negativity thanks to a number of factors.
But in short, it just seems as though Sony's struggled to properly understand its target audience over the course of this generation, and that's led to an awful lot of unrest in hardcore circles.
Now, before I continue, I should stress that from a business point of view, the PS5's been a roaring success. At least, for the most part.
Despite the initial difficulties of launching a console during a global pandemic and having all kinds of production timelines upended, the PS5's done exceedingly well for itself.
Meanwhile, the PS Store continues to be an absolute goldmine for everyone involved. Sony's basically making more money than ever before.

But you could argue that this level of relative success has blinded the company to a number of festering faults spread throughout its gaming portfolio.
Its push into the live service market has been a disaster of epic proportions, for example — and personally, I think that's probably been the biggest point of contention for so many fans.
As the generation's worn on, it's felt like Sony's been too busy chasing trends to properly grasp what its most loyal supporters actually value.
And that's why I think this upcoming State of Play is particularly important. This showcase is set to be, in essence, PlayStation's big summer blowout. E3's obviously long gone, but this is the closest thing we're going to get.
Indeed, Xbox has an event as well, and that's airing a couple of days after Geoff Keighley's Summer Game Fest bonanza. This State of Play is happening before all of that, on the 2nd June.

I should stress that we've been here before — and recently, at that. There was a State of Play back in February that had a similar kind of weight attached to it, and that one turned out to be pretty damn good, boasting all kinds of highly rated announcements and reveals.
But this is what I'm getting at: even that excellent State of Play example — arguably the best prerecorded broadcast that Sony's ever put together — couldn't turn the tide. A few weeks later and we were back to where we started, with negativity seeping into every PlayStation-related topic.
If Sony wants to win back some much-needed faith, then this newly announced show has to be a banger. Early signs are promising, I suppose, since Marvel's Wolverine has already been confirmed as a headliner — and the whole thing's going to last over 60 minutes.
But without wanting to bring the mood down, can you imagine if, say, halfway through the broadcast, we get a sizeable update of Fairgames?

Any mention of the live service shooter has been met with near total disdain for years now, and it's exactly the kind of re-reveal that would suck the life out of the showcase. Even if, against all odds, it looked incredible, it feels like the damage has well and truly been done.
My point here is that Concord's got a hell of a lot to answer for. The negativity that currently surrounds PlayStation has stemmed from many places — such as the significant hardware price hikes — but so much of it can be traced back to the abject failure of misguided projects like Concord.
Even an appearance from Horizon Hunters Gathering would go down like a lead balloon at this point.
I'm convinced there's an alternate universe where Guerrilla Games' co-op action title is being championed thanks to its striking art direction and an unshakeable faith in the studio's talent.
But in our reality, there's just no way it can gather any meaningful momentum because of PlayStation's doomed live service shenanigans. It's brutal, but this is a problem of the platform's own making.

So, I'll reiterate: this big State of Play needs to be a home run, unless Sony's adamant to keep this losing streak going. It needs to give PS5 players a real reason to be excited for what is, effectively, the closing years of a console generation.
Maybe Wolverine will be enough — I trust Insomniac to show off some super cool stuff — but a showcase that promises over an hour of content can't afford to miss the mark.
That's always been true, even back in the days of E3, but right now, Sony's saddled with spiralling hardware costs, first-party studios struggling to find their footing five years into a console generation, and a general perception that PlayStation's management don't have a clue.
It's time to put up or shut up.
How are you feeling about this upcoming State of Play? What do you actually want from it? Lay out your expectations in the comments section below.

I'd love to see something like blood and truth 2 for psvr2 that 1st one was sick
For the die-hards, this is important, but PlayStation's success is mostly from casuals who probably won't watch anyway.
This State of Play will have a hard time, regardless of its quality, just because the last one is widely considered one of the best they've put on.
Sadly these days, everything seems to have to be the best thing ever, or the worst thing ever, with nothing in between, and no nuance.
I still think this generation has been the best generation yet based on my overall enjoyment, but thats not to say Sony haven't made mistakes - they just haven't made as many mistakes / as big mistakes as various outrage suggests.
Overall, I agree with the article - Sony should be very selective with what they show, however sometimes they just can't win as even if Wolverine's showing is amazing, we will still hear "Not ANOTHER superhero game" or some such complaint; not to mention I'm sure it will be labelled as "woke" before the footage even airs...
Sony just need a slightly newer logo and to change the name to PLAYSTATION and then they'll be back!
It always feels like we collectively get bent out of shape if a SOP is poor, and the opposite if it's really good, but ultimately, we all stay on board waiting for whatever comes next regardless. So would it really matter if this next one is a hit or a miss? Honestly, I can't remember half the stuff they announce in SOPs anymore at this point. If it's not a Spider-Man, Wolverine, GoW, Star Wars, etc., the real big stuff a lot of us come to SOPs and showcases in general for, so it doesn't matter to me personally anymore if they nail it or mess it up. Every time a SOP is "bad", I find the general sentiment is, "That sucked... Oh well, hopefully the next one will be better," and we move on.
Also, the console and gaming space is in such a weird spot right now that I don't think Sony has to do much of anything to keep its existing player base engaged. It's not like PS users are jumping ship in droves to Xbox or PC just because Sony isn't lighting it up all year round. Would it be nice to have a great showing? Yes. Does Sony need a really good show to stay relevant and win people back? Probably not, we're still going to buy their games and play our PS5s.
...I'd love to see LBP4 though...
I agree that brand perception on PushSquare is at an all time low. As for State of Play, I don’t understand why some get so worked up over marketing and glorified commercials.
They just need to show good games, simple as that, whether that be first party or third party, remember how positive everyone was after the last SoP.
If they open the show with a still of Herman Hulst and the word ‘Sacked’ underneath it, it will be one of Sonys greatest State of Plays ever!
No live serice games, either first or third party, would be a nice start.
As for the rest, nothing Sony shows there will bring back the trust they lost... well, except maybe GTA6;
The lack of release dates is one of the biggest problem the industry has right now. There’s games, but are there?
We know games are coming, but there’s still little to know is coming soon for sure. We keep hearing about layoffs, studio closures, and cancellations and meanwhile the studios can’t even know when they’re slating thonhs anymore. Get the business side of things together. Squash the leakers. Give the customer some confidence rather than uncertainty. Sony’s silence stance has made it look like they’re aloof these days.
In these times, we need more certainty and awareness, so we can plan on investing in gaming wisely, especially if sales goals are so high for these publishers.
Calling it now, Fairgames gets shadow dropped as a F2P game.
@JoDoMac Well from the play testers on Fairgames, who said it was awful I wouldn't hold your breathe...
I was so enamored with PlayStation (after two decades of being Xbox only) that jumped in with both feet - bought a PS5 Pro, the Pulse Elite headset, the PSVR2, The DualSense Edge, the PS Portal, and the Marathon controller (as well as the PS Plus Premium subscription and more games than I can ever hope to play). Their last State of Play was amazeballs to me! I am in love with the idea of Horizon: Hunters Gathering! I'm a gigantic Marathon fan. My 19 year old daughter has since bought her own PS5 (at the new prices), and my 16 year old daughter is wanting to work a summer job to buy her own. Even my 21 year old married daughter is talking about getting her own PS5.
My point is, whatever they are doing is working for some of us. I was won over by this late generation, and I'm now a gigantic fan. Despite cheering Concord's death from the green seats a couple of years ago, all of this drama (especially around the AWESOME Marathon) is making me wonder if it was actually a good game after all...
Problem with State of Play is unless every game is a AAA first party title people will be down on it. Yes they do need to show some heavy hitters but you know there will be some charming indies, some anime, at least one arena shooter and some other live service rubbish. I dont mind the variety but the vocal masses really hate it
Unfortunately, I disagree with this sentiment. Now that both Sony and Nintendo hold an oligopoly on console gaming and without much real competition, they have free will on pricing and game selection, i.e., the consumer loses without fair competition.
For a few weeks now I have been reflecting on how much entitlement we, gamers, apparently are owed.
For starters: the level of scrutiny we sustain to the gaming industry is WAY more abrasive and critical than any other entertainment industry like music or movies.
"Unremarkable Sales numbers, "nobody asked for this game", are just quotes and headlines I see constantly. Imagine people saying " We didn't ask for this show, Netflix!". Also, any niche game would be delighted to be in the top 10 of the month. But here we are, always demanding more. Never satisfied. And worst yet: the entitlement!
While I do agree PS as a brand could do better, they don't owe us anything. "Sony must deliver"...or " Time to put out or shut up". What the hell?
@Oram77 considering how low my confidence is on the decision makers at PlayStation, I’ll continue to hold my breath!
@Rich33 Agreed with this.
Personally I'm having as much if not more fun than I've ever had in this hobby. That's not to say there haven't been some serious blunders from Sony, but that's mostly interesting background noise for me. It doesn't impact my mood.
From this state of play I'll be happy with Wolverine and one other thing that excites me. That's a win for me. Not necessarily a win for Sony, but a win for me and that keeps me happy in my hobby.
It won’t take much from what we know for Sony to have a fantastic show.
Of course the below need or should be top quality AAA Sony games.
However.
Wolverine Oct 2026
Intergalactic March 2027
God of War spin off game September 2027
And some lower end games like Horizon Hunters etc.
It is that simple if the games bring it.
For the mass audience PS5 is doing just fine, if your online and engaging with gaming forums and twitter you will only be alive to the negativity.
I mean, Wolverine could be ok but it certainly wont be the game to save ps5's end years. It needs something spectacular like a bloodborne ps5 remake or sequel. But ya the gen has been dud after dud for me unfortunately, no reason to get a ps6 if all I can look forward to is more live service or GoW and horizon sequels

As others have said, it just doesn't matter.

I think people put way too much stock into internet outrage that just colours their perception.
Sony for me have a very good lineup of games this year.
God of War Sons of Sparta
Marathon
Saros
Kena: Scars of Kosmora
Marvel Tokon: Fighting Souls
Marvel's Wolverine
And that's what should matter most to us.
I mean people are still gaming on PS and that's never going to change. The vast majority of PS5 owners have no idea about this "perception". My GF games nearly as much as me but she doesn't follow gaming news at all, if i was to ask about this "negative perception" she would look at me puzzled. End of the day Reddit is always negative, this site and its users let's be honest love moaning me included and social media is just toxic nowadays. Sales matter not online talk.
The negativity is just way overblown, luckily that negativity doesn't reach the casual gamers who are the majority. So I wouldn't say this SoP is going to be a deal breaker for Sony.
How to make a great show.
1. Don't show trash & Future failures like Horizon Hunters Gathering
2. Don't show trash & Future failures like Fairgames
3. Because you are opening with Marvel's Wolverine you have to close with something big like the God of War spinoff or Spiderman 3 or the rumored Xmen game
4. Have some Surprise 1st party game announcements
5. Have some Surprise 2st party game announcements just to make even more people happy
@Shepherd_Tallon @DennisReynolds @AdamNovice @Rich33 I've said this before but ever since people can get paid for tweets, the platform literally revolves around being as negative/toxic as possible, Just look at the Forza 6 "discourse" people are losing their minds over the type 3 option... doesn't effect anything about the game at all but nope the game is bad now apprently to those people 🙄
@XenonKnight I'm holding out hope that Intergalactic will be the closer for the show.
@Oram77 hell no i dont want that thing as the closer and if it is I'm not watching the closer
@XenonKnight Well then I wasn't expecting that reaction 😅
Just think what opening with Marvel's Wolverine and then closing with the announcement of a Xmen game plus the Spiderman 3 with both only coming to PS6 would do for the sales of PS6.
@XenonKnight I just think opening on a hero game and closing on a hero wouldn't fly for most people, not saying those games wouldn't be hype.
Seeing the show opening with Marvel's Wolverine then the last three in this Order first the God of War spinoff then Spiderman 3 then the rumored Xmen game would drive the pc/Xbox borg nuts.
don't be so dramatic. 99% of ps5 owners are utterly oblivious to all this schoolyard drama.
@wildcat_kickz 100%
The drama LOL.
Marathon was good, SAROS was great, Tokon looks great, Wolverine is going to be good at the very least. I don't see the big problem ... actually you know what the actual problem is? To use Horizon Hunters to picture "the bad" when Horizon Hunters actually looks fun compared to 4:loop and whatever fairgames is going to be.
If you are a PS fan you have received good games, if the only thing you care is for those games to be internet favorites then you are in the wrong place because PS is "enemy number 1" LOL.
last state of play was fantastic the reception was off the charts..
Hyped for the Highguard 2 announcement that will close out the show
The negativity is internet bubble stuff, as other people have said above. There's a strange schism between internet "discourse" (to give it too much credit) and general day-to-day life of everyone else. For example, purely going off "real life," I wouldn't even know the Switch 2 exists. I've never seen one outside of the internet, I've never heard anyone mention it outside of the internet. The little kids of my friends that had a Switch now have or want a PS5. Yet say that on the internet and it's like kicking a wasps' nest (at least in some places).
If I said "Are you going to watch the State of Play?" to any of my friends, even ones with a PS4/5, they wouldn't even know what it is.
"It's been a console generation of serious ups and downs for PlayStation"
Tbh I have yet to see any ups. To me it still feels like this generation has barely started
I get that they've released SOME 1st party stuff, but it just doesn't amount to much in my eyes, and most of it doesn't interest me. Third parties have kept it all afloat imo, and even then only just above water. Maybe it's because I'm getting older or whatever but this gen just hasn't done it for me at all
If you're a gamer first, this is not the doomsday so many want to believe. Even if Sony doesn't deliver anything good, so what? People act like other companies aren't still producing banger games. I mean you could eat for months on end from just Capcom alone. Do I want to see Sony return to form with better games? Hell yeah. Do I think it's some kind of make or break? Absolutely not. No PS player is going anywhere regardless.
@Oram77 Yeah i wish PQ would stop paying attention to reddit and social media.
It’s crazy to think how nailed on they were during the ps4 gen compared to now where they just seem distant and out of touch.
why should PlayStation want to win anyone back when they're more successful with the mainstream than ever before
I think its gonna feel more important to the core fans than sony itself.
Personally if they can give me one first party game i like the look off i'd call it a success. I havent been attached to their games this gen, especially compared to previous gens.
I think Media Molecules game (if it is a proper game this time) or Astro Bot 2 (probably not, it'll likely be saved for ps6) would work for me.
Don't forget this was announced today
New Kingdom Come & LOTR Middle-Earth Games Announced By Warhorse Studios
https://insider-gaming.com/new-kingdom-come-lotr-middle-earth-games-announced-by-warhorse-studios/
@Nf157 There will be a Astro Bot 2 but the PS6 will make it out before it comes out.
Please be a banger, this is getting really hyped. Also please no more than 15 minutes of Wolverine, including interviews.
I thinkg Hermen Hultz could win over lots of fans by announcing his resignation
I still watch game shows but practically speaking they don’t mean much. For a long while the shows of MS/‘real gamer’ Phil Spencer were beloved by the internet/influencers for secret reveals, splashy CG, cool merch and shadow drops during shows but none of that translated into real world success.
Sony should just keep showing real gameplay of stuff close to release. That strategy has worked out pretty well for them.
All that being said I agree Sony should mercykill Fairgames and Horizon online 😋.
I think it isn't that important and that PS5 is fine.
However, this is a chance to bring home the signal change from dead multiplayer properties to prosperous single player games. So, it isn't like there isn't a lot to gain from this.
The price hikes for PS plus is non-existent for the players who try and get a year on discount by letting the service run out. That could change, but it is really a bargain at this point. A 10/10 service for me.
If they want me to get blown away, then the following will happen:
@DualWielding Someone needs to fire his ass before the 2nd.
@EfYI Didn't they tell Bend they couldn't do Days Gone 2?
@XenonKnight
Yeah, it is pure fantasy from me.
I say prosperous single player games which to SOME extent ignores the fact that such a small percentage of players actually buys full priced games nowadays.
Not remotely important.
Barely anyone watches - relatively speaking compared to the size of the market.
Secondly, what have Sony got to fear? Where are you all going to go?
Xbox? Nope, most of you celebrated its demise. It's no longer a force or alternative.
PC? Nope, most of you celebrated exclusivity returning to Sony, so you aren't getting access to the games over there.
You are all a captive audience. Sony ain't sweating.
Wow, way to dampen the mood immediately!
As if every other article and user on here isnt already complaining daily about their live service f*** up, the moment we finally get some exciting news you just have to immediately put a negative spin on it, geez!
Sure they fumbled it up with their live service, but we’ve had Death Stranding 2, Ghost of Yotei, Marathon and Saros in the last months, and we have Marvel Tokon, Kena 2, Wolverine and Intergalactic coming up. Is this really so bad or are people just miserable lately? I cant tell anymore
I guarantee there will be some live service talk.
This site is so dramatic Sony ain’t got nothing to worry as long as they show good games.
@LogicStrikesAgain I want a Ghost of Tsushima 2 damit. Marathon is a pvp game & I could care less about a pvp game. And I'm not into rogue games.
How's about a review of any number of the amazing psvr2 games that have come out recently - flight simulator, must, riven, little knightmares. Some wider Sony ecosystem positivity would be great!
@LogicStrikesAgain People are just miserable.
@LogicStrikesAgain Just miserable. I do genuinely wonder if I should spend as much time browsing the comments as I do. It really is becoming a drag. Between the constant negativity and the trolls it's just dull.
@XenonKnight I'm a bit afraid to ask, but Yotei is Tsushima 2, no?
Not considering it as such is fairly arbitrary. And hoping SP just has another 5-year dev cycle Ghost game at the ready isn't very realistic.
Completely agree with the live service bs and Sony changing trends but saying that PS5 is the worst generation is pure stupidity PS5 is on par with PS4 sales wise by this time and the SP first party PS5 are pretty darn good and the console sales prove it
They need to change things for the next gen but this gen is a straight W overall
@RoomWithaMoose No its not, it's a side game to GoT.
A GoT 2 would have Jin Sakai as the main character.
@Yor-sama "Worst" doesn't have to mean 'bad,' right? I mean, if I had to rank each PlayStation generation, 5 would probably be at the bottom (3, 2, one, 4, 5, I reckon). But that doesn't mean any of them are wholly bad, or anything
@XenonKnight Definitely not a side game. Definitely a full-blown successor.
It's fine if you want another Jin game, but Yotei is a sequel to Tsushima.
Like damn, just having a medieval 2 or a sly cooper remake would be great in my eyes.
@EYEBALL They are looking into rebooting IPs.
@XenonKnight Sweet
