The trailer looked dismal, the art style was as whack as the forgettable title... ( a dollar sign? So edgy...) and what was the unique selling point, again? Oh, a colourful 1st/ 3rd person live service shooter. Haven't had one of those in a minute... 🙄
When will we start getting more original games again, instead of incessant extraction shooter and gacha game clones?
I would really like to go a month without the news of a new gacha game's imminent release. These things are becoming the new live-service slop extravaganza...
@Kiefer-Sutherland With so many games, by time I've hit the 60-80 hour mark, I feel I've seen, done, and am tired of it all. Those rare few will see me start a new game immediately after, and still enjoy it (Elden Ring, BG3, Witcher 3, for example...). Seldom do I feel the need to add DLC onto such a lengthy run time, but having only played some of the first KC, I can full well see the appeal of getting further lost in this game.
@wildcat_kickz Couldn't agree more! And for so many reasons, despite its flaws, I still feel ps3 was something of a golden age... and the console also had backwards compatibility!
I think, instead of so many remasters/remakes, and failed pursuits of the live service sphere, it would be silly of Sony not to just have a team that could be working on bringing up to scratch a few of the older gems, and specifically some of the rarer late ps2 to ps3 titles. They need not have all the bells and whistles, so to speak, but it'd be nice to be able to play a few gems from that time on the modern hardware. Premium seems to be a right step, (and with that, having those individual titles available for purchase) but content-wise, it's pretty slow going.
One of my gripes with Destiny is that every new expansion introduces new character class abilities, but they tend to suck and be less impact full than the starting powers, in some cases. I used to like throwing an energy shield around a la 'Cap America', but then it got turned into... a shadowy bow that did no damage? 🤔
@UltimateOtaku91 I'm 'old school', but let's not act like Red/ Blue, and particularly Yellow weren't defining games of a generation. Oh, and then Gold/ Silver, which expanded to 2 islands. These games were incredible! I won't say they were without flaws, but the modern day rom hacks (cough cough) are literally the best pokemon games, period, and wouldn't exist without the OG's.
I'm keen for it! Can easily find another friend to play with, and just let the 3rd space go to an online random... obviously, without much method for communication, sticking together is gonna be a 'make or break' with running a whole party of strangers, but my limited time from the beta seemed to suggest that most people would rather band together, than run off alone in search of glory.
To be honest, the story felt like the weakest part to me. I played this with my partner, and even she was skipping the cutscenes, so I can't even imagine who their target audience is supposed to be... (gamer guys who like boobs, supposedly?)
I just imagine a cgi slogfest without any real substance. Not too dissimilar to the game then... 😉
Didn't they release, and promptly close down X-defiant not long ago? Another, not-so-bad, but not so well received hero shooter... and making another that's purely battle royale is their next step? Couldn't they have just added a battle royale mode to their last effort, before cancelling it?
Crossplay has just opened up the doors to even more fun. Now started a 3 player party, across PS5 and Xbox/ PC, eith each using their own character. Feels about the closest to playing tabletop DnD as 3 people can get across being in 3 different places.
@Dimey You're in for a great time! Did the same thing with 2 friends of mine. The campaign also being 3 player means that whoever is p1 gets to be the "main" guy, so you can potentially revolve players for different experiences, though they are largely all the same, in that you're not excluded from using any weapons, etc.
@ShogunRok For sure. I can understand them wanting to distance themselves from some of the meme-worthy imagery of competitive play just being 2 characters constantly crouch-dashing back and forth, but there has to be a better way to incentivise aggression, without punishing the alternative and distancing yourself too far from what makes the series feel like it does. 8 definitely feels distinct from 7, but that's not necessarily a good thing, when it no longer feels like the Tekken people have grown to love.
I think the price point is still a little too high, to be honest. Matter of factly, the only games I'd really even be interested in are MvC2, maybe the Xmen, and possibly the punisher beat em up. Paying 40 quid for 2/3 retro games just isn't doing it for me, but I imagine if it drops sub 30 in a decent sale, a lot more people would be tempted to bite.
It's funny that they announced so many new changes, that genuinely had their player base confused at the least, and up in arms at worst. Their response was "chill guys, just wait to play it, and you'll see it's good." Backlash seemingly warranted, they've had to now undo all these changes, but what a confusing stance to adopt in the first place. The game was good- if anything, favoured all out aggression too much, so... why on earth would you choose to further penalise defensive play and options?
@naruball On disc, for sure, but I think even MK1 is regularly on sale (digital) with all the dlc etc. The ultimate edition tends to go for about the same 20 quid I grabbed MK 11 for.
@Perturbator I actually think that'd be a great idea, so long as it couldn't be abused? (Like, by people referring to another player constantly as 'toxic' to get them purposely babied up, even if innocent). But to actually create or have some form of visual 'punishment' be implemented for people who're being abusive would be pretty good!
It's like MGSV had the chicken hat, if you died a lot. You could wear the chicken hat, sure; get some infinite ammo out of it, or whatever else, but... do you really want to be stuck watching Snake roll around with a comedy chicken on his head? Yes, was clearly the answer for many.
I enjoyed playing it with friends, up to the end of the story and a little thereafter. Dipped into a couple of seasons, to see what was different, but I really lost interest and just couldn't fathom the slog to get my character to level 100. Think I bailed around lv 70 and never went back!
@ChrisDeku To be honest, regardless of my own personal tastes (and I will caveat this by saying I really enjoyed how Destiny played and felt!) I just don't think the game looks good; visually speaking, it looks messy, and not just the style. The levels are completely random, just boxes with painted lines and arrows everywhere, like what universe is this supposed to be set in, or why? The art direction also just doesn't appeal to me, and then, essentially just being 3v3ve mode, with limited characters and levels, looks like a game I'd grow bored of very quickly. The appeal seems to be just that it'll 'feel' good to shoot, (because bungie) and there's a risk of always losing your stuff. Great.
I'll say that I played Warzone a bit, and I had some fun on it. But it's free, and I got bored after a month of running the same level, so let's see how committed Bungie is to keeping this alive!
I bought Helldivers 2, pretty much day 1, because of the lower price point, the crossplay potential (with friends who own it also, on pc, etc.) And because I played the 1st, and was aware that it's quite novel, frantic, and fun. It doesn't take itself too seriously, and you can't lose progress.
Nevertheless, I literally haven't played it in a year, and while I enjoy dipping in and out of multiplayer shooters, my preference really is coop, or pve stuff. I don't really see what this has to offer to stand out and compete for player time and attention.
@PuppetMaster I don't personally see what TLoU has to do with football, which is why it feels a bit out of place to me, much like putting it all over underwear, whereas, I think someone using a prime spot to make jokes and support indie devs, and games that aren't their own, sounds a lot less invasive or like pushing your product on people. But agree to disagree.
@PuppetMaster And yet, I just read about how LocalThunk sent in the clown to accept his Bafta at the game awards, while using the platform to promote a different title entirely; Animal Well. So indeed, the above is an example of standard business practice, but I think it's fair to say the standard is quite shameless, when compared to the exceptions.
Excuse my constant cynicism, but this just seems like another example of shameless corporate conglomeration. A videogame becomes a TV series, becomes the sponsor of a football team, while actual footballers are now finding themselves in fighting game franchises. Art imitating life imitating art. If only the (football) pitch was full of zombies... them again, the case could be argued...
Interesting split in the polls. To be honest, I enjoyed Halo 1 and 2, back in the day, and had some fun on Destiny, despite falling off the 2nd pretty quick. Nevertheless, the art style of this really doesn't appeal to me, (although most seem to be of a different opinion!) so while I'm not particularly interested, it seems it has a chance of success if it can pick up traction.
@GirlVersusGame Playing Vegas 2 with a friend, via coop or split screen, was one of the best shooters of the PS3 generation. It'd be great to get another like that!
I'm one of the (seemingly) few people excited to play Nightreign. I don't see that it'll work especially well with a mixed group, without any way to communicate effectively, but with friends on a headset, I don't see why not. Nevertheless, I would have much less interest in this, whatever it is, should it come to PS5.
Personally the PvPvE focus doesn't really appeal. I (sometimes!) enjoyed the risk of being invaded, playing a souls game with friends online, but I wouldn't want that to be the focus of my experience. A coop PvE style, however, is up my street!
@Member_the_game This is absolutely true, and I couldn't endorse it enough. Sadly, it won't happen, because we still have the 5% who will pay, regardless of price, and the 30 odd percent who will pay "grudgingly". Which means very little, because begrudgingly or otherwise, they're still selling out.
I can only imagine that a Horizon TV show would watch like bloated, formulaic, trash, hurtling through multiple seasons of waffle. People want to chase the 'ever green' road of always having content to feed and sell the audience, but, much like the live service industry- there's already a lot of that, and if you don't have the pull, you've failed. A film is much less risky, in a sense.
@get2sammyb That was always one of the things that blew ne away with TLoU: that peoppe push up against walls etc. And really interact with the world around them in little gestures and movement. Not the same animation for running up stairs that still just looks like walking up a slight incline, for example.
More interesting concepts for, and originality in games; better use and implementation of the dualsense's capability. 2 things Sony should have been strides ahead with, but seems like fun ideas went out with the PS3.
I can't help but think this kind of corporate inclusion for the sake of it is going to become more popular over time. As others have mentioned; Fortnite, or CoD, have been long at this already, by including everyone from pop stars, to Marvel to legacy characters from whatever other series. Seems no space is sacred from just shovelling novelty 'figures' into any form of entertainment, in a desperate bid to appeal to everyone and anyone. May as well bring over Peggy Mitchell, while you're at it.
The 2nd hand market is sure to look a lot more attractive, if the price of games goes up higher. But who's going to buy them in the first place, to trade them in? Some of last year's biggest releases, I've still yet to play, because they're all in the £50 region. I will simply wait, and spend my money on cheaper alternatives.
It wouldn't surprise me, somehow, if it just got shadowdropped. Bethesda need some good faith, if they're to ever finally release Elder Scrolls 6 to an actively interested audience. Maybe they've been working on it behind the scenes to test tech for the new game? On that note, with Microsoft all but signing over their games to PS5... does their exclusivity deal for ES6 still count? 🤔
