13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim (PS4)

Vanillaware's immaculate track record could have easily gone off the rails with 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim — a visual novel and strategy hybrid that's a far cry from the action RPGs that the studio has become known for. But the finished product is arguably the developer's most impactful game yet. Fantastic characters and a an utterly gripping narrative make 13 Sentinels a borderline masterpiece in terms of storytelling. A genuine treat for your eyes and your brain.

Alan Wake 2 (PS5)

Remedy Entertainment has followed up on the beloved Alan Wake with a more-than-worthy sequel. Alan Wake 2 goes all-in on survival horror, but it also goes all-in on Remedy's particular brand of weird, blending live action with gameplay, taking unexpected turns, and making lots of creative risks. The result is an atmospheric, unpredictable, and fascinating game of two halves. Whether you're playing as Saga Anderson in the real world or Alan in the dark place, it remains captivating throughout — and looks incredible to boot.

Arizona Sunshine VR 2 (PS5)

Despite some technical letdowns, Arizona Sunshine 2 is still a joyous celebration of zombie brain-bashing. It features some of the best VR shooting on the market, with a reload mechanic that is incredibly satisfying and really brings to light what makes the platform so great in the first place. As a sequel, it improves graphically, narratively, and just controls a whole lot better. With a solid campaign offering, various difficulties, and a horde mode with more maps to come, Arizona Sunshine 2 is the full VR package — and an absolute must-buy for PSVR2 players.

Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure (PS5)

Arranger: A Role-Puzzling Adventure is a delightfully inventive puzzle game that weaves in a neat narrative to pull you through. Playing as a character that literally moves the world around her as she goes, this is effectively a series of slide puzzles set within a fleshed out world full of whimsical character. Always building on its core idea in imaginative ways, this is brilliant fun from start to finish.

Avowed (PS5)

Avowed is arguably Obsidian's strongest modern release, and it's not for the reasons that you may think. While the game's writing and storytelling often lack bite and excitement, its gameplay saves the day with a cracking combat system, meaningful player choice, and the enjoyable exploration of some truly stunning locales.

Baldur's Gate 3 (PS5)

Baldur's Gate 3 is a role-playing masterclass in almost every aspect that matters. At its best, it's one of the most deeply engaging RPGs you'll ever play, and even though its methodical pacing won't be for everyone, it sets the bar so high in terms of player freedom. Forging your own path to the infamous city of Baldur's Gate makes for a truly memorable journey, stacked with fantastic characters and superb storytelling. A defining example of its genre.

Ball X Pit (PS5)

Ball X Pit is a dangerously addictive roguelite that combines the speedy runs and rapid leveling up of Vampire Survivors with the ball-bouncing action of Breakout. It's one of those concepts that'll make you question why a game like it hasn't been done before, because it works brilliantly. Every element of the game feeds into something else, and the result is this incredibly compelling game that has a surprising amount to see and do.

Battle Chef Brigade Deluxe (PS4)

Battle Chef Brigade Deluxe is the definitive version of this unusual but great culinary adventure. Set in a world where chefs go head-to-head in a prestigious cooking tournament, the game is half action title and half cooking minigames. You'll go out slaying monsters and harvesting ingredients, then brew them up to create delicious dishes to satisfy the judges. It's an odd recipe, but results in a surprisingly tasty dish.

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night (PS4)

Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night is a wonderful love letter to Castlevania fans. It's gothy, camp, and unabashedly old school. But it's also a meticulously crafted game that constantly rewards players for exploration and offers unbridled options in combat. For long-time Metroidvania fans, Ritual of the Night is an unmissable celebration of the genre from the mind of one if its chief architects, while for newcomers it's an accessible entry-point that's easy to pick up and oh so difficult to put down.

Cairn (PS5)

There have been climbing games before, but Cairn is a really unique example. To scale the huge Mount Kami, you need to control Aava's limbs individually, looking out for the best holds as you inch upward. On top of the challenging, physics-based mountaineering, you also need to keep on top of her health and hunger, but these survival aspects never feel too overbearing. It's a nicely balanced game with climbing that feels tangible and realistically tough.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered (PS4)

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered brings one of the best and most influential first-person shooters to PS4. Though it shows its age somewhat these days, the game's single-player campaign is still fantastic, with some particularly breathtaking moments still holding up very well. The multiplayer is preserved here, too, and is arguably the best part. Again, it's been bettered in the years since, but there's no denying just how much the online functionality of this title changed the landscape. It's still a lot of fun, and there's a certain charm to its simplicity.

Chicory: A Colorful Tale (PS5)

If you're looking for a breather after those big, violent blockbusters, Chicory: A Colorful Tale is a perfect antidote. This charming indie game will pull you in with its adorable characters and cartoonish aesthetic, but it pairs all that with compelling gameplay and a touching story. You wield a magical brush with which you can paint the environment however you see fit, and you'll also use colour to solve puzzles and even fight bosses, solo or in co-op. An imaginative and heartfelt game.

Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (PS4)

Remember Crash Bandicoot? The madcap marsupial makes a grand return on PS4 in Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, a remake of his first three adventures. The games may be relatively old, but they've been brought up to modern standards with colourful graphics and updated gameplay. There's lots of fun to be had across this trio of platformers, with hours and hours worth of tricky levels to run through.

Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled (PS4)

A wonderful recreation of the PS1 original, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled is a real blast from the past. Drift boosting through beautifully rebuilt tracks in the generous Adventure mode or taking the racing online is a lot of fun. Much like the PS1 title it's based on, this is an arcade racing game with tight controls, surprising difficulty, and lots to see and do. Despite some areas that could've done with modernising, this is probably just about the best kart racer on PS4.

Days Gone Remastered (PS5)

Days Gone Remastered changes Bend Studio’s underappreciated open world in more ways than you’d expect. With a new lighting engine, the tension is significantly amplified, while the new Horde Assault mode allows you to focus on the release’s most enjoyable moments: those white-knuckle face-offs against hundreds upon hundreds of Freakers.

Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition (PS5)

We were tempted to just quote the entirety of Vergil's 'Bury the Light' theme here, but that would deny us an opportunity to rave about Devil May Cry 5: Special Edition on PS5. Simply put, this is an exceptional action game. It's Capcom at its absolute best, having crafted one of the greatest combat systems to ever grace the genre. In Special Edition, Vergil is the star of the show; unbelievably fun to play as and immaculately designed. This PS5 re-release also allows for instantaneous load times, a slew of graphics options, and the incredible Legendary Dark Knight mode.

Dishonored: Definitive Edition (PS4)

Arkane's debut game, Dishonored, remains one of its best, and this Definitive Edition lets you play an optimal version. Casting you as a supernatural assassin in a corrupt world, you get to explore a series of vast, open stages that really let you approach them in your own way. A combination of excellent mission design, a flexible suite of powers and weapons, and an intriguing story make for a true modern classic. The Definitive Edition finishes it all off with improved visuals and all the game's DLC, making for a great package.

Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition (PS4)

Refining the tone of its writing and delivering a much better paced story, Divinity: Original Sin II is a huge improvement on an already great role-playing experience. Character creation is meaningfully in-depth, and every action throughout your adventure further defines your hero. As far as player choice goes, Larian's sequel is one of the very best titles on PS4, and the many paths that you can take make it a brilliantly replayable package.
