Halo: Campaign Evolved is a “heroic” remake of an iconic game, and it’s available for the first time on PS5. (Although it may not be setting the sales charts alight, according to early estimates.)
Now with the project out of the door, it’s time for the Xbox grim reaper to hit the people that made it with a round of layoffs. It must be fun finishing projects at Microsoft, eh?
To be fair, dev Halo Studios has yet to actually acknowledge the redundancies, although LinkedIn is filled with testimonials of former staffers who’ve lost their job a week after the game’s release.
“After 6.5 years working on Halo and dodging just as many rounds of layoffs – it has finally caught up to me,” producer Nick Treitman wrote, as spotted by Eurogamer.net.
“I have nothing but love for Halo and the folks at the studio, this is just a tough reality in the gaming industry right now.”
Xbox laid off 1,600 staff earlier this year, but said it’d cut a further 1,600 jobs throughout the coming fiscal year, as it wrestles with a balance sheet very much in the red.
I hate to speculate on these things, but it strikes me it’s keeping some teams together while they finish off their projects, with the axe looming once said games are out of the door.
Would any of you be surprised if The Coalition faced job losses following the release of Gears of War: E-Day, for example? Or Playground once it’s wrapped up Fable early next year?
