Sony has emailed out about a new public beta branch of the PS5 system software, allowing participants to trial upcoming new features before they launch for everyone.
If you're part of the beta programme, you can download and install the new version right now. But what does it do?
Well, the main addition this time is related to PS5 Pro's PSSR tech.
In this beta firmware, the setting 'Enhance PSSR Image Quality' is now enabled by default for PS5 Pro owners.
If you're unaware, this setting means the console's enhanced PSSR (PSSR 2.0) will be used across all games that support the older version of PSSR.

So, even if a game hasn't officially been updated to support the latest iteration of PSSR, it'll still be put to use and will result in better image quality.
The other main point for this beta firmware introduces a new setting related to Bluetooth on PS5 and PS5 Pro.
Only applicable "in certain countries or regions", you can go into the console's settings and turn off Bluetooth, which Sony stresses is for the sole purpose of "managing controller connections at esports venues and similar locations."
Here are the official patch notes:
- We've turned on Enhance PSSR Image Quality as a default setting. When you update the system software, this setting automatically turns on. When you enable this feature, enhanced PSSR is used even for games that support the previous version of PSSR so you can enjoy a sharper and clearer visual experience.
- To turn off this setting, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Enhance PSSR Image Quality.
- This feature is available only on PS5 Pro.
- We’ve changed the following features for PS5 consoles and PS5 Pro consoles in certain countries or regions.
- If you go to Settings > Accessories > General > Advance Settings and select Turn Off Bluetooth, you’re no longer able to put your console into rest mode. Additionally, HDMI link is no longer supported when you select Turn Off Bluetooth.
- The Turn Off Bluetooth function is for managing controller connections at esports venues and similar locations. Do not use this feature for any other purpose.
- We've improved system software performance and stability.
I've installed the beta firmware on my PS5, and haven't yet discovered any other "hidden" features or changes. If I do, I'll update the article.

Didn’t this feature exist before? I understand the patch notes differently: „PSSR 2 upgrade“ is now the default setting.
Please correct mr if I‘m wrong!
Pretty sure this (the PSSR thing) was already a thing though? Sounds like they're just making it on by default now.
The Bluetooth setting was also there already (I used it myself in the past) - what they changed is that it now additionally prevents the console from going to sleep in some situations (which makes sense for events)
RE PSSR2
I don't think you have this quite right.
This functionality already exists to upgrade to PSSR2 any game running old versions of PSSR.
What the update appears to do is to turn the toggle on by default - previously, for some unknown reason, I think the toggle was off by default and needed enabling.
I always have this on, as it tends to offer an excellent upgrade in visual quality.
Apologies, I misread the patch notes Article amended.
Has anyone tested how the PSSR compares against DLSS and FSR4? I don't get why sony chose to deviate from amd's tech that rapidly improves.
So this basically pointless update for ps5 pro users as its mote effort to download this beta than it is to just go and switch by default. I would also guess that most ps pro users would have done this anyway.
@zebric21
I believe PSSR2 is basically a version of whatever the latest version of FSR4 is, but using a different AI type, due to hardware differences.
Everything I have seen / read suggests PSSR2 compares very favourably with FSR4, as you would expect given that Sony / Mark Cerny have been involved in both.
That’s really nothing. Installed the beta but it’s not worth it.
@Voltan exactly this. There’s nothing new.
@zebric21 pssr came out before fsr 4 and AMD and Sony worked together to create it, pretty sure the efforts went in to creating pssr was transferable to fsr4 as fsr4 was released not too long after pssr. Pssr is likely equal to or better than.
There are definitely sources of info on the net which explains how pssr was crucial in fsr 4 development
@Max_the_German you didn't even read or try to understand this article at all. They never said it was a new feature, the feature was never enabled by default, you had to go out of your way to enable it as it could induce bugs. They have now made the setting default to turned on (I'm assuming due to pssr improvements they're confident in enabling it by default)
@Max_the_German The feature isn't new. The only change is that it's turned on by default. Before the firmware update goes through, you need to turn it on manually.
@zebric21 I haven't done any tests, but I'm pretty sure that PSSR is technically AMD tech, in that it's a joint collaboration between AMD and Sony, so whatever advancements they're making internally, they're probably sharing to some extent with PSSR.
@tclarke90 Bro, chill out. Max was asking an innocent clarifying question. No need to tear into him.
@zebric21 There are quite a few Digital Foundry videos comparing various upscalers. Hmmm I’m not sure what you mean regarding AMD. They were not making any meaningful progress on their own product. Sony decided to push ahead independently which ended in a joint collaboration. FSR 3 and 4 are quite different, FSR 3 relies on conventional non-AI algorithms for edge detection and pixel blending. FSR 4 uses machine learning models built to leverage dedicated AI accelerators like FP8 found natively on newer architectures (like RDNA 4). PSSR 2 and FSR 4 stem from the same core algorithmic foundation developed via Sony and AMD’s joint machine learning collaboration.
They are co-developing further if you look into project amethyst.
