It’s so rare we get meaningful sales data from publishers, unless a title has performed exceptionally well. But we found this accidentally uploaded information from SEGA fascinating, because it actually clues us in to the real-world performance of a number of titles.
Here’s all of the data, as archived by ResetEra:
- Persona 5 Royal (including Remaster version): 7.25m
- Sonic Frontiers: 4.57m
- Team Sonic Racing: 3.50m
- Total War: Three Kingdoms: 3.21m
- Yakuza: Like a Dragon: 2.86m
- Sonic Superstars: 2.43m
- Total War: Warhammer III: 2.34m
- Shin Megami Tensei V (including Vengeance): 2.11m
- Persona 3 Reload: 2.07m
- Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth: 1.66m
- Like a Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name: 0.96m

The following numbers were also officially confirmed by SEGA, accurate as of 31st March, 2025:
- Sonic X Shadow Generations: 2.3m
- Metaphor: ReFantazio: 2.0m
The first thing we thought of here was Final Fantasy 16, which has been very publicly derided as a sales disaster. Of course, budgets and expectations differ between projects, but its three million units on a single platform in just a few days doesn’t look bad at all when put into the context of these multiformat releases.
While we wouldn’t have expected spin-off title Like a Dragon: The Man Who Erased His Name to have performed particularly well, the full-scale sequel Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth looks a bit disappointing at just 1.66 million units sold.
It’s also interesting to see the power of Sonic: we’d never have expected Team Sonic Racing, a game which feels like it never really got much recognition and love, to have done so well. It’s also good to see Sonic Frontiers rewarded, as it does feel like a viable blueprint for the Blue Blur moving forwards – although we suspect that game relied on heavy discounting to sell so many copies.
Fascinating stuff, nonetheless. Obviously, like we alluded to earlier, all projects have different budgets and expectations associated with them, so you can’t read too much into what’s a success and what’s not. But it’s still quite intriguing to see the numbers laid bare like this.

It's also interesting to see Sonic Superstars sell 2.43 million copies when SEGA literally called its sales a disappointment.
But good I guess.
So Final Fantasy 16's sales can now be considered a success if its keeping up with Sonic. Also missing a few titles from this list like Persona 5 Tactica and Unicorn Overlord, surely they sold more than a mil.
For some reason, I find these numbers hard to believe. Are these console specific? Region specific? (Sega) Store specific?
It was previously mentioned that the entire "Like a Dragon" franchise sold more than 20 million copies. I doubt the Yakuza series is counted amongst that.
@Thrussted Why wouldn't the Yakuza games count towards the "Like A Dragon" sales? It is the same series, they just renamed it in the west. In Japan they're all known as "Ryū Ga Gotoku"
@Milt obviously 2+ million is a good number, but if the company is expecting to sell 3+ million then it’s going to be a disappointment.
Final Fantasy 16 was made with a far bigger budget than Metaphor or Persona, so I wouldn't really say that comparing their sales makes a lot of sense. Final Fantasy is technically supposed to be way more popular than Persona. Two million units sold for a mid-budget game may be good, but three million units for a big-budget game may be disappointing. Both can be true at the same time.
Also, Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth is selling at a faster rate than Yakuza: Like a Dragon, so it seems to be doing decently.
More scary for me is RGG and Atlus clearly have stalled growth. They should be doing a lot better based off the competition and that too with a mega ultra multiplatform strategy that includes last gen as well. As I said in a comment before they're risking UBI-fication with the annual releases.
Also, Astro Bot doing 1.5 mil in 9 weeks is massive by comparison.
Edit: maybe the Gamepass effect for P3R and Yakuza games?
@Questionable_Duck EA wanted 3 mil for Veilguard and that was multiplatform so for a Japanese dev (much lower salaries), a less troublesome development and on a single console with 40 mil owners at the time 3.5 million looks incredible and makes me question how bad their overheads are.
If these are accurate, it really does give a lot of perspective to the industry and would show just how successful Square and Capcom have been by comparison. Final Fantasy 16’s got to be close to those P5 numbers by this point and will certainly fly past it, if that rumored Switch 2 port is coming soon. Also, this shows just how much of a phenomenon Dragon Quest is in comparing DQ3’s sales to any of these titles, given it’s basically an NES game.
…and it also goes to show that the YouTube community hasn’t exactly helped Metaphor or Like a Dragon explode the way that Clair Obscur did. I honestly thought they both would’ve sold more. Sort of gives context to Astro Bot being a strong seller, despite a seemingly low number being celebrated, also makes more sense.
This data just clarifies a lot of things, honestly.
Why can't RGG just do a standalone free hub for all the Club Sega arcade titles and any you own would be included in it, or buy titles standalone like Capcom stadium, marketing folks puzzle me, honestly.
@somnambulance it also makes the Sony tent pole numbers genuinely insane.
I'm kinda surprised some of the Like a Dragon titles are at those numbers, I thought they'd be higher.
Kind of always expected Like a Dragon series and Atlus titles could not have been as mainstream appealing as media made it out to be. Honestly, I can have fun with Like a Dragon game, but will almost always (except maybe Judgment subseries) wait for it to appear on a subscription. Atlus games I just don't understand the buzz of (and I see myself as an average consumer).
@Questionable_Duck it's not a matter of 2m vs 3m. Ff16 sold 3m in a week, Fantazio 2m Lifetime.
As someone with a Sonic-obsessed niece I'm not surprised to see the high hedgehog numbers. She wants the games even though she struggles to finish them (funnily enough her favourite to play by far is Team Sonic Racing.) and I am sure there are quite a few other kids like her.
To one publisher, 2.3 million is “amazing”. To some others, 2.3 million is considered and abject failure and 50 people must lose their jobs.
@EchoesOfBafflement man she would’ve loved the good sonic games back in the day even more like adventure 1 & 2, heroes, and sonic riders. but sega don’t make em like they used to
@cainhurst94 It goes to show how successful some of their games are… and wow, Mario Kart… Minecraft… GTA…
Shame on you all for not getting the Like a Dragon games. The best gaming franchise of all time. Get those numbers up, we need this series to never end.
Sonic superstars sales isn't bad, it isn't mario but 2M+ sales for 2D platforming games is good I think.
"Infinite Wealth looks a bit disappointing at just 1.66 million units sold."
I can't quite agree. Yakuza 7 has been available for purchase for several more years, and most people are going to play it first before it's direct sequel. These aren't the old days when games would only sell for as long as stores could hold the shelf space for them, digital stores allow any game to have a long tail of revenue.
Looking at the spreadsheet showing these games sales over time, IW is doing about as well launch aligned (Y7 wasn't a simultaneous global launch so it's Japanese and International launches are split between two fiscal years).

@Milt I think Sega's problem was they were comparing it to Frontiers selling 3 million in a few months. Obviously comparing a side scroller to an open worlder is a fools errand. It should be compared to Mania, which took a year to break a million at a third of the average price point. Superstars selling approximately 2.5 million in a year and a half while being more expensive and not as good as it's predecessor can only be considered a financial success.
7 million for Royal is pretty wild.
@HammerKirby3 Add in vanilla P5 and it's a 10 million plus seller. Absolutely crazy.

Doesn't really mean much unless you can see other Studio sales numbers. Who are we to know what is good or bad? All we have is speculation. It's interesting like but that's it, as much as people here might really like these games, they are not that popular to the masses. This is Sega ffs
Square Enix are delusional.. maybe people just don’t like their games as much as they used to, but 3 million is actually a brilliant amount considering it was just a PS5 game for so long..
Anyway, on topic it really is great to see Sega post such great sales figures. I have been a fan of Sega since the Master System and the pain of watching the incredible Dreamcast die so soon when it was leagues ahead of its time was terrible!! I hope their numbers keep steady and secure them for years to come!
@Milt Makes one wonder how well Sonic Mania sold.
@somnambulance
I don't think FF16 sold as much as you think it did. But I agree that a Switch 2 version could help it a lot.
@thefourfoldroot1 I think a lot of people got franchise fatigue with how Sega pumped out new Yakuza title one after another and they released it closed to each other too. In the span of 5 years, Sega released Yakuza 3-5 remastered, Yakuza Ishin remastered, Y8, Gaiden, Pirate Hawaii, and 0 Directors Cut. That's 8 games and i'm not counting Lost Judgement and Judgement remastered.
I mean, one Yakuza game alone worth at least 40-50 hours of contents or can be up to 80-100+ hours if you're a completionist who hunt for platinum trophy. Some people took their time to finish an RPG / open world game but when they're not yet done, Sega already released a new one.
I think Sega needs to slow down with how they milked Yakuza franchise.
@Lup FF16 was the second game this generation on PS5 that everyone I knew that plays games bought it, so if sold well, I’d believe it, or else my friend group has more niche tastes than I imagined. Elden Ring and Marvel Rivals are the only other two games that have been played by everyone on my friends list, at least during the PS5 era, with Rebirth and HFW being really close.
It did get a reported 3 mil sold pretty early on though. I imagine it’ll hit 7 mil with a Switch 2 version.
Team Sonic Racing was a PS Plus title in March 2022, I'd be surprised if that alone didn't contribute to a million of those sales at least, and it's actually a decent kart racer to boot.
@naruball Sure, but it all depends on the sales expectations and the profitability of each game. FF16 may seem way more successful than Metaphor when you compare their sales numbers like that, but you have to bring context into account.
FF16 is the latest mainline installment in the popular Final Fantasy franchise, the last game of which (FF15) sold 5 million units in a single day. FF16, in comparison, failed to reach that sales number, only selling 3 million in a week. Since it was released nearly a decade later, FF16 also probably had a considerably larger budget than FF15.
Metaphor, meanwhile, is a completely new IP that, unlike FF16, has stylized anime graphics instead of a photorealistic aesthetic. 2 million copies in a year may be more successful for Metaphor than 3 million copies in a week is for FF16.
I still remember a comment from this very site that said Persona 3 would be the 2024 February game that would make the most money. The comment was made to trash on Sony for funding SE FF7.2 but little they knew they weren't ready ... FOR DEMOCRACY!!!!
@Orpheus79V Yea that puts it probably the best selling non Pokemon and FFVII JRPG I feel like
@PuppetMaster
Maybe, I just can’t feel that.
I played all the mainline games back to back, plus the judgments, FoNS, Ishin and now started Pirate. Still working on Ishin plat but got plat on all the rest, meaning some of those games I played multiple times at 200+hrs. Fatigue hasn’t even been a thing for me in those circumstances. The games are just that good.

@mariomaster96 yes, I have to agree you are correct. As this is probably translated from a Japanese leak, it would stand to reason that it mentions Ryū ga Gotoku.
Removed - flaming/arguing
I can't believe the number of people suggesting if FFXVI sold more than Metaphor it must have been a success.
It takes one glance to see the budgets of the two games are not close to the same. Metaphor has a much cheaper aesthetic and relies on a lot of very repetitive dungeons. FFXVI is heavily reliant on expensive cinematics and action set pieces.
Selling 50% more doesn't mean squat if the game took 60% more to make. And if they made FFXVI cheaper there's no guarantee it would have sold the numbers it did.
The question for Square Enix is, if Metaphor is a success financially and FFXVI isn't, are they making the right kind of game? Could they make something less cinematic, less photorealistic that still sold well.
@somnambulance I think you greatly overestimate Final Fantasy's current popularity if you think FF16 could reach Persona 5's sales. Final Fantasy sales are very front loaded and with the brands fading popularity and failure to attract new younger audiences it's only destined to lose more relevance. FF16 barely sold on steam while P5 still makes it to the top sellers list whenever is goes on sale. The fact that Final Fantasy which is Square Enix's flagship franchise is being compared to a niche new JRPG from Atlus shows just how far the brand has fallen.
@ThomasHL Not to mention FF16 sold 3 million in a week, while FF15 sold 5 million in a day. Comparing the two games, it's no wonder that Square Enix was disappointed in FF16's sales.
@Deadlyblack This is very curious, as the Yakuza games are highly celebrated in comment sections while Sonic Team Racing sold considerably well and gets few mentions
@somnambulance @LofiPie27 I think release pacing will be a big challenge regarding sales of an individual title. Tactics in September, FF7 Remake in winter, Rebirth probably in 2026, the 3rd part could be early 2027 coinciding with the PS1 game’s anniversary. Add in the elusive FF9 Remake somewhere and you may end up with a FF release approximately every 3 months, for example:
@LofiPie27 Could be true, but I’m also not certain how PC focused the FF fanbase is. The FF base, to my knowledge, has largely been console based and I’d imagine, even PC-based fans may have purchased on console due to exclusivity. The only reason I feel like we use Steam sales as an indicator of sales overall is because Steam is the largest PC platform and they publish data. We never know the breakdown between consoles and Steam unless it’s only on two storefronts.
Also, wouldn’t say Metaphor is a niche RPG. It was definitely one of the most advertised games in 2024 and was a GotY contender (and winner in various circles). It’s an Atlus RPG. Atlus makes Sega’s premier JRPGs.
@Questionable_Duck FXV shipped 5m for day one, that’s very different when you go back a decade and physical was the prominent distribution method. You’d need to ship way more than you expect to sell in the first few weeks.
What would’ve been better is if we got numbers from the various consoles and pc to compare.
In an alternate universe Sonic Mania 2 sold 20m.
@Grumblevolcano I dunno if pacing issues will be a problem, especially since we know nothing of the FF9 remake and nothing of FF7 part 3. I expect Tactics will sell well, but Remake and 16 will sell more broadly on Switch. I think it’s possible the FF games may end up selling best on Switch 2, given how much the Japanese market has shifted.
Refantazio 2M Sega and atlus are celebrating FF16 3M probably a little bit more by now SE still complaining ffs as a big fan of dmc ff16 was magical for me i understand the "hate" because "is not a real ff game" well ff doesn't mean needs to be turn based you still have dq series i love this ff16 me only problem is the lack of party members
@Grumblevolcano take xbox out because none of those games will sell on xbox
@SeaDaVie Still, though, that "5m shipped in 24 hours" figure includes both physical copies and digital sales, according to Wikipedia. The game also basically broke even on its first day, and it had the best console launch month in the Final Fantasy franchise's history.
I can't really say this for a fact, since I don't know the budget for the game, but it's possible that FF16 did not instantly break even in a day, like FF15 did.
@John_Deacon Maybe it's because kids mostly bought Team Sonic Racing, and there aren't a lot of kids who use sites like Push Square. Whereas the Yakuza series is played more by adults, so you see it discussed more often on social media.
You also have to figure that the sales numbers for Persona/Atlus/Yakuza games aren't too bad, since they reuse a lot of assets across many games. Obviously, RGG's upcoming game will cost a lot, since it looks like they're doing a new engine/new assets, but it's clear that Pirate Yakuza/Yakuza 7 and Infinite Wealth all used similar settings. So, they cut back costs a good bit in not needing to develop a whole lot of new assets there.
Interesting. Yakuza is about where I imagined although I am surprised Infinite Wealth isn't a little higher. Gaiden should be higher because it rules.
Everybody play Yakuza.
Shoutout to Persona 5 Royal though.
My first console was a master system 2 with Alex Kidd built in. I was 4 at the time. My oldest memory!. seeing it for the first time at Christmas 1989 happy days. Haven’t touched a sega console or game since the mega drive though
@thefourfoldroot1 Until they go back to brawler style gameplay, I'm good. I dont like LAD7 and 8's turn based gameplay and not what I came to the yakuza series for. It's also why Im still waiting for Judgment 3.
@Anya-chan It's really never made sense to me that turn based is what makes FF a FF game considering FF is essentially a concept and every game is in its own universe. Doesnt even make any sense to have it be numbered.
@Nepp67
Have you played Pirate Yakuza? That’s back to the brawler gameplay, which I admit I prefer also.
Still, it’s the world and its stories, as well as the varied gameplay/side-missions that sets it apart.
It seems strange for Infinte Wealth to hit only 1.66m, beacuse they officially celebrated million copies sold in the first week. And then, there were many price drops and sales which obviously should beef up the sales.
@Nepp67 not every ff needs to turn based thats my opinion for a long time SE abandoning the numbers they already said something like in relation to the inevitable ff17 i like the numbers but thats me ppl can say "why ff16 has a number looks more like a spin off" but look at ff12 none of them are tied there are some references here and there but in general i like the numbers
Just a side note im still pissed that agnis philosophy didn't became a main entry 😒😒
Hoping Project Century does better in sales. Stranger than heaven or something. Big fan of RGG, so will be buying every game from them, except Pirates and virtua fighter. Also a fan of ATLUS, but I won't buy every game from them.
@thefourfoldroot1 Genuinely that one didnt quite interest me due to how goofy it looked. I like the goofy part of Yakuza, just not when there's too much of it. If there's a demo of it Ill a give it a try though
@Jrs1 There have been rumours about them doing a retro streaming service for ages. Given the mysterious delisting of their own internal titles (which are not 'expired' and the lack of extra games for the Switch Mega Drive app it's only a matter of when, not if.
This are great numbers happy to see them being profitable. I wish they would slow down with the Yakuza/Like a Dragon releases. The most hardcore fans might be buying every game that was released in the last 5 years but for the average consumer, it's a bit too much to keep up which is most likely the reason why sales are slowing down.
I wish we would have gotten sales figures of other SEGA franchises like Sakura Wars or Valkyria Chronicles though.
Would also love how much Unicorn Overlord sold.
Also compared to FFXVI this sales are definitely a success since they are more niche than the Final Fantasy franchise and XVI's budget was much higher than any SEGA game released recently.
I say this again. Square Enix needs to lower the budget for the next FF games
There is only one game that met Square Enix's high expectations in recent years and that is a HD-2D Remake of Dragon Quest III.
@Nepp67 "considering FF is essentially a concept and every game is in its own universe. Doesnt even make any sense to have it be numbered."
Most Final Fantasy fans played the games when they were turn based and the concept part is not true, FF1-9 are more similar to each other than the games that came after.
FF didn't start to change the formula until FFX.
And FF games weren't different universes until IX, before FFIX all games were supposed to be set in the same world.
I agree though that from XI onwards the games shouldn't be numbered.
@Questionable_Duck These 5 million day 1 sales were also because of the Versus XIII hype. XV disappointed a lot of people so much that they had no interest in XVI and didn't bought it.
@somnambulance From what I read I doubt FFXVI sold 4 million copies by now.
I do believe that will change once the game releases on Switch 2 though.
@Jacko11 there is no need to be mean. Half the comments on here are speculation based on personal perspectives and limited knowledge (mainly because the information is not readily available so people have to speculate).
So, there is no need to mock someone just because they got something wrong about a language they don’t speak. You could have corrected in a nicer way.
@Thrussted don’t let them bring you down.
@Kienda why did you make this sound like I was being racist at the end, such a weird way of writing 😂
This discussion about ff16.. i think it's pretty obvious that Squex has lost it's FF crowd right?
FF used to be cool games, innovative but the core of the game was always relatively the same. In ff16 they went completely overboard with that, ditched anything that makes an FF game an FF game and pretty much just made a cinemactic action game that only resembles FF in it's title.
Add to that, that for whatever reason they had their MMO team make it (and it shows, large parts of the game are very dull, where's the exploration etc.?) and it's no wonder a large part of the FF fanbase said 'no thank you'.
For the Sega numbers themselves, no idea how to interprete this. Some sales numbers are cool and all, but if we don't know what they spent on developing each game it's kinda meaningless
@Vyse_the_Legend Yeah that is definitely possible, I think FF15's release may have been a perfect storm, which FF16 didn't have
@RadioHedgeFund Nice, hope they venture past the 16bit era 👍
The "Like a dragon" series get talked up so big by the diehards, it makes it seem more popular a series than it is, I reckon.
I bought the original Yakuza years ago, (on ps2?) with zero knowledge, and was pleasantly surpised. But the games are dense, and the series is nigh impenetrable for newcomers now. Makes sense that they had to do a 'soft reboot', of sorts. Nevertheless, I can't help but feel like the only people buying these games are people already heavily invested in the series and story, but the games probably aren't picking up many new players.
@UltimateOtaku91 depends how much they spent making the game, i would assume final fantasy cost a lot more to make
@cainhurst94 100%. Look at The Man Who Erased His Name. It launched on Gamepass, and it's the only thing on the list to not crack a million
@Questionable_Duck I would argue FFXVI had Naoki Yoshida's name attached to it. Without him, FFXVI might have sold less.
None of this means literally anything without their respective budgets. These are all incredibly niche and not remotely as broadly loved as the diehards tend to paint it.
@Vyse_the_Legend "Most Final Fantasy fans played the games when they were turn based and the concept part is not true, FF1-9 are more similar to each other than the games that came after."
That doesn't take away from FF being a concept and also I never once heard FF 1 through 9 being set in the same universe, just that they have references to other games or the other being fan theories so I'm not sure I believe that.
@Nepp67 While this made me assume to be the case for VII and VIII as well.
Final Fantasy IV the After Years does indicate that at least that the first 6 mainline games are set in the same universe.
And I didn't say FFIX is set in the same universe as the other games before.
I said FF games weren't different universes until IX, meaning the concept of different worlds started with IX.
Square did consider making IX a spin-off instead a mainline during development.
Well goodness. I am more impressed by the RgG support now. Especially on other platforms.
