The upcoming TV show adaptation of the God of War franchise from Amazon has confirmed it's bringing the father and son story of Kratos and Atreus to the streaming service, where it looks to "honour" the Norse era games.
As part of an interview with IGN, executive producer Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek) shares the TV series looks to emulate the tone of the game, pointing to the journey Kratos and Atreus take to pay their respects to their wife and mother.
Moore continued: "So it has this emotional heart, but there's this sense of history of who Kratos is, this mystery about his past, what he represents, the emotions that he's going through. So there's a weight to it, but not so much weight that there's not enjoyment along the way and there's spectacle and there's lots of things going on in this world."
Given the plot focus on Kratos and Atreus, it's confirmed the Amazon TV show will adapt the events of the Norse era titles, so the God of War entry from 2018 and then the more recent God of War Ragnarok. As for the games that form the Greek saga, Moore teases that you'll just "have to wait and see" if any references crop up.
Serving as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project, Moore continues to try and play the PS5, PS4 games. He's watched all the cutscenes, but when it comes to actually playing the titles, Moore says he lacks "he muscle memory of my thumbs. And so Kratos is fighting the troll and I'm constantly like, okay, which one's the B button? No, I'm dead. It is that kind of thing. But I try."
However, he "grew up in the arcade era, so I can bang away, just give me a Defender console or an Asteroids console, I'll kick your ass".
Amazon has already greenlit two seasons of its God of War TV show, which restarted production late last year. Sony is also working with Amazon Prime on a Horizon TV series, while the streaming platform has already very successfully adapted Fallout. In the video game world, a 2.5D Metroidvania game set in the God of War universe is rumoured to be in development.

Would of much preferred the Greek side first without atreus and if the casting is the rock jason mamoa or vin diesel it's over already
@Bsb56 It'll be Pedro Pascal. He seems to be in everything else nowadays.
@Bsb56 Yeah, does beg the question - why not just start at the beginning 🤔....That, and Greek mythology is much more fascinating than Norse imo 🙂
The thing that make Kratos story in Norse saga emotional is because it's Kratos redemption arc. His relationship with his new family are so important is because he lost his daughter and wife by his own hands in Greek saga. So to start the show with Norse saga just doesn't makes sense.
But eh, i don't expect someone from Amazon gonna respect the source material or understand the point of the series especially when the producer only watched the game cutscenes and didn't played it because his thumb "lack muscle memories" 🙄
Oh well
@LifeGirl better not be, or he gotta start taking mass amounts of roids, just get that Dutch giant to play him cant remember his name, but Google youll see him. He was also in seaon 3 of Reacher
Depending on how many episodes per season and how long the episodes will be, I could definitely picture many seasons made of the Norse arc. Especially when it comes to God of War Ragnarok.
That is if it turns out to be actually fantastic👀
@Bsb56 You don't want the Greek games being adapted because they would suck under a TV sized budget.
@LifeGirl Yet people don't moan that William Dafoe has been in the same amount of films as Pedro in the past two films.
@IronCrow86 kratos is a much different person in the Greek mythology I just think doing flashbacks doesn't do it justice
@PuppetMaster Fun fact the person who made Andor doesn't like Star Wars. Fun fact Nolan had never read a Batman comic before doing Batman Begins. You're going to find most big creative's aren't video game players its just how it is. Finally did you watch Fallout? That was Amazon made and it was fantastic.
@DennisReynolds it's amazon look at there previous money spent on tv shows and tv show budgets are getting closer to movies nowadays
Yeah, the story of the Greek games is pretty bad, so it makes sense. Through flashbacks you can pick out the key moments and leave a lot up to the imagination and let people imagine the story was deep, nuanced and interesting.
they really don’t like the greek saga, huh. Angry one-note Kratos is too badass for TV, so, gotta get depressed dad for the emotional feels 😂
#NotMyKratos
@SeaDaVie blasphemous
I feel like the casting for this is going to be impossible, and that they should maybe just make it animated. Let's see.
All these crossovers are so lazy. Let games just be games etc. They’re made for a specific medium for a reason.
I don't have very high hopes for this, but unlike some, I am very pleased it focuses on Kratos/Atreus from the Norse saga - it may have a chance now.
The greek games were OK, but the story and Kratos were just very 1 dimensional, and I just don't see how this era makes a good TV series / film etc.
The redemption / family and legacy centered story of the norse saga was far superior and the characters now felt more real and far more likeable.
How has nobody picked up on the fact of the blatant fact that if he was looking for a "b" button, id like to know why he was playing it on PC in the first place 🤣
I hope they don't make a mess of it but am more optimistic since Fallout, that was brilliant and can't wait for season 2!
@Slideaway1983 I scrolled down to add a comment saying exactly that — thanks for 🅱️eating me to it! 😹
They should just stop. Gow doesnt work if you start with the norse saga. When will these fking clowns learn
God of War is one of my top 10 gaming series and I’ll reserve judgement until I see this come together. Those who are already passing judgement likely are setting themselves up to dislike it no matter what the final product looks like.
@Cry_Zero can easily work starting from Norse and flashing back to Greek. Wouldn’t be the first (or second, or 28th) time we’ve seen a character develop through flashbacks.
@Cry_Zero
Ron Moore was the showrunner and lead writer for shows like Battlestar Galactica and For all Mankind. I suspect he knows a thing or two about making a tv series.
@XanderTigerclaw can I.... can't i say 1st?! Oh no... ok then 🤣👍
@DennisReynolds While Nolan never read Batman comics before Batman Begins but David S. Goyer did. That's why Nolan hired Goyer to help him wrote the story for TDK trilogy and also to keep him not stray too far from the source material. Nolan in the end did read Batman comics and that's why TDK trilogy are one of the best superhero movies who respect and stick pretty close with the source matrerial.
And fun fact for you, Matt Reeves is a Batman fans and why The Batman is a very solid Batman movie. I think it's even slightly better than Nolan Batman Begins. Can't wait for Part 2.
As for Andor, i never watch it so i don't know if it's good or bad or if it stick with Star Wars lore. But i did watched Fallout and it's pretty good, although i'm not a Fallout fans and only played a bit of Fallout 3. So my judgement could be the opposite compare to what long time Fallout fans thinks for the show.
The thing is Amazon track record not always sunshine and rainbow. It's normal if i'm not convinced that Amazon would messed this adaptation. And compare to Star Wars or superhero comics where there's tons of reset and arc to use as source material, GoW Greek saga only had 6 games. So i don't see the harm for this producer to played those games in order to understand about the series and keep the show close to the source material. At least played GoW 1-3 before jump to the Norse saga.
Most likely the Greek era will be told via some flashbacks, maybe even allocate whole episode to it along the way, to detail a larger subject.
Curious to see the main cast. Most likely they'll go with some "fresher blood", none of the names that circulate around right now, like The Rock, Bautista, Vin Diesel etc - those are high caliber actors, they won't stoop to a very risky game based series that could damage their reputation. Besides, I doubt the show has the necessary funds to pay them.
@LifeGirl Could be worse. Like Chris Pratt.
It's just not possible to better the Norse saga games in another medium, especially TV. After the awful TLoU adaptation, I'd prefer they take the characters and world in an alternative direction rather than strictly following the source material. So long as they can emulate the feel of Kratos and the epic scale and brutality of that universe, it could be well worth it. Casting is crucial.
I’m so sick of these adaptations. Actual real TV shows are getting cancelled in favour of stuff like this.
Expectations are very low; just hope the next game - whatever it comes to be - delivers
@LifeGirl Let's hope not.
@AhmadSumadi it's just that when you really like or love something is hard not to make comparisons to that thing that made you fall in love with it; played my first god of war when i was like 11yrs old and obviously that grew with me over the years... Very happy to see Kratos getting into another platform just a bit afraid that happens the same as it did with Ellie;
I'd cry laughing if they gender swapped the characters and called it Goddess Of War.
@naruball At least Pedro Pascal's a good human being.
@Bsb56 Only TLOTR got that kinda budget and even then its massively scaled back compared to the films and books. GoW won't be getting that kind of budget.
@PuppetMaster Amazon are more hit then miss. Invincible, The Boys, Fallout, Batman The Caped Crusade and Reacher are all great adaptions.
Look fact is most creative in film/TV aren't video game players. Most don't have the time for them and most weren't part of a generation where VG were popular.
@DennisReynolds fallout budget was 140 plus
@Bsb56 Yeah that's not big nowadays.
Dumpster fire incoming the guy never played the series before and its directing this lol
Dude who's never played the game promises to 'honour' the very titles he can't play - but he's watched all the videos - and promises it isn't just a glorified franchise cash-in courtesy of Amazon's billionaire financier.
Yeeah, sorry; I don't have any hope for this, regardless of his professional credit. Why not put an actual gamer at the helm of the video game adaptation? Same reason why Cavill left the Witcher series, I suppose...
@DennisReynolds "Look fact is most creative in film/TV aren't video game players. Most don't have the time for them and most weren't part of a generation where VG were popular."
That's one if not the biggest problem why video games to live action adaptation has bad reputations for years. Not all but plenty of projects was handled by people who doesn't want to understand nor respect the source material.
I don't know the track record for this showrunner. So i can't give them the benefit of the doubt that they can do a good job to adapt my favorite game despite they can't play the game and only watched cutscenes.
And there's no mention about Cory Barlog involvement either, at least as superviser for the story / screenplay. So i would be really surprise if this tv show end up as good if not better than TloU tv show.
This might be one that just shouldn't be adapted to TV. The story of the Greek saga is pivotol to Kratos's development in the Norse saga, and knowing what he did beat for beat really emphasized the smaller moments of growth. After TLoU S2, I'm not particularly excited for another half baked yet also drawn out adaptation of a story we already know.
@HaveTheSauce I hear you. Myself, I don’t have much issue with Ellie. I know the actress took a whole lot of heat but the same guys who created the character went with the HBO version. I’ll admit I prefer the game version, but I don’t hate the film version. But there are a few characters I can say the TV version is better than the original game version.
@SeaDaVie exactly. Also, a great actor, imo, though there are many better options for Kratos.
If done right, it could be amazing. I'm cautiously optimistic.
@PuppetMaster To be fair, just by looking at sales figures it's clear most of the God of War fanbase now have only played the Norse games, so not much will be changing there sadly.
@Orpheus79V I just check the Greek saga games including remaster all combine sold around 28.4 million copies. Meanwhile the Norse saga games combine sold 38 million copies, which possiby 50% of those numbers came from fans who also played the Greek saga.
So i don't think the majority of GoW fanbase are newcomers who only played Norse games. Nonetheless, the Greek saga is important for Kratos story and like i said it doesn't make sense to start the show from Norse saga.
GoW 2018 was mythic, raw, and focused; Ragnarök feels like Marvel DLC with therapy dialogue. They swapped epic tension for emotional hand-holding. Good game, but the magic’s gone.
@PuppetMaster But that's also spread across 6 games and 3 re-releases vs 2 games. GoW 1 and 2 each sold approximately 5 million each, 3 sold 9 across both versions, Ascension and Chains at 3 million, Ghost at 1. Ragnarok sold over 15 million and 2018 over 23.
@SeaDaVie youre part of the problem if you think it just takes someone „who knows a thing or two about making a tv show“ lmfao
@AhmadSumadi thst would not work buddy. You obviously havent played the games. You cant show his character in simple flashbacks. Its not the same if we see him kill his family in a 30 minute flashback.
@Cry_Zero He's literally the "showrunner", a role performed for decades across some of the most successful shows made in that time. It's his job to put into effect all the conditions in order to make a good show.
What exactly is your expertise? No offence but from my perspective you look like a random dude on the internet with an anime avatar, and still uses the expression "lmfao" like it's 2004 and it's not utterly embarrassing to use.
@PuppetMaster the best selling Greek game was GoWIII at 5.2m and GoW(2018) sold 23m+. There were 6 Greek games so the total sales are mostly just double counting the same people over and over.
@SeaDaVie you still dont get it do you? I dont need to work in the business to know that its simply impossible. You cant cram 6 games into a 30 minute flashback. You dont need to be a genius to understand that there wont be the same impact like with the games. So you can dickride this dude as long as you please, youre wrong.
Save my comment and lets talk in a year or two when the show is finished. You can apologize then buddy boy.
@Cry_Zero you don't need to ram 6 years in! Even before the first game Kratos had been alive for decades, we didn't need to see every minute of that. See him be born and watch his whole life.
Story's start wherever you want, and can tell whatever story you want.
Star Wars starts in the middle of a galactic war. We don't need to see the entire history of it, or Luke as a baby growing up or the entire back story of Obi-Wan.
Thats how stories work.
@SeaDaVie star wars didnt delve thet deep into the character of vader in the original trilogy my guy. Vader was your typical bad guy. Kratos is not that simple. Its about his change over time. Thats not something you can just talk about. Well you can but it will fall flat. Wont have the same impact. Kratos trying to pad atreus on the back after his first kill wont have any emotional impact if we dont see kratos backstory. And again, flashbacks are not the same.
yeah you can if you want to tell any story thats not god of war. I have no idea why youre still arguing with me. Save my comment and lets talk when the show releases. Until then go talk your nonsesense somewhere else. Bye✌️
@Cry_Zero well the best selling Greek game is 5.2m units and GoW(2018) sold 23m copies so I guess that game fell flat for a lot of people, including all the people on Steam where the original games are not available. Oh wait, the game is a 96% on Steam and is one of the highest rated games of all time. lmfao.
@SeaDaVie
Yeah to everyone who played the newer ones, the story impact wasnt there. Its still a great game. Youre kinda mentally challenged arent you? Im not gonna reply to your ***** comments and terrible comparisons anymore guy.
i thought lmfao is utterly embarrassing to use?
@Cry_Zero That’s the joke, bro
@Cry_Zero First of all, I’ve played every single GOW game. Haven’t missed a single iteration. Second, if the show has 10–12 episodes, they can tell his origin story through flashbacks. They don’t need to tell the entire Greek story in the single season. They don’t even have to show that he killed his wife and daughter in the first season. And finally, take it down a notch, man. You’re far too hostile for no apparent reason.
@AhmadSumadi disagree with everything you said and im nit elaborating any further
Since this discussion makes no sense at all. And show me exactly where i was hostile towards you?
