God of War TV

The upcoming TV show adaptation of the God of War franchise from Amazon has confirmed it's bringing the father and son story of Kratos and Atreus to the streaming service, where it looks to "honour" the Norse era games.

As part of an interview with IGN, executive producer Ronald D. Moore (Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek) shares the TV series looks to emulate the tone of the game, pointing to the journey Kratos and Atreus take to pay their respects to their wife and mother.

Moore continued: "So it has this emotional heart, but there's this sense of history of who Kratos is, this mystery about his past, what he represents, the emotions that he's going through. So there's a weight to it, but not so much weight that there's not enjoyment along the way and there's spectacle and there's lots of things going on in this world."

Given the plot focus on Kratos and Atreus, it's confirmed the Amazon TV show will adapt the events of the Norse era titles, so the God of War entry from 2018 and then the more recent God of War Ragnarok. As for the games that form the Greek saga, Moore teases that you'll just "have to wait and see" if any references crop up.

Serving as a writer, executive producer, and showrunner on the project, Moore continues to try and play the PS5, PS4 games. He's watched all the cutscenes, but when it comes to actually playing the titles, Moore says he lacks "he muscle memory of my thumbs. And so Kratos is fighting the troll and I'm constantly like, okay, which one's the B button? No, I'm dead. It is that kind of thing. But I try."

However, he "grew up in the arcade era, so I can bang away, just give me a Defender console or an Asteroids console, I'll kick your ass".

Amazon has already greenlit two seasons of its God of War TV show, which restarted production late last year. Sony is also working with Amazon Prime on a Horizon TV series, while the streaming platform has already very successfully adapted Fallout. In the video game world, a 2.5D Metroidvania game set in the God of War universe is rumoured to be in development.
