Death Stranding was my second Kojima game after MGSV which I thoroughly enjoyed. It took me until 2022 to try DS but I ended up absolutely loving it (I mostly did the main quests only). His games aren't for everyone for sure but he's telling stories in his own unique fashion and DS was amazing if a little convoluted. It would make an epic miniseries with the right budget but I'm not sure it needs another game?
@jrt87 I'm admittedly not too far into Forbidden West yet but it's been underwhelming thus far with a lot of verbal hand holding (and generally lame dialogue) like the developer expected a lot of people new to the franchise. Zero Dawn was my favourite story of the last generation and didn't really need a sequel. It seems like I'm playing through a graphical showcase and not much more. I'm going to stick with it for now but it's somewhat of a disappointment.
All the above... PS4 was surely the strongest console generation thus far. We were completely spoilt for choice. My list would probably be thirty strong.
The main thing that has prevented me from playing recent Ubisoft RPGs is that they are set in the Assassin's Creed universe. They clearly have a talented development team despite perceived flaws in recent titles. Why can't they leave AC behind and come up with something original?! Saying that, I can't wait for the next Witcher saga, CD returning to their strong suit.
Yes please! Disco Elysium is the best game I've played in 2022 nudging out Elden Ring for that title. Hoping this comes even close to DE and it'll be a rare early purchase (after a patch or two such is gaming nowadays).
I'll give this a go but 20 hours isn't a perfect length for an indie game lacking combat variety in my opinion. Games in general are way too long and repetitive nowadays with few exceptions. I guess you get value for money if you enjoy the game however. Paying $60 for a 45 minute 16 bit game was a bit nuts looking back but some had great replayability value!
Rockstar is almost an afterthought for me nowadays. If they go in the multiplayer/online direction I'll be less interested but I may be in the minority in 2022. We have to understand there is a younger generation of gamers who eat up the online stuff and that's ok. If they update the mechanics and gameplay then I'll perhaps take a look. There is some excellent writing in the gaming industry today so Rockstar have their work cut out but you can guarantee they'll have an unbeatable soundtrack.
I had a dream that PSVR2 is compatible with Xbox Series X and Microsoft Flight Simulator. Or Flight Simulator came to PS5. Or I had a spare 4k for a serious PC rig. Hrmph.
I wrote to the developers politely asking for a difficulty/accessibility patch for those with arthritis in their hands or other handicaps that make this game impossible. No reply. I just love the old school animation style but I'm never getting past the opening area.
@Ryany In that case I'd consider myself to have lived through the golden years of gaming. Everything nowadays (not just games) seems to be leaning toward short attention spans and more of a distraction than fulfilling escapism. I've enjoyed a few live service games to be fair but it would be a shame to do away with all the other wonderful genres and types of games.
This could mean meaningful competition for the first time since the highs of Pro Evo. I'd be ok with the Konami team getting the rights to FIFA whether at Konami or ex Pro Evo devs.
You don't need HDMI 2.1 for VRR. HDMI 2.1 won't even come into it's own early this generation most likely as AAA games won't be running at 120fps in 4K (on consoles). Some online games and indie games will be the only beneficiaries. My TV has VRR and 120hz up to 1440p - it works brilliantly on the Series X. I hope Sony offers a 1440p option eventually but at this stage in the generation, many AAA games can't even hit 60fps with maximum fidelity settings.
@OrtadragoonX I can really relate to all that. For me it started with Halo 2 at University and the Lan parties where I'd meet friends of friends, sometimes in different countries when travelling and living abroad. You're spot on about staying in the same lobbies with the same people too. It's a shame they no longer work that way. The closest I've come to that was playing Warzone maybe 5 times a week during the height of the pandemic and then keeping in touch with friends of friends to this day. I'll still dip into Warzone here and there but with many friends having busy lives as parents now, it's becoming more of a seldom nostalgic treat for most of us hence my preference for good single player games. Finally and randomly, I'm a Brit living in the deep south!
Multiplayer games are great for a bit of mindless socializing with friends. Very very few, even the best co op games come close to the better single player experiences in my opinion. Going by the sales figures Sony amasses with it's exclusives, there is surely room for both for the foreseeable future. I'd argue the bulk of multiplayer games become a muscle memory situation hence the aforementioned 'mindless' description. I for one still want to be cerebrally challenged and enjoy a good story.
I've seen more bugs today post update than ever but hey. The game is finally a worthy product. Not Witcher 3 level but a really great Cyberpunk genre entry.
@BoldAndBrash Games are like TV now, you have to be discerning with your choices, there simply isn't enough time to play all the quality games out there. I'm trying my best but I've had to stop playing online and sports games in an effort to work through my backlog. It'll probably never get cleared entirely but hey.
@ShogunRok I'm finally enjoying the game on PS5 having owned it on PS4 but not touching it due to all the issues. My biggest takeaway however is that it feels dated in terms of certain gameplay mechanics - something it has in common with every Rockstar title in my opinion. No matter how good a story or the characters may be in these titles, 6/7 years in development ultimately leads to some aspects feeling dated by current gaming standards. Just an observation!
Needed Nathan Fillion and Powers Boothe in leading roles maybe 15 years ago. Films are increasingly for ADD kids and TV shows for adults nowadays. A generalisation maybe, but a pattern is emerging.
@Dezzy70 'Premium TV market'. Sony probably don't crack the top ten in most markets now. TCL are #2 in the US for example and have been there since 2017. Saying that if money was no object then a Sony OLED would still be my 1st choice despite their panels being made by LG.
Just a brilliant brilliant game and the very definition of replayable. While it may not be for everyone, for those on the fence I'd say go for it and maybe try 3-6 hours a week while enjoying other totally different games concurrently.
@Jimmer-jammer I came to Days Gone late via backwards compatibility on PS5. Brilliant game deserving of the PlayStation exclusive moniker. It doesn't need a sequel however and considering how talented Sony Bend clearly are, I'm more excited for new IP. Too many sequels and remakes out there nowadays. We need originality.
@PegasusActual93 Titanfall 2 had a very decent campaign too. I agree with your comment, Metro and Bioshock had good narratives and excellent immersion which almost put them in a category of their own but they are still FPS games in my opinion. I wouldn't say we've been spoiled for choice though. COD etc definitely do more harm to the genre than good with very little evolution between iterations and a heavy reliance on multiplayer to sell. I will admit Warzone was a revelation during the early days of the pandemic however!
This is becoming increasingly common. The Doom Eternal update made me re download the entire game recently. There must be a smarter way to do this because unless you have unlimited data/download with your provider...
You could certainly argue well received/reviewed games that have at minimum 10 hours of single player content are still worth $70. Multiplayer games or any you play for countless hours over months or years are certainly worth $70. Am I paying that much though? Nope. Patience is a virtue, especially with a backlog! I've had the PS5 since day one. My only purchase has been Disco Elysium. Looking forward to Returnal, Miles Morales, Rift Apart etc but I can wait.
DICE are wasted at EA. I'm sure Battlefield still has it's audience but how about some fresh FPS ideas and more importantly a quality single player or co-op campaign. Unfortunately multiplayer shooters are cash cows nowadays.
I'm sadly old enough to remember each in the series. The first two were the most unique, loved the graphics and abilities in the 1st game and the various attempts at realism and immersion in the 2nd. The 3rd was fun to play after having backpacked through South East Asia as was 4 but I don't have too powerful pangs of nostalgia for either. Blood Dragon was simple fun with all excellent 80's gloss (Michael Biehn!!!). Primal might actually be my favourite as I viewed it as more of a Paleolithic simulator and really enjoyed it despite not having an arsenal of modern weaponry. 5 could have been so much better had they not (understandably) shied away from overtly political tones but both this and New Dawn were immensely fun in co op. Just started 6, more of the same sure but gosh it's fun.
IGN have clearly tried to be inclusive by having some bang average contemporary games in the bracket over some legendary/pioneering ones but I can sort of understand that. What's harder to understand is why most respondents clearly seem to have been under 25 years of age. Some rather odd results but hey, opinions.
The thing is, GTA V is like a Disney classic. Young people come of age every year thus it's ongoing popularity. I'm fine with new versions as long as Rockstar are working on the next iteration behind the scenes which they surely must be. It's been a long time coming but let's not forget the incredible Red Dead 2 that came since GTA V's original release in 2013. And it's not like there aren't plenty of other incredible games to fill our backlogs these days!
@ShogunRok Apologies if this is covered in comments below: if I'm upgrading from the base PS4 version for $19.99, are my main campaign save files carried over? (I'm only wanting to play the new island expansion).
@Quintumply As someone who doesn't play a lot of 'culturally Japanese' games (really not sure how to word that but I mostly mean JRPG's and action games) but enjoys anything detective and crime related, is this series easy to get into? I'm considering this and Judgment as an introduction.
@DM666 The graphics and framerate will take advantage of PS5 hardware still but load times won't be quite as fast as SSD allows for. Love the King Crimson thumbnail.
@zupertramp It's tragic we won't see another Alien game by Creative Assembly but the bar has certainly been raised for other developers to do something special with the Alien universe. (Ignoring Alien Firestorm or whatever it's called).
Alien Isolation has no competition in my opinion. Playing at night with headphones in a dark room is the scariest video game experience available. When I had to finally make meaningful progress, I played during the day (although this was still terrifying). Creative Assembly made one of the games of the generation and a massive crowd pleaser for Alien Saga fans. On a stranger note - regarding heart rate for example, Warzone always elicits a similar physical reaction to that of some horror titles!
