I started playing yesterday (with Spiders Thread update). Zero issues thankfully and it looks and plays beautifully on Series X (only 5 hours in). I'm playing with the HFR performance mode utilizing my TVs VRR capability. I'm yet to experience screen tearing, noticeable frame drops or crashes. I tweaked the controls as recommended in multiple articles before starting. I wasn't sure it would be for me but I'm thoroughly enjoying it so far.
@Deityjester I can respect that point of view (I loved it but felt it was overly long). I just can't understand how you could get 'drowsy' when my heart was beating out of my chest most of the time! 😂
Gaming since the 80's but still never played a FF game. This will be the first! Two thoughts came to mind during this Livestream. One - if From Software games had accessibility settings like this they would sell twice as much. (You can still play on hard git gud crew!). Two - I'd love contemporary games to implement a dynamic HUD that you only see briefly when you press and hold say, up on the d pad. Or you hold it once to view the HUD and again to dismiss it. I love to play games with no HUD and tried it in Hogwarts Legacy but briefly need to remind myself of ability assignments or see enemy damage. Thoughts?
I'm in the weird position of having a native 120hz TV but with HDMI 2.0 so I reduce the resolution to 1440p or lower for 120fps. I rarely do it as 60fps is fine for most games but I'll try it here.
Purists won't agree but I think if 20/20 format Cricket had been around a century ago then it might be up there with Baseball from a commercial point of view. It's certainly the more entertaining and tactically interesting of the two sports in my opinion. I also think Rugby is far more entertaining and multi skilled than American Football but as it isn't close in terms of commerical popularity we're consistently stuck with sub par video games.
@Nightcrawler71 Same. The first game is one of my top three zombie games of all time but I stopped playing the second game after opening up the second part of the city. The characters and writing aren't as good and it's not really scary, even at night, which is kind of important in this genre.
If you're an adult and you want to play games on every console then you own every console. You make financial compromises in life to do/possess what you enjoy and short of a decent PC rig, gaming is very affordable, especially with the subscription models or if you're patient enough to wait for games to go on sale. It's also naive to think either of these companies are looking out for gamers. At all. Profit is the name of the game, end of story.
I agree with some other comments on here, give it a go. I'm not a Potter fan, haven't read the books, only watched the films once at home because my grandma wanted to see them. I also have 'open world fatigue', never even bothered with the Assassin's Creed series despite my love of history though I loved Witcher 3 and the Horizon games. I'm in my early forties and absolutely love Hogwarts Legacy. Nostalgic for the magic (pun intended) of youth? Try it!
I'm enjoying the show a lot but it was never going to be as good as the game. Different mediums, different ways of telling a story and very different time frames to tell that story. The show has done an incredible job of recreating the look and feel of the game and the performances have been mostly worthy of a HBO prestige drama. Both game and tv show are great in their own right.
They are certainly condensing the story but I have zero issue with that. As a huge fan of both games, I'm completely satisfied with this excellent show. Ramsey might not look like Ellie from the game but she has completely embodied the character for me and her performances have been stellar.
My initial instinct was to return the PSVR2 as I found Kayak to be significantly blurry with Horizon also not meeting my expectations but some comments on this thread are very helpful and even reassuring. It's the weekend so I'm going to put in some serious hours of calibration and play time before making a final decision. GT7 is definitely fun and I'm yet to try RE Village. Also downloaded some demos to get a broader picture.
EDIT: GT7 and RE Village are incredible in VR alas my wife and I get serious motion sickness even with teleportation settings enabled so I'm returning PSVR2 at this time. Very envious of everyone who doesn't have this issue! Pretty wonderful technology nonetheless.
Rocksteady, one of the best single player game developers in recent years decides it wants money over it's reputation. The thing is, they'd still make money if they stuck to what they're good at and what gamers with an attention span actually want.
@Mikey856 I got the dispatch email here in the US on Friday so I'm sure you'll get yours soon. Tracking says it hasn't actually moved anywhere yet mind.
The consensus seems to be 'brilliant hardware but no games'. It has a larger launch lineup than almost any hardware in recent memory and what percentage of people exactly are buying 4,5,6 or more games at release after spending $549? The games will come and I for one am patient and excited. It's not like we don't all have backlogs on console already anyway. Gaming is both a blessing and a curse in the 21st century!
@get2sammyb Informative review, cheers! This will be my first foray into VR after a two week trial with PSVR which didn't convince me at the time. I've got this pre ordered with Gran Turismo and Resident Evil Village ready to go. Definitely interested in Horizon and Kayak Mirage too. Your review actually made me consider games like Tekken and Streets of Rage 4 among others being played in cinematic mode - anything that doesn't necessarily have or require 4K would be fun on the virtual 100 inch screen.
@Wheatly Yep and the Gamepass app, although exclusively on Samsung TVs at the moment, will undoubtedly be on most smart TVs in the near future as internet connectivity improves for more people and loss making hardware inevitably gets dropped altogether - by Microsoft at least.
@Wheatly I agree, I've had the Series X since launch and have enjoyed countless indie titles as well as the occasional day one AAA. I've only actually bought two games, Resident Evil 2 and 3 for $10 on sale. If Xbox is to survive then I think they do need to be much more competitive with AAA exclusives and not have them on Gamepass day one if at all. Unfortunately the precedent has been set and if Microsoft are not to go the way of Sega and become a publisher only, then something revelatory needs to happen this generation or next.
@Wheatly Yup. I love Gamepass, the value is astonishing for us the consumer but it simply isn't going to get Xbox anywhere near PlayStation. It's basically keeping Xbox in the competition but barely. Microsoft needs competitive first party exclusives in the near future otherwise they will simply become the next Sega and publish only.
@brazzios_84 Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk are among my favourite games despite their flaws. CDPR have some serious talent in the writing department and with whom they hire for original scores/soundtracks. I whole heartedly agree however that they are not a AAA studio whatsoever when it comes to polish. Naughty Dog, Insomniac, Sucker Punch and Sony Santa Monica lead the way for me.
@Bamila Now this is promising RE 2K. EA Fifa is an exceptional product overall but is marred by lazy developent cycles and with no real competition and little reason to truly innovate each year much like Madden, it's far from perfect. It's hard to blame them as I'm sure someone at the top makes the dev decisions but EA need competition like PES provided in the early 2000's. One product will likely dominate licensing unfortunately but I for one preferred the gameplay of PES for almost 15 years. I also don't have time for career modes as an adult with an interest in many game genres so a casual kickabout with great gameplay is preferred.
This is most certainly disinformation. Look at the figures for active COD players every week and the number of players who own PlayStation consoles. Also polling really isn't accurate - see recent political polling among others.
@get2sammyb I could yet be proven wrong but this is the type of tech where I don't see a price drop in the foreseeable future if at all. I was lucky to have the PSVR for a two week trial courtesy of Sony when it originally released but sent it back as I wasn't quite onboard despite a few great titles. This time I pulled the trigger. I like games and gaming tech and want to experience what Sony have clearly invested significant capital into. Of course VR will be better in the near future but as I get older I want to experience what is, like you said, cutting edge now.
Loved Deliver Us the Moon. Simple but effective. I even messaged the developer and got a reply. I'll definitely support them by getting this. The TV show For All Mankind and these games have restored my wonder of space!
Hoping to get Resident Evil Village (down to $19 on Xbox) in time for the PSVR2 launch. Might give Elden Ring another go too. Souls games aren't really my thing but ten hours with ER almost changed my mind... until I traded it for Dying Light 2.
@nessisonett Once I finished the game I did consider a mini series was plausible in the right hands (HBO/Denis Villeneuve perhaps) but I also agree this is unnecessary and game to TV/film productions are uniformly awful.... Please let the Last Of Us buck that trend!
I'm not starting until they fix the expansion issue. I had the original base game then bought the expansions on PS4 however they aren't downloadable from the PS5 store for me and some others. I can play the base game on PS5 but when I try to load a save file it says it can't load as the expansions aren't installed. See...
This series will make a ton of money and that's great news for the real life players - they deserve to finally be earning considering they put their bodies on the line for a 0.1% chance of making the NFL while the colleges and networks make billions. As a British transplant and having lived in the southern US for over eight years, the fandom is just incredible. Biggest stadiums in the world filled every week however it's really uncompetitive. Many games are hugely one sided unless big programs are playing each other which they do 2 or 3 times a season.
@Hindenburg I only got through 10 hours of Elden Ring before realizing the grind may not be for me however, I've got absolutely no issue with it winning game of the year. It's brought From Software games to the masses and clearly does a very specific type of game incredibly well, so much so that many developers are imitating the formula. I might continue with it when my backlog is somewhat cleared (probably impossible as an adult!). I'm yet to play Ragnarok but I know it'll be bloody tops.
I'm curious to know if Sony are making as loss selling at this price point. That's generally the case with consoles with Phil Spencer recently suggesting Microsoft subsidize $150-$200 per Series X. If they are making a loss then this is simply the current state of production costs in tech. If they aren't then shame on them as software should make up for the loss long term.
It's basically Dead Space 4, stomping on corpses etc. Really excited for this as Dead Space was a fantastic series let down slightly by the third installment.

A lot will come down to the talent of the development team. I personally am fine with dynamic 4K 60fps if native is going to mean playing at 30fps. It's hard to look back with action games. No one expects consoles to keep up with PC but with the right developers and graphics options continuing the way they have been with most games, we should be in for a good generation of lovely looking games. RE Gotham Knights - this just looks like an amateur and rushed cash grab on the whole comic popularity thing.
