@johncalmc it sounds like one of those things that’s going to be made fun of in 20 years, when somebody does a retrospective of the current times we live in. Like how people make fun of the fact that the pet rock was actually a thing.
@AdamNovice For years, I’ve felt that this would be a developer who’s ambitions don’t match their sales, so at some point they would have to close their doors. Not saying that 2 million isn’t a big deal, but this isn’t a developer making indie games. Games and budgets are getting bigger and bigger.
How do any developer find the time to play games when creating them is so demanding? Reminds me of when I hear about animated movie directors having lives outside of their work. How do they find the time?!
Journey moved me to tears a few times. I also remember the feeling of loneliness when the person I randomly met and played with along the way decided to stop playing. What an amazing game. AND THAT ENDING!!!!
I wondered what happened to David. I used to love visiting his website back in the day (felt so personable). Then he releases a game, that wasn’t well received, then I don’t run across anything about him after that. I thought it was a wrap for David. Great to hear from him.
This game reminds me of a certain theme park. It’s like, yes, they now have Pixar Pier, the Incredicoaster, Cars Land and other improvements, but it’s still CALIFORNIA ADVENTURE!!!
@ellsworth004 Your comment sent me to Google. I thought a sugar glider was something made up for this game!!! Only kind of animal I’ve known like this is, is the flying squirrel!!! 😂
I look at games that gets scores like a seven, as games that are good, but contains flaws that may be deal breakers for some. And these flaws usually are very important to make note of, given the type of game.
For example, Epic Mickey. I was VERY excited for this game. The idea alone. The great Warren Spector interviews. The concept artwork. Pixar getting involved with the story. That awesome trailer with Mickey being dragged out of his room. My excitement was gone once the reviews started to roll in. The dings it received for the camera and controls kept me from buying it. Two very important things when it comes to a gane like Epic Mickey.
I recently started playing Recore:Definite Edition (Xbox One). This game got a lot of 6 and 7’s as a final score. I’m having a blast. The flaws do not detract from the fun I’m having with the game. The load times have caused me to stop playing (they can kill my vibe, taking me out of the game), but it never stoped me from coming back later. I don’t mind the backtracking. I think people were so harsh about it because there were other factors that really bothered them, and the backtracking compounded those very complaints. Maybe they didn’t mind in other games, because there were incentives for (or while) doing it. I’m not bothered by it at all.
@wiiware OMG!!! I forgot about the light gun genre!!! Had lots of fun playing these games in arcades and at home, back in the day. This is a genre I would love to make a comeback. House of Dead. The Resident Evil game (seems like there was more than one) on the Wii. Time Crisses. Wow! Your comment brought back a flood of memories. Would love to see what could be done on today’s (or next gen’s) hardware.
I DONT KNOW HOW IN THE **** I MISSED THIS GAME DURING THE ANNOUNCEMENT!!!! I’ve wanted a rerelease or remaster of this game for YEARS!!!! As a matter of fact, it’s the only game I’ve wanted rereleased or remastered. Now I want one of these babies!!!!
@Porco @Badboyfx86 Porco is right. Just look at Sega, starting in the mid 90’s, and the detrimental effect their decisions had on the Sega brand. The release of the Sega Saturn being the point of no return, in terms of customer skepticism. Also, look at how the console wars tipped in Sony’s favor when Nintendo refused to use CD’s for the N64. They chose to give into the fear of losing profits, due to piracy, by sticking with carts.
@JoeBlogs That’s so true. Which make me wonder something. If Nintendo start making VR games, and their first release was a Mario game, would that help VR become mainstream a lot sooner?
I always felt that Sony was hesitant because of the PSN security issues they’ve had in the past, and the backlash they’ve received. Things are going incredibly well for Sony, and I think that they didn’t want new issues (and the bad press that obviously would have followed) resulting in them hoping on a wave.So they wanted to make sure they had their bases covered.
@Gamer83 If I’m not mistaken, indie developers are finding a lot of success on the Switch. Some of these types of games sell more on the Switch than the other consoles. Also, a lot of third party (AAA) developers seem to pleased with sales results. Their still releasing games (I know, a majority of them are old ports) and have games in the works. Unless I’m missing some rumblings in the streets (Internet 😄).
I’m seeing a lot of comments around the Internet about people having a Switch that’s collecting a lot of dust this year. I’ve always wondered, where do people find the time to play all of these games. Especially since most of them probably have a PS4 along with their Switch.
Did it seem like the writer of this article came off a bit bitter about Fox not being on the PS4 version? Or was the fact that Fox was never going to appear on this version meant that the writer was going for something else with the tone?
@nathanSF I live in LA and that’s my reaction when I see these kinds of advertisements, most of the time. I haven’t seen this but, some of them really grab my attention, at night. They can really light up an area. But, I never really pay much attention to what it’s advertising. I wonder about some of them, though. They can be really distracting in certain areas. That’s just what drivers need out here in LA!
Who didn’t see this coming once the Switch took off? While we don’t know what the future holds, I wouldn’t be surprised if Sony comes up with some kind of tablet add-on.
@ShogunRok I haven’t played one of these games. This is the first time I’ve read about this franchise. What I’ve taken away from this review is that it’s like a spiritual successor to Shenmue. Am I wrong?
@get2sammyb is that something all hardware companies do when their system isn’t performing that well? I remember Nintendo doing the same thing during the Wii U era.
Out of all the current gen systems, I only own an Xbox (for now), yet I never read about it. I never see anything while looking around on the net about the Xbox that makes me want to stop and read. The only 2017 news I remember is the launch of the more powerful console, Cuphead, and some shooter that was revealed at E3 that got people excited. And I don’t even remember the name of that! I’m more busy reading about the PS4 and Switch, all the while making notes of games interested in getting when I finally purchase the systems.
I don’t want this to happen, but I feel like Quantic Dreams will be one of those developers who’s ambitious games people will be looked back on fondly, years from now, while reading an article about how those very ambious and costly games are what cause them to close their doors, permanently.
I don’t want this to happen, but I feel like Quantic Dreams will be one of those developers who’s ambitious games people will be looked back on fondly, years from now, while reading an article about how those very ambious and costly games are what cause them to close their doors, permanently.
GO NINTENDO!!! Sorry. Lol... When I saw the article, it put a smile on my face! I grew up with Nintendo in the 80’s, so I like to see them, “kicking ass, and taking names!” 😄
Ever since remasters started coming out on the PS3, I would occasionally dream about the day I would see the news that an Intelligent Cube remaster was coming out. I’m still dreaming. 😞Seeing news like this always reminds me of that. I never see or hear anybody reminisce about that game. So sad. I never played Catherine, but I remember being interested back when it was originally released. Wouldn’t mind giving it a go on the PS4.
The main games are what turned me off from this game back in the day. Specifically, the third game. The racing missions and missions where you had to ride things and avoid obstacles had me passing on this game as soon as it was announced.
It trips me out, sometimes, to see what Square Enix has done with this series. I remember when a Final Fantasy release felt like an EVENT! There was something in the air with each release. A palpable excitement. And I could never really get into the series!!! I think that ended sometime during the PS3 era.
Who asked for this?! I didn’t know that there were slightly enjoyable Busby games back in the 16 bit days. I just remember the 3D games. Who next? Gex? Croc? At least they had some decent 3D outings.
Nice to see Sony AND Nintendo doing well. Things seems so quite when it comes to the Xbox One these days. Don’t even see it getting major headlines these days.
I actually had some Nintendo questions in mind while reading this article. Great to see that this comment section has turned into a Nintendo discussion! With that said... I’m surprised to see Splatoons sales numbers. Was the first game a hit in the UK? I was surprised by the Switch being number one. I was under the assumption that Nintendo was just doing ok in the UK. And that Nintendo always played second fiddle to Sony. Has Nintendo ever won a generation, saleswise, in the UK?
I remember the stink this game cause back when it was released! Crazy how times change. I bet the majority of the articles written about this game, these days, looks back fondly on the original release and the controversy surrounding it.
I wonder if the success of the Crash trilogy has to do mainly with nostalgia and it turning out to be quality product or if it's that, but, also, a sign of a thirst for these kinds of games again.
Seeing Ape Escape reminded me of how big a deal it was to be the first release to use the double analog controller for the PSone. It also reminded me of the 'can it be done without missing something in translation' articles before the PSP release.
For fun, they should throw in Captain Blasto and Intelligent Cube.
What I'm about to say is by no means meant to start something in the comments section. I'm speaking from my heart. I hope the game comes out on the same day as the Switch release and it suffers because of it, at least for the first month sales. As somebody who grew up loving Nintendo, only to see them fall from grace, and I ended up favoring a couple of Sony consoles over Nintendos in the past, it would be nice to see headlines about Horizons sales being hurt by the Switch. I like to see Nintendo being celebrated, especially after a few years of so much negativity. The fact that their brand can still be seen as a threat in the current gaming climate...well, makes me feel all warm insides lol! And, again, just the first month sales. I wish nothing but success and longevity for Horizon.
