Shinji 'Please Be Excited' Hashimoto has stated that 2018 will prove to be "a big year for Final Fantasy". The Square Enix producer lets the tease loose in an interview with Edamame Arcade Channel, which you can watch in full above.
So, what's happening with the beloved franchise next year? Well, we already know that Dissidia Final Fantasy NT is due out in January, but beyond that, we suppose the publisher must have some surprises in store. As Hashimoto puts it: "Next year will be the 31st year [since Final Fantasy's debut], and our teams are busy working on new titles." He continues: "Next year will be a big one, and we will bring exciting, new Final Fantasy titles to the world."
Of course, Hashimoto could be referring to a bunch of mobile titles for all we know, but this is the kind of stuff that's going to generate a lot of speculation. Final Fantasy VII Remake? We're certainly not getting our hopes up, but we at least know that it's in development. Kind of. Maybe.
What would you like to see from Final Fantasy in 2018? Feel free to let your imagination flow in the comments section below.

FFVIII for PS4 please. FFXIII Trilogy for PS4 please. FF One (XVI) please.
I still want every single Final Fantasy game on PS4 with trophies. I want the platinum in them all. EVERY DAMN ONE.
Of course there's Kingdom Hearts 3 too
I would love to see squenix work through the FF back catalogue and re-release them all slowly. How great would it be to see all the FF games on one console! Ps4 and Switch would be my dream.
Start with mainline but slowly work through spin offs too would be so good.
That said. Not sure I'd buy them all again but we'll see. Take the resident evil approach I say.
I'd then like to see them do this for other franchises. It seems to be slowly happening for dragon quest on DS (bring over rocket slime!) And star ocean on ps4.
Cloud is cool.
Sephiroth is cooler.
Sora is the coolest.
Just give me Kingdom Hearts 3, dammit!
Why must you torment me, Square .
How about Final Fantasy XVI but done in 16 bit graphics to look like III (or VI). Given how indie developers constantly exploit the demand for retro style games its surprising that the big boys have all but ignored this potentially lucrative market. When games like Bloodstained are getting $5.5 million in backing and its not even an official Castlevania game and the reception if the recent Sonic Mania, it shows there is a demand for new entries in these series beyond using the latest graphics at their disposal
@NathanUC I think Square said 16 will be on the next system
@carlos82 Project Octopath Traveller is what you’re looking for it’s in 16-Bitish and HD 2D according to SQEX thing is you’ll need a Switch
@Derpie1 haha I've already played the demo many times and its a beautiful game, we need more of this but with the big name franchises
@carlos82 Hope to god that game does well maybe more games will come in. You may not get that cus Square loves these high budget graphics
Although funnily DQXI has a Retro Mode... in the 3DS ver!
When was KH3 first announced? Seems like a very along time ago...
Anyways, I'm interested to see what they do with the Avengers game.
Since he's the FF brand manager I'll forgive him for not talking KH3, but that really should get precedence in 2018. Well after DQ11 gets released in the west. Seriously just give us a date already.
And then FF7R. I'm still waiting to hear how many episodes or segments it's going to be in and how far apart they'll be, b/c the PS4 is getting old and we still don't have a date for part 1.
I've never played FF8 so if they buffed that up for PS4, I'd dip.
It trips me out, sometimes, to see what Square Enix has done with this series. I remember when a Final Fantasy release felt like an EVENT! There was something in the air with each release. A palpable excitement. And I could never really get into the series!!! I think that ended sometime during the PS3 era.
@Derpie1 Oh I'm sure. It was mostly a joke so I could call it FF One instead of FFXVI.
I'm sure they'll milk the FFXV world a bit more with at least a few more paid expansions or sequels. Even though FFXIII wasn't well received, they still made two sequels due to how long/expensive it was to build the world/characters in XIII. I'm sure we'll see the same in FFXV.
@NathanUC SE is copying Atlus at this point
@Derpie1 Hear me out.. the Persona team writes the story, SE creates the battle system.... EHHH!?!?!?!?
I don’t even care anymore, to be honest. Final Fantasy 7 probably won’t show up on PS4 now at this point, let’s be real here...
@WanderingBullet 2013, same time as FFXV.
I predict new expansion for FFXIV, FF VIII on PS4, the XIII trilogy, World of FF 2 and a big update on FFVII.
Standard corporate talk. Hopefully the 7 remake will be announced as a PS5 title, and we'll finally get 8 on the PS4 store.
Hmmm after the stupid FF12 announcement im calling it more DLC. Final Fantasy 7R is now a service game i have no faith in Square-Enix.
@NathanUC but the Persona Team keeps it true to the olden days... gameplay wise unless you get the Bravely Team involved or the DQ team cus they do Turn based gameplay...
cus all the current FF team cares for nowadays is Action RPGs...
It'd be cool to see sequels in each of their worlds. Eg. New storys/chapters from FF3 to FF9, tactics etc. But with modern gfx. But it'd also be nice if the games ran smoothly especially in the case of final fantasy 15! New news for Final fantasy 16?
As usual, FFXIII collection would be a "shut up and take my money" case for me even on PS4, let alone on Switch. Speaking of Switch, the port of XII Zodiac Age as well, please - and come to think of it, Type 0 HD port would never hurt either.
@carlos82 i would rather the main games continue to try and push the graphical barrier myself BUT i do like the idea of more retro, 16 bit style games and it's not like they haven't done it before, FFIV The After Years, FF Dimensions, FF Brave Exvius just to name a few
Just make a Final Fantasy that plays like a Final Fantasy again, I didn't fall in love with the series because of the pretty boy protagonists, I fell in love because of the classic turn based JRPG gameplay. It saddens me to see the series turn into action games.
Next year they will announce something big. So big that it will take like 10 years to release.
Fewer promises and more results please.
Still pissed that they didn't release a 30th Anniversary Box with all games from 1 to 13-3
Final Fantasy VI remake for the Switch, FFVII for PS4, FFXIII Trilogy for everybody...minus xbox, cause screw xbox.
Ugh, probably more dlcs of FF XV...
@nhSnork Enough with the port begging for another platform on a PS4 site, it's lame.
@PS_Nation I don't beg for anything from fiction producers, but wishful thinking is a free action. And this one would only be lame in some decrepit console wars mentality. I want the game in a format it won't gather dust in, which Sony has means but officially no intent to provide - and I do mention that a Remote-Playable PS4 version would at least count as a compromise, too. There are yet more incentives for the PS4 re-release when you consider zero backwards compatibility and the fact that the first XIII isn't on PS Store even in its original form.
Final fantasy 16 announcement
Final fantasy hd re make will become ff17.
@adf86 Ah, ok. Thanks.
I'm hoping for more news on FF7 Remake, a real FF16, the next batch of FF15 story DLC episodes etc.
Also a FF13 Trilogy PS4 release please!
@Fight_Teza_Fight Have to disagree Cloud is my all time favorite. Then Tifa and then Terra.
@Bliquid The old games are a lot better then the new ones. 😁 😋
@Flaming_Kaiser I’m currently playing FFVI on vita & I agree Terra is awesome!
