In the case of Highguard, the upcoming free-to-play first-person shooter from ex-Titanfall and Apex Legends alumni, it may actually be a curse.
PS5 fans will be all-too familiar with the brutal discourse that tends to circle online multiplayer announcements these days – that fierce backlash basically stopped Concord in its tracks, and will likely have a similar effect on Fairgames and 4Loop in the future.

But Highguard, which will apparently release on 26th January, got roundly roasted by the entire gaming community, and not just PlayStation owners.
It seems harsh, but its position as The Game Awards’ big closer was not particularly well received. And now, as noted by Forbes, there’s been no posts on the game’s official X or YouTube accounts in almost a month. Is the game really still coming out?
Well, given the ferocity of the backlash, dev Wildlight Entertainment may simply have paused all marketing until the product is officially out. After all, it’s easier to convince players when you have a build readily available that people can actually play.
Either way, we suspect the studio is going to have to say something soon – whether it’s decided to delay or stick to its original plan. There’s not even a PS Store page to wishlist yet, which doesn’t look particularly great.
