Re: Soapbox: Why I Love Shenmue

@themcnoisy
I know, I've got an AES myself.
I'm actually quite a bit retro gamer myself. Even ordered a Framemeister a week or two ago to replace my XRGB2+ so I can hook up all my old systems to the main tv instead of just some old CRTs.

It just baffles me that someone who loves retrogames wouldn't like the Dreamcast as it's kinda the last system of it's kind. So for someone who literally grew up on arcade games from the age of 3 (my mom owned a pub ) Starting with Space invaders with the cellophane overlay around 1980, the DC is one of my favourite systems ever, just like the Saturn for instance.

Re: Soapbox: Why I Love Shenmue

@themcnoisy "I didn't like the Dreamcast - other than Shenmue, jsr and soul calibur the games were rubbish or short arcade games."

You don't deserve that Metal Slug Avatar!

Re: Round Up: Star Wars Battlefront PS4 Reviews Feel the Force

meppi64

Ouch. While I expected the game to be somewhat mediocre, I wasn't expecting scores like this. Especially since EA doesn't shy away from trying to buy good impressions. The latest Reddit debacle where mods were bought off by EA to ban people who posted not so glowing impressions about battlefront shows just how low they are willing to go to try and get people to buy their crap.

Re: Aussie Store Wants You to Know That Metal Gear Solid 5 Is a Hideo Kojima Game

@hYdeks
Well good luck with that! I hope you enjoy the next Metal Gear Solid game whenever it'll be released, if ever, because I sure as hell won't be buying the abomination it's bound to be. lol
Just look at how Castlevania went when Iga left as a nice example of why people like Kojima matter a ton to a project.

"It may surprise some of our American readers, but the NES was never particularly popular in Europe."

Hmm. Just about anyone I knew at the time or know today that played games during the 8-bit era had a NES. Some a Master System, but very few.
Mega Drive vs SNES was a lot closer and somewhat of an even split, but certainly not NES. Barely anyone had an Amiga or C64, although a couple of friends did.
I do understand this was way different in the UK, but in the mainland it certainly was a whole different story.

Re: Microsoft: Sony's Buying Lots of Third-Party Exclusives for PS4

meppi64

"It was widely believed that Call of Duty, for example, had switched sides because of the PS4's global dominance"

Is there really a single person with just an inkling of how this industry functions that ever said such a thing? Of course it's a money thing, it always has been.
MS has been doing this ever since they got into the business. Just look at the truckloads of money they dumped in Sega's lap when they got out of the hardware business.
And now all of a sudden we should look at Sony differently because they now do this as well?
Spencer please....

Re: Earth Defense Force 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair Brings Buggy Slideshows to PS4

meppi64

As someone who bought the Japanese version on release day, I can honestly say that it runs a heck of a lot smoother than the PS3 version, or even the 360 one.
Framerate still drops quite a bit when things get too crazy, but nowhere near the levels that were seen on last-gen hardware.
Also, you actually feel as if you've got a force backing you up now thanks to soldiers and tanks actually fighting with you and helping you push the bugs back.
The new lighting system is also a big step up and really helps to set the mood.
Can't wait to see what they will do with EDF 5 if it goes PS4 only.

Oh and I'll grab the EU release the day it comes out as well. I love this game that much!

Re: Soapbox: You Should Stop Pre-Ordering Games

meppi64

I only tend to preorder games because I don't have a game store close-by and I wan't certain games on release day. So I have to go with online shops.
That being said, I've become very picky as to which games I preorder.
The Witcher 3 for instance I have on preorder right now.
And I tend to do the same with Naughty Dog games, certain series from Koei Tecmo and just about everything from Nintendo.
As long as I don't feel a company is treating me like dirt (or a cash cow and nothing more) I have no problem doing this.
On the other hand, certain company are on my sh**list. EA, Ubisoft, MS without a doubt from the Xbone reveal on, and now Konami for instance.

Re: Review: Toukiden: Kiwami (PlayStation 4)

meppi64

Damn, too many games to play in such a short period.
Hardline, Bloodborne, Toukiden and EDF 4.1!
Buying them all on day 1, but I just don't know how I will be able to combine them with a full-time job...

Re: Review: Battlefield Hardline (PlayStation 4)

meppi64

Quick tip to avoid spawning on a teammate that is under fire.
When you see a red sign next to their name in your squad list before you respawn, it means that they are in a dangerous situation.
Unlike the last BF4 patch which made it so that you couldn't even spawn on a teammate in certain situations like this, Hardline lets you choose for yourself.
So if there's a red sign next to them, be aware that you'll be spawning right in the middle of a firefight.
Either make sure you are aware of the situation that particular person is in, or choose another spawn point that's safer.

Oh and I have to say that this is the first BF game since Bad Company 2 that I've enjoyed this much in MP.
BF3 was a step forward in many ways, yet a step backwards in others, and BF4 was just a mess all around, even till this day to some point.
I was one of the most sceptical people when it came to Hardline after getting burned on BF4 and even vowed to never buy another BF game again. But I'm weak.
To my surprise none of the issues I had with BF4 show up in this game and now there are actually several game modes worth playing again, instead of just maps built for conquest and all other game modes thrown in just because they have to check the list on features.

Re: Talking Point: Is This the End for the PlayStation 3?

meppi64

Love my PS3 and still play it constantly, but that's only because quite a few Japanese games are only being released on it (and Vita) and not the PS4.
Gundam Breaker, Atelier series, Sengoku Basara 4, EDF4. Although 4.1 is coming soon on PS4.

It really is time to let go and move on to PS4. Cross gen is really holding back some great upcoming games.

Re: Pachter: PS4 Exclusive The Order: 1886 Could Sell Up to 12 Million Copies

meppi64

Oh what an age to be living in, where we can share the same ground we walk on with a visionary like Pachter!

Who would have thought that a game such as this would be able to sell millions of copies if Sony would include it with every single PS4 sold from this point forward!

How this guy isn't our global president yet with his insight and overall brilliance is beyond me!

Re: Toukiden: Kiwami's New Characters Are Here to Help You Slay on PS4 and Vita

meppi64

@wobrussell

Well the game is fantastic in it's own right, but it just isn't as challenging nor as in-depth as Monster Hunter.
Not that that is a bad thing though.
Both games are just very different a bit like how Mortal Kombat, Street Fighter and Virtua Fighter are all grouped into the fighting game genre.

I personally would't want to miss either Toukiden Kiwami nor Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

Re: Game of the Year: Best PS3 Games of 2014

meppi64

@Godsire-
"remakes, remasters, cross-gen titles, indie garbage, & buggy, underwhelming exclusives."
Actually you're right, those aren't 5 things, they are 6. ;P

I've been playing since the late 70's as well and I must say that I'm not disappointed with my PS4 at all. (And just for clarity, I do tend to buy all consoles and handhelds that come out, well except for the X1 due to MS's bonehead moves that they had to come back from due to public backlash. I stopped supporting that company they day they revealed their DRM vision.)
The first half of the year was very slow, that much is true. But again, if you discount all the cross gen games, which are in most cases highly superior over their PS3 counterparts (unless you talk about COD Ghosts and Black Flag or things like that).
Most of the cross gen games that have been released over the last couple of months have been developed with the full focus on current and then get downported to last gen, most of the time by a B-team even. Which resulted in missing features on the old systems, not to mention a ton of optimisation problems as bugs. Yes even more than on current gen.

Can't really blame on companies trying to keep their head above the water with some last gen sales till this gen's numbers grow big enough to fully support the development of those AAA games.
That's probably the one thing that bothers me a lot about the current gen, the nearly complete disappearance of the mid-tier games which used to fill the void between the huge over budgeted games. Really miss a lot of the quirky stuff that was easier to take a chance on since companies weren't gambling on their future when one of these would bomb.

The releasing of broken games certainly is something that doesn't sit well with me either. Been a huge Battlefield fan since BC2 for example, yet after a full year of failures on Dice's part regarding BF4, I'm done with that company and their games.

I did buy Driveclub on day one and was disappointed with the online issues, no questions about it. But then again, the base game in itself was so good that I could forgive them for messing the launch up since I certainly got my moneys worth from Time Trials alone. Still feel they should have held back the launch till the weather update was ready though.
@DESS-M-8
Whatever.

Re: Game of the Year: Best PS3 Games of 2014

meppi64

Well you can downplay every single console or handheld ever released when you apply that kind of deductive reasoning to it.
"Name me one game, but this, this, this, this and this doesn't count, oh and that, that and that doesn't either." :-/

Re: Game of the Year: Best PS3 Games of 2014

meppi64

Been quite a good year for the old system.
My personal favourites were Sengoku Basara 4, Atelier Escha & Logy and Earth Defense Force 2025.
But especially Gundam Breaker 2, even though it's only been out for a week.

@DESS-M-8
I can't agree with that at all.
I've had my PS4 since day one and already have 30 physical games for it, not to mention quite a few digital only games as well.
It certainly had a slow start as just about any new system has, but by the second half of the year it has built quite a nice catalogue of games.

Re: Talking Point: Which PS4 Games Are You Most Looking Forward to in 2015?

meppi64

For me it certainly has to be Earth Defense Forces 4.1: The Shadow Of Despair.
Loved the PS3 game so much I imported the Japanese version as it came out and when it finally reached Europe I bought the PAL version for both the PS3 and 360.
Really looking forward to the new levels as well as new weapons, but the one thing that got me excited the most is to see it running at a higher framerate. Hopefully 1080p at a rock solid 60fps.

Dragon Quest Heroes is another one I'm looking forward a ton. Hopefully it'll get a western release as well otherwise it'll be another import for me.

Re: Street Fighter's Natural Home Is on PlayStation, Claims Sony

meppi64

When I think Street Fighter, I think of my Saturn first and foremost with Street Fighter Alpha 2 especially, as well as Street Fighter VS X-Men.
Then my Dreamcast for the 3 Street Fighter 3 games that were releases on it as well as the Capcom VS SNK games.
But for the systems that are out today, I'm actually glad it's a PS4 exclusive and not an exclusive one some other system, even though I own all of them except for just one.
