Re: Wuchang PS5 Dev Team May Be Gone for Good

aethermath

Facing tough competition from non-souls like Ghost of Yotei, the already established Black Myth: Wukong and masterpiece Elden Ring, as well as another indie, Lords of the Fallen, so it’s no surprise. I may have forgot a couple other games. The game wasn’t bad but it was facing a tough crowd, for sure.

Re: Starfield Has a Serious Crashing Issue on PS5, PS5 Pro

aethermath

Playing on PS5 Pro on the best graphics settings. I have these crashes only when I pause the game, then put my console in standby and when I go back into the game after a while. If I completely close the game when I am done, there’s no such crashes. I have the same exact issue with Cyberpunk 2077 and a couple other games. Putting some big games on hold instead of quitting is an issue that’s still there. The PS5 equivalent of Xbox’s “quick resume” isn’t always stable.

Re: 'We Will Work to Make Improvements Quickly': Crimson Desert Sells 2 Million Copies on Launch Day

aethermath

They should allow us to remap the controls or offer a more standard configuration, cause it's pretty jarring. Also, rethink the whole approach to giving instructions for a puzzle or a quest. Having a short text to read for a couple seconds before it fade from the screen and having to figure out what they really mean is not really my idea of fun, the no hand holding should at least comes with how to use the controls, since they're so specific. The game has a lot of potential, but it needs more polishing, for sure. My first impression is that it feels like they tried to imitate Red Dead Redemption 2 combined to Witcher 3 with the structure of a Korean MMO.

Re: Hands On: Crimson Desert Runs Well Enough on PS5 Pro, But What About That Intro?

aethermath

Alright, the game controls and the unnecessarily complicated and obtuse instructions for every single puzzle made me regret my purchase since Mindseye. I'm gonna uninstall and play it again once it got several patches. Gonna finish Avowed now, instead. Couldn't get pass the abyss puzzles, had to check for the damn chimney cleaning main quest. I appreciate the no hand holding, but Elden Ring did it best for me, I can't stand having to figure out controls and having to check constantly how to do stuff during an intro. It should have been simpler right from the start, then slowly add more elements to make the game complex, yet fun. It's been frustrating so far.

Re: Hands On: Crimson Desert Runs Well Enough on PS5 Pro, But What About That Intro?

aethermath

During the first fight at the greymane camp, I couldn't complete one of the tutorial where it shows to press R1 and R2 at the same time, it just didn't work at all. The controls are truly janky and don't fit well with years of experience with other games. I also find that pointing at stuff precisely and using L1 a bit jarring, where any other game would simply let you press X for all basic actions.

Well, I'm not done with the intro yet, I'll get used to the controls but it's not Horizon or even Assassin's Creed.

Re: Round Up: Crimson Desert Reviews Are a Major Disappointment

aethermath

I have a feeling this is gonna be a divisive one, with some people really liking the game and some not so much. But ultimately, the game won’t be panned. Maybe this is the type of game that won’t appeal to everyone.

I’m going to check it out, anyway.

Edit: I believe divisive games have a place in this industry, cause otherwise all games would be similar and chase the exact same formula. I was one of the few who really enjoyed Starfield for what it was and there’s plenty of super popular games I don’t even like, like GTA, for example.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? - Issue 624

aethermath

Avowed. Trying to finish the game before Crimson Desert, but I would like to play the first Pillars of Erernity as well. Plus, Monster Hunter Stories 3. It’s a packed season for good games, I don’t know which will be next. I’m really enjoying Avowed right now.

I almost forgot, Diablo IV next expansion is soon and Pragmata as well. So little time for gaming…

Haven’t touched Marathon beyond the first area, I’m too afraid to be killed incessantly without a moment of peace.

Re: 'What the F*ck Are We Doing Here?': PS5 Fans Slam Square Enix for Sloppy Multiformat Strategy

aethermath

Well, several of these titles were made before they changed their strategy and Visions of Mana’s studio was closed and they canned the original Switch version and they also cancelled all possible DLCs, so this one is already out of the new equation. Plus, some Switch exclusives were made with the Switch in mind, they had a deal with Nintendo for these games, they could be redeemed with their vouchers. As for Final Fantasy XVI, maybe they’ll consider doing a port. And for the Dragon Quest games, I get the impression that these games were targeting a younger demographic. Bravely Default could be ported, for sure. Not all Square Enix games make financial sense to port on every platform, but I understand the frustration.

Re: Here's Why Shawn Layden Thinks Sony 'Can't Get Away' with Making PS6 Digital Only

aethermath

If they choose to go fully digital, they should rework the licensing system behind the PS store and implement some refund system to make things easier, a sort of mix between how Microsoft manage their own and Steam. And yeah, better customer support, obviously, especially outside of Japan.

I doubt they would go fully discless considering blu rays are still a thing, in spite of all the streaming services everywhere. They must also still makes money from manufacturing disc based games and movies.

Personally, whether the license is on a disc or on my account, I don’t mind. I buy games to play them. If the store closes one day, I’ll decide then what to do next. I’ve invested tons of money in the 3DS store only to not be able to get all the missing DLCs for my favourite games in a legit manner, I was disappointed, very much so… but I moved on.

I consider awful the idea of locking online backup for your saves behind a subscription, considering Microsoft do it for free, as long as you have a Microsoft account.

Re: Don't Expect Crimson Desert to Be Easy, PS5 Open Worlder Won't Have Difficulty Options at Launch

aethermath

That’s okay. I miss these old mechanics where you can go anywhere and hit some random higher difficulty obstacles, it just push you in the right direction and tell you to level up a bit more before exploring further. It makes the game challenging but also fun.

Of course, some random amazing player will find a way to go right into the hellish corners and show your how easy it is to do that in a YouTube video.

Re: Opinion: The Euphoric Reaction to PS6's Rumoured Delay Really Confuses Me

aethermath

I don’t want to pay 1200$ CAD or more for a console that might release in 2027, especially since accessories costs will also rise and they might also pull a ***** move like making you buy a proprietary/new generation SSD, rendering your current removable SSD in your PS5 useless, those will sell for another 1000$, so no thank you! It’s mostly ill advised in this economy.

Yeah, there’s exceptions, like the Switch 2, but people were willing to pay more cause they waited a long time to upgrade. It was a significant one, mind you. I don’t see any realistic reason, other than the skyrocketing prices that might affect sales and the will of the people to continues spending on next gen consoles. It’s okay to wait a little bit more. I’m not expecting greater performances, I’m expecting an affordable alternative to PC gaming and good games.

Aside from a few issues, I find the current performance okay across the board, they should just keep optimizing and pushing great games, that’s all we need!

Re: New PlayStation Patent Could Let You Put Controller Buttons Where You Want

aethermath

It would make controllers expensive and touch controls are always flimsy on my iPhone, which has a high end touch screen anyway, so I can’t imagine it would be better on a controller. A touchscreen can struggle with pressure detection and it’s already flimsy on tablets with palm rejection tech. Nothing beats a controller with real, physical buttons on it.

Re: Amazon's PS5 MMORPG New World: Aeternum Delisted, Will Be Shut Down in 2027

aethermath

It’s one of the reasons I avoid MMORPGs, if I get too attached to one, they will inevitably decide to shut down the whole thing a year later, sometimes even less. I’m still surprised to see very old ones like LOTR Online and Star Trek Online still supported, I played those years ago.

I was tempted by Final Fantasy XIV Online, to change from my usual single player games but I fear it might either close or be replaced by a new one.

Also, these types of games tend to be money pit, cause you pay for a subscription, some cosmetics, a few DLCs if they’re not included, maybe one full fledged expansion… it’s worse when they’re free-to-play, cause you face limits that incite you to buy something and when the game die, you can’t keep playing it solo, so you lost everything, like going to a casino basically. I might be harsh but I don’t really see the appeal of a MMORPG, we’re far from the golden days of World of Warcraft, where these games were a real novelty.

Single player games are a one and done deal, sometimes worth the full price and surely worth your money if you finish and had fun with them. I don’t mind good live service ones that allow you to optionally play coop or something like that, but also offer a solo experience.

Re: PS6 Could Be Delayed Due to RAM Price Chaos

aethermath

@AdamNovice Regarding handheld, I think there’s technical limitations and regulations that make putting “slim” ultra high capacity batteries difficult to achieve on the engineering side. They’re not always skimping on costs when it comes to battery life. They’re just harder to build and R&D isn’t cheap.

Re: PS6 Could Be Delayed Due to RAM Price Chaos

aethermath

@ButterySmooth30FPS I was looking at gaming laptops, this would’ve been a good choice for me cause of space, I can’t put a desktop setup here, but yeah… several models of Asus ROG notebooks in Canada went from 2500$ to easily 4000$ for the same specs, with a newer graphics card and a newer version of the same CPU. The price increase is due to tariffs too, but it’s becoming insane. Like a throwback at early 2000s prices, my first family owned desktop computer costed 3500$ with a special discount from the government back then, but it included a screen and a keyboard/mouse. It’s quite the price jump. And now everything else, including consoles are jumping price points by leaps. It’s ridiculous!

Re: PS6 Could Be Delayed Due to RAM Price Chaos

aethermath

It’s actually a good thing, cause nobody here would pay 2000$ for a console. At this price point, switching over to PC could be very enticing. Plus, the PS5 Pro just launched last year, so the PS5 has still a couple more years left of great potential.

Re: PS5 Fave Expedition 33 Stripped of Indie Game Awards, But Not for the Reasons You May Think

aethermath

I understand the worries about AI replacing artists, but the way I understand it is that it can still be a useful tool that doesn’t replace artists but make them more efficient with things that matters.

Otherwise, what’s next? Asking programmers to manually write thousands, even billions of lines of code, by hand, instead of using an engine? Test this code manually instead of using a IDE? Game development would take 20 years instead of 5 considering the huge amount of resources they need today compared to the early days.

AI is like social media, it’s a tool, nothing more. People using it to replace human-made work are the problem, not the tool itself.

Re: Talking Point: With Expedition 33 Winning Best Indie Game, What Does 'Indie' Mean to You?

aethermath

By nature, being independent means you aren’t subjected to the pressure and the obligations of a big corporation, cause you don’t really have a board and shareholders to answer to. You’re financially independent and have the freedom to build the games you really want to build. Sure, you get the financial meetings here and there but you’re driven by the creative people and not a board of directors, along with their shareholders.

I’ll also add that indie studios are often backed by voluntary financial support and investors from the outside, cause the competition is good for bigger studios.

Re: Poll: How Would You Rate Cyberpunk 2077, 5 Years Later?

aethermath

I was with Xbox One during the pandemic, I played the game at launch and didn’t have so many bugs except for a few weird ones, almost finished it back then. I played again on the series X, finished it, with Phantom Liberty and played once more on PS5, finished this year, 100%, every gigs, every car, etc. It’s one of my favourite masterpieces, with Elden Ring and a couple old classics from my childhood.
