There are many question marks hovering over the PS6 right now, not least of which is when it will finally emerge.
While it appears to be a possibility it won't launch for another couple of years, maybe more, it's still worth thinking about what a next-gen PlayStation will offer.
One factor worth considering is whether it'll be available with a disc drive to play physical games, or if it might go all-in on digital.
This question was put to ex-PlayStation executive Shawn Layden in an interview last year with Kiwi Talkz, though this specific clip is just now doing the rounds online.
Layden is asked if he thinks the PS6 will be "completely discless", with the host suggesting Sony "can probably get away with it now", likely referring to to rapidly shrinking market for physical games.
"Well, actually I don't think Sony can get away with it now," Layden argues, and his main point is an interesting one about how PlayStation's global dominance makes it a difficult business decision.
"Xbox has had more success in pursuing that strategy, but Xbox is really most successful in their business in a clutch of countries," he says, listing seven English-speaking countries like the US, Canada, UK, and so on.
"[PlayStation], which is the number one platform in probably 170 countries around the world, has an obligation, or a responsibility, to say 'If we go discless, how much of my market is not able to make that jump?'"
He goes on to describe scenarios in which a wholly digital console wouldn't be viable; rural locations where high-speed internet isn't an option, athletes travelling with their PS5s to play in hotel rooms, and military bases in locations with no online access.
"The ability to go to a discless solution, a key point to that is, 'Which part of your market cannot be served by that? Which part of your market will be damaged by going to a discless market?'" Layden says.
He adds Sony is probably "doing the research" on this very thing, and that there's probably a "tipping point" where, if reached, the company will be confident enough to drop disc support altogether. "But Sony's market globally is so huge, I think it'd be hard for them to go fully discless even with the next generation."
What are your thoughts on this? Would you be disappointed if PS6 can't play discs? Tell us in the comments section below.

The thing is, if Sony decided to go discless for the PS6, there's nothing anyone could do about it. I also believe that most diehard PlayStation fans would follow regardless because the brand is in such a strong market position.
I genuinely do not want that to happen without them improving their awful customer support and PlayStation Store refund system.
I'll certainly stop buying consoles if they do, and that's not bluffing. It's literally the only reason I haven't moved to pc any way.
I can't see them going completely discless yet but wouldn't be surprised if it is mainly sold discless but with a separate disc drive purchasable. Much like with the 5/Pro now.
Would I be disappointed?
Yes I would.
Will I still end up buying one anyway after I've finished throwing my toys out of the pram? (stroller for you Americans)
Yes of course I will lol
I know that I'd stop my PlayStation journey at the first discless console. It's the main reason I haven't gone over to PC. I'm an older guy with plenty of shelf space, and I like putting things on my shelf. It's that simple. If the time comes that I can't do that anymore, then I'll go full PC at that point with GOG as my preferred storefront.
Isnt that video with Layden like 1 year old?
Truth be told, I'd be out if the PS6 goes discless - I still primarily, but not exclusively, buy games on physical media for long-term access and ease of sharing with friends. I have enough of a backlog (going way back to stuff I'm still fixing to play on my SNES) that skipping out on a new console wouldn't hurt. That said, if they include the disc drive and continue to produce first-party titles that are feature-complete on disc, I'll continue to support them. Sony can certainly afford to lose me, so it's not a principled stance or anything; it's just about how I play games.
@IntrepidWombat Same - I like my Steam Deck, and that storefront has remained reliably accessible since the mid-00s, so that'll be where I go for new releases if they become exclusively digital. GOG rocks too (and is beautifully DRM-free); it's just the ease of use on my Deck that keeps Steam front-of-mind for me in the digital space.
Most people will be like the honest poster above - insist they're 'out', make a load of fuss, cry, whine....then quietly buy the console anyway.
@SMJ This. Consumers hardly stick together against anything, especially a hobby like video games. They’ll go at each others necks before they actually boycott $ony, M$, or greedy ass ***Tendo.
Still can’t believe Nintendo got away with charging for online play (and cloud saves)
I think this makes sense. It’s easy to forget not everyone is in the same situation and has the same as to things like high speed internet.
I think they should offer a disc version of the PS6 mainly for backwards compatibility.
I started buying digital at the end of the PS3 era and my whole PS4 and 5 collection is digital but acknowledge there’s a lot of people who’s collections on still on disc.
Backwards compatibility is great from a consumer perspective and from a business point of view. You get to trade in your hardware to make the next gen console cheaper and it also encourages people to stay in the ecosystem.
Give us 2TB storage for PS6 and keep the $70 price tag for 1st party games if you want people to happy with all-digital. They can spin the narrative by saying “We could have charged for $80 games this generation, but by going full digital, we can cut costs on our games.” Most people would eat it up. Also, allow people with discs of PS4/PS5 games to download the digital versions so they can carry over to the PS6 through their account.
Most likely scenario, they will sell a disc-less PS6 and make people who want a disc drive to pay for the add-on. PS5 Pro wasn’t a fluke, it was a sign.
Mate! This clip is over a year old!! Come to Pushsquare for the latest news from a year ago!! 😆
Well third parties will still be doing physical for the Switch 2 for many years to come so it makes sense for Sony to continue with physical as well. Physical game sales are still bringing a good chunk of revenue for Sony, plus the huge second hand market helps drive console sales which for online games will bring in more potential MTX purchases.
@nomither6 Sony also upset me about paying for cloud saves via PS+. I had to sell my launch PS5 when I lost my job and lost hours of gameplay because I hadn't realised that cloud saves weren't automatic.
It's my own fault to be fair but when I was back on my feet and bought a PS5 slim, I was genuinely gutted to see all of those hours gone and never to return. 😥
I'm not sure whether they'd make the handheld digital only or use a different storage medium like carts/UMD but the home console I think will have a disc drive at the least for PS4/PS5 backwards compatibility.
I dont think Sony will go totally discless with the PS6. They’ll probably do the same as with the PS5 Pro, where the base console is discless, and people who want can purchase an add on disc player
I generally hold out for physical game releases (Waited for BG3 to go physical) but I see the writing on the wall and I'm growing OK with it.
Honestly PS+ has conditioned me for this future as 95% of games I've played this generation, I've gotten for free from the service.
The console is a while off yet, so things may have changed by then. I like having the choice; smaller indies and sales I'll go digital, but for the big releases I like to go out and actually buy the disc. I enjoy the ritual. Sounds odd but some people will know what I mean
Everything I’ve heard/read indicates that there’ll be a disk drive add-on available as with the case of the slim and pro.
@SMJ I would immediately make the PS5 the final Sony console I own if there was no physical media option for the PS6.
My backlog among my PS3/4/5, Switch/Switch 2 and even the XBox will keep me going till I die. Zero physical media is where I tap out of console gaming.
Obviously I can speak only for myself, but I’ve been here through the OS PlayStation, the PSP and Vita and even the PSTV along with the 2-5. I’d drop new purchases instantly if this happens.
Big issue is it guts a lot of backwards compatibility for discs people already own too.
Unfortunately when that days comes, I wont be buying much. Certainly not paying top prices for new games. Basically stuck on a Hard drive, no worth, no physical collectors editions, no resale value, no thanks.
@Gremio108 I know exactly what you mean, never payed anything over 30 quid for a download. Certainly wont be paying 60/70 quid
If it is I’ll be very disappointed. I’m physical all the way. At the very least I expect the choice of being able to add on like the PRO. And anyway in terms of PS5 hardware sales isn’t it 70-30 in favour of disc consoles?
@SMJ im very sorry to hear that; i somewhat know the pain. i’ve recently got my original fat ps5s motherboard repaired , because once i realized i had no external SSD or cloud saves, i refused to dispose it and get a new one. I’m sorry you’ve lost your progress, hopefully you can grind your unlockables and progress back - time heals all!
@nomither6 Thanks mate. 👍 I'm glad you managed to save yours though.
Didn't expect that been the answer would have assumed was because they're still quite alot of physical people on ps. Not like us on the adorably all digital Xbox 🤣
PlayStation is always my main console and Nintendo only for exclusive. If PS6 goes digital only then I’m changing that if Nintendo continues to get physical. It would be Nintendo for everything and PlayStation for exclusives on deep discounts.
it is nice to have the option to sell physical games for whatever reason you have to you cant sell digital games.
It would be an anti consumer move considering that you can’t sell your games or share them like you can with physical format. The store seems to advertise the most expensive version of a game rather than the standard version price. I don’t like the idea of them forcing us all to have to accept a eco system where we can only get games from them at the price they set. I think it will come with a disc drive as I expect the system will be backward compatible with PS5 games
It will be discless as standard with the option of buying a disc drive. But let’s be honest 95% of games for the ps6 won’t have a physical disc on release anyway.
I like my physical copies. I always try and buy physical if the option is there because 100%..yes 100% of the time I get them much cheaper than the digital copies. I'm not against digital but it's not something I'd consider committing to unless Sony bring down the extortionate prices on the digital store.
@SMJ
"The thing is, if Sony decided to go discless for the PS6, there's nothing anyone could do about it."
Dumbest thing I have ever read! Yes there is something consumers could do, and that would be not to buy it.
I only ever buy physical media. Call me old fashion, but I think having the ability to hold what you buy, is pretty f'ing important!
The day that consoles go "all digital" is the day that I am done with gaming.
I already have a HUGE back catalog of games that I need to play, and consoles going digital would only incentivize me more to play them.
@Boxmonkey and you know this how? You are speculating at best.
Games haven't run from discs for decades, it was purely a distribution method.
Nowadays with practically nothing of use on the disc, and widespread unmetered broadband, it's just a licence key.
Even then, a lot of licenced content like extra missions and cosmetics are recorded on your digital account and not the disc.
PC's went full digital in the early 00's.
At this point console is a joke. All that plastic and CO2 shipping tat around the world for a dwindling number of luddites.
Unlike vinyl music that has a distinct sound and can justify its existence in a Spotify world, this stupid disc media debate needs to end and the world leave the past behind.
@Balosi
100% agree!
No disc drive, no money. Simple as that.
But I don't wanna buy a 4K blu-ray player!!!!
It's the only reason I have the disc drive in the first place.
No disc no buy. I will not pay the moon prices they charge for digital only.
I'd definitely be out. Not only do I buy physical games, but I'm loving that I can now buy 4K Blu-rays to play on my PS5.
@Kriandis It's surely not the dumbest thing you've ever heard? 😂 I'm not looking forward to a digital only future but I think the PlayStation brand is so strong that the majority of existing fans would follow.
I have a backlog going all the way back to Atari 2600 and pretty much everything in-between. I'll be set with my physical collection until the day I can no longer hold a controller (or die). But I know that my younger family members couldn't give a **** if a game is physical or digital and they will buy the next PlayStation, Xbox or Nintendo regardless of whether there's a disc/cartridge available.
And from Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo's point of view, they want a digital only future as soon as (physically 😂) possible. They'll do everything they can to migrate everyone to their stores as the only way to buy their games.
Simple: PS6, like PS5 Pro, will have an optional, detachable disc drive that can be purchased separately.
I don't see consoles going the way of complete discless, but due to the lack of "stable internet" doesn't really matter when every game nowadays, physical or digital, still require a significant download just to play.
I still love physical but went digital only a few years ago due to how much room a game collection can really take up. I still have my games ranging from PS1/N64 up to PS5 lol.
@Dogbreath the prices need to be the same. There is no reason for the digital prices to be so high. Yes there's the argument for server costs blah, blah, blah but if physical copies can be obtained so much more cheaper (even if it is only a code on a disc) then there is no reason digital prices can't fall in line.
@SMJ What? No competition is actually bad? But all the people I’ve seen cheering the fading of Xbox into irrelevance assured me that only good things would come from Sony being the only player in town! (Nintendo is their own thing, so they don’t really count)
Sony has a good model at the moment: same unit, but with an optional disc drive slot. That way, they can sell the two SKUs, but streamline their manufacturing process. I see no reason to suspect they'd do something different next go around.
I wouldn't be surprised if Sony send out questionnaires to multiple big developers and publishers to see if they are still interested in doing physical copies on the PS6, and then base their decision on that.
Although even if they decided against physical for PS6 games I still think a disk drive will be an optional purchase for those with a large physical collection of PS4 and PS5 games to encourage them to move over to the PS6.
@nomither6 why not, Sony did the same many years ago and for a higher price point.
I’m all digital anyway have been for years, games, music and movies.
And if I wasn’t they would only have to chuck out a new top AAA Uncharted game at me and I’m there.
@LazyDaisy 2TB is not enough, specially if the console is going to be backwards compatible with PS5, they should include at least 4TB, it will be a next gen console after all.
I am struggling to have all my games with the internal 2TB from my Pro plus 4 extra from my SSD, and that’s only for my PS5 games, my PS4 games are installed on an external HDD alongside some PS5 games that I have stored there.
People seem to overlook the fact that maintaining backward compatibility is now super important to hardware makers, and even if you insist the market of physical media buyers is small, there are still millions of people who still buy physical or at least certainly were still buying physical PS4 games in the 2010s, and they'd be left with unusable libraries if Sony didn't support optical media.
@darthvirgin You don't have to throw out your PS5 🤷🏼♂️
@Dogbreath they are not license keys, they also allow you to install the games without an internet connection.
If you don’t like disc games and prefer digital that’s a you problem.
But they are not a waste nor unnecessary.
Physical copy still generate $Billion for Sony which is a lot of money to left in the table if Sony decided to go full digital.
So big chance PS6 will have disc and just like PS5 it will alao have digital version.
I for one, will be going discless on my next playsation console. I bought the disc ps5 day one, and then bought the pro and disc drive.
One reason everyone including Shaun is forgetting, is that most games dont fully ship on the discs. They need day 1 patch and have to fully install on the drive anyway. It's not like ps3 days where you can play straight off the disc. It started happening on ps4. But ps5, I dont think hardly any big aaa games come fully playable on the disc. Bring into the act, a lot of games have some form of live service, and some games on disc dont even work once sections of the game are shutdown.
Due to the Portal and storage space, I now find it more appealing that I can just pick up and play, without having to change physical discs and I can change at a whim. I found myself rebuying alot of the disc games on digital store sales.
@TheFakulty “I dont think hardly any big aaa games come fully playable on the disc”
That’s not true, most of the games are playable once installed from the disc, there are day 1 patches but the game are playable without them.
There are exceptions where you have to download part of the game, like some Xbox published games, but those are the minority.
