Today marks the fifth anniversary of Cyberpunk 2077, CD Projekt Red's dark future, open world RPG that's based on the longstanding tabletop franchise.
The game has come a long way since its original PS4 launch — and that's putting it extremely lightly. It arrived on Sony's last-gen machine as both a technical and mechanical mess. It was so bad that the platform holder actually started dishing out refunds before the title was pulled from the PS Store entirely.
Years and years of hype had led to bitter disappointment. Indeed, we dubbed the game "the single biggest disappointment of the PS4 generation" in our Cyberpunk 2077 PS4 review — and to be frank, we never imagined that CDPR would spend the next half a decade trying to repair the damage.
Here we are five years later, and we're of the belief that Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most memorable experiences you can have on PS5. It took a fresh launch on current-gen hardware, several significant updates, and the incredible Phantom Liberty expansion, but we got there in the end.
We re-reviewed the RPG back in 2022, when the aforementioned PS5 version had finally dropped. We awarded it a much improved score of 8/10 in our Cyberpunk 2077 PS5 review, and then we gave its DLC a 9/10 in our 2023 Phantom Liberty PS5 review.
That really is some turnaround. 2077 will undoubtedly go down as one of the greatest reversals of fortune in gaming history — and now we just have to hope that lessons have well and truly been learned ahead of The Witcher 4 and Cyberpunk 2.
But what are your thoughts on Cyberpunk 2077 after all this time? How would you rate it, now that CDPR has moved on to its next adventure? Vote in our polls, and then take a trip to Night City in the comments section below.

Incredible for me one of my favorite games ever made thats how highly I rate it i still prefer the witcher 3 but cyberpunk is incredible i know when a game is beyond amazing it becomes an experience more than a game
I played originally on the PS4 Pro though I didn’t seem to have as many issues as many others. It was clearly unfinished but by no means unplayable, not unlike my experience with The Witcher 3 at launch. Much like that game, it’s now one of the best experiences on PS5.
I bought the game at launch mostly because I really wanted the steelbook that Best Buy was giving away with the game. Saw the reviews and let it collect dust until 2.0.
And now I've played through it twice with varying builds and will probably play it a 3rd time soon. Wonderful game.
Once the PS5 Update & DLC came out, it was an easy 10' for me! Really great game.
Jesus, 5 years?! I thought it came out in like 2023
I enjoyed it at first but soon realized there was no point approaching a mission doing anything but going in guns blazing so got a bit bored of it after a while.
The actual setting, characters etc were all great though
A fantastic game that should be a benchmark for first-person open-world RPGs going forward.
I would have loved it much more if it were third-person, but you can't deny the intense attention to detail. It should put BGS and similar devs on notice, but I don't think 2077 is CDPR's best work. For me, nothing has touched Witcher 3.
I think it's morally reprehensible. The fact that CDPR ground their employees to dust just to sell a half baked game and rich rich doing it invalidates any good will I ever had for them. I won't be playing this game, and I won't be playing anything else they make, because unlike them, I have principles.
One of, if not the, best games I’ve ever played. Combination of both the story and the gameplay, which is fun as hell. (I usually play like a melee maniac, katanas & fists)
As somebody who didn't like the witcher I was skeptical at 1st. I tried it and didn't really get into it. Then got a ps5 pro and jumped back in recently. Now one of my favorite games ever. Still don't like the witcher. Let the hate begin 🤣
One of gaming’s great redemption stories! I bought it at launch and enjoyed it despite the jank (I am afterall a Bethesda veteran) but had to give up after hitting a game breaking bug.
I restarted after the 2.0 update, completed it and loved every second. It’s a 10/10 for me but I don’t have any desire to replay through it again.
I only picked the game up from thegamecollection with the DLC for £24 last year and yeah it's a 10/10 from me.
I actually played this on my Xbox (please don't shoot me!) when the game first released, and I was over 100 hours in when I hit a game breaking bug, which meant I stopped playing until earlier this year.
I absolutely loved my time in the game, and my only complete run of the game took something like 200 hours. In some ways, I'm glad I set the game aside when I did because I rarely return to games where I have sunk a 100 or more hours into them simply because there is always something new to play. Thus playing it after the Phantom Liberty expansion released was probably the best thing for me...
Yeah played it originally on the PS4 and enjoyed it even though it was a mess in some ways.
But on PS5 with all updates and Phantom Liberty it's a masterpiece
Witcher 3 holds more weight for me. Maybe as it was the first cdpr game I played. But CP2077 is fantastic! Played after phantom liberty dropped and really enjoyed getting that platinum and 100%. 9/10
I played it for the first time this year on ps5 and enjoyed it. I didn’t think it was a masterpiece or anything, but good story, decent action and really nice graphics.
I’ve played through the game twice now, which is something I rarely do. I played it when it first came out, and tbh I never found the bugs that bad. Then I played through it again when the 2.0 version and Phantom Liberty DLC dropped. I think they created an amazing futuristic open world, one that I still sometimes go back to despite having completed it. I can’t wait for the sequel.
Played it day one and it was a complete disaster. Since then, with numerous updates it’s evolved into one of the greats.
One of the best games I’ve ever played. Literally clapped as Phantom liberty ended. Phenomenal.
I was with Xbox One during the pandemic, I played the game at launch and didn’t have so many bugs except for a few weird ones, almost finished it back then. I played again on the series X, finished it, with Phantom Liberty and played once more on PS5, finished this year, 100%, every gigs, every car, etc. It’s one of my favourite masterpieces, with Elden Ring and a couple old classics from my childhood.
I played on Ps5 after update 2.0. I really enjoyed the combat, it is punchy and powerful feeling. The story/quests are good and well written for the most part. The levelling system was really good, scope to build many different builds. Where it loses points for me is the open world, I felt it was a bit sterile when compared to say RDR2. Maybe I didn't involve myself with exploration enough on Cyberpunk but I never felt compelled to where as on RDR2 the world just begs to be explored and lived in.
Solid 8/10 for me though overall, really enjoyed my two playthroughs.
I really loved Cyberpunk when I played it. I didn't try it until the PS5 version was out though so I didn't go through the rough launch. I remember being so bummed though after hearing how much of a disaster the launch was because I was always interested.
I'm glad CDPR stuck with it though because underneath all the bugs was an absolutely awesome RPG.
Better than launch of course. I played it day 1 and got the refund. It had so many issues and it crashed once every 1-2 hours almost like clockwork. Was also softlocked at the end of the game when the tank got stuck upside down. PL was great and should have been a full game.
Well, it was censored after release to remove nudity, so I’d rate it very badly. Especially as they sold it on the fact they didn’t censor anything. Stopped playing as soon as I found that out, but it was pretty OK the couple of hours I played. Nothing special.
Outstanding game. Great story, extremely immersive and a super fun platinum to boot. Highly recommend now that its optimized. 9/10 closer to a 10 than an 8!
@Ricksta there is nothing wrong with not liking a game , there are tons of games that either people love them or didn't get into them , but thats why we have so many games because there is always something for every one to enjoy. at least if people give a game a shot and think ya this isn't a game for me.
Couldn’t really get into it even after trying twice. Once on base PS5 and then more recently on my Pro. No performance issues, but it just didn’t quite click with me. It has some nice ideas, but I never connected with the characters or world and didn’t care for the gameplay either. 🤷🏻♂️
A solid 10. In biased, though.
I've played through the game a whopping 17 times and not once have I played as male V. Cherami Leigh is phenomenal as Valerie.
I have played through Cyberpunk 2077 multiple times; male V, female V, Netrunner, gunslinger, katana-wielding ninja, bare fists… so many ways to play and things to experience. It’s my most played game of 2025 and 2024.
3rd person would put it is the best ever played category.
Played first on PS5, around two years after its disastrous release. Loved it. The first “open world” game since GTA 5 that I just wandered around, soaking in the atmosphere. A stunning sci fi city, and a great game!
I bought a 3070 just before it came out as I was certain my 2070 wouldn’t be good enough for the game. I was very disappointed with it. The open world whilst looking pretty, was just window dressing. NPC’s wandering the streets didn’t add much to it. Recently come back to it with my new GPU (9070 XT) and it runs beautifully but I still think the game is lacking. I would have preferred smaller hubs ala Deus Ex. I’d probably give it an 8/10 maybe? Not as good as The Witcher III but better than the first two.
Was not at all impressed when I tried it years ago (after the PS5 update). I doubt my thoughts will have changed much now, and I don't plan on giving it a try until I can play it at a state comparable to max PC settings (although, I might just say "f*** it" and buy the S2 version if I ever see it on a really good deal).
I always thought Tim Rogers had the most perfect, biting critique of it, though, "Video games are stupid, and Cyberpunk 2077 is a stupid video game."
@4fold What nudity did they censor? I haven't played the game recently, but I'm pretty sure it's still tits galore in Night City.
I know this is a minority opinion, but I think this game is a solid good but not great. It has nothing to do with bugs-it actually ran pretty well on my PS5-there were some crashes and annoying things but nothing game breaking.
I just didn't find the world or the quests that compelling. There were some good quests and story beats, but the game as a whole felt kind of stale and empty to me. I was hoping for a Witcher 3 type experience, with quests and a world that captivated me for weeks and weeks. I thought Cyberpunk was a real step down, even without considering the problematic launch.
I am really glad others enjoyed it more than I did. I also have not played Phantom Liberty, which is supposed to be excellent. And: It is not a bad game by any means. It just left me sort of cold. I am much more excited for Witcher 4 than Cyberpunk 2, let's put it that way.
@RoomWithaMoose What's so "perfect" about that? What exactly makes the game stupid? And what makes videogames stupid?
A lot of people would opine that Rogers' opinions and style of writing is far more stupid.
@4fold That's certainly a choice...
Luckily I waited for the PS5 version, so I never got the bugged experience. For me it was a amazing game. Did all the endings, pending only the DLC, that I will play someday.
I actually really enjoyed what little I played of it and can't wait to get back to it and actually commit to it entirely
I played Cyberpunk when it launched on Stadia. I… thought it was ok. I didn’t love the game. I thought it was very ok. The bugs were actually my favorite part of the game and definitely more memorable than the actual plotline, which I felt was sort of… ok? I dunno. I just didn’t really attach to it like I thought I would. I know a lot of people would disagree with me, but it felt like Far Cry inspired by Blade Runner to me. I liked it better than Far Cry, but less than Blade Runner.
I do also think it’s goofy the game’s gotten as much praise as it got. Given it was released broken, I don’t think CDPR deserved a pat on the back for fixing things for years to make the game better. No matter how much better it is, the game should have to endure the consequences of such a broken launch.
still not played it!! but it's next on the list, installed and ready to roll in the new year, and I can't flipping wait!
@Enuo You make it sound like the employees were in shackles, whipped, starved, beaten and kept in solitary confinement.. I can respect sticking to your principles, but was it really that bad? I can't recall the events.
As for the game itself, it's amazing.. Wish it were third person though, but not sure if that would have taken away from the experience they planned to deliver.
If I go by the core game it's an 8 but I didn't play the dlc. Overall a 7 maybe 7.5 it's just the city had so much potential and I was disappointed they could of added some great side content to the original(more specifically mini games, gambling etc)I felt like you set the game in this incredible environment and you almost run GTA in it with gimmicks without the extra content. The city is a set piece for the main game but doesn't fully embrace it's own universe.
I finished the game twice and stopped somewhere in the first third of a third playthrough as a Nomad. I eventually plan on finishing the game a third time and find/do the small things that I haven't done yet.
It is an outstanding game on many parameters and my scoring is of course taking into account the whole, fixed package on offer.
@MrPeanutbutterz In the context of his review, this statement came after detailing a long indulgence into the genre of cyberpunk in preparation for the game. Where he eventually expressed his thought to interview the author of Necromancer — the father of the genre — for his review of 2077, and even attempted to contact him. Then he elaborates how, after contacting him, and while playing the game, he had an epiphany about how silly of a request that would be. Because 2077, despite how much it might object, is an entry in a relatively young and arguably juvenile art form. It is something a legacy, well-renowned author probably wouldn't care to talk about or think about. Because, "Video games are stupid, and Cyberpunk 2077 is a stupid video game."
Personally, I interpret that as saying, 'Video games have yet to attain high-art status, and 2077 is far from the height of the medium's artistry.' Which is a perfect critique of a shooter video game that tries to be 'mature' and philosophical, but makes missteps. It's not an indictment of the game, rather an honest examination of its limitations apropos its ambitions.
As for Rogers' style and opinions, his 'signature' is literally "I was born stupid, but will not die hungry," and he frequently calls himself and his scripts stupid. Even expressing how much amusement he gets out of certain lines merely for how moronic they sound. So...I dunno, good job to anyone who read his work as occasionally stupid. That was kinda the intention. He doesn't really try to be this uber-sophisticated, always right, know it all. So, to me, anyone who criticizes him as though he does just outs that they don't really engage with his work and are probably just offended over some petty disagreement they've had with him. Even in this specific case, his review of 2077 was actually fairly positive a decent amount of the time. His opinion of it is a lot more complex than I've alluded to; I just picked out a specific line he wrote that always stuck out to me.
If the original product had matched the finished game, I genuinely think it would be regarded as one of the best games of its generation. I love it.
The When question needs to have an 'At launch on PC' option
When I first played it, it was a dumpster fire, then I gave it a second chance when Phantom Liberty launched and it was fantastic.
Why is no one talking about the results button!? Is this new? I love it! I always want to check out user scores but each time it adds to my collection. Great feature PS!
I played a few hours a few years ago, but wasnt in the mood for it, might have to give it another chance at somepoint.
I always loved it while recognising how flawed it was at the time. It's only ever gotten better, it's an all-timer for me.
I think it's a good game. I do wish there was at least one happy ending. I kinda hated the endings they gave us. I played it on pc, because I couldn't stand the low FoV on PS5.
@Rjak riding off with panam isn’t a good ending?
I bought it at launch, I’ve not played it for a couple years after all the updates, and it’s still one of my favourite games.
Sticks in the head, superbly fun to play, and some of the best side quests I’ve experienced. It had me at different points whooping, clinging to the edge of my seat, bawling my eyes out and having to step away for a couple days to let parts sink in.
Might just have to boot it back up and get around to the DLC finally.
@HRdepartment That one is the best ending we've got, but V is still dead after 6 months.
If only it had been released in the state that it is now, and on the hardware we have available to ourselves in 2025 both in terms of PS5 Pro and PC.
The classic cautionary tale of developers releasing games before they are ready, and having ambition and vision that exceeds the available hardware of the day.
Honestly one of the greatest open world RPG'S ever created. Night City to me is the best city ever created in a video game. It feels so alive and densely packed that I find myself just walking around and talking screenshots. No other game has ever had that effect on me.
Got the game first on PC, back in April 2021, when i used to play a lot on PC. Bought the game again in 2022 for my Xbox One, back in March, i think. Got the game AGAIN last year, around March, on my PS5, with the DLC too. This was the first time i finished the game
I love the atmosphere of this game and playing it with Dualsense + 3D Audio is just an unforgettable experience. A solid 9/10 for me
I think it’s worth noting that Phantom Liberty is like one of the greatest DLCs ever made. A rare DLC that extends its base game’s story to such extent that it feels essential/mandatory to the experience.
@RoomWithaMoose
Nope. Female nipples in the city censored, permanent underwear added to your character. Confirmed.
@MrPeanutbutterz
Yep. Releasing as is would be one thing, but creating a better, more authentic game, marketing it on its down and dirty world and specifically it being uncensored, then sneaking into patch 1.04/1.05 censorship. No. Screw em. Plenty of other games to play.
I haven’t played it since launch, but it was just okay. Didn’t really stand out in any way.
I just dont get the hype for the game.
Its ok but the interactivity is pretty poor. I just found it quite boring. So many merchants fronts but nothing.
NPCs are just there and dont really do much.
It just never felt actually lived in and I was just going through the motions.
Maybe im missing something and people can enlighten me but I was pretty dissapointed, esp when witcher 3 was such a step above everything else.
I think the game is fantastic. Granted I never played it when it first released but I did play after a lot of stuff was fixed.
It's just not a very good game. The open world is one of the most boring I've ever encountered. It's does nothing very well and manages to make everything a muddled slog to get through.
@LofiPie27 it has the most lifeless open world since Infamous second son
Played the original release for maybe 4-5 hours on PS4 on release date. Was way too janky at first and I told myself I would come back when its patched. Started over once Phantom Liberty dropped and the updates were complete, and my GOD was the game incredible. I couldn't put it down, I think it's my favorite 1st person RPG of all-time.
Objectively one of the best games of all time in my opinion. The level of immersion is fantastic and the state of the game has finally got to where it deserves to be considered an all time classic.
I had it pre ordered on PS4 but never touched it after the initial reviews - then came the free PS5 upgrade. I finished the main campaign then waited patiently again (for years) to start over with Phantom Liberty on a beefy PC and oh my is this game gorgeous! Last week I started a new playthrough with the Luke Ross VR mod and can safely say this is the best way to play - just mind blowing. If VR wasn't still relatively niche, I think we'd see more AAA and AA with VR options. Indiana Jones comes to mind with another terrific VR option.
Anyway, Cyberpunk is a top ten all time game for me personally and I started gaming in the 1980's.
It's a good game, but the lack of 3rd person knocks it down a notch for me personally
One of my favourite games of all time. Just cruising listening to those awesome radio stations was cool for me. The graphics, story and interactions 💯.
Could quite happily platinum it again!
Still massively overpromised and underdelivered. Still no role playing game.
@16BitHero (#66) So you mean subjectively!
Liam Manley made the best video about the general pointlessness of the game btw. Worth a watch.
I only ever played on PC, so I can't give any input on how it performs on a playstation. They dropped Phantom Liberty the day I finished building my PC and it was 50% off. What luck!
I don’t like first person games. I find the combat to be clunky and unsatisfying……I played this and enjoyed it but not as much as if it were third person I think. I don’t know, maybe I’ve spent too much time playing Rockstar games.
One time I accidentally had gay sex in this game.
Oddly could never get into it, kinda a bummer ngl.
@PerpetualBoredom I noticed that at the time of writing and thought I'd leave it there to see if anyone noticed 👀
It's a fantastic game! On my 2nd run still. The detail on the weapons is crazy, top 5 fps views of all time, makes up for the lack of 3rd person. It was more like "look how detailed the guns are instead of looking at your outfits in 3rd," so it's cool.
I usually can't stand procedural rubbish, but infinite Judy dates would be something I could go for.
It's a great game now, but is it amazing? No I still think it needs more work in the gameplay department.
@ApostateMage Cherami Leigh is such an amazing va. I'm glad I discovered her through Persona 5!
Easily one of my all time favourite games. Amazing stuff. Can’t wait for more.
One of the first games I got off ps+.. helluva good time! My only regret was not being able to play it at launch..those videoes made my covid!
Definitely one of my favorite games, I have spent 100's of hours playing it. Easily a 10/10 for me.
5 years? My God how time flies.
Great Game! Night City was really well done and they made traversal fun to the point that I rarely ever bothered with fast travel. Keanu also elevated the game far more than I expected as he had plenty of screen time with amusing dialogue which led to him being a fleshed out character.
It's great, so good! I've played it two times now since 2.0 and Phantom Liberty, i didn't touch it before. Sometimes i just start it up and visits my apartments, have dates with Panam and cruise the streets in my insane car collection, so immersive!
Played at launch on the 4 Pro and really enjoyed it (I too didn't have the amount of issues it appears others had) but having tried it on PS5 it is like a new game, haven't tried the DLC as it came out too late for me to go back but only hear good things!
Amazing game 9/10 from me.
@16BitHero I won! 😍😂
Have a good one
Another punching bag for toxic gamers. Everyone is just one misstep away from getting the full outrage of keyboard warriors that rather engage in so called "controversies" rather than video games. A bad launch, unfortunate as it is, does not justify that amount of unconstructive bashing, dehumanisation and threats. I'm glad cdpr turned this narrative around and came out stronger, but nowadays we see this story repeating on a daily basis.
I finished the game before the 2.0 overhaul. Loved it but it was like a 6/10. Played it again earlier this year from the start and got the platinum. Put like 300 hours in it. One of my favorite games in a long time. I also replayed the witcher 3(ps5 version) and got the platinum this year lol. The witcher is better for sure but both are excellent.
Played it for the first time at the start of this year and I can't believe how many bugs are still in the game not to mention the PlayStation 5 crashing all the time.
Maybe me but after the happy ending of the main lovestory I was done.. Did not need to finish as it was ment to be. Only good games can do this
I've bought this game 3 times and still not finished it. Played it on Google Stadia when it first launched. Did a good 20 hours then but got frustrated with the bugs etc. Then picked it up again on PS5 and got I reakon about half way through then fell off hard and never went back. Then got it on Switch 2 as well, and same thing. Dunno what it is - I really want to like this game and it's not for a lack of trying but it just doesn't do it for me.
I'll give it a 9.5/10 right now. If the game didn't crash (no pun 👀) so much, i'd give it a perfect 10.
I played the og ps4 release bc I needed to see the chaos. It was worth it.
I have the complete and updated version on PC.
I'll jump in after the new year probably.
Need a need playthrough!!
Great game and it runs decently on PS5, but it’s on PC where it really shines.
Still have to try the VRR mode on Pro though. Might change my mind? We’ll see.
@RoomWithaMoose Sorry it took a while to reply, but that's a great answer and I appreciate you taking the time to go into the detail.
I'm actually going to go and watch his review next chance I get.
@MrPeanutbutterz Hell yeah! Hope you enjoy that crazy mofo.
