Re: Sony Allegedly Encouraging Devs to Use PS5's New Low Power Mode, Prompting Fresh PS6 Handheld Speculation

Sakai

@themightyant Sony are signed up to the "Playing for the Planet Alliance" other EU green initiatives and their own "Road to zero" initiative by 2050. You can read about them all online but a snapshot of Road to Zero:

"zero environmental footprint by 2050, with accelerated targets for net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2040, achieved through energy-efficient hardware (like the PS5's chip and low-power modes), reduced packaging, and sustainable practices across the product lifecycle"

These have so far included significant low-power features, including extremely efficient Rest Modes (using <0.5W), energy-saving settings for USB charging and the already mentioned 100W low power mode for games/

It makes sense that these are to do with this and nothing to do with a handheld.

As a reference the switch 2 uses 11-12W handheld and 18-19w docked.

Video game hardware spending in October grew 36% when compared a year ago, to $351M. Switch 2 was again able to offset declines across Switch (-52% versus a year ago), Xbox Series (-37%) and PlayStation 5 (-22%). Nintendo Switch 2 sold 328k units in October. It is 68% ahead of the sales pace set by the original Nintendo Switch and is 3% ahead of PlayStation 4’s previous record velocity. October spending on ASUS PC Portable hardware devices increased by 4.8x compared to a year ago and is now 30% higher year-to-date.

Switch 2 is doing incredibly well!

@SeaDaVie i did mention especially sales in my previous comment, they even mention launch price in the article i have linked
https://www.forbes.com/sites/paultassi/2021/06/30/dev-details-sonys-frustrating-rules-for-discounts-and-promotion-on-playstation/

you cannot even do a launch discount without their approval and it is "very limited." That's right.... You can't do the thing that ever other platform does meaning the Platform X owners will always get the worst deal!

Oh but don't worry. There is a way to guarantee you get featured! All you need to do is spend a VERY reasonable minimum of 25,000 USD to get featured. Oh and then 30% of your subsequent earnings....Bargain!

Now when your game is on the platform, likely without any support from Platform X, you may think, no problem, I can sync up discounts on Platform X with Steam and others...Wrong! Discounts are invite only and invites are also "very limited."

It's been literal years since we could put a title of ours in discount, and I spoke to some other VERY POPULAR devs today and they had the same experience. So even if your game does well at launch and thrives on other platforms, you may still never be invited? Y? who knows?

And from Paul Tassi

I didn’t realize that there would be this arduous process for a game developer to need permission or an invitation to lower the price of their own game.

Re: Sony Sued for 'Abusing Its Dominant Position in the Console Market'

This article completely misses the point. The same court action is happening in the UK aswell with that consumer rights guy leading it

In the summons sent to Sony by Stichting Massaschade & Consument, there are two core accusations: the exclusion of competition, and the exploitation of consumers and game developers. The organisation claims PlayStation players are entirely dependent on Sony and its prices due to its closed ecosystem, while developers have limited commercial freedom with Sony setting prices.

Could just report the news instead of butchering it to try and defend a corporation?

Re: Reaction: The PS5 Discourse Around State of Plays Is Becoming Draining

The problem with their shows recently is that Sony are so quiet, when they finally do say something you expect it to be worth while. But what we usually get amounts to about a blog post. Sony made this problem for themselves having no shows at all or poor shows for years now. It's not the fans fault they are failing to deliver. Hopefully in the summer they have something worthwhile to show us, even if it's not all first party. The shows need to be better

Re: Spider-Man 2's Looking Like Another PC Own Goal from Sony

Sakai

Unless budgets come down, they will not stop the pc ports. Selling to one single console is not a big enough market anymore. I actually expect day and day in the next few years. They need a bigger market to sell their games to, they have been telling us this for years.

Re: Sony's Latest First-Party Release Is Struggling to Do Concord Numbers on PC

Sakai

It's a poor lego game and i just don't think Hoirzon as an IP is anywhere near as popular as Sony think it is.

Part of the reason for the sales numbers the series has is all the console bundles both games received, which inflated the numbers massively.

It's just a middle of the road IP and nowhere near the juggernaut Sony think it is

Re: PS5 Pro vs PS5: Full Tech Specs Comparison

@0niguy from digital foundry

But it's the 16.7TF of GPU compute performance that is new information. Sony has not actually given any kind of TFLOPs number for the PlayStation 5 Pro, but prior leaks have suggested around 33.5TF - a somewhat exaggerated number that arrived with AMD RDNA 3 architecture with its dual issue FP32 functionality. Sony's confirmation of 16.7TF suggests that the dual issue FP32 support is not in the PlayStation 5 Pro - not that this is too much of a big deal as it has very, very little impact on gaming performance.
