Highguard is, in fact, real, and we’ve played it. Wildlight Entertainment, a collective of ex-Respawn developers, has launched a free-to-play PvP raid shooter, and after a couple of matches, we’re intrigued to sink some more time into it.
This is, admittedly, our very early impressions, but like many, we wanted to know the kind of game that Geoff Keighley was willing to bet his entire reputation on. After closing out The Game Awards, there has been radio silence, which led many to believe that another Concord was upon us.
That remains to be seen, but what we can say is that Highguard is an extremely polished shooter on PS5. It’s like the lovechild of Apex Legends and Valorant, focusing on tight-knit gunplay, hero abilities, and tactical teamplay.

Two teams of three will be assigned a base. A brief fortifying timer will allow you to tactically reinforce a select number of walls, similar to Rainbow Six Siege. Your aim regarding your base is to protect the generators within.
Then, the gear-up stage begins, where you will explore an open region of one of the game's five launch maps. You can hunt down weapon and armour chests, or focus on gathering a crystal currency, which can be spent at a vendor that’s dotted around the map.
Eventually, the Shieldbreaker will spawn into the map, and the two teams will fight for possession. Once acquired, you must take this blade to the enemy team’s base to call in your siege tower. This will break the base’s shield and mark the beginning of a raid.

You’ll then have a few minutes to infiltrate the base and plant bombs on the various generators, all with the hope of depleting the base’s health to zero.
That is quite a lot to wrap your head around, and that’s without really getting into the likes of the hero characters (Wardens), or weapon and armour tiers. However, there is a real back and forth that we really enjoyed.
One minute you're on the back foot desperately trying to defend your base, and the next you’re charging towards the enemy's base with a Sheildbreaker in hand. Unlike battle royales, you’re able to respawn quite frequently, so you’re never going too long without getting stuck into some action.

Matches are fairly lengthy, and we had some games upwards of 20 minutes. That gives you plenty of time to get tactical, claw back the advantage, or for it all to fall apart for you and your team.
One thing is for sure, though, and that’s the talent behind forging the gameplay experience. Like Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends, movement feels great. You’ll be jumping, sliding, ziplining, and even riding your horse across its maps, all while switching weapons, abilities, and grenades on the fly.
It’s a proper, polished shooter, made all the better with a rock-solid performance — at least on PS5 Pro. Visually, it’s also a very crisp-looking game, with a sort of muted, yet colourful fantasy backdrop. Disappointingly, an FOV slider is completely omitted, which seems odd for a shooter in 2026, meaning we're missing out on those wide-angle views.

Gun reload animations are properly satisfying with crunchy sound effects and unique animations for each weapon. On top of shooting, it gives every gun its own distinct feel.
Overall, we’re keen to sink more time into Highguard. It’s always fun getting to learn the ropes of some new shooter, and certainly, its PvP raid shooter approach feels unique within the space.
Will it translate into the live service hit Wildlight will certainly be hoping to become? In today’s market, who can really tell? But, for now, it looks nice, it feels nice to play, and it has some real potential for team playing strategy with an interesting and dynamic game mode.

@AaronBayne Zero interest in playing this, but thanks for the first impressions!
Watched a lot of streamers play it, yes the game looks/plays fine but definitely not for me
Edit: 3v3 on such a big map is a strange choice, I think 4v4 or 5v5 would do a lot better.
I’m curious but have so much to play I’ll see what the community decides. Some people are too quick to crap on games, because they forget what truly awful games are like.
"After closing out The Game Awards, there has been radio silence, which led many to believe that another Concord was upon us. That remains to be seen"
Just the fact that they are saying "it remains to be seen" still, after playing it, tells me all i need to know. Where's the confidence? Being a "concord" is the worst outcome imaginable. That game was shut down so fast after launch. And the article is still saying that's a possibility. Not what you want to hear in a hands on impressions piece
I’m glad people are giving this game praise. I strongly dislike a lot of gaming culture, where they hate on a game before it’s even released, and for no real reason, mind you, and attempt to sabotage work a developer worked hard on. It’s really disheartening. While the game isn’t for me, I happy to see it being good. I hope it finds an audience.
Yea I don't think this game is going to survive the next month or two, it is sitting at 21% on steam and has already lost half of its player count in just 4 hours, and on the PS Store it's sitting at 3.30/5 which is on the lower end for reviews on the PS Store.
I've been seeing a lot of people saying that they keep getting booted out of matches and that there is bafflingly no FOV slider on consoles, and that the maps are to big for a 3v3 game.
3v3 is personally an insane decision. With randoms that’s too small a team for collective responsibility.
Put an hour into it and yeah i deleted it. Its not bad its just boring and very bland.
Being torn to shreds on Steam lol.
Same crap, different theme, definitely not for me.
Played 2 games and deleted it not for me.
So yet another multiplayer shooter, how exciting 🙄....I know I'm probably showing my age, but by God do I long for the days of quality SP shooters; Half Life, Soldier of Fortune, Unreal Tournament, Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein (Return to Castle being my personal favourite) 🙂
Overwhelmingly negative on Steam. I skimmed the player reviews and everyone is saying the maps are too big for 3v3.
I don't think this is going to win anyone over.
The mostly negative rating on steam tells me all I need to know. I give it 6 months before this game is dead.
Only positive review on steam I can see and it's not even a positive, made me laugh though.
Upon completing my first game I turned off my pc and went outside. The first time in 5 months, thank you Highguard for giving me that experience.
Not my kind of game at all, but good luck to everyone who’s playing.
Just seems like a game that doesn't really stand out and I feel it won't have the legs to last over a long period of time.
Bring back battleborn.🤣🤣🤣
I've been watching someone play and honestly it doesn't look bad if you are playing with a couple of friends. The max teams of 3 might hurt it in though, I can't see playing this game with randoms being that enjoyable.
