Highguard is, in fact, real, and we’ve played it. Wildlight Entertainment, a collective of ex-Respawn developers, has launched a free-to-play PvP raid shooter, and after a couple of matches, we’re intrigued to sink some more time into it.
This is, admittedly, our very early impressions, but like many, we wanted to know the kind of game that Geoff Keighley was willing to bet his entire reputation on. After closing out The Game Awards, there has been radio silence, which led many to believe that another Concord was upon us.
That remains to be seen, but what we can say is that Highguard is an extremely polished shooter on PS5. It’s like the lovechild of Apex Legends and Valorant, focusing on tight-knit gunplay, hero abilities, and tactical teamplay.

Two teams of three will be assigned a base. A brief fortifying timer will allow you to tactically reinforce a select number of walls, similar to Rainbow Six Siege. Your aim regarding your base is to protect the generators within.
Then, the gear-up stage begins, where you will explore an open region of one of the game's five launch maps. You can hunt down weapon and armour chests, or focus on gathering a crystal currency, which can be spent at a vendor that’s dotted around the map.
Eventually, the Shieldbreaker will spawn into the map, and the two teams will fight for possession. Once acquired, you must take this blade to the enemy team’s base to call in your siege tower. This will break the base’s shield and mark the beginning of a raid.

You’ll then have a few minutes to infiltrate the base and plant bombs on the various generators, all with the hope of depleting the base’s health to zero.
That is quite a lot to wrap your head around, and that’s without really getting into the likes of the hero characters (Wardens), or weapon and armour tiers. However, there is a real back and forth that we really enjoyed.
One minute you're on the back foot desperately trying to defend your base, and the next you’re charging towards the enemy's base with a Sheildbreaker in hand. Unlike battle royales, you’re able to respawn quite frequently, so you’re never going too long without getting stuck into some action.

Matches are fairly lengthy, and we had some games upwards of 20 minutes. That gives you plenty of time to get tactical, claw back the advantage, or for it all to fall apart for you and your team.
One thing is for sure, though, and that’s the talent behind forging the gameplay experience. Like Titanfall 2 or Apex Legends, movement feels great. You’ll be jumping, sliding, ziplining, and even riding your horse across its maps, all while switching weapons, abilities, and grenades on the fly.
It’s a proper, polished shooter, made all the better with a rock-solid performance — at least on PS5 Pro. Visually, it’s also a very crisp-looking game, with a sort of muted, yet colourful fantasy backdrop. Disappointingly, an FOV slider is completely omitted, which seems odd for a shooter in 2026, meaning we're missing out on those wide-angle views.

Gun reload animations are properly satisfying with crunchy sound effects and unique animations for each weapon. On top of shooting, it gives every gun its own distinct feel.
Overall, we’re keen to sink more time into Highguard. It’s always fun getting to learn the ropes of some new shooter, and certainly, its PvP raid shooter approach feels unique within the space.
Will it translate into the live service hit Wildlight will certainly be hoping to become? In today’s market, who can really tell? But, for now, it looks nice, it feels nice to play, and it has some real potential for team playing strategy with an interesting and dynamic game mode.

@AaronBayne Zero interest in playing this, but thanks for the first impressions!
Watched a lot of streamers play it, yes the game looks/plays fine but definitely not for me
Edit: 3v3 on such a big map is a strange choice, I think 4v4 or 5v5 would do a lot better.
I’m curious but have so much to play I’ll see what the community decides. Some people are too quick to crap on games, because they forget what truly awful games are like.
"After closing out The Game Awards, there has been radio silence, which led many to believe that another Concord was upon us. That remains to be seen"
Just the fact that they are saying "it remains to be seen" still, after playing it, tells me all i need to know. Where's the confidence? Being a "concord" is the worst outcome imaginable. That game was shut down so fast after launch. And the article is still saying that's a possibility. Not what you want to hear in a hands on impressions piece
I’m glad people are giving this game praise. I strongly dislike a lot of gaming culture, where they hate on a game before it’s even released, and for no real reason, mind you, and attempt to sabotage work a developer worked hard on. It’s really disheartening. While the game isn’t for me, I happy to see it being good. I hope it finds an audience.
Yea I don't think this game is going to survive the next month or two, it is sitting at 21% on steam and has already lost half of its player count in just 4 hours, and on the PS Store it's sitting at 3.30/5 which is on the lower end for reviews on the PS Store.
I've been seeing a lot of people saying that they keep getting booted out of matches and that there is bafflingly no FOV slider on consoles, and that the maps are to big for a 3v3 game.
3v3 is personally an insane decision. With randoms that’s too small a team for collective responsibility.
Put an hour into it and yeah i deleted it. Its not bad its just boring and very bland.
Being torn to shreds on Steam lol.
Same crap, different theme, definitely not for me.
Played 2 games and deleted it not for me.
So yet another multiplayer shooter, how exciting 🙄....I know I'm probably showing my age, but by God do I long for the days of quality SP shooters; Half Life, Soldier of Fortune, Unreal Tournament, Quake, Doom, Wolfenstein (Return to Castle being my personal favourite) 🙂
Overwhelmingly negative on Steam. I skimmed the player reviews and everyone is saying the maps are too big for 3v3.
I don't think this is going to win anyone over.
The mostly negative rating on steam tells me all I need to know. I give it 6 months before this game is dead.
Only positive review on steam I can see and it's not even a positive, made me laugh though.
Upon completing my first game I turned off my pc and went outside. The first time in 5 months, thank you Highguard for giving me that experience.
Not my kind of game at all, but good luck to everyone who’s playing.
Just seems like a game that doesn't really stand out and I feel it won't have the legs to last over a long period of time.
Bring back battleborn.🤣🤣🤣
I've been watching someone play and honestly it doesn't look bad if you are playing with a couple of friends. The max teams of 3 might hurt it in the long run though, I can't see playing this game with randoms being that enjoyable.
@DennisReynolds My exact same experience and thoughts. One thing that confused me was that this is supposed to feel like an exciting siege/raid battle, yet it's only 3v3 and lacks music most of the time. It makes for a very underwhelming atmosphere.
It looks cool, just do not want to play online at all.
I think its ok, but until there is some kind of ranked I'm not sure how long it will keep peoples interest.
I think it would be better if it wasn't just 3v3 and if there were more teams on the map, similar to Wildgate which was released last year.
Actual players seem to think this is far more a dud then the mainstream game journalist take in there previews/early reviews...
Trust the people
Played about 3ish hours with my kids since we're snowed in at the moment. Game is the epitome of just okay, not really anything special about it. 3v3 seems way off based on the map sizes. Lack of real progression and depth aren't doing it any favors either. Don't see this one lasting too long tbh
Played one match so far. It was well made and I enjoyed it.
However its clearly meant for the sweaty crowd, of which I am not. So my time will be limited.
I was disappointed at the lack of AI enemies. I also think being more 3v3v3v3 or more players would have been better.
Not sure why everyone is slamming it tho. Classic internet beating up on the thing popular to beat up on. It's not bad by any means.
@Stragen8
I think it's mostly Geoff and the Game Award's fault. He hyped the thing up to high heaven and clearly it was simply just an ok game. When expectations are lifted so highly the scrutiny becomes all the harsher. At the very least its getting SOME attention. This seems like the kind of game that would otherwise sneak into steam and have like 100 players, if that.
@pyrrhic_victory pushsquare also said concord was a smioth shooter though.
Alt. article title: "Preview: Ignore The Haters, Highguard Is a Good PS5 Shooter We Can't Wait to Play More Of"
I did the tutorial and played a full round with randoms, it's pretty decent I thought. Nothing amazing, but I don't think it's worth all the hate it's getting.
@Oram77 very slow boring game to watch! Looks clunky and quite slow to play. The best part of the game is the horse mounting is very fluid! From what I could tell it only has one game mode. I think this will fade very quickly.
This genre in general has always been mediocre, but this looks exceptionally bland.
"but like many, we wanted to know the kind of game that Geoff Keighley was willing to bet his entire reputation on." I don't remember him betting his entire reputation on this game or any other. There seems to be a new hyperbolic theme surrounding the wordings of pushsquare articles at the moment. Anyway I've just downloaded this so I'll have a crack when I'm home from work later.
You guys loved Concord in your review so no offence but i'm not sure you are qualified to assess whether a game is going to be the next Concord or not. It certainly looks pretty generic and bland to me.
@Northern_munkey Geoff tweeted two days ago that “in 48 hours I will be accepting all your apologies!” (Not the exact quote) he definitely went to bat for this game
Concord was not FTP, just sayin. It was actually expensive for what it was...
Give the makers of this title a little break at least. No one is forcing any of us to play it.
@Boxmonkey not the same as betting your reputation though but I hear you.
Funny thing every year i complain about CoD but can't change it for any other fps. Everything looks and feels too messy or over complicated. And BF gunplay didn't click for me ;(
I hate these movements where it is fashionable to hate on a game no one has even played. Sometimes they turn out to be right, sometimes they turn out to be wrong and the game is decent.
The problem with the latter is that the game never recovers.
I don’t know if this game is good or bad, but I do know the reason for the hate campaign is the most stupid I’ve seen. It wouldn’t exist if the reveal had been in the middle of the show.
The 3v3 has really thrown me, like people said 5v5/6v6 would have been better. Seems like you'd need a deciated team and playing with randoms would be a nightmare. But ive it downloaded and will try after work.
Free game declared a bit poop by real gamers is nothing new. Tried loads of free ones to see and not one has a hook that calls me in. No I won't give them money. Looks nice mind.
@Dogbreath I put an hour in yesterday and that was enough for me. The movement and shooting feel good, but it has pretty poor display and controller options (no FOV slider is inexcusable when it's defaulted so tight). In fact overall I just think this is poor release for PS5 optimsation (no Pro support either).
The overall flow of a match just feels far too fussy; it's like they've shoehorned a bunch of Fortnite mechanics into something which is trying more to be like Quake Arena. This just isn't worth my time with so many great titles coming.
and and Potentially Great on PS5? is it not great on pc or xbox? just ps5?
Game has been torn to shreds on Steam, doesn't look good, looks DOA
I watched half of their video that the devs posted at release, and concluded it's basically Battleborn's Incursion mode.
That's good. People opted to hate this game because of the timing of a trailer. Isn't better to read and watch gameplay previews and maybe play the game for themselves before forming a opinion?
" we wanted to know the kind of game that Geoff Keighley was willing to bet his entire reputation on" . Wow, that's quite dramatic.
@Kraven joining the hate circle jerk makes them feel special like they part of some social movement validating their opinions
I've put in a few hours... It's aggressively okay and there is potential for improvement. My main gripe, and it seems a common one, is that 3v3 can make the map feel very empty... It almost feels like there should be mobs to kill like in a MOBA but instead you have a weird mining thing to do.
@EYEBALL Agreed, the shooting animations look like apex legends, the movement and some of the effects/abilities feel like a mix of overwatch and valorant but the theme and setting doesn't do it for me.
The FPS genre needs a big revamp.
@Toot1st There are also plenty of people in the "wait and see" crowd who feel just as special in my experience.
"I have a policy of only forming an opinion after i've played 50 hours and watched three let's plays. Look at how enlightened i am."
This truly is MidGuard.
Pass for me. I can't stand this genre of games. Also... "fairly lengthy, and we had some games upwards of 20 minutes". In what world is 20 minutes fairly lengthy? lol. Even a normal game of Mario Party is around 90 minutes.
Sounds interesting! Would be good to know how this performs on base PS5 in the preview, since that's what most people would be playing it on.
I really enjoyed my time with it yesterday. I do think it would be better as a 4v4 experience, but I had fun! Definitely unique, and there is a lot of strategy required. I will be playing it more as I enjoyed it!!
I played Concord for 3 hours and confirmed, what I already believed. It was not for me. The game was technically sound, highly polished (like all PS studios games), the gameplay was...fine. But the game was bland and derivative. Highguard looks pretty much the same...with horses. Not interested.
You guys call this a game? Whith potencial?! Seriously? Wtf?! Dont know nothing about games. Srry but who likes those fortnites, crap, garbages, pvp games?! What a real crap! Playing for decades and i need read about this. The time pass and everything is changing. Shame to see talk about craps like this more and more and have reason about it. Just one more crap to see failing.
I played this for around 2 hours today. It's just bad. It''s generic and doesn't do anything very well. It's basically just a lazy game made by a developer that isn't good enough to make a real game. I gave it a chance but it deserves the negative reviews not just because of the game award fiasco. People are tired of these garbage copycats. It's time to create new things like they did in the past. The classics are classics because they only cared about making a good game. No agendas or metrics.
Pfft I couldn't care less how much time they have spent on the game, the F2P market needs to die, I hope it bombs hard.
My impression after one match (all I had time for on launch night) wasn't great. Yesterday I played again for longer and with a friend this time and had a lot of fun.
I feel like the game needs a bit of investment to understand the different phases and aspects (wardens, guns, bases, maps, raid tools) and know what you're meant to be doing to improve your chances of winning and having more fun.
No idea what people are complaining about with map size, you get around them fast on a mount and can even teleport to base, near your ally holding a shieldbreaker or on Mara's ult. 3v3 just like in Apex feels like a good number to have things more controlled in a fight.
Maybe they could add a 3v3v3 mode in future but the bases would need less health so matches don't run too long, plus the maps have been designed for 2 bases so that wouldn't really work.
Maybe people just want constant action with no base fortification or looting phases? The breather between raid phases helps you reset and prepare so they are there for a reason.
Looks like another flop to me. Generic team shooter.
When has one been sucessful of late? I feel like most have flopped in the last years. They keep making them though, hoping it will stick on the wall.
