In this year's State of the Game Industry survey, held by the Game Developers Conference, developers were asked which platforms they prefer to make games for, and the results are quite interesting.

Over 2,300 individuals were questioned in the survey, and were asked which platforms interest them most as a developer. Respondents could select as many options as they liked.

The most popular answer was PC, which was selected by 80 per cent of developers, which makes perfect sense.

In second place, and the most popular home console, was PS5; 40 per cent of respondents chose it as a platform for which they wanted to make games.

By contrast, 39 per cent selected Switch 2, and just 20 per cent said Xbox Series X|S, half the amount of PS5.

As reported by VGC, this may show a downward trend in sentiment for Microsoft's console; the same survey reveals 40 per cent of respondents released their last game on Xbox Series X|S (47 per cent on PS5).

Elsewhere in the survey, developers were asked what factors are most important to them when considering which platforms to support. Audience reach was the most popular answer at 78 per cent, with business model success (44 per cent) and discoverability (43 per cent) in second and third.

It's an interesting insight into how the various platforms stack up. While PC is probably always going to be the top choice, it looks like PS5 is an attractive console option mainly because there's a sizeable audience there.
