Ninja Gaiden has already had a moment in the sun with the very warmly received side-scrolling entry Ninja Gaiden: Ragebound, but it seems the upcoming full-blown 3D action title might also do the series proud.
Ninja Gaiden 4 is the first brand new numbered sequel in over a decade, and a recent round of previews are almost universally glowing. Developed by both Team Ninja and PlatinumGames, it's looking like the hack and slash actioner will be exactly what fans are hoping for when it launches in October.

Understandably, the previews are primarily concerned with the combat and how the game feels to control. Most outlets agree that Ninja Gaiden 4 feels fantastic, with cutthroat, challenging bouts against even basic enemies, and a multitude of options at your disposal.
This includes a variety of classic moves such as the Izuna Drop and Flying Swallow, moves that both protagonists — newcomer Yakumo and Ryu himself — can utilise in battle.
Both characters will have different abilities, though; Yakumo has a Bloodraven form that beefs up his attacks and allows him to tank hits in order to deliver devastating follow-ups. You can also use this to counter otherwise unblockable attacks.
Ryu has a Gleam form instead, which is more about relentlessly fast attacks that cut enemies to ribbons.
It's also noted in most previews that the series' trademark level of challenge is present and correct, rewarding precise play and punishing a haphazard, gung-ho approach. On top of that are plenty of accessibility options, meaning that whether you want the game as hard as possible or easier to get through, you should be able to find difficulty options to suit.
Here are some quotes from various outlets:

That's a feeling I'm more than familiar with from the older Ninja Gaiden games, and as I splash buckets of blood all over Tokyo – both my own and my enemies' – I'm shocked that even after all these years they've finally gone back to basics to give us a new one of these. It's a feeling I've not had since Devil May Cry 5, and didn't expect to have again. Now, time to transform into a big drill and carve through goons, quoth the raven.

It’s rare when you wait for a game for more than a decade and it finally comes and it seems to be everything you wanted and more, but so far, Ninja Gaiden 4 is shaping up to be that game. October 21 can’t come fast enough.

I adored my time with this Ninja Gaiden 4 demo. The vertical slice provided is Team Ninja and PlatinumGames operating at their best, combining phenomenal action combat with gratuitous violence and crushingly hard difficulty. And if you’ve got that soulslike fatigue setting in, fear not, as there isn’t a drop of the FromSoftware formula to be found anywhere in Ninja Gaiden 4. It’s Ninja Gaiden-style action through and through.
TheGamer
There’s still a lot about Ninja Gaiden 4 that I don’t know after just two hours with it, but my time was enough to bury nearly all of my worries. Platinum’s influence can definitely be felt in some big ways, but nearly every change and evolution feels like it’s for the better. It’s still too early to tell, but Ninja Gaiden 4 truly might be a new peak for the series, and I can’t wait to find out for sure.

Yes the game looks amazing..... but after seeing Phantom Blade Zero I know where my hype is.
Welcome back, Ninja Gaiden.
I've watched some of these previews and i don't see anything that makes me worry it would be another vanilla NG 3 or that garbage Yaiba. It looks slick, brutal, and fun just like NG 1 & 2.
I also like how they gave Ryu a sprint button and the camera pans out more but the enemies still attack you from off screen just like old NG 😘
But i read some concern from a couple of "old fans" who thinks the air juggle combo makes this game less Ninja Gaiden and more Bayonetta, MG Rising, or DMC. I say that concern is pure bollocks lol.
@Oram77 Well there's no one who say you can only get hype for one game. So why not hype for both games?
@PuppetMaster I did say NG4 looks amazing, all I'm saying is my hype levels are higher for PB0, no hate towards this game, just expressing my feelings.
@Oram77 I didn't say you hate this game sir. But ok i get it now that your hype level is higher for Phantom Blade and that's fair.
@Oram77 Agreed. Shifting to a new protagonist puts me off a bit (yes, I know Ryu is in it, but he seems to be a secondary character?) And the neo-tokyo anime style aesthetic isn't really doing it for me.
On the other hand, PB0 seems to have a much grittier look, with the same fluid combat and a variety of fun weapons to use, making it seem like a spiritual successor to me. Eagerly awaiting reviews/ a demo!
This game looks more like a spiritual sequel to Metal Gear Rising than a sequel to Ninja gaiden. I'm really excited.
Probably my second favourite game series after Uncharted. I love the look of this and it's going to be a day one buy for me.
I'm definitely in the minority but I really liked NG3 and N3:RE.
I'm definitely gonna buy this game but not day 1 since they will probably release a "complete"/"upgraded" version of NG4 (Black, Sigma, or Razor's Edge).
@PuppetMaster This seems like classic Ninja Gaiden to me too. I think it looks incredible, and I have no worries at all on whether or not it will deliver. I do wonder if Ryu will be able to use a variety of weapons like in 2, but it doesn’t matter either way. I can’t wait for this.
Im just glad these types of games are coming back, me personally im over stamina bars.
“And if you’ve got that soulslike fatigue setting in, fear not, as there isn’t a drop of the FromSoftware formula to be found anywhere in Ninja Gaiden 4.”
Phew, that makes me much happier. Can’t wait!
@Kraven Yeah it would be weird if Ryu can't used different weapons. I hope at least Ryu get nunchuks, dual katana, and falcon talons.
Team Ninja rarely misses. Platinum may have a miss or two, but also some epic, amazing games. With these two at the helm it pretty much guarantees greatness!
@Oram77 mean considering Both are quite a bit apart why not play both if Both are good, especially considering hack and slash games are few and far between today
Ninja Gaiden is my favourite game series of all time. Cant wait
Not a fan of Platinum honestly, but I love Team Ninja.
Never played before and Ragebound makes me much more excited than the main games. Maybe I give this one a go because of Gamepass.
it’s no metal gear rising revengeance (THE GOAT HACK N SLASH) but i’m glad platinum is behind it!!
@Oram77 @J2theEzzo
After seeing the hour long footage of Ninja Gaiden 4 on YouTube with Ryu that was just released, it looks exactly like Ninja Gaiden with its fast paced and frantic action and so for me, it looks way better than Phantom Blade.
Phantom Blade looks good too but it seems far more action RPG orientated, enemies take longer to kill and the combos are automatic.
@nomither6 Looks way better than Metal Gear Rising.
@TruestoryYep no it doesn’t
@TruestoryYep I've read things to the contrary from some sites, where they've played it. On PC gamer (sorry push!) they suggest it feels more akin to a platinum games action title than it does a true successor to the series. Although it does appear that Ryu feels/ plays closer to past games than the new protagonist.
That said, would have to agree with your thoughts about PB0... autocombos and sponger enemies- though I hope that latter part is worked on!
@nomither6 Have to agree. I've been waiting (what feels like) all my life for someone to make a new Rising, or rerelease/ remake it. That glorified plasma cutting needs to be done in HD, and with 60fps. It's too good to be left to the past!
@pharos_haven I know, its ridiculous to have stamina bars when playing a power fantasy character.. who wants to play an old man, or fat youngin'!?
