The PS5 versions do raytracing, higher framerates, faster loading, smaller file sizes, and haptic feedback (amongst other exclusive hardware enabled features), none of which the PS4 can/will do...
So why again is it pointless?
As it is, my PS4 struggles and screams from time to time with these games. The exact reason I haven't bought Miles Morales yet, and the exact reason I plan to play FF7RI & Nioh 2 over again from scratch. I've also bought the PS4 versions of Dirt 5 & WRC 9 & haven't really dived into them yet because I want to experience them with full bells & whistles + haptic/adaptive feedback on my 4KTV.
XBox is Microsoft & Microsoft is XBox. They are trying so hard to make "the console" irrelevant. Cross-play, release games on PC, XCloud, GamePass, etc. And to some degree, Sony's been playing into their hand. But if Sony buys into it all the way, it will make the PlayStation as irrelevant as the XBox. And in that space, Microsoft wins. Unless Sony does their own "PlayStation on PC" store and battles MS toe to toe, I don't see this favorably for them.
$70 for 12h-15h of play isn't doing it for me. Especially considering comment #36 from Sammy about the lack of originality.
To each their own tho'. Hope fans get their money's worth out of this. What IS there seems solid enough.
Still, this one will likely end up, up for debate & also "12hR One AnD DOne exPEEriENC HUr dUrr!!!" fuel for people subscribing to platform bashing/console wars.
@Casco Because it was originally announced as a multiplat. Minecraft is also multiplat. And there are countless other reasons listed here in the comments by others.
I like controlling the games i have access to. I have hundreds of games already and a curated backlog. Paying a subscription to have access to a library of games I don't care for, isn't for me. I also tend to stick to 3-4 singular games at a time over the course of several months. Sometimes, I'll pick a game up, put it down, then come back to it several years later. When a new game that you're really interested in, doesn't come to GamePass, you still have to buy it or be at MS's mercy while you wait in hopes of it being added, so you may likely end up paying more in the long run, as there are still games you have to buy. Even worse still, is GamePass may give players less incentive to buy new releases, thus making production of bigger projects not on GamePass unfeasible. I'd rather be in more control of the games I have access to, and not have to pay a subscription to do so. I also feel that subscription services will have other negative effects on the quality of games in the long term.
@Fenbops Never claimed it to be "okay when Sony does it". But how Sony does it "timed exclusives &/or long running partnerships/co-development of exclusive ip w/ direct Sony involvement, etc. seems better to me. I was suprised by Capcom going exclusive for SFV, but it didn't effect me negatively. But if XBox players were upset that a game that was originally multiplat was suddenly now exclusive to one platform, I wouldn't waste my breath telling them they're wrong for feeling that way. It's an easily understandable sentiment.
It's simple... The fact that they took a game that was originally multiplat and made it exclusive, isn't sitting well with me. It's logical from a business standpoint. But it makes me view them more negatively than if they had done it with a new/unannounced ip.
Not sure why that's hard for you to understand... Unless you're self centered and can't perceive views outside of your own.
Is it weird that this makes me want an Series x even less now? Weird knock on effect, I guess. But I would look at Microsoft more favorably if they kept this one multiplat... Oh well...
Plus VR support for every single racing, flying, vehicle driven, and FPS game available. Make the development tools easy for 3rd party develepors to get to grips with/plug-n-play.
Open the freakin' VR floodgates!!! If it has a first person perspective, then add VR support!!!
It's actually an ingenious marketing tool for Sony, as it permits showcasing games/networking. Many of my friends have bought games thanks to that feature. I wonder if they realize it can have that effect?
@huyi Actually, it works very well with the PS4 controller (motion controls). So well, it encouraged me to go out and buy the aim controller to further immerse myself in the experience.
@smythelove If you bought digital, then claiming it for PS+ is impossible since you already own it.
@ATaco "Useless"? The PS5 IS backwards compatible you know?
Early supporters (people that actually bought the game) get a free PS5 upgrade. It's only the PS4 PS+ version that does not. Just view the PS5 version as a new game, A remake of the REMAKE. And the PS4 version is the "old" game, given away for free. If you bought the game, you're blessed with a free upgrade. If you didn't, you're still blessed with a free critically acclaimed, less than 1 year old, triple-A game. Wins are being handed out and people are complaining. I don't get it.
If you haven't bought a PSVR, PLEASE, download Farpoint anyway! It's one of the best examples of a VR shooter, and the game gradually eases you into VR in a fun, accessible, and exciting way. Even if you don't necessarily like fps games, GET IT! I don't really like fps's all that much, but this was easily one of, if not, the best experiences I've had in the genre. It also has plenty of options to mitigate motion sickness, which I actually don't use at all. The game is a must have for PSVR owners imo.
@thefourfoldroot I bought the aim controller for Fairpoint recently from Best Buy. The gameplay experience was transformative. Definitely worth it to me, and I hope more fps games implement VR + Aim Controller functionality in the future. After playing farpoints co-op mode, I would love a co-op shooter campaign mode, with Fairpoint's functionality. A game like Titan Fall 3 with VR + Aim Controller functionality would be a blast!
At $70, it could've at least been a co-op adventure game to enjoy with a friend or two. Looks good, but I'll be waiting on this one. Might even end up being a pass based on reviews and other games available. It just doesn't have "must buy" appeal to me.
However, I understand, being in their shoes. Smaller initial install base, due to less PS5's in households than PS4's, and being locked to PS5 means less initial sales. So starting with a higher initial price will offset it until the playerbase increases and potential numbers go up. It makes sense, but it won't work in the favor of every game released, and I'm sure Sony will come to see that. They need to both stand firm and simultaneously tread lightly on this one imo.
@GKO900 But why? VR is amazing. It should be a viewing option in mainline games. Racing and shooting in VR becomes more accurate. There's nothing like it. It's far more than, just a gimmick.
I can understand if you're simply not interested. But I can't fathom how self centered you have to be to completely discredit something that's endeared by so many.
@GKO900 I hate to be the one to take the bait (actually, I don't mind at all... hmm...), but you do know the PSVR was actually incredibly successful, right? Ouyselling most other VR headsets on the market?
And you do also know that the teams making hardware (controllers, consoles, VR headsets, etc.), and the teams making software (video games, apps, firmware updates, etc.) are different groups entirely and are only loosely related as far as development choices go?
TL;DR: VR headset production has no bearing on preventing a game from being made, and at most, provides a platform for a wider variety of games. Not a lesser variety.
All you people pointing out the obvious & criticizing what it was, don't seem to have an understanding that this is what 'NEXT' was supposed to remedy. Yes, it's dead, yes, it falls short, thus the reason for the overhaul in the first place!
I say, if they really plan on killing the project, they should at least release what they've developed so far & gauge consumer feedback. The game has tremendous potential, and it would be foolish of them to trash such a unique asset, imo. PS5 & XSX only serve to boost how far they can go with this project. And it could spawn a series if they handle it correctly and maintain goodwill w/ their fanbase.
A little irritated by this review because it truly isn't fair in my opinion. Please re-review this by someone who actually plays & understands racing sims please. sounds like this person was expecting Mario Kart. It's the equivalent of complaining about the difficulty in a "Souls" game.
Traction is divided between accelerating, braking, & turning. Too much of one, takes traction away from the other.
First reduce your speed appropriately before entering the corner (a dynamic-colored racing line will show you the appropriate entry speed by raising and changing color at braking points) & don't lock up the tires (the Adaptive Triggers should help you feel this).
Ease off of the brake and get harder on the steering (the dynamic racing line will fade to green and lay down). Steering is most important mid turn, so braking and throttle should be lightest.
Upon exiting turns, you apply more throttle as you begin easing off of the steering.
Racing basics^. There are plenty of assists in the options. But like all things, practice makes perfect. It's not something that should be rated negatively by someone impatiently trying to get to grips with it quickly in order to meet a review deadline. And it shouldn't weigh negatively against its score either.
Once the combat system clicks, there's no going back. It may genuinely ruin other action adventure games for some people, as it officially set a new standard for me.
Money. They thought "exclusivity deal money" was a good idea. Back when the deal was made, there wasn't +110M PS4's sitting in global households and exclusivity made more sense. It brought MLB fans to the PS platform and put some money in both parties pockets. With last gen still being supported and next gen here as well, potential sales go up, so the cost of exclusivity may just be too high.
Idk, but regardless the exposure of a Sony game on XBox, may actually work in Sony's favor. Especially if the game does well. I'm sure it will have some Dual Sense features on PS5 tho', so PS will likely still be the best place to play.
Really hoping for the return of an updated Course Maker (w/ the GPS Track Path Editor functionality that was spoken on in the past), as well as classics like Deep Forest, Midfield, Hong Kong, etc. I'd like to see them do more with their rally as well, and introduce some tight & technical point to point time trials.
Multiplayer needs to be updated so the host can make a playlist/race series with a points system. Maybe even allow teams so up to 8 teams can race in a 16 player lobby, scoring points toward the series finale. They added some drift challenges in GT Sport, but why not have it in multiplayer for drift lobbies? Basically, just more variety for the vast community of GT/motorsport fans.
Lastly, I really don't understand why driving GT & more sims don't allow for more cusomization/body kits. They exist in real life and provide various physics/performance based effects. Would be great to have the best of both worlds from arcade & GT in one place. Deep customization & GT physics.
No changes, just confirmations. I think it depends on underlying factors, like cost, ease of implementation, and if Sony coughs up cash for exclusive features, or MS coughs up cash for platform parity. The easiest thing to do, would be to port over the version with the most compromises for weaker hardware over to the more powerful one, so it will likely be a case by case scenario, as it also depends on how strict Sony's standards are, as games still need to get the okay from them. The playerbase is also going to set the standard, as games that fall short or likely to be criticized and met with some backlash, so it will be in developers best interest to push the features of the hardware, as the consumers are who have the final say-so on what flies.
Can't help but feel that some people are mistaking various other steps in the breakdown as being necessary for increasing storage space. Adding storage should be really simple. Remove a panel, remove a screw. Plug in & it's done.
It's simpler than changing the internal hdd in the PS4 for a SSD. And whatever you install, adds to the 825gb of space instead of replacing it. So a 2TB SSD will give you 2.825TB of overall space (before formatting & accounting for the OS & such).
Folders for video clips & screenshots that we can label as we were able to on PS3.
Video plug-ins for messages instead of having to use links that open up the browser.
Being able to share short clips and animated gifs.
The ability to host watch parties using any video streaming service/app, and if possible, any movie bought/rented from the PS Store (watch parties = sychronized video stream that is controlled by one host to multiple viewers).
Listening parties with PS Music/Spotify would be cool too.
The ability to sort trophies the way we can on trophy websites (progress, difficulty, platinum acquired/not acquired, etc.).
Better Shareplay functionality. Use your own game if you own the same game as the host, to share controller, thus eliminating input lag when assisting a friend.
Optional video chat w/ PIP functionality during gaming (choose who to share video w/ the same way you can mute audio, or verify video sharing upon chat entry).
Icon/text/notification customization that includes color, font, transparency, size, layout, etc.
PIP for a message chat conversation that allows you to scale down the window to the size of a cellphone screen on your TV, but still see pictures, video clips, etc.
Notification overlay OVER LIVESTREAMS instead of Livestreams OVERLAYING OVER NOTIFICATIONS, so viewers don't see a random giant black box every time a message is received.
Better PS Store navigation. Improved loading of screenshots (they do not load on more than 2/3 of the games listed, regardless of download speeds/bandwith).
These features would be a start. Mark Cerny already mentioned most everything else I'd want, but quick resume/save states on 3 or more games would be a bonus.
I've been waiting for this to come state side forever. Wasn'tan online gamer during the Dreamcast days, yet still bought & loved PSO 1 & 2. Please release it on PlayStation!
With Season passes, DLC, microtransactions, loot boxes, and battle passes now being a thing, we're already paying far more than $70.
Also, I don't see why consoles are getting a price hike, when PC games are constantly sold cheaper, yet have higher quality assets & settings available for high end builds that can run them. If console goes up, PC should as well. If not, I call bs.
PC games have been getting "Smart Delivery" forever. Console games are just locked/optimized for the SKU, based on what the console can do. PC has the settings unlocked, and customizable/optimizable by the user, so PC's as weak as a XB1 or as powerful as a Series X, and everything in between, can run the game how the user desires. Rarely do they do "definitive editions" for PC, and indstead just drop texture packs/updates. So it makes sense that we shouldn't have to pay on consoles for what would essentially be a mere update on PC. I imagine when GTA V/Online updates for PS5/Series X, an update will become available on PC to accommodate it. It's a rip off otherwise in most other games, as they're not recreating the game from the ground up. They're just flicking switches & locking settings. Although, GTA V might just be one of the few that actually do enhancements and actual worthwhile expansions that make it somewhat worth it.

Visuals, audio, and feel! Tied with gameplay, story, fun factor, pacing, etc.
People want to know how in-depth the haptics are from title to title!
Re: PS5's SSD Has Developer Dreaming Big and Thinking of New Frontiers
Re: How Closely Were You Watching the PS5 Teardown Video?
9/10. Really didn't know there were 3 USB - A ports... Cool stuff either way.
Re: PS5 Teardown Video Proves Immensely Popular with Huge View Count
Can't help but feel that some people are mistaking various other steps in the breakdown as being necessary for increasing storage space. Adding storage should be really simple. Remove a panel, remove a screw. Plug in & it's done.
It's simpler than changing the internal hdd in the PS4 for a SSD. And whatever you install, adds to the 825gb of space instead of replacing it. So a 2TB SSD will give you 2.825TB of overall space (before formatting & accounting for the OS & such).
Not that big a deal.
Re: PS4 Games Will Take Advantage of PS5's New User Experience Features
UI features I'd like...
Re: Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Is Grinding onto PS4 Next Year in Japan
I've been waiting for this to come state side forever. Wasn'tan online gamer during the Dreamcast days, yet still bought & loved PSO 1 & 2. Please release it on PlayStation!
Re: Poll: Would You Pay $70 for a Brand New PS5 Game?
With Season passes, DLC, microtransactions, loot boxes, and battle passes now being a thing, we're already paying far more than $70.
Also, I don't see why consoles are getting a price hike, when PC games are constantly sold cheaper, yet have higher quality assets & settings available for high end builds that can run them. If console goes up, PC should as well. If not, I call bs.
Re: Xbox Is Pushing for Free Next-Gen Upgrades, And That's Good News for PS5
