@uptownsoul Okay but when I said it was 43% to 31% you said I was “wrong” because I wasn’t including PS4 at 15% - okay fair enough; but now I’m comparing PS as a whole to Xbox as a whole you’ve again told me i’m wrong and that actually we are just talking about PS5. I keep being “wrong” because you keep changing what you’re talking about.
Anyway I get it; PS is outselling Xbox. Very good for Playstation but let’s hope we don’t get too much of a landslide as that will not be a good thing. Thanks for the discussion 👍
@uptownsoul it’s not a disaster. Everyone knows Xbox has a smaller market share than Playstation. The fact that 31% (we are talking about one game here, but still) are on Xbox is actually alright! I’m actually quite impressed you can be dramatic all you want but I can imagine Capcom is glad it released on Xbox too.
@uptownsoul my bad yea so it’s 58% to 31%. Any Dev would be happy to have that 31% from Xbox - it’s not quite the disaster all these articles make it out to be.
@uptownsoul interestingly that says for Resident Evil Physical and Digital combined; 43% were Playstation and 31% were Xbox. And the Push Square article that just focused on Physical said 80% was Playstation. Now one is for a week and one is for a month but that basically sums it up. Playstation has the better sales but if you look at digital as well as physical; the difference isn’t anywhere near as big.
I mean I remember a lot of whinging on this site when Psychonauts was only digital and saw a lot of comments about how it was too high a price to pay for digital. The reason i’m saying that is because on the Xbox side, buying a full price digital copy of a game is just what you do. I just think these figures are (fairly*) pointless when they don’t show the whole picture. I’m sure if it was just digital sales in the charts, that would be a bit useless too.
*I say fairly pointless as it doesn’t show you sales as a whole - but definitely does show an interesting statistic regardless. Xbox’s physical showing is pretty bad. And I don’t like the boxart as much. To be fair I didn’t like PS4 boxart design either but PS5 looks goood with the white.
Kena won’t even be in these charts for a couple of months yet as it doesn’t include digital. Since digital is such a huge chunk of sales these days; these charts don’t tell us much unfortunately.
This is actually crazy - but it is only Physical right?
One weak area for Xbox is their physical releases (as we all know) so I am fully digital with Xbox and I assume lots of others are. I bought this digitally on Series X yesterday and loved the hour or so I played so far. Really wanted to support it early on but I fear I am one of very few who will. Good for Playstation; bad for Xbox unless the digital figures are much different.
I feel like this article title needs to clarify that this is physical only.
@Shepherd_Tallon I get what you’re saying. But the problem isn’t with those that aren’t concerned by things and therefore don’t comment.
The problem is with the comments actively defending these practices. The more they do it, the more others have to complain to be the louder voice. If Sony is seeing comments/tweets/general buzz and it’s all in their defence; why should they bother changing?
I’m glad I made comments regarding my stance on Sony’s original decision. And this is why. Stop giving Sony consent to stick it in you when it hurts. Not going to name names but jeez some people love defending Sony.
@SJBUK another way of making a difference is to comment about it. If there is enough outcry they might actually listen; but it sounds like you would rather I didn’t post my comment criticising them. That makes no sense.
When Xbox announced the XBL Gold price rise; the outcry got them to reverse it. It was a BS move and they were called out on it. If the Sony fanboys stopped blindly following Sony, it would actually do them some good.
It can be hard to have a balanced discussion; since everyone has their biases. But I try to be as objective as I can. You don’t need to tell me i’m wasting my time; I can decide that for myself.
@SJBUK I do prefer their system. But I love video games and Playstation has some incredible experiences. But the cost and experience of playing them could be so much better. As someone who loves the video game industry - It’s actually a massive shame to me.
Anyway I just wanted to leave my comment on this thread just like the other 300 people have. I’m allowed to do so.
@Fenbops Unfortunately they are just shooting themselves in the foot in the long run. The only thing keeping Sony in check at the moment… is Microsoft.
Edit: and actually people in the industry like @get2sammyb who are speaking up against it.
Defending Sony over this is ridiculous; but to be expected from a certain bunch! All the other anti-consumer moves Sony has pulled have also been defended and that is why they know they can get away with things like this.
Also downplaying Smart Delivery is just a desperate attempt to knock the competition. Smart Delivery is extremely good (though it should be standard at this point). I can load up a game on my Series X, then go upstairs and continue on my One X (though in lesser quality, but as best optimised for that console as it can be). Also with many (but not all, I don’t think) you get the PC version included too. And it’s all part of the same ecosystem and basically like it’s one game, but plays as best as it can on each. And your save game comes with you. That is so good.
The fact that anyone without a Series X yet can buy games on their Xbox One and know they will get the Series X version waiting for them when they finally get a console; and with their save game ready for them to continue - is a huge peace of mind for the consumer.
But sure let’s defend having to buy multiple versions, no ease of backwards movement, and awkward save transfers. And look forward to what Sony pulls next 👌.
@Salt_AU you mean like Avengers? (Which is worse because it’s to do with actual content).
Or in fact ANY multi-platform game in history that doesn’t have pixel parity between systems.
I never played the first but playing this on Series X and i’m around 9 hours in and I am loving it. The cast of characters is so good. Probably my GOTY so far also (maybe alongside It Takes Two).
I just left this article but had to come back to say I immediately found myself whistling one of the tracks from this game without meaning to. Funny how that subliminally happens.
The great thing, for me, about Gamepass is being able to download games and not just stream them. So that would have to be a thing on Netflix for it to work for a lot if people. Not everyone of course as some are happy to stream; but for a lot…
I’ve recently been trying to retroactively fill in my HowLongToBeat profile with games i’ve completed over the years; and obviously it’s hard to remember them all (unless they have achievement/trophy timestamps ) but getting to the PS2; a lot of what I remember is the Dynasty Warriors (2-5) series. Not exactly the best games but they were great to me. Also things like LOTR Two Towers and Return of the King. So yea not exactly critical darlings but some of the most fun I had on the system and therefore what I remember first off the top of my head (and yea okay Vice City too…).
@JJ2 I mean with a topic like this of course you will talk about Gamepass. It’s the competition and the logical reason why there is such a gap in physical sales between platforms.
Xbox has been the worst with physical releases for a good while now; but digitally they seem a lot better equipped and I have a huge digital collection with them going back to 2006 (a lot of which I can still play on my Series X). I just see physical (on PS and Xbox) as a bit of a waste and I very rarely do it anymore. Last physical I bought between those 2 was Kingdom Hearts 3 on Xbox and… I should have just got it digital.
For some reason I do get physical on switch but I think that’s just that I like cartridges. They’re probably not much better than the CD Keys that are on the disks.
Also yea we are at a point in the Industry now where just giving Physical sales and ignoring Digital is just one half of the story. Crazy how fast it has shifted but with the internet and all these patches etc, physical is kind of getting left behind.
@KippDynamite you can still buy games on Xbox - everyone seems to ignore that point. Gamepass is an additional choice; which is great. More choice the better.
To be honest, “ownership” on both PS and Xbox isn’t the best with disks being like unlock keys. I feel like every game I buy I don’t really own anyway (realised this too late for sure). So Gamepass works great at reducing the stress of the whole thing.
Still buy physical for Switch though as I love a good cartridge 👌
@KidBoruto ah I thought it could be. Thanks buddy. Just wasn’t sure if it was Trials of Mana situation where we got the old version of the game and then a new version soon after.
I’m confused by this. It’s coming out later this month… but it’s due out in August? I was going to order the physical import for switch which is due 24th June but; what is the August release all about?
@Col_McCafferty true! The deep pockets definitely help. I guess Sony would have to tailor the service to fit them. They have been doing great with PS+ lately so maybe some kind of hybrid as people have suggested before. Doesn’t need to be a straight up copy; but my point was more about immature fans trashing something even though it’s good just because it’s not on their console; which I am so bored of.
With regards to giving Microsoft your money… I mean; if they offer a game that you think is worth playing for the price it will cost you; don’t let their name stand in the way. No one will know that you played a “Microsoft” game. Would be a shame to miss out on something great if you have access to it. I think you and I have had a similar discussion before and I appreciate that i’m not/no longer on your blocklist
@Royalblues I know; it’s hard to be objective. But would be great if we could all determine what was and wasn’t good for the gaming industry going forward and kind of push for that? Playstation has some incredible single-player games and though it’s less discussed; Xbox has some incredible Multiplayer experiences. I’m loving the way things are going at the moment and i’m excited for it all! Just wish the toxicity/immaturity wouldn’t drive away that which is beneficial (just like playstation fans trashing gamepass instead of asking Sony to match it/best it - such a waste).
Though if i’m completely honest; I have in the past called out Sony for copying Xbox with things like trophies etc. But actually that just made it a more standardised thing and i’m glad they did it.
Everyone whinging that Phil took a “shot” at Sony (even though he just stated a fact; he is allowed to mention other strategies) but when Jim says something about Xbox it’s all fair game? At least Phil doesn’t backtrack 5 seconds later.
I think what annoys me is that Phil Spencer has actually been extremely good for Xbox; which in turn is good for the gaming industry. He will most likely stay in the gaming industry for his career. Maybe moving around companies; we need more people in the industry like him. Not Jim Ryan. And Playstation fans should actually be wanting that too. But instead they complain about a good thing out of blind loyalty.
Yea they lied but in a way to take a shot at Xbox. And then all the chavs joined in. And then it all backfired. They should have just looked at Xbox and realised that actually this cross-gen thing could work; and actually thought about it; instead of being petty.
And exactly. Thing is, If Microsoft steps up and starts doing timed exclusivity as much as Sony (which is very possible) then it’s just going to get worse and worse. And then both bases will suffer unnecessarily; and then the fanboys will complain, but it will be too late. Actual exclusives are a different story and are a necessity.
@Beasley2K genuine question: does Sony have a hand in FFXVI development? I actually don’t know either way but if they don’t then all they have done is “paid money to take it away from other platforms”.
@velio84 yes you have found a game that is on Gamepass and isn’t on Playstation. But as my quote says “being on Gamepass doesn’t mean it’s not on Playstation” - that still stands. It’s not a rule.
Your original comment was about Microsoft spending money to get games onto Gamepass. Which yes they do but being on Gamepass is different to being a timed exclusive. That was my point.
@velio84 I never said Microsoft doesn’t have any and in fact I said the opposite. The Gamepass deal is separate from something like timed exclusivity I should think.
@Katsuhono I mean the price discrepancy is a different story. I don’t know what to say about that. Sometimes (in sales for instance) games are cheaper on Xbox and sometimes they are cheaper on Playstation. I guess at that point it’s up to the individual to decide if the value is worth it.
@4kgk2 if they sell that badly on Xbox then why the need for Sony to secure exclusivity? At that point surely the goodwill is more valuable than a few lost sales.
Also yes of course if a game comes out a year later on Xbox it’s not going to sell as well.
@velio84 being day one on Gamepass doesn’t mean it’s not on Playstation though, so PS only gamers can still play the game. Also Final Fantasy may have benefited from Sony in the past, but it’s one of the biggest Gaming franchises now. Microsoft shouldn’t pay for a year of Assassin’s Creed exclusivity just because it benefits Ubisoft.
I always feel weird commenting on this site with something that is defending Microsoft; but I just feel like people here bring up what Microsoft is doing to justify what Sony is doing; rather than imagining if Microsoft did the same as Sony how would they feel. I’m lucky enough to have access to all the consoles (too many) but it sucks straight up for people that don’t.
If they could both stop with the timed exclusives that would be so good. Microsoft does it occasionally but Sony is a million times worse (extending the exclusiveness of FFVIIR for example). Timed exclusives are one of the worst things about the industry. And Sony brags when they secure them.
Edit: oh and I see people defending it. Just remember (as this is a PS site), Microsoft has a LOT more money than Sony and, if they wanted to, could start securing a lot more timed exclusives. Think about whether you would like that, before you defend timed exclusives.
@Rob_230 I really appreciate the list - what an effort! A lot I have played on other consoles which is more on me for buying the Vita so late.
Something like Tokyo Xanadu looks cool but again its £40 on vita and currently £10 on PS4 on sale. This means Vita will lose out almost every time
I want to try the Danganronpa series too but again it’s gonna be cheaper on PS4. I think I will get Tearaway and maybe Sly 4 since it’s a fair price to download. And then keep an eye on Trails OCS and Tales of Hearts. I think Hotline Miami is on sale at the moment and i’ve not played those.
Theres a couple there I don’t know much about so will look into - soul sacrifice, hatsune miku, muramasa. Thanks a lot.
@Rob_230 well for the most part RPGs which of course I know it has a lot of. But they seem to be more expensive on the Vita than anywhere else; but thats why I mentioned Trails of cold steel.
Otherwise 3D platformers which the console seems to be heavily lacking in. I actually have the Sly trilogy from cross buy and I have the Ratchet trilogy. Jak I have on PS4 so no need.
To be fair I should try Tearaway.
It’s hard I can’t explain it; just feels like it’s missing something. And then there are games on it that have been ported to Switch like Atelier or even visual novels.
I think i’ve spoilt myself by having ALL the consoles. And the Vita seems to have the fewest games to justify it’s purchase. The prices kill it though. I would happily buy a couple of the Samurai Warriors games if they weren’t like £33 still.
Sony should re-introduce sales. If I look on PSPrices I can see most of these £30-£35 games have gone down to like £6-£8 before but now they don’t have Vita sales. I missed the boat.
I bought my Vita in 2019 and so far it’s one of my biggest purchase regrets. It has so much potential but the games just aren’t there and the ones I do want are so expensive. I downloaded Persona 4 but haven’t started it yet so there is that. But i’m considering paying the full price to download Trails of Cold Steel just so I have something else substantial.
Edit: oh and I recently got Suikoden 1 & 2 when we thought the store was closing. So there is some playtime to be had there.
@Kratos-sensei pretty sure you can. Look at Bayonetta with Nintendo helping funding it (or possibly Dead Rising 3). Any deal can be made between a publisher and a manufacturer. Whether or not it’s the case here, who knows, but it’s possible.

Re: Don't Hold Your Breath for Bethesda's Starfield on PS5, PS4
@Beasley2K genuine question: does Sony have a hand in FFXVI development? I actually don’t know either way but if they don’t then all they have done is “paid money to take it away from other platforms”.
Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
@velio84 I never said Microsoft doesn’t have any and in fact I said the opposite. The Gamepass deal is separate from something like timed exclusivity I should think.
Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
Really nice users Push Square has! Lol.
Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
@Katsuhono I mean the price discrepancy is a different story. I don’t know what to say about that. Sometimes (in sales for instance) games are cheaper on Xbox and sometimes they are cheaper on Playstation. I guess at that point it’s up to the individual to decide if the value is worth it.
Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
@4kgk2 if they sell that badly on Xbox then why the need for Sony to secure exclusivity? At that point surely the goodwill is more valuable than a few lost sales.
Also yes of course if a game comes out a year later on Xbox it’s not going to sell as well.
Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
Re: Sony on Upcoming PS5 Games: Wait Until You See What's Coming from Our Third-Party Partners
Re: New PS Vita Games Will Sadly Cease This Summer
Re: New PS Vita Games Will Sadly Cease This Summer
Re: New PS Vita Games Will Sadly Cease This Summer
I bought my Vita in 2019 and so far it’s one of my biggest purchase regrets. It has so much potential but the games just aren’t there and the ones I do want are so expensive. I downloaded Persona 4 but haven’t started it yet so there is that. But i’m considering paying the full price to download Trails of Cold Steel just so I have something else substantial.
Edit: oh and I recently got Suikoden 1 & 2 when we thought the store was closing. So there is some playtime to be had there.
Re: Insomniac Games Renews Trademark for Xbox Exclusive Sunset Overdrive
@Kratos-sensei pretty sure you can. Look at Bayonetta with Nintendo helping funding it (or possibly Dead Rising 3). Any deal can be made between a publisher and a manufacturer. Whether or not it’s the case here, who knows, but it’s possible.
Re: Xuan Yuan Sword 7 Brings the Long Running Action RPG Series West on PS4 This Summer
“Anyway, for the first time ever, the series is coming West on PlayStation”
The Gate of Firmament is on Xbox since 2018 and I think might even be on PS4...
Edit: Just checked and yes the game has trophies on PS4 so it exists. I guess it’s not in the west though?
