So, Naughty Dog might not be quite ready to show off its multiplayer project, but it has brought us one or two other things for The Last of Us Day. Of course, there's all the cool new merchandise, letting you outfit yourself in clothing and accessories inspired by the post-apocalyptic world. However, there's one little thing that's crept in at the last minute: the very first look at The Last of Us' HBO series.
Shared by Naughty Dog and other parties involved is the above image, showing the TV adaptation's Joel and Ellie looking out at the ruins of a crashed plane. The HBO series, co-starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as the main duo, is now in full production, with filming happening in Canada as you read this.
It's not the most exciting first glimpse at the show, but it looks like the costumes and the environment are pretty spot on. It'll be a while before we see any proper action, with the series set to debut sometime next year, but this is a pretty encouraging snapshot.
Are you excited for The Last of Us' HBO series? What do you think of this image? Tell us in the comments section below.

Cant wait to watch this
Looking forward to the TV series. Hopefully the actors do a good job. I am pretty optimistic about this tbh.
@jrt87 Spoiling one of the best PS4 games for people there, consider an edit?
@jrt87 there's nothing cheap about it
Spoiler alert
@jrt87 Guess you're not a game of thrones fan then. Pascal is used to being a protagonist with this outcome.....
The casting is questionable but I’m looking forward to it - mainly because it’s HBO. They usually do a good job.
From behind they do look the part but the actors look nothing like the characters from the games (especially the girl playing Ellie) - we’ll have to see how that turns out.
Cautiously optimistic.
Pedro looks more like the Joel in the concept art than the final character design.
Bella looks more like a young Abby.
😝
Looking forward to this show, think it's going to be something special.
Is it bad that I think the games look better then the TV series?
I wonder how your regular non-gaming viewer will respond to TLoU.
Most of us here have played the game, and are already invested in that story on some level. But to those who has not played the games, won't it just seem like another Walking Dead spin-off with funkier looking zombies?
Joel looks okay but ellie should be played by someone smaller/younger I think.
@wiiware I think they needed someone that could pull off playing a 14 year-old but within a couple of years look old enough to play Ellie from the second game.
Only so much you can do with make-up and CGI!
I had a feeling this would be all that they would reveal. Never was a fan of this kind of reveal for something personally. What can I do with a photo of a guy and a girl looking at an open field? There isn't much to talk about really here but I'll still give the show a shot when it comes out.
I don’t give a damm about a video game tv show.
Removed - spoilers
@jrt87 ahh yes, I forgot how people that are 20 years smuggling, doing crimes, killing people don't make enemies that could kill them later lol what's your point? You might not like what happened, but Joel had it coming
Guess I shouldn’t have clicked on this article so my fault I guess. Not sure if I was going to play it anyway, but cool - nice to be spoilt!
Where are the mods at with these comments, christ...
@daveofduncan I know and they know that every single story about The Last of Us is going to attract the same old haters and spoilers. Really should employ some extra mods on occasions such as these.
Parts of me would hope they can stay true to TLOU and keep the ambiguities masking the non sensical plot. That’s how the first game was so great. They left you fill the blanks and draw your own conclusion.
@Col_McCafferty From the back she looks more like dina in tlou 2 rather than ellie in tlou 1 I think. Series like stranger things can find a good childrens actor, with the budget they have tlou tv series should be able to find them too.
@wiiware How do you know she isn't any good in the role?
They need to make their own thing, the game is a starting point but they can't be beholden to it otherwise it may feel almost like simply cosplay or worse, a parody.
In the words of Tess.
"We are ***** people Joel."
I'm afraid for this one.... should have left it alone. I have high expectation for this.
@jrt87 the events of the second game could be seasons away (depending on how it performs) or might never be touched on at all.
And of course all the twitter comments on that post are a cess pool. That place should just be wiped off the face of the internet.
@jrt87 If anything, they’ll make Joel more unlikeable and portray the fireflies as squeaky-clean saints to justify the events in the second game. The subtlety that made the first game so great will probably be dumbed down for general viewers. But we can only speculate for now.
Note to self: Dont read any more comments about TLOU 2
Where the eff are the moderators..you know moderating these comments / spoilers
Right, but does it have Chris Pratt as Mario and Seth Rogan as Donkey Kong?
I want to get hyped for this but I still can't forgive what Naughty Dog did last year to YouTube Content Creators.
Aw shucks they blew it!
@Robocrop_Duster like omg so cruel like.
@fR_eeBritney Joel is pretty unlikeable though, for most of the game anyway. Only really towards the end that he softens.
He's a killer, mate. We may empathise with him due to the prologue but that doesn't change the fact that he's not an altogether decent person.
His past was always going to catch up with him.
I'll never understand why people who hate something or "don't care" about something always find the need to post about that something.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to this. I actually like taking in shows/films based on games/books I know just so I can spot the differences. I embrace those differences because it makes zero sense to do exactly what the show/film derives from. If you're gonna do it that way then why even adapt it?
@Col_McCafferty They’re all killers though.
In that world, you have to kill to survive. You can’t really apply our real-world morality to Joel’s world. It’s kill or be killed. And it’s in our nature to survive, whatever the cost.
Just look at what’s happening in the UK at the moment with the media-created mass panic buying of petrol. People actually fighting on the forecourts. And petrol isn’t even a basic need.
Imagine if there was suddenly no food. Other people would be the cause of more deaths than starvation.
Would you just allow your family to starve because that’s the alternative option is immoral? Or would you go hunting for food (and do anything to get it)?
So yeah, where TLoU is concerned you just have to decide which killer you’d rather spend time with. I know who I’d choose. But lets have a vote lol
There’s no point in arguing about it though. It is what it is. Debating it isn’t going to change the outcome, sadly.
@Col_McCafferty I don't know about her acting, I just said about the difference between her and in-game ellie (which is still a child in the tlou 1).
Looks awful. The game is better graphics than that
Thanks for sharing the first look of the HBO series!
Why do so many people care that the actors aren't a spitting image of bloody 3d modelled game characters?
For the next videogame adaptation, could we cast some unknown with zero acting talent, but who looks exactly like the characters, please? Failing that, an actor who looks a bit like them but may well be a horrible fit for the role. That's the only sensible option, after all! 🤦🏼
Some people are so divorced from reality it's a wonder they can tie their shoelaces. Which they probably refer to as their 'foothouse roof-snakes'.
Kinda looks like CG, no?
@Toypop
If it's anything like HBO's other shows then this shows storytelling is going to have more twists and turns that a mountain road. We shall see.
