After weeks of rumours and teasing, Virtua Fighter 5: Ultimate Showdown has been officially announced. It's an enhanced remaster of Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown — a cracking 3D fighter that released on the PlayStation 3 back in 2012. That was pretty much the last time SEGA's series had any relevance, so it's great to see it return.
Ultimate Showdown is a PS4 exclusive, and will only be available through the PlayStation Store. What's more, it's heavily rumoured to be a PlayStation Plus title for June 2021. Given that Ultimate Showdown's release date has been revealed — 1st June — we'd bet on the PS Plus leak being legit, since that's also when the Plus games will be dropping.

Oh man, I haven't played a Virtua Fighter in literal decades.
Very nice. I loved playing this series on my Sega systems and in the arcades. I played Virtua Fighter 5 in the arcade, but not on PS3. I'd love to play it again.
Looks great! Wasn't expecting this to be a remake!
Awesome, nice to see this coming back
Anyone know in which way Ryu Ga Gotoku is involved? Can they add Kiryu to the roster, lol. Majima?
Heck yeah! I'm very excited for this!
@BigBoom3ai3 That would be amazing. I know this is a remaster, but maybe they have DLC plans? It's not impossible...
I have to buy it for support and I'm glad it's gotten a little update. But man do I want an official VF6 with crazy graphics, especially after playing Guilty Gear.
@ShogunRok @BigBoom3ai3 I might be mistake, but I think this is the version that’s playable in Yakuza.
@mousieone You're mostly right — it's a beefed up remaster of the Virtua Fighter you can play in the most recent Yakuza games.
For those old enough to remember, back in the mid 90s Virtua Fighter was absolutely massive. You couldn't escape coverage from magazines and TV back then (from a UK perspective) and VF2 single-handedly kept the Sega Saturn from complete irrelevance. Good times.
Sad to see how the franchise has become all but a distant memory with most gamers these days giving no reverence for its significant impact to 3D gaming.
Happy if it comes to PS+!
@ShogunRok It sure would be. I’ve gone through Like a Dragon, 0, Kiwami, Kiwami 2, and now working through Judgment and man I’m late to this game, please give me more. I just recently found out there are two samurai Edo period Yakuza spin offs, and if those come west good lord..
@BigBoom3ai3 I have no interest in this game at all - but if they added Yakuza characters I might have a change of mind!
Bummer about it being digital only, but I think I'll buy this. I don't see a price yet, so I am curious how much they'll charge...
Perfect game for PS+ for me. One I'd love to play, for a nostalgic kick (I'm one of the 3 people that bought a Sega Saturn, and it came with VF2), but probably not something I'd pay for.
I'll be getting involved with that!
Please have ROLLBACK netcode.
@phil_j agree 100%. It’ll be nice to play for like 30 minutes every once in a while
@BigBoom3ai3 @ShogunRok Thank you I thought so. That’s probably why RGG is involved then. They converted the game to Dragon.
Other stories I’ve read on this talk about the online component but hope there is a single player campaign.
Smart to make use of the porting work team RGG has done. Most htings Sega are just fantastic.
I'm really looking forward to this, Virtua Fighter is still my favourite 3D fighting series and this looks great
Yay! Looks good can’t wait to play
I’ll take it, been playing this on the Yakuza games but now it great just to have it by itself on PS4. Still need VF6 though.
Remember when SEGA had that thing of doing Virtua games? Like Virtua Fighter and Virtua Soccer and Virtua Racing? And then that football game came out called Actua Soccer... like that's virtual but this is actual... but then it also looked like this...
What a time.
@johncalmc The match being West Ham v Wimbledon somehow dates that game more than the graphics 😂
I’d be more interested if I hadn’t spent the last few years playing it in the Yakuza series.
@nessisonett This was a big game in Division 1 I'll have you know.
Never played these as Tekken was always my 3d fighting fix (and funnily enough how i met my wife) but I am down to give this a try.
Hoping this gets enough people playing it and a strong enough response that Sega decides it's worth it to attempt a VF 6. I'll be getting this day one. If it's in the June PS Plus lineup, great, but either way a definite download.
Definitely picking this up. I've missed the VF games. Could it be a refresher for a possible Virtua Fighter 6 soon? I hope so. 🤞
"Remade for a new generation"
[Releases on last-gen hardware]
I've never played VF. What's the button set up and are specials done with d-pad movements, a la Street Fighter, or button sequences, as in Tekken?
@PossibLeigh It's a 3 button game: Guard (Square), Punch (X or Triangle), Kick (Circle).
The fighting is mostly similar to Tekken but the combat is more free-flowing. The fighting styles are based on real martial arts so there's no fantastical moves like fireballs. The inputs are mostly timing based as opposed to Street Fighter's quarter motions and the fighting is centred around counterattacking unlike the juggling in Tekken.
I will be all over this with my tongue.
@truerbluer So it's like Dead or Alive then? Kidding, kidding!
Thanks for the info. It being timing based intrigues me. I might not suck at it then!
yaaaawwwnnn
@PossibLeigh Actually Dead or Alive is the closest comparison and has a shared DNA with Virtua Fighter. The original DoA was released on Sega Model 2 arcade hardware and DoA 5 even had VF fighters as guest characters so there is a bit of crossover between the franchises.
I’ll be honest - I bought Street Fighter V when it was on offer and was genuinely quite excited as I used to love Street Fighter games. But I played it for like an hour and thought um... games have massively moved on. OK being Ryu or Ken took me back a bit and some people may love these games (especially if playing against friends) but for me these games don’t need rehashing - there are just SO much better games available now.
I will definitely grab this, if the June PS Plus rumors are true.
Virtua Fighter Remix sold me on a Saturn back in the day. I played the hell out of Virtua Fighter Remix and played even more of part 2. I haven’t played a Virtua Fighter since 3 on Dreamcast which was a solid game. I’ll definitely give this a shot if it hits PS+.
One of the first games I owned on the PS3. Played it to death with my friends. Can't wait to finally play an entry again, good to see Sega finally releases one again. Hopefully a real next gen Virtua fighter game will be made in the future.
Hi there fellow gamers.
So, this was the anouncement.
A remake of VF5 on PS4.
Kept thinking it was going to be VF6.
Even so, it´s really good to see the series making a comeback somehow.
Street Fighter 2 made me love 2d fighting games, but it was Virtua Fighter 2 that made me love 3d fighting games, with a more realistic combat mechanics.
Now, can we finally have Kiryu-chan and Majima-san as playable characters in a fighting game Sega? Pretty please?
Cause it´s about time that happens. We can dream......
Cheers, stay safe and happy gaming to us all
Cool. They can bring back Virtua Striker for me as well.
I don’t know how I feel about this. I mean I will buy it day 1 so let’s get that out of the way. VF is my favorite fighting franchise.
However:
Pros: VF is back! Please let this revitalize the franchise.
Stage redesigns!
New music!
Cons: Ps4 only (this should be multiplat)
Not feeling the new character models and terrified of what they are gonna do to Vanessa.
New UI looks weird (this is minor)
Doesn’t look like any moveset or balance changes...
Seriously SEGA, I own 4 copies of this game already. Where is VF6?
