There were a number of new game releases last week, and of the ones arriving on multiple platforms, the lion's share of physical sales went to the PlayStation 5 versions.
In the UK's latest retail chart, at least. Tales of Arise debuts in second place, and PS5 copies account for 58 per cent, while the PS4 version comes out at 28 per cent. Similarly, NBA 2K22 arrives in third, and 46 per cent of sales were for the PS5 version, and the PS4 version accounts for 27 per cent. Finally, Life Is Strange: True Colors ā debuting at number six ā is selling best on PS5 with 54 per cent, and PS4 on 28 per cent.
Lots of physical purchases for Sony's platforms, then. With a batch of new titles, it does mean some are forced out of the top 10, and that includes Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales this time. It slips from seventh down to 13th. Meanwhile, F1 2021 holds out in eighth, GTA 5 is in ninth, and the remainder of the top 10 is Nintendo-flavoured.
Here's how the full top 10 looks this week.
UK Sales Charts: 11th September 2021
- WarioWare: Get It Together!
- Tales of Arise
- NBA 2K22
- Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
- Minecraft (Switch)
- Life Is Strange: True Colors
- Animal Crossing: New Horizons
- F1 2021
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury

Nice, can't wait to get tales after I finished r&c rift apart. Also man, playstation gamers really like japanese 3rd party games compared to others, 86% is kind of insane lol.
Good numbers for Tales of Arise. I also read that it had a higher concurrent players peak on Steam than all the other entries combined, which is kinda crazy.
not gonna lie, JRPG's aren't my thing but tales of arise looks realy good.
Here's hoping Tales of Arise performs well. Quality should be rewarded.
Great news for Playstation. Have to assume if the lions share of sales are going to Sony machines, third parties will contine to prioritise the platform for development
@jdv95 I didn't think they were either but played Persona 5 last year and Final Fantasy VII remake this and both completely bowled me over.
Problem is these are the very best the genre has to offer, other JRPGs can't help but feel lacking in comparison. Not sure if Tales of Arise would be worth getting at some point.
I love forward to trying Arise as it's going in a newer direction.
The last Tales game I played, which coincidentally was the last main Tales game, Berseria, was very similar to the few before it. Still really like it tho, apart from the ending
And this is why xbox doesn't get more JRPG's as there's no interest from xbox players apart from a select handful
@Col_McCafferty i'm with you 100%
i also played P5 and loved it,but it was actually the social and school stuff that i loved while the dungeon stuff was my least favourite.
i guess because i'm a western european, the western RPG's are more my thing since i "feel" them more you know?
@Col_McCafferty If Persona 5 hits an A rating for quality then tales of Arise is a definite B and worth picking up.
Switch owners really will buy any old crap, I wouldn't pay any more than $10 for that Warioware game! Have at me lol
But anyway, I bought Arise & True Colours. Hoping Deathloop turns out well too. Too many games, not enough time!
This is actually crazy - but it is only Physical right?
One weak area for Xbox is their physical releases (as we all know) so I am fully digital with Xbox and I assume lots of others are. I bought this digitally on Series X yesterday and loved the hour or so I played so far. Really wanted to support it early on but I fear I am one of very few who will. Good for Playstation; bad for Xbox unless the digital figures are much different.
I feel like this article title needs to clarify that this is physical only.
@Voltan its the first Tales Game that releases on PC Day1 so Im not suprised
@K1LLEGAL Digital figures probably make it look a lot less dire. Iām also playing Arise digitally on Series X.
This is fantastic news for Tales of Arise and JRPG fans. The numbers for this game on steam are insane as well. Will definitely be picking this up once my backlog is finished soon. Do I need to play any of the other Tales games to understand the story?
@mrtennis1990 Itās stand alone, you can jump in and not be lost at all.
Good for Tales. I tried the demo and didn't really click with it but with all the good word of mouth the full release has gotten I will likely try it again at some point in the future. Maybe Black Friday.
@K1LLEGAL Also playing Tales of Arise digitally on Series X. I wouldnāt be surprised if Xbox does better digitally overall, perhaps because GamePass gets people used to playing digital even more so than other consoles.
Yeah in terms of retail, in the UK anyway, this has been the case for a while now. PS5 physical is really strong here.
More people are buying digital now though.
@Ichiban That is a big issue to many games that buries great titles im always baffled when people say there is nothing to play.
@IonMagi That makes sense. Thanks.
The game also currently sits at 9.3 in user score on meta critic. So far players love it.
@The_New_Butler I have a issue finishing games in the normal way. The gamepass is not for me even more games some with a timer on it.
If im overwhelmed then i have a hard time finishing a game it not fun if you understand what i mean. I feel like someone clocking in at work with the amount of games available.
I dont need a gamepass or PS Plus dont even play PS Plus games not because the are bad but because i dont have the time for it.
I think i remember playing games so fondly because you didnt have so many and fun finishing them. So more and more games that are longer and longer does not make it better.
These Firstparty titles are the games that bring back these great feelings as a kid. Quality games that are finished and are done.
I think thats why i really hate GAAS its even more like having a job with no end i really like to finish my games and get on with a new yourney.
@jdv95 Tales games feel more like fighting games than what the norm is for JRPG. They're great for people who cringe at the thought of Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest but still retain much of what makes a rpg a rpg.
And so it begins and Nintendo is probably looking at sooner rather than later for their next whatever their next console is.
I have to be honest I've not brought a disc for a very long time in fact the disc drives are the first to go on my consoles from lack of use ,everything I buy is digital especially on Xbox I get them a lot cheaper from Argentina so never buy disks they just too expensive
@The_New_Butler you can get gamepass much cheaper u know ? When u run out buy 3 years of Brazil/turkey gold from cd keys/eneba then add a 7 day ultimate and u convert all teh gold to ultimate ,you end up with 3 years ultimate for approx Ā£80
@The_New_Butler With GAAS i tend to get annoyed because i just want to see something end.
With the Walking Dead the original idea was that the series would go on indefinitely so why i would i even start to waste my time and never see the outcome of the yourney.
Your Megaman 2 idea is a great showcase of finishing a game and making your own set of rules to finish it again. Not because you have to but because you want to.
Isnt PS Plus the same people complain about the value if i look at it in that way can get my money in a month for less of the price of a game. And i know i dont need more titles i use Plus purely for online.
@The_New_Butler English series versus US a small amount of good episodes versus a stretching it as long as possible at any means. The X-Files is a fantastic example the series should have ended after 6 seasons with a big movie or small series to tie it all together.
Looking forward to seeing how Deathloop fares next week. Iām know Iām getting it for sure!
@The_New_Butler I'm finding a very similar issue as well. To push that further, if there is a PS Sale on I will go through the full list looking for a bargain on a game I've been after, while when the Xbox has a sale I don't even bother looking because I just won't buy anything on the Xbox as I have game pass. Its almost like PS+ on steroids. I do sometimes question buying some games on PS in case they come to PS+ but its not even a question on the Xbox anymore.
In summary I think MS have to go completely all out on GP. It feels like it has to work or they'll be in a bit of trouble.
I do wonder though, if Xbox sales end up becoming negligible for non GP games, will the dev companies be forced to go the GP route allowing MS to pay very low sums for the privilege?
Is that a good outcome for gamers? Guess time will tell really.
Wow, Warioware is killing it. Good for Nintendo. I haven't played my copy yet, but I'm looking forward to doing so soon.
Not surprising Playstation platform sales dominated the physical charts for Tales, considering...
I feel like Iām wasting my breath but here goes. If you bought Samurai Warriors 5 digital on Xbox you got a 5 dollar gift card plus enough points for another 5 dollars that amount is doubled if you have Game Pass ultimate (for the gift card). It works out to like 15 dollar more or less. Why wouldnāt you go digital then? Thatās an extreme example but they run punch cards all the time and you get points searching with Bing. This without factoring something like GPU. Just look at NBA2k22; numbers werenāt great there either 23% for a sports game on Xbox. Hmmm?
@Ralizah Always the voice of reason
Nice to see Tales of Arise debut at number 2. I'm also happy to see WarioWare top the charts.
People are reading way too much into this. Iām sure the game is indeed selling best on PS5, it has a bigger install base, but Xbox gamers have, in my experience, a way bigger ratio of digital-only players, and that likely magnifies in the UK where digital product in general seems to have higher volume than physical.
For what itās worth as of this writing Arise is the #4 best selling Xbox new game on Amazon physically and #8 digital code. For reference: thatās better than the physical Call of Duty Vanfuard (#5) and physical FR Cry 6 (#9)
TLDR: yes, Xbox gamers DO indeed play JRPGs
Rankings might change by the time anyone clicks this.
Great for Tales. Love the game so far. And runs like a dream on PS5.
Tales, NBA and Life is Strange all best on PS5. Already the home for 3rd party games.
2% of NBA on Switch, why even make it?... They all playing a Ā£40 Mini Game collection (but people complain about PS5 prices š¤·āāļø)
They need to put NMH3 on PC/PS5
Removed - trolling/baiting; user is banned
It deserves to be up there it's a lovely game. It's disheartening however seeing GTA V here.
@Ganamede That's a lie, 3rd party games sells best on playstation, I remember resident evil 8 sells more than 75% on playstation console on it's launch day š
The only exception is cyberpunk, but that's because sony refuse to sell that game on their digital store, lol.
To give people an idea of how low the box charts really are -> https://mobile.twitter.com/Chris_Dring/status/1437340021779058688
This is what we are talking about very low sales.
I bought Tales of Arise on xbox. Really enjoying the game so far.
