Re: Insomniac Hackers Allegedly Leak Terabytes of Internal Information

nolifebr

@Porco - Well, with gaming budgets reaching unbelievable levels (Spider-Man 2 was close to 400 million), it's no surprise that we're seeing fewer and fewer new IPs as the risk of them not working out is much greater.

It will be very interesting to see how Sony will act in the next 10 years. Hulst has already said that creating new IPs is one of PS Studios' strengths, but I believe that any mistake could cost an entire studio (I believe that Bend, London and Media Molecule are on a knife's edge with their next games).

I'm also very curious to see how Sony will try to act with these crazy budgets. Maybe the alternative really is to bring the 8~15 hour games back, but that alone will bring up the discussion that: "No one should pay more than 30 bucks for a game that only lasts that long" despite these type of games probably cost more than full fledged PS3 and early PS4 games nowdays.

Re: What Was Announced at The Game Awards 2023?

nolifebr

I mean, Sony didn't had enough content for their own big showcase this year. It was kind of predictable that they wouldn't show anything major at the TGA.

Either way, it seems pretty clear that 2024 will be even weaker than 2023 in terms of first party games coming from Sony. Concord should be their big game for the end of the year, which is strange since we only got a CG trailer for that one.

At least in terms of announcements for 2025/2026, they will have enough content to generate some hype again (Bluepoint, Naughty Dog, Cory Barlog's game, Sucker Punch, Asobi, Wolverine, Death Stranding 2, London Studio, Bend and so on should have stuff ready to be shown by mid 2024).

Re: Looks Like Sony's the Latest to Be Struck by a Slew of Layoffs

Jaffe's news is that Connie Booth (legendary first party producer at SIE - has worked at Sony since Crash) is leaving Sony.

He just doesn't know if it's for her own reasons (retirement) or if there was some bad blood. Apparently Angie Smets (ex-Guerrilla) will take her position. He made an drama because he doesn't like Guerrilla nor their games (he also thinks Hermen Hulst is the one who will be appointed as SIE CEO).

Re: Reaction: PlayStation Boss Jim Ryan May Have Been Disliked, But Leaves Big Boots to Fill

nolifebr

Good luck to whoever takes over and tries to please the "hardcore community" while trying to keep the company growing (One thing goes completely against the other, by the way).

Eric Lempel (current head global marketing, sales and business operations – used to be the PS Plus guy back in the PS3 days) is probably the person they'll chose to take the role. I don't know if he will be very popular with the hardcore audience since he doesn't wear gamer shirts out there.

Sony's silence regarding its games is very clear, they are simply not ready to be revealed. Even Naughty Dog has already stated that announcing a game 3 or 4 years in advance is not a good thing for the studio developing it. The problem is that Sony doesn't have enough studios to be able to announce and "shortly" release games on a regular basis. Unless they buy a good number of studios (or publishers), we will continue to have years in which they announce and release many games, and others in which they will practically do nothing.

Re: Jim Ryan Retires as PlayStation Boss in March 2024

nolifebr

Pretty sure Sony will focus even more outside the PlayStation platform going forward as they want even more money. Expect PS games to release Day 1 on PC and PS Plus may arrive on PC in the next 3 or 4 years.

Lots of people celebrating that Jim Ryan is going to leave, but who's said someone "worse" than him won't take over?

We can only hope that Sony has no Andrew Wilson to take the role.

Re: Sony Has a State of Play Livestream for September, Rumours Suggest

nolifebr

Not fully related, but probably most of those live service games (would bet that it will start with Helldivers 2) will arrive on PS Plus and Sony will justify the price increase to them.

Most people were guessing that these games would be F2P, but it seems to be more profitable for Sony to simply raise the price of Plus, add these games there and hope everyone spends with microtransactions - While the game will paid on PC but won't require any kind of subscription.

Re: Video of New PS5 Slim Model Posted Online

nolifebr

Kinda funny that Tom Henderson, the person who first talked about this new model never mentioned that it was supposed to be the 'Slim' model, but now people are outraged because supposedly someone promised a Slim model.

Here's what he said on that fist leak, by the way:

"Sources have implied that although the new detachable disc drive is portable, it will not ruin the aesthetics of the console and will attach to it without looking external, presumably meaning the new PlayStation 5 will look similar to the existing model."

Re: June 2023 Circana: PS5 Posts Best PlayStation Results in 15 Years

Kind of funny that these numbers debunk a good part of the fan boy "discussions" this year:

  • "Dualsense Edge is too expensive and no one will buy a controller with that battery"
  • "Sony killed the PS5 with that awful showcase"
  • "Xbox 'E3' showcase just killed the PS5"
  • "Final Fantasy XVI is selling poorly and Square is lying"

Re: Sony and Microsoft Sign a 'Binding Agreement' to Keep Call of Duty on PlayStation

nolifebr

At least Sony has 10 years to build a proper FPS IP. Not saying that it will match COD, but they definitely need to have at least one.

Still to soon to know if Concord will be that IP, but the moment Druckmann said that the Half Life series were a huge inspiration within Naughty Dog, I would have give a big investiment into the studio to see them making an FPS in the near future.

Re: Microsoft Beats US Regulator FTC in Activision Blizzard Buyout Battle

nolifebr

@pharos_haven - Sony was in the fight to buy FOX with money that nobody knows where it would come from. Sony definitely has they ways to make big moves, the question is whether they really want it or not.

High possibility that Sony believes that things will not change that much, even with MS buying two of the biggest publishers of the industry.

Re: Sorry, But Games Are Probably Going to Take Longer Than Ever to Make on PS5

nolifebr

And to be honest, studios are not much to blame for this matter since if a game comes out with average graphics or if it has less than 20 hours of content nowadays it is automatically garbage.

It reminded me of an interview with the Remedy devs saying that they had to change a lot in Alan Wake II (when compared to the first one) because the public today doesn't accept linear games that don't offer much in the replay factor and only have with 5~8 hours of story.

Re: Reaction: Solid Xbox Showcase Should Give Sony Some Incentive to Stop Being So Damn Cloak and Daggers About PS5, PS4

nolifebr

Sorry but the Xbox showcase didn't show anything to suggest that Sony needs change any part of its strategy. Does anyone really believe that the Xbox will start to outsell the PS5 for several months straight because of this showcase?

I expected (and hoped) that Microsoft would be even more aggressive this year, because Sony needs to get out of its comfort zone. But it gives me the impression that the PlayStation brand has really reached that Apple/iPhone level where even if they don't do anything very relevant for a while, it's not going to change anything in the big picture.

Re: Reaction: Sony Flubs First Proper PS5 Presentation in Over 18 Months

nolifebr

Sony clearly doesn't have enough staff (studios) to do banger showcases year after year in the current state of game development (where games take 5 or 6 years to make). Just do one every three years and that's it. If you have a single first party reveal to be made, just do an exclusive State Of Play to it (or leave it to Keighley events).

It was more than clear that the vast majority of Sony's studios weren't ready to show anything, even more now that they went with the "reveal close to launch" aproach... And yet, people still kept hyping.

I don't mind waiting 2 or 3 years to see the next batch of first party games, but when it's time to show off, go nuclear.

Re: Sony Acquires Firewalk Studios, New Team Behind Innovative Multiplayer IP

nolifebr

Makes sense to buy new studios to tackle live service games while most of the OG studios continue to work on single player games. Sony definitely needs to find that gold live service mine if it wants to keep its buissness strategy going forward.

Folks need to understand that these blockbusters single player game are only going to get more expensive to make, and at some point each game is going to have to sell an insane amount of units to pay for itself. If Sony has one or two games that make some of the success of games like Genshin or Fortnite, it will already help a lot financially.

Re: Sony Must Share Details of Exclusivity Deals with Microsoft in FTC's Court Hearing

nolifebr

I do wonder how many publishers Microsoft will need to acquire to catch up with PlayStation, since it's clearly not fair how things were going in the least few years.

If Activision/Blizz doesn't turn them into the market leader, what the next excuse will be? It not fair that Sony has Santa Monica, Naughty Dog and other major studios?

Anyway, even as a daily Call Of Duty player, better Act/Blizz than Square, Capcom or any other publisher that has a longer history with PlayStation the fan base.

Re: Reaction: Sony Continues to Fumble the State of Play Format

nolifebr

Well, I think it's already clear that they will no longer be showing the same game for 3 years in a row, as happened with Ghost Of Tsushima and The Last Of Us 2 and they don't have enough studios to reveal multiple first party games per year.

SIE is still five or six studios (or a publisher) away from being able to have a annual pipeline of announcements. With the studios that Sony has now, it's going to be the way it is now. Some years will be full of announcements, others not so much.

Re: PSVR2 Isn't Backwards Compatible with PSVR Games, Sony Confirms

nolifebr

I think this was already pretty much confirmed when they showed the new controller (which has fewer buttons than the old PS Move). Requiring the Moves and the old camera just for BC wouldn't be very smart either.

But it's ridiculous how bad PR Sony is. Instead of simply making the excuse of "that technology is too old", they should have said something like: "PSVR games won't work right away but we are working with developers to release new ports or patches"
